the Christmas Game!

Instructions: Reply to the thread by copying the questions below. Replace my answers with your own.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Are you kidding me? For Christmas, it has to be wrapping paper... a huge variety of it!

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial... I miss the smell of a real tree, but not the poking, nor the needles on the floor.

3. When do you put up the tree? Weekend after Thanksgiving

4. When do you take the tree down? Weekend after New Years. Well, that's when we start...

5. Do you like eggnog? Eyep.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? I dearly loved a stuffed Garfield the cat (came with his own Pooky the teddy bear). Also, I remember some Transformers that I played with for YEARS.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? My father.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My kids.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? Eyep. More than one.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail... but I tend to be late sending them.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Worst? I don't know if that's fair. I do remember the one that made me saddest: a stuffed Odie the dog. I had asked for the Garfield mentioned above, made a big deal about it. And on Chritmas morning, I unwrapped Odie. Tried really hard not to act disappointed. Fortunately, Garfield was waiting for me at my grandmother's house.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas (different aspects... sue me).

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? August, thanks to my wife. Good that we start early.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? No. Er, I don't think so?

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Whew... another tough one. My wife always cooks a huge Chrstmas breakfast... blueberry muffins, biscuits and gravy, turkey bacon, and more. I LOVE that breakfast. I also love sampling all the different holiday foods.

16. Lights on the tree? Is this Communist America? Of course! a tree without lights... sheesh.

17. Favorite Christmas song? Again, can't pick one. O Holy Night, Angels we Have Heard on High. Edit: had to add Holly Jolly Christmas
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay home! We see one grandmother on Christmas Eve, the other on Christmas Afternoon, but both are local. One day, we'll convince them to all come to our house (yeah, right).

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? You know Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen. Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen... but do you recaaallll.... the most famous reindeer of all? Rudoplh the red-nosed reindeer...

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning. No peeking until everyone is up (and mom and dad have the camera ready!).

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Trying to get my finances in order.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Red and silver... but a Christmas tree is not complete without at least one blue light.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? I LOVE my wife's dressing (can eat it cold)... and I also love to sample lots of different holiday dishes.

25.What do you want for Christmas this year? Honestly? For my family to have a good Christmas, and for my wife and I to manage to stop worrying and just enjoy the season.

Grugg grugg

EDIT: Apparently Olan beat me to just singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Damnit.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping Paper. It's not even close.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Real. Seriously, why is that even a question?

3. When do you put up the tree? Usually my birthday, which is two weeks before Christmas, and gives me something to do before I go partying and wake up on Christmas eve not knowing where the days went.

4. When do you take the tree down? Um...First week of January?

5. Do you like eggnog? Sure.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? I once got a little box, a toolbox really, filled with action figures from a dozen different movies I liked. Spiderman and Batman teamed up to fight the aliens for Space Jam, if I recall correctly.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? I'd say my gf, but she's now my ex, so she's getting some rotten fruit or something.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My brother. Here, have...that thing you don't shut up about for 3 weeks before Christmas .

9. Do you have a nativity scene? Nope, I can remember my neighbour's when I lived at home catching on fire though. That was funny to hear the fireman inform us that they found the remains of Baby Jesus.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail. Even when it takes two and a half bloody months. Am I write people?

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Someone gave me a telescope. I suppose it's expensive...but what the heck am I going to do with a telescope?

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Does The Nightmare Before Christmas count? That was always one of my favorite movies. P.S. I liked it before it became cool, damn all these copycats.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? I am a fan of cranberry pie.

16. Lights on the tree? I know of no alternative.

17. Favorite Christmas song? Wait 'til I get drunk and sing "GOOD BLESS YE DECK THE JINGLE FROSTY OF KING WENCESLAS." Sometimes the Reading Rainbow sneaks in there too.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Uh, I got to me Gran's, that count?

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen. BUT DO YOU RECAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLL THE MOST FAMOUS REINDEER OF AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL! Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (REINDEER!) had a very shiny nose! And if you ever saw it (SAW IT!) you would even -- Alright I'm done.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Angel. Mine's holding two little candles that look like dynamite. We refer to it as the terrorist.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Morning. I'm usually home for Christmas so I get woken up when my brother does (read: 4 AM). Usually we make him wait until 6 AM. One time he was sick and I slept until 4pm, so really...Christmas Afternoon.

Jingle, jingle!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Either or… depends on the gift, really… some things are just not conducive to being wrapped so they get stuck in a bag.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial... I miss the smell of a real tree, but not the poking, nor the needles on the floor.

3. When do you put up the tree? Weekend after Thanksgiving

4. When do you take the tree down? Whenever the wife tells me to… one year that didn’t happen until April… I’m pretty sure that my wife was either Santa or Mrs Claus in a past life (or will be in one yet to come).

5. Do you like eggnog? Oh yeah… cinnamony-nutmeggy goodness with a good wallop of rum or whiskey in it… what’s not to like?

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Oh wow! I was always partial to Legos buuuuuuuut I’d have to say the one gift that really flipped me out (because I really wanted it but didn’t dare ask for it due to expense) was this programmable futuristic tank thingy called Big Trak! That thing was fan-friggin-tabulous and was perfect for transporting and/or annihilating Star Wars action figures across the house, backyard, etc.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? My Dad… the man professes to never want anything… has everything he might need... etc

8. Easiest person to buy for? My daughters.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? A few actually… ranging from the ‘traditional’ to the ‘odd’

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Since my wife is the HMFWIC of that department, I’m going to bet it’s snail mail, she’s kind of technophobic, bless her pea-pickin’ li’l heart.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Can’t say that I’ve got a category for that, really… How about everything I got during the Christmas of 1987? I had started boot camp on the 10th of November that year and, since boot for the good ol’ USMC is 13 weeks long, I didn’t get jack until after graduation. Yes, gang, in 1987 USMC stood for ‘U Suckers Missed Christmas’!

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas Story (you’ll shoot your eye out kid!)

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? A better question might be when do I stop? Finances and mental faculties being what they are I’ve gotten in the habit of buying Christmas presents whenever I might see something suitable and have the extra $$$ to do it.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Whatcha got?

16. Lights on the tree? Don’t get me started on lights! We’ve got a 7 and a half foot tree, right? Seemed like, for a lot of years, I’d put string after string after everlovin’ string of twinklies on the thing only to have my wife say; “Well, honey, it’s pretty but I think it could use some more lights.” *sigh* Sooooo, one year, I put every string of lights I could find (including the ones for outside) on the tree… worked out to be in the neighborhood of 4,700 lights… the wife was finally satisfied… and airplanes started landing on my street…

17. Favorite Christmas song? Christmas Eve Sarajevo by the Trans Siberian Orchestra… actually, the entire Christmas Eve and Other Stories album. ROCK the Yuletide!!!!! If you want traditional, I’ll go with the Little Drummer Boy and We Three Kings.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay home! Although, I’d dearly love to spend Christmas at the cabin one year… blankets of snow… a fire on the hearth… Ahhhhhh

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Didn’t Santa already name them?

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? A really loverly angel… looks a lot like my wife, actually.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas Eve at Gramma’s house. Christmas morning at ours.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Money and mall madness.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? It’s a historical hodgepodge as far as theme and color goes on our tree. We’ve had a long standing tradition of each family member buying/making an ornament before the tree goes up each year and, as you can imagine, after a few centuries, the tree is quite full of memories like “baby’s first Christmas 1987”, “Our First House”, etc, etc… Don’t try to define it, just gaze upon it in awe.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Prime Rib!!!! Yummmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

25. What do you want for Christmas this year? Serenity.

A simpler Christmas (winter holiday, Solstice, whatever ...)

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Bags, but not gift bags. I use the brown paper bags form the ssupermarkets as gift-wrap and tie with a simple string or three ...

2. Real tree or Artificial? Neither. Don't need a tree to celebrate the holidy. It's just a symbol that means many things to many people.
3. When do you put up the tree? No tree, no worries about putting up or taking down ...

4. When do you take the tree down? See #3

5. Do you like eggnog? Most definitely!.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? I got a multi-blade pocket knife with teh cub scout log on it one christmas. I had to open six boxes, all wrapped, that were inside one another to get to the box with the pocket-knife. I still have the knife ....

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? My brother. I never know where his interests lie or when or how they will change from year to year.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My father. He loves everything, even if he doesn't know what it is..

9. Do you have a nativity scene? Nope. Not my thing.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Both ... but I tend to be late sending them, either way. And I ALWAYS forget someone, even though I use a list ....

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Whoa! Ummm, I can honestly say that I have no "worst" gift. I loved 'em all.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Home Alone. The kid is me in my younger days, but in a more modern setting ...

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? March. I know what's coming and I have time to think and hunt for just the right gift while I am shopping for other things.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes. An heirloom (watch and fob) gifted to my grandfather, who gave it to my father, who gave it to me, and then I passed it on to my son..

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Pastries. Any of'em. All of 'em ...

16. Lights on the tree? I'm a commie. No tree, no lights ...

17. Favorite Christmas song? A serious choice would be O Holy Night. A light-hearted humorous two would be Dominick (the Christmas Donkey) and Grandpa Got Run Over by a Reindeer.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay at home ... distance has already made strangers of most of my extended family.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Nope. They don't visit that often.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Sheesh. No tree, no lights, and NO topper! (#3 again ...)

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Only ONE on Christmas Eve and the rest on Christmas morning.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Figuriing out what to do with all the gifted fruitcakes that usually aren't eaten, and how to minimize the number received next year ...

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Snowflakes and the ecologically damaging window flocking. I live in the southwestern desert, transplanted from snowy northern Indiana. While I miss the snow, I am glad I no longer live in it..

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? An old family recipe for a (kind-of) Holiday Cherry Cheesecake with a chocolate topping and laced with cherry liqueur ... like a cherry cordial pie/cake. The mouth waters ...

25.What do you want for Christmas this year? For my part, I would like to see the return of the "simple" celebration of Christmas, without the commercial and retail hype that says "Chriestmas is not Christmas without ouir product"

yay

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper. Christmas is as much about ripping said paper to shreds as it is about getting the wrapped gifts.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Real. There's nothing like it.

3. When do you put up the tree? Last week before Christmas.

4. When do you take the tree down? Late January

5. Do you like eggnog? Never had the pleasure of tasting it.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Can't remember, got a lot of stuff back then.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? Everyone.

8. Easiest person to buy for? No one.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? A what now?

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? I always forget about sending them, but when I remember I prefer the mail version.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I got a sweater once from my grandmother. Hated it back then. Now I hate that I hated it.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Nightmare Before Christmas, Home Alone (the first two, not that crappy 3rd or the 4th I haven't seen yet), Christmas Vacation, and there was this old film about Santa helping a little girl to get to her dad before Christmas (can't remember the name of it but loved it when I was little)

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? It depends, but now we finished our shopping last week.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Not sure what the question is, but I have returned a thing or two I disliked.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? The dinner.

16. Lights on the tree? Yes.

17. Favorite Christmas song? Many, many, many good picks, but I specially like songs like Jólahjól and Kósíheit Par Excellance. There are many more that compare but sadly I can't remember all their names.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? I go home. So technically I travel. Me and my older brother go back to our hometown to spend Christmas with our parents and younger siblings who still live there.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Rudolph. Seriously, we in Iceland have 13 santas (yulelads in Danish, jólasveinar in Icelandic) who walk to town. They're not as fat as that lazy guy you have sitting on his sleigh.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas Eve. Icelandic tradition to open the gifts after 6 o'clock.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? How early they start advertising it.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Red and green with a little white.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? The dinner. The family sitting by the table, talking and telling jokes. The food isn't so bad either.

25.What do you want for Christmas this year? I stopped asking for anything few years ago. I accept sweaters now.

Occupying myself until certain doom arrives

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? The thrill of the hunt is to be found in the carnal act of stripping the present of its outermost layer, then subsequently throwing off whatever other layers remain until satisfied with the outcome. That said, our christmas presents are usually wrapped in the comics section of the newspaper.

2. Real tree or Artificial? The first time I went to BC, I took in the rich aroma of damp christmas pine trees. Oh goodness gracious that is a beautiful scent. That said, ours doesn't threaten to die in the box between seasons. Alternative to the tree, we use christmas pine mulch in mom's splediferous garden.

3. When do you put up the tree? However soon my dad will allow it to be put up.

4. When do you take the tree down? However long we can put it off, which varies greatly.

5. Do you like eggnog? Not a whole lot, but it indeed has a flavour to be appreciated. With Cinnamon

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Oh my, hard to say. I did dearly enjoy transformers which would be frequently flown around the house, regardless of bird shape in which to fly. Lego brought great enjoyment.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? I haven't really taken up the chore of buying christmas presents. Even now that I have moneys of my own, I am saving up to pay off student loans. That said the family teams up to get something for mom. I strive to make it non-kitchen appliance related, however much she seems to enjoy those gifts as well as any. Last year was an awesome toque with matching scarf.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My dad takes two boxes of turtles (the snack kind) every year, though this year he has been found to be diabetic. I can imagine things will be somewhat different.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? A little one that sits in my room. My dad is not much of a christmassy person.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? I thank that my mom does this. That said, mail. My mother would first have to learn the operations needed to get to the e-mail part of a computer, then with her keyboard-pecking style take forever to send them.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Once I got a small lego set that contained pieces of the wrong colour and several of the studs didn't fit the holes they were supposedly designed for. I was crushed at the idea that it was a cheap imitation. Of course that was one of the few christmasses we drove down to my grandpa's farm in Saskatchewan (the provine that you can only spell properly without aid if you have been and possibly lived there) the remainder of some pretty awesome gifts were found.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Uh... I don't know. There are some that I am rather tired of, but I like a whole lot.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Don't take care of the shopping. Personally I think the sales start far too early though.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Not intentionally? I don't think?

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Christmassy food, and anything made with the spirit of the season. What else can I say?

16. Lights on the tree? Lights, of course. Was there a doubt?

17. Favorite Christmas song? I didn't know a whole lot until High School Concert Band. Good King Wenceslas (or Wence-less-las) and that one about the hearing what I hear. Pretty well all of them - except maybe those flashy ones that have been overdone. I heard the TransSiberian Orchestra or whatever you call it once and really enjoyed that.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Commonly stay home.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Not without Olan's help. I would have gotten Dasher and Dancer, then maybe Vixen. Comet was a favourite, and Cupid would follow in mind. Rudolph without question.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star, but I kind of want an angel. Maybe even a terrorist angel with her pretty candles (see several times previous post).

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Morning, with much anticipation, usually.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? People complaining about this and that and not being happy. (Of course there are many complaints that I will whole-heartedly agree with, but I don't need too much griping) also, the flashy, superficial side of christmas promoted by our lovely capitalistic system (I complain of it and I live in Canada! You poor Americans...)

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? I don't know. We have several ornaments that look like instruments. Band Geek that I am. I think our tree is too small for some of the things we throw on there. We even stick the rest of the garland over the windows and railings and still the tree is too full.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? MMMmmmmMMMmmmmmmm..... just about everything.

25.What do you want for Christmas this year? Honestly? I have never been able to say what I want without several hours and a Wishbook from Sears. Of course in those materialistic younger days, there were many things. Now I am mute on the subject. I wouldn't mind some certain D&D Supplements now that I think about it. I almost forgot- but another shipment of books to read. Everything I currently own has been read nearly thrice or more- besides that dwindling pile on my computer desk.

Well, time to Audition for Symphonic Band. Wish Luck!

It is TOO Early for this, but I'll play along.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Bags. My wrapping skills are nonexistent, so I use bags whenever possible.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial, to save real breathing trees that are doing their level best to keep us breathing (although for religious reasons, we never had one)

3. When do you put up the tree? (hypothetically) Day after Thanksgiving

4. When do you take the tree down? (again, hypothetically) After New Year's

5. Do you like eggnog? Sure if there's good rum in it.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? It must have been a stuffed animal of Big Bird (y'know, when Sesame Street was worth watching). I must have been 3 at the time, and I loved it until the feathers fell off and BB had no eyes.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? My father.

8. Easiest person to buy for? My nephew.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? no.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Had to be a pair of Radio Shack battery-operated games, when what was clearly on my list was a Nintendo 64.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? That Charlie Brown Xmas special.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Usually after Thanksgiving, which is our family deadline for wishlists.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? As in landfill recycling, you betcha.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? The gravy Mom makes from the steak drippings.

16. Lights on the tree? (once again, hypothetically) Sure why the blue blazes not?

17. Favorite Christmas song? Sting had one a while back, "Gabriel's Song."

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Travel, to home.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Lessee here, Sneezy, Dopey, Shaggy-2-Dope, The Rock, Venison McTasty. . .the rest are a blur. Jer-Bear? No?

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? I'm gonna go with Jamie Hyneman's mustache for this one.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas Eve.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? There's no lifting of the flamethrower ban in my municipality during the one time I most want to use one.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Whatever frightens the children most--aw crap, wrong holiday.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? We have the same thing each Christmas (our family has very few traditions but those few are staunchly defended.)

25.What do you want for Christmas this year? I want my Dad back.
