I got to play the part of Rick Blaine once... It was awesome. One of the highlights of my life.

Almerin and I actually got to see Citizen Kane in THEATRES! On the big screen. They played it one night in a cinema here for some reason. Never thought that we'd get to see CK in a theatre.

The highest aspiration of a great director is that the audience never notices his touch on the screen. If you notice the directing, it was done poorly. That said : Kubrick.

Directing is an art. People like artists because of their special touch. A movie where you cannot notice the directing doesn't mean it's great. It means that the director didn't have any special opinions or perhaps chose to make it as 'flat' as possible.

I understand your opinion, but I happen to disagree. Perhaps you see it as a distraction from the movie, I think it adds something. People like movies like Sin City and 300 not only because of the story or the violence, but because of the style. That style was based on Frank Miller's novels. So if you say you don't like to see a style into a movie, that's saying that every movie should be filmed in the same way. How boring would that be?

And no, I'm not confusing directing with art direction. A director's job is more than just saying 'cut' and deciding on the angle of the camera.

Style isn't what I'm talking about. Style is important. No, I mean that the director's job is to take you through the movie, but if you feel like you're being lead (unless that's what the movie's about), then it's been done poorly. It should be smooth and seamless, you should feel like you're there, not like you're looking at a screen. If you feel like you're watching a movie more than fifteen or twenty minutes in, it was done wrong. By then, you should so immersed in it that everything in the real world is one, and there is only the story being told... When it's done REALLY well, not only are you so immersed that the world disappears, you yourself are also gone for the duration. THAT'S why I love Kubrick. There is no Rystefn, there is only Alex and his goons and tormentors. There is no Will, there is only Joker, Cowboy and the Viet Kong. While the movie is playing, I'm not just transported to another place, the rest of the world just vanishes away.

What's your earliest memory?

I have a lot of early memories. I'm not sure which one is the first, so i'll give a couple that i know were before i hit school. So i suppose i was 3 or 4.

I remember visiting a house with my parents, that we were going to move into. There were a lot of toys laying in one of the closets still, and i was walking over them for some reason (i guess to play or check them out) and i fell down and something sharp stuck me in my bottom. I screamed really loud and cried and was taken away.

Another memory: In the same exact house. Our cat had just had kittens in my closet (the same closet! haha), and i was really excited, so i started jumping over a sardine can that we had let them (or the mother, rather) lick the juice out of. I jumped over it a few times, and then landed on it with my foot and cut my little toe pretty badly. I was taken to the emergency room and perhaps given stitches. When my mother was carrying me out of the ER, i pulled the fire alarm as i passed by it, and tons of nurses started running around frantically. We were right beside the door and my mother just yelled at me and then ran out of there, haha. She left them to sort it out.

For the longest time, I thought that my youngest memory was of my younger brother being born (I got in trouble for jumping on the bed that day)... It turns out, upon doing a little research, that I was wrong. I hadn't realized just how young I was until someone pointed out that the movie came out the previous summer - I'm such a nerd that my earliest memory is seeing Empire Strikes Back in the theatre.
