@ Keeper

What do you mean? Like casting a first level spell at say 5th level?

Not exactly

No, can a mage able to memorize 6th level spells cast a 7th level spell directly from a spell book. Like a scroll. One time casting and spell disappears from their book.

Spell From Your Book.....

So is that real thing?

It seems possible and it has the down side of losing the spell from your book.

It's a one time thing.

We need something out of the box and this would really help.

So cast it and works great, but cast it and fails the spell is gone.

What'cha say boss??????

Nope fraid not

Looked the magic section of all the books over and I have to say, no.

In 5th edition you can cast a 1st lvl spell say at 5th level and get more power out of it, but nothing like that is possibly in 2nd Edition. Sorry.

And the tine for action is upon us

Tann - will we get any answer from Allanan based on the one post that is up at this point?

To everyone else.  We need a plan and it needs to get posted within the next 24 hours.

The first question is about range - Tann said the beast doesn't see us right now because we are at the edge of its range.  If we move up, he will probably notice us, although the distraction of the beholders might hold his focus for a bit.  But not for long.  Do we need to move up in order to attack?  The range is long for spells and arrows.  Certainly we can't do basilisk blood or vorpal blade type moves if we don't move up.  So do we charge?  Do we scatter as we charge?  Staying together to stay under the veil spell seems to not be worth much anymore.

Ody - any good ideas on facebook?  I don' have much beyond turnbing to stone or some such thing.  Lothor would likely charge while shooting arrows - trying to get within range to throw some of the basilisks blood.  Or he can hand some off.

I'd go with split up and charge.  Lothor should try to get in whip range and let others use the basilisk's blood.  Any boosts to speed would be good.  Flight allows attacks from alternate directions.  Probably get one chance before we all start dying.

Making a statue of it

Tann -  Based on discussion the blood might be able to turn it to stone because of how the basilisks blood works.  Would the whip be likely to work on something this big?  Yeah, I know he gets a saving throw which is probably pretty good, but would the whip be capable of turning something this big to stone or would it only affect a small area of it?

Question Answers

Tann - will we get any answer from Allanan based on the one post that is up at this point? Allanan will answer Cor’s question in my post

Honestly with a creature this size if the flesh to stone portion of the whip gets through her magic resistance, I’d have to go with a portion of her body based upon the overall dragon size.

Ok just want to get this out to everyone, you guys DON"T have to fight her. You can turn and move away as fast as you can and by the time she is finished with the Beholders you'll be safely away from her. Yes you need her heart to get back to the future, but whats to say her heart is the only magic item strong enough to help Allanan cast the spell.

You still have time to make the call.

Also as Keeper is the only one that has posted and I'm running a good fever I'll give you all another week to post. Consider me generous.

Can you at least post Allanon's poertion answering us.  Our actions kind of depend on his answers.

Hmmmmmm......

Well a DM hint is not something to ignor.  Another magic item just as powerful is something to think about.

I'd think about us to move away back to the tower, kill those three beholders and then regain our full power.

We know killing the dragon is an option and it still might be the only way but doing it with full strength and better planned set of spells would give us a better chance to win.

Also if there is an OUTSIDE chance to get the dragon to "give" us the better magic item by telling her we were the ones to destroy the beholders that allowed her to get free.  I know talking to her ain't the best...but who knows she might be greatful.

Not a lot of new ideas from Facebook. Turn her to stone seems our best bet so far kill her...but getting close enough to do it and being successful is still our issue as we have already figured out.

The FB did keep saying how dragons are vain and love to be praised so maybe flattery and begging might work.

You know part of our quest is to free the draogn queen who could be a desendent of this great dragon so there is a talking point on why we should be given the magic item so we can return, save her and free the dragon realm.

Valene might remember something said to her by the queen that would ring true to this dragon.   Could make for good storey too.

Know of any way to send our thoughts or speech so we don't have to get too close?

We could try to talk to it.  We did set it free.  If everyone agrees on that course of action Cor will take it upon himself to try as the group leader.

Fight, Flight or Freeze

If we fight we might be best off doing it right now.  True, we could regain spells and such, but those beholders are fairly tough.  With a dozen of them blasting away at her she has to be taking some damage.  We have a little time to prepare/move and there are a bunch of real threats on the other side.  This is the opportunity.  There is likely no way to set a trap for her.

Is there a way to collapse the cavern roof on her?  And, of course, not on us.  And, of course, let us be able to dig out the heart afterwards?  And, of course, not give her a chance to move?  Probably not, but thought I'd ask.

I like the idea of not fighting.  I've been wondering for a while if it was possible.

Is there any chance this IS the Dragon Queeen?  Just before we met her and in a different form?  I suspect not, but since I wasn't in the game when she was, I don't know.  They can change shape, so size seems doable for something this powerful.

As for talking to her, I think we want to let her finish the beholders first.  And we might want to let her have a moment of freedom before we approach.  Perhaps standing atop a hill a ways a way where we are obvious, but not right near would allow us to be spotted, present no threat, and talk a bit before her immediate response of "kill" wipes us out.  As for the best way of communicating, a skywriting spell would certainly be nice.  Anyone got such a thing?  But I think just yelling from a safe distance would likely work.  As Tann said, her senses are good.  And she will be smart.  Getting her attention and not attacking might make her curious.

The fact that she was imprisoned by these beholders is still a curious thing.  Giant (red?) dragons don't have a habit of being good in my esperience, but the enemy-of-my-enemy sort of thing offers a bit of hope.

I looked at collapsing the roof and we do not have the spells to bring down enough material.

Talking is a very good idea

Nomad, I agree, fighting the dragon is not in our best interest. I'm suspicious that it's the wrong line of action, she was imprisoned and is fighting her captors. Just trying to kill her to take her heart seems like a pretty evil action to me, not something anyone in our party should be okay with (even Siréne with emotionless action should have a problem with it). Besides, this does not look like a fight we can win, even if we have a head start. What do you all think?

Sorry for delay in weighing in over here. Have been traveling all week and just got back. Need to prep for the work week, so probably not able to post today. Apologies all.
