Ah yes... BUT...

...You can't assume that the molotov exploded at all, my good man, let alone where or when... That's up to the GM... This here's rules-based, not freeform...

We get to say what we want our characters to do and the GM tells us whether or not those actions are successful or end in miserable, life ending failure...

For example: My post basically indicates that Murph's expecting that the molotov's going to explode and is anticipating having to still shoot the charging zombie all while trying to back himself out of what he figures the blast radius will be if the molotov explodes... then, in my little OOC comment, I added a bit of detail as to what Murph's actions would be thereafter... (cuz I'm not sure how many rounds t_catt might cover before he wants our next actions).

Like the man said earlier... never assume anything...

Edit: Just cuz I won't be able to sleep without knowing I at least brought it up... I've played in a game or two of Olan's before and, based on the posted actions I can almost assume what's liable to happen, next... If the molotov explodes, Murph's liable to get singed a little (he's trying to get out of the way and keep himself between the zombie and the rest of you)... If Alaster keeps going with his charge there's the possibility that a) he'll get singed (or roasted), too, b) he'll run into the line of fire of Murph's shotgun and possibly get shot if he runs past at the wrong time, c) he'll get to the zombie at the same time as the molotov and *sizzle sizzle*, or d) any combo of these.

So, worst case scenario, Murph can't fall back far enough because Alaster's charging the zombie... the zombie gets too close for Murph to delay pulling the trigger any longer for the sake of the others, Alaster steps in front of the blast hoping to mash the zombie's brains in, the molotov hit's and does explode. Murph and Alaster are flame broiled zombie snacks, the party's down one shot gun and about 25 rounds of ammo that would've come in handy, not to mention, two people down in overall numbers.

Honestly, I'd really recommend editing a bit (leaving the assumptions out) but I'm not gonna say "Do it!" If that's what you think Alaster would do in the situation, leave it as is... but don't say I didn't waaaaaaarn ya...

Again, not trying to be bossy... just helpful...

See my edit above... *grins*

okay

Hold on to your horses before anyone else posts. I need to assess the situation, and make a major retcon.

okay

Now hear this!

Here's the deal. This is a rules-based game, not a freeform game. I thought that I made that exceedingly clear in my very first recruitment post, but I will admit, I did not go into the full details of exactly what that means. We've discussed it a bit here in the Q&A, but there still may be some room for misunderstanding, so let me clarify now.

You, as a player, control the actions of your character, and your character only. You may not create items or NPCs, you may not narrate where something is located, what a given situation is, or determine the outcome of ANY action whatsoever.

I am the GM. I narrate the setting, place NPCs (whether human, zombie, or anything else) within it. I use rules, stats, and dice to determine the outcome of every action.

When combat situations arise, I use modified D20 Modern rules to resolve it. You, as the player, post what your character is intending on doing. I, as the GM, use the dice to determine initiative (which is the order in which every combat participant gets to act). I then determine the success or failure of combat actions or other skill checks. For instance, had Murph rolled to go first, and scored a critical hit with his shotgun, the zombie's head would have exploded, and there would have been no need for the molotov to have been lit. Had the zombie gone first, it might have attacked Jake before he got the chance to fling the moltov.

In noncombat situations, post what your character is trying to do, and I'll let you now if it works or not. Want to hotwire a car? I'll determine if it works. Hack a computer? Same thing. Heal an injured teammate? I'll let you know.

In short, you cannot assume ANYTHING. Post your character's thoughts and intentions. Do not post the results of any action, as it limits the choices for other characters.

I am retconning (i.e. changing reality) back to the beginning of this fight. The molotov has not been thrown, much less exploded. I will then resolve combat from there.

This will be the only warning.

Normally, I would deal with these sort of offenses very harshly, indeed. However, we do have players who may be new to rules-based gaming, so I will make a one-time exception. In the future, if you have a question, ask myself, Merideth, or Eol Fefalas.

I love the enthusiasm, but quit trying to post three times before I have gotten a chance to respond. Slow down, figure out the full details of what your character is going to do, and why they are doing it. Post your characters thoughts, let us know their motivations, and let us know what they are trying to do. BUT LET ME HANDLE THE RESULTION OF THOSE INTENTIONS.

If anyone else steps on my GM toes and tries to affect reality of the game, post results of actions, etc, that character will be unceremoniously killed in a humiliating manner, and the player will be permenantly removed from the game (no backup character allowed).

Are we all perfectly clear?

Thanks. As long as it does not hapen again, no harm, no foul, life goes on.

okay

Feel free to post - combat post is up.

Note that for most fights, you may want o lay out a strategy for what you'll try to accomplish over a couple of combat rounds. Otherwise, I might assume for you.

As it all turns out, Jake won initiative and made a great throw (attack roll amost perfect), so a lot of the earlier posts would have been fine.

That being said, STILL DON'T ASSUME.

Okay, folks, feel free to post where you go from here.

Whew!

That was scary, huh?

I think I peed a little!

Post from Murph is in the works (got to get some work out of the way first) but, for the record, once he gets over what he's looking at and what he's just done (it was a monster a second ago... now it's just... a girl), our greasemonkey's going to want to see if there's anything of use in that cop car and keep moving towards Save Rite...

okay

Thanks for the heads up. I'll NPC your guy as need be.

Sorry, not trying to come across as a jerk, but in a rules-based game, I have to keep a tight hand on things.
