A Grumpy Old Bear

The door to the Inn opens and a Grumpy Old Bear wanders in. He makes his way to the Bar and rears up on his two hind legs instead of trying to sit down on one of the tiny stools. The bartender comes over and asks, "So what will you have there big fella?"

The bear says, "Give me a ,........... whiskey."

The bartender looks at him questioningly, "Why the big pause?"

Hello everyone. My name is Jon. I am an old time D&D player, from way back with the 1st edition, though the 2nd edition was my favorite and still is. I never liked the 3rd or even tried any of the later additions. I have RPed online in the past, though it has been a few years since I've done any of that and am a bit rusty I'm sure.

I've been lurking about and reading some of the posting games going on and liked what I've seen, so I decided to register and give it a try once more. So I'm here to say hello, and see if anyone has any D&D stories going on, preferably 2nd edition or close to it, that I might join?

So if anyone has anything, you can post it here or email me. My email is in my profile. I'll check back and see what's going on. I hope to find something, but I have been enjoying the reading of some of the games as they are quite interesting. Thank you!

A Picture

I figured out how to add those little profiles pictures everyone has next to their names. I couldn't find a bear, too bad, but I found an old bald guy, which is close to my actual appearance.

From One Old Bear To Another...

Hello......... Time to add the Ody welcome.
A really good place to start here is "Pit F(r)iend's epic guide to getting started for newbies." That will help you figure out how to navigate the halls of the Inn.
To meet folks in real time pop into the DragonChat where I act as the current resident bar tender. We offer our very own "Good Old Froth-n-Slosh", the stale pale ale that is so light it has the foam on the bottom.
Just grab a mug off the shelf and draw a cold frosty one.

My assistant Igor is usually lurking around if I'm not there.

He never says anything, must have something to with having his tongue cut out by his last boss, that nasty bar tender over at the Angery Orc Bar & Grill.
I'll have him put out a plate of "Lady Fingers" in your honor.

Reminds me we need to have another "Ladies Night" and restock.

Anyway the "Posting Games" are great place to get to know folks and of course the DragonChat is our favorite lounge.

And here a soft fluffy towel.

So lurk or play, welcome to the Inn

Welcome good Sir

I'm TannTalas a fixture pretty much here at the Inn. I see your a fan of 2nd Edition as am I. Currently I'm running a high lvl 2nd Edition AD&D game, called the Trilogy War. Though I closed recruitment for replacement players a week or so ago, I do have an open character still available. Below is a link to the recruitment thread and a second link to the first page of the game thread and the history of my world. The open character is named Roan Fenstrider, a human Ranger/Cleric. I have run this game for almost 14 years here and is so far the longest running one at the Inn. If interested please let me know here or in the Trilogy Q&A or by PM if you would like a more pvt conversation.

Thank you

Well, it sounds like a game right up my alley. I will check out the game and the character you mentioned. Give me some time and I will let you know if I am interested in taking over the character. Thank you for the invite.

Welcome to the Inn!

Welcome Mr. Big Pause!

Like you, I go back to early basic D&D and really grew up with AD&D, second edition style. Tann's Trilogy game is a great one if you like sadistic DMs that try to kill you at every turn and freeze out your lungs. He runs a good game also, but don't tell him I said that. Roan is a good character and we would love to have you onboard.

Speaking as someone who also came here knowing only second edition, I would encourage you to try others as well. The new systems aren't "better" in my mind, but they also aren't worse. In fact, they are really pretty similar. In all of them the sadistic GM tells you what is trying to kill you and you write up your desperate plans to avoid a bloody demise. The exact nature of the rules don't matter as much as imagination, an enjoyment of the genre, and the ability to come up with ways to avoid getting suffocated under the ashen remains of whatever horde just tried to kill you. All of the systems really do play pretty close to the same. Give them a shot. (And you don't need to be an expert in the rules - that is for the GM.)

I would like to specifically invite you to the Lost Mine game. It is fifth edition, but is fun. And we could use another character.

And finally, take that towel Ody offered you. You'll know why . . .

We would gladly welcome you to the game Bear, I think you'll like it. After all to be around for almost 14 years I must be doing something right

Trilogy....

Tann's game is a HIGH level game that takes a lot of thought and cooperation of the characters. The player do review stuff in Q&A and often find good ideas to try. Tann throws some tough stuff out so this isn't second level hack and slash, it's high level problem solving to live. We meet some non Monstrous Manual creatures of Tann's design and it takes creative thought to defeat them. The game may seem to move slowly at time but that is because it does need thought. We have some really good folks in the game and when we get rolling we have done some cool stuff. So come and think outside of the box and see if we can keep this game going

Yes

I like the character, though usually I prefer my own, but if you are ok with me playing him like I wish rather than like he was played previously, then I can play him.

I have been reading a few pages back. How far should I read? Obviously I'm not going to read all 200+ pages. As for being a high level cooperative game; I don't have any problem with that as I have played and DMed many such games.

So Tann, I would like to give the character a shot if you are ok with that? When are post due and at what frequency? I assume all the strategizing happens in the Q&A thread it seems.

Welcome to the game!

Most of the strategizing happens in the Q&A. However, sometimes we will also do that in messages. Just incase as we strategize the sorts of nightmares that might be in front of us we don't give Tann any ideas. Like feet freezing to the floor or something like that.

You picked a good game. It is good to have the ranger/cleric back in business.

Yes

It is best to keep your plans from the DM sometimes, it keeps him guessing and less time to plan your eminent demise.

I'm going to sent a PM to Tann so he knows I am interested in playing. He might miss my posts here.

Yes

I got your PMs, thanks. Give me a couple days to read them over and I should be ready for a post. If I have any questions, I will ask here or more likely PM you.

What is the frequency of posting, once/wk? When do you do your DM update?

Grumpy will do, if you please. That's me, at least as far as my kids are concerned.

Looking forward to RPing with all of you!
