End of meeting; Start of whirlwind!

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 4 – Shuttlebay 1; Flight Operations Office – 1130

“Welcome aboard, Bradley,” Vaela said softly, following Tochi’s introduction, “I’m sure you and I will come to know each other fairly well. I understand we are to be sharing quarters.”

“Good to meet you…roomie…” Ens Garner replied self-consciously…

On the screen, Ens P’Tammah’s antennae twitched, a silvery brow lifted, and the faintest hint of a grin tugged at the corners of her mouth. “And you,” she nodded in the space of her pause, “roomie…”

…The new FCO turned, his eyes skittering from face to face as if he weren’t quite sure exactly where he should be looking. "Good to meet everyone really, I'm looking forward to working with all of you," he grinned into the air,  "Don't know if Commader Zai said anything about me before today, but I'm fresh out of the academy.  I'm talkin' fresh. So I'm here to learn, can't wait for y'all to show me the ropes.  Each ship has her own culture, and I'm looking forward to learnin' th' Peregrine's.  From what I can see the flight deck looks tip top, and all the shuttles are in good repair.  Love a tour a little later when Commander Zai here's done with us."

Megan, who had flopped back down into her seat after her own frenetic introduction to Garner, looked up at him, now, an impish smile dancing all over her freckled face. Awww, she cooed, managing to keep her words if not her expression contained, th’ lad’s a wee bit nervous, inn’ee? Might ’s well be twistin’ ‘is knickers… Tha’s bloomin’ adoreable!

“We’re looking forward to working with you, too, Ensign,” Tochi said, drawing Megan’s gaze away, “and we’re just about finished. Our primary reason for calling this meeting was to see to it that you were properly introduced to these fine people and welcome you to the team.”

The XO took the PADD from where it had been tucked under his arm, then; glanced at the screen, gave it a tap or two, and then handed the device off to V’Lur. The Vulcan looked at the screen, then, at Tochi and nodded shortly as the XO continued on; “The next matter we’ve asked you here for is to thank you all for your efforts where the repair and refit procedures are concerned. Given the circumstances and situations of the past week, you’ve all shown commendable professionalism and, in some cases, extraordinary restraint. Expect notations of those facts to appear in your service records. That said, we are less than half an hour away from disengaging EMS and leaving this starbase in our warp-trail, once again. If you are on duty, please carry on with our apologies for the interruption and my thanks for your time. If you are, by chance off duty, today, and wish to assist with the final shakedown and launch-prep, we encourage you to do so.

Mr Garner,” LCDR Zai said, his hands clasping behind his back as he strode for the door, calling the meeting to an end, “you are currently not scheduled for any duty shifts on today’s roster…”

“Brills an’ marvy!” Megan squeaked, bouncing out of her seat, her pale-blue eyes flashing with near unbridled excitement.

“…Master Chief V’Lur will coordinate with OPS in order to get you cycled in and will provide you with an updated duty roster later in the day. In the meantime, feel free to familiarize yourself with the ship as you see fit. We’re at T-minus twenty five minutes and counting, people,” the Trill reminded them as the door opened and he stepped out onto the catwalk overlooking the shuttlebay, “let’s make them count.”

Almost in concert with the door closing behind the XO, the viewscreen on which Vaela had appeared went dark, V’Lur turned and disappeared through a hatchway that connected this room with the adjoining Flight Control Center, and Kook and Yas extracted themselves from their seats and made to leave, themselves – each of the men sparing another second or two to briefly welcome Garner, again, before exiting the office. The two men had scarcely made it through the door before Megan, in all her unfettered exuberance, had found her way to Garner’s side and taken him by the elbow…

“Well then, Ens Garner,” the pixie-faced woman beamed up at him as she veritably hauled him toward the door, “It looks‘s ef you an’ I both’re off fer th’ day. How ‘bout tha’ tour, then, eh?” It didn’t seem like Megan had even had time to draw a breath to refill her lungs before she was guiding him along the overlook catwalk and down the gangway toward the flight deck, yet, somehow, she managed to keep speaking. “YergonnalovethePeregrine,I’dwager.She’sasmallshipbut,y’knowwha’theysay;’goodthingscomeinsmallpackages,’an’allthat!Whaddyawannasee,first?What’veyeseena’ready?Anyoneshowedyeth’AuroraAngel,asyet?Helluvathing,that!Th’Commanders’vebeenworkin’onitfermonths,now.Mean’CrewmanAdler’vehadahandinit,too;jus’elped’iminstallth’ODNrelaysb’twixtallth’sub-nodeson’er,no’aweekago!An’how’boutTh’Aerie?Beenthere,yet?Doyelikeicecream???”

((OOC: We’ll wrap this bit, right there, and let Bradley try to process all of that. Suffice it to say, Mr Garner, that you have effectively been Owened and are presently being hauled down the steps to the flight deck of shuttlebay 1.

I’m gonna grab some lunch, now… Then, I’ll be back to address Throson’s return and/or anything else that may come up, in another post.))

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine – Deck 4; Shuttlebay 1, Turbolift – 1143

That went well, Tochi smiled to himself, boarding the turbolift and leaving the flight deck behind him, Garner seemed to be quite taken with Megan, if we’re not mistaken, and she with him

The door hissed shut and he called out; “Bridge.” A chirp of acknowledgement issued from the computer and lift started into motion.

…Of course, Megan is taken with everyone, Tochi chuckled, That girl has entirely too much enthusiasm to not spread it around, we suppose. Best of luck on your tour, Mr Garner.

Before he let himself get too far into imagining the green ensign being dragged willy-nilly across the ship by the impish Owen, Tochi glanced at the time where it was displayed on the lift’s console… =/\=1143.01.05.0029=/\=…  Then, with a nod, tapped his comm-badge; “Zai to OPS.”

=/\=OPS,=/\= came the almost instantaneous reply, =/\=Petty Officer Warren, here; what can I do for you, sir?=/\=

“How are we looking on our off-cycle, Mr Warren,” the XO queried.

=/\=Maintaining per standard protocol, Commander,=/\= Warren replied after a brief pause, =/\=ESM at 16.75% and falling. Umbilical interlocks nearing pre-disconnect; securing of airlocks and gantry separation prepped to follow. Navigation and Reaction Control Systems, online. We’re right on schedule, sir.=/\=

“Thank you, Petty Officer,” Tochi said, ready to tap his badge and end the communication, “We appreciate the update. Zai, ou…”

=/\=Uh… Commander?=/\=

The Trill’s fingers stopped and hovered just over the commbadge; “Mister Warren?”

=/\=This doesn’t really have anything to do with launch prep,=/\= the OPS NCO said, =/\=but I’m looking at a transporter request, here, that you just might be interested in…=/\=

Transporter request? Who or what would we be transporting aboard, now? Tochi arched a brow, a contemplative expression painting his features as he scoured his mind for the answer to that question... Am I forgetting something? …As far as he was aware, all stocks and stores had been replenished, and all crew transfers should have been accomplished by now. He might not have personally greeted all of the new arrivals, as yet, but certainly they were all aboard… Well except for… Oh... OH!.. The puzzled look morphed into a knowing smile. “Is that right?” he asked.

=/\=Yes, sir=/\= Warren answered, his own grin obvious in his tone, =/\=Commander Thorson’s scheduled to beam over in just about four minutes. Transporter Room One. Thought you’d wanna know, sir.=/\=

“I appreciate that, Travis,” Zai said, “Thank you.”

=/\=You got it, sir. OPS out.=/\=

“Stop,” Tochi commanded, noticing that the lift had already taken him as far as Deck 2. “Deck Three,” he said, re-directing the lift. He couldn’t let Eric come back aboard the Peregrine with nobody but the transporter tech waiting to greet him… There’d be no fun in that, at all.

USS Peregrine – Deck 3; Transporter Room 1 – 11:51

Standing beside the transporter console, Tochi watched as PO Bardan’s webbed fingers cycled the patter-buffer, adjusted narrow-beam harmonics in the overflow coils, and then cued up the next list of in-coming requests. “One Lt Commander Thorson,” the Zaldan transporter tech read dutifully from the queue, “requesting permission to come aboard from Starbase 118.”

“Permission granted,” Tochi said, stepping away from the console, now, and into the space between it and the transporter, “Energize.”

As Bardan’s hand dragged lightly over the controls, the air thrummed and the transporter pad lit up with a stream of ethereal particles. When those particles coalesced into Eric and the big engineer blinked in reaction his eyes suddenly registering new surroundings, Tochi did his best to paint a look of disappointment on his face. “For frill’s sake,” Zai groused, throwing his hands in the air in mock-irritation, “They’ll let anybody aboard a Federation ship, these days! I’m expecting Starfleet to send me a Chief Engineer and I get this! What’s next? Tribbles?!?!”

((OOC: Run with that as you will, Dunklezahn! Tochi's in a bit of a hurry, of course, so there's no real time for a game of let's catch up, but he wasn't about to wait until after the ship had set sail to welcome his friend back.))

Thorson's Arrival

Stardate 2365.02.19

USS Peregrine – Deck 3; Transporter Room 1 – 1152 hours

As Eric dutifully stood upon the transporter pad, he watched the operator comm the Peregrine for his permission to board. As soon as he heard the voice of the Peregrine’s operator give said permission, Eric immediately perceived the Starbase’s transporter room dissolving around him, instantly replaced by the fading in of the Peregrine’s transporter room – and a familiar, welcome face. And then, that irascible voice that Eric had wondered if he would ever hear again. “For frill’s sake, they’ll let anybody aboard a Federation ship, these days! I’m expecting Starfleet to send me a Chief Engineer and I get this! What’s next? Tribbles?!?!”

Eric tried and failed to keep the huge grin from his face as he saw Tochi approach the pad. “Well, they had to send someone to make you look smart,” he joked. “It’s a big task, but if we can keep Fleet from finding out you’re an Andorian ice monkey masquerading as an officer, we should be fine. You’re going to have to cut down on the poo flinging, though.” Both men laughed as Eric stepped off the transporter pad and enfolded his friend in a bear hug. “It’s good to see you again, my friend,” Eric said, wiping a genuine tear from his eye. “I’ve been keeping up with things as best I can from the news. You and Silas have to be the luckiest bastards I know.” He grinned as he said this and then added seriously, “And all of you pulled off something monumentally great. Well done, Tochi, to everyone. I couldn’t be prouder of you, or prouder to serve with you.”

((OOC: Tochi’s responses))

Eric gave Tochi a warm, friendly clap on the back as they headed for the transporter room door. “Yeah, I am headed straight to Engineering after I report in with the Captain, going to try to get back up to speed in record time. So good of them to tell me to report just when we have to get back on the road. I need to meet this McTavish, make sure he hasn’t broken my engines, find out just what you fiends did to my ship and what new quirks I have to find. Heh.”

Eric gave Tochi a final handshake as they entered the corridor and parted ways. “We still need a proper reunion, you realize. See if we can get the Captain to join us, have a medicinal sip or three. See you tonight!”

((OOC: Tochi’s parting remarks))

With a fresh spring in his step, Eric readjusted his duffel on his shoulder and headed for the bridge, and Commander Drake’s ready room.

Stardate 2365.02.19

USS Peregrine, Deck 1 – Captain’s Ready Room – 1205 hours

Eric paused at the Captain’s ready room door and touched the chime panel.

((OOC: assuming a “Come in”, “enter”, etc.))

He hefted his duffel and stepped into Drake’s ready room. “Lieutenant Commander Eric Thorson reporting to resume duties as Chief Engineer, sir!” he bellowed with exaggerated precision, and a grin he couldn’t quite keep off his face.

((OOC: Drake’s response))

Eric relaxed and set down his duffel, reaching out to give Silas a warm and heartfelt handshake. “It’s good to be back, Sir. I’m truly glad everything worked out for the ship, and especially for you. You were in the right, one hundred percent. They would have been fools to convict you. I’m glad they had sense enough to see that, too.”

((OOC: Assuming Drake asks Eric how he’s doing))

“So far, so good, Sir. I haven’t had any further…episodes…since that last one in Engineering, and all the doctors tell me that there should be no further issues. They were unable to find any traces of anything lingering inside me, and they seem pretty confident that everything should work like it’s supposed to from here on out. As for me, I am ready and able to go back to work. As soon as we’re done here I am headed to stow my gear and then to Engineering.”

((OOC: Any final remarks from Drake))

Eric grinned. “Thanks, Sir. It’s great to be back. I told Tochi that we need to have a more proper reunion later tonight; you’re most welcome to join us.”

((OOC: Drake’s yay or nay))

“Understood, Sir. Permission to get to work?”

((OOC: Assuming Drake’s agreement))

Eric grabbed his duffel and headed for the door. “I’ll contact you as soon as I see what’s what in Engineering and make sure we’re ready to get underway down there.”

Stardate 2365.02.19
Starbase 118; LT Nyle's Bunkroom - 0855

Today is the day, Nyle thought, peering at himself in the mirror. He had checked out of his previous command here on Starbase 118 yesterday, and he had spent his morning packing up the last of his belongings. It was humbling to realize that all you truly owned would fit in 2 large bags. Altogether, he was ready to go.

Nyle smiled to himself in the mirror. Or, at least, he tried to. It looked strange. Maybe my eyes are too wide?  he thought to himself, squinting a bit. No, that doesn't seem to help much, now does it...

Softly, Nyle reached up and touched his pale greenish gray face, leaning closer to the mirror. Eyebrows down? No, now I look angry. Up? Now startled! Maybe if I opened my mouth more? Showed more teeth? Hmpf, that will have to do, I guess.

Nyle just did not get it. Humans showed emotion on their face so much more openly then he was used to, even now with over ten years in Starfleet. He had found out very early in his career that his general stone faced appearance quickly put people off, but try as he might he could not bring himself to emote like other races. It wasn't like Nyle was some sort of Vulcan, supressing emotion for the sake of logic, but all the superficial smiling or frowning was beyond him. Nyle would smile when he found something funny, and laugh as well, but what was funny about greeting a friend at the start of a day? Wiping his horrific, forced smile from his face, Nyle turned away from the mirror.

It is odd for such a small room to feel so empty, Nyle pondered as he grabbed his bags, but almost as soon as he entered the passageway outside the thought was gone from his mind. Next stop, USS Peregrine.

Stardate 2365.02.19
Starbase 118; USS Peregrine Spacedock - 0934

With an immensely satisfying hiss of hydraulics, the airlock door slid open giving Nyle the first look into the ship he would be serving on for the foreseeable future. The passageway in view was clean, and relatively uncrowded, so Nyle was noticed before he had a chance to step aboard.

"Good morning, sir," a yellow suited human woman called, smiling as she strode forward to meet him with a salute. "Is there anything I can help you with?"

"Yes, in fact, Chief," Nyle replied after returning her salute and giving her collar a quick glance. "I'm Lieutenant Nyle, I have orders to report aboard today."

"Ah, Lieutenant." the Chief responded, shifting her PADD to her left hand and offering her right in a handshake. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you. I'm Chief Petty Officer Tara Palmer. I'm your Personnel Management Specialist. Can I point you towards Captain Zai?"

Nyle took the outstretch hand, giving it a firm shake. All most too late he remembered to smile, and quickly put the practiced expression on his face. Ignoring the startled look on that bloomed on Chief Palmers face, Nyle shook his head slightly and said, "All in good time, Chief. I will see him before we go underweigh, rest assured. First I would like to quickly get aquainted with any current operations and systems that the department is handling. Can you direct me towards the Operations Office?"

"I can, sir!" With her free hand she gestured down the hall. "Go that direction until you reach a turbolift and take that to the fourth deck. Your office will be close to the other Department Heads offices; and, of course, if you ever get lost you can always ask the computer."

Nodding his thanks to the Chief, Nyle turned down the passageway and made his way towards the Ops Office, giving each person he passed a nod and smile. Somehow he managed to miss the strange looks that were returned.

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Ops Office - 1103

Rubbing his chin, Nyle sighed softly and set down the PADD. It seemed that overall all the work on Operations Systems was either finished or being closed out as he read. There certainly wasn't time for an in depth review, as he was want to do with any files that were routed through him, but he had had enough time to do a cursory overlook, as well as take a brief look at the system specs.

The computer systems he didn't even bother looking at. They were the same as the cores used in New Orleans class frigates and a New Orleans class frigate was the first Starship he ever served on. Granted, that was a long time ago, and he was a Tactical Officer then...

I shall have to give computer technical manuals a brief look. A quick refresher. Nyle thought, leaning back to stretch his arms out behind his head. That would have to come later, however, as it was getting later in the morning and Nyle still hadn't spoken with, well, Commander Zai now. Nyle could remember the announcement made, informing the ship and crew that Captain Drake was taking command again. Apparently the Coart Martial went well, then.

Nyle had heard vaguely about the Court Martial held on Starbase 118, but he hadn't cared to really delve into the specifics. He was sure that any information that mattered to him specifically would make itself known.

"Computer, where is the location of Commander Zai?" Nyle asked, standing from his chair and rising to his full 6' 2" height.

=/\= Commander Zai is currently on the bridge. =/\=

Excellent, Nyle mused as left the office to head towards the bridge. I can officially check in and formally relieve... What was his name, LT  Lasam? Lasat? Lasad? Las-something!

Onward Nyle marched towards the bridge, so absorbed in his thoughts that he forgot to smile to the crew members as he passed by.

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Bridge - 1118

The turbolift doors slide open and Nyle stepped out onto the bridge. The first place his eyes were drawn were the Ops Station. He would undoubtedly be spending a fair amount of time stationed there. Currently, however it was manned by a Risian male. Nyle needed to remedy that, and as such, he walked across the bridge to stand next the panel.

"Lieutenant Lasad," -- After an unfortunate amount of thought, that was what Nyle believed the Lieutenants name was -- "You stand relieved."

Lasad smiled and stood. "She's all yours."

After Lasad and Nyle exchanged a brief handshake and smile -- why did the Risian look confused? -- Nyle turned his eyes to the Captains Chair. It was empty, as was the First Officer's chair.

"Do you know where Commander Zai is?" Nyle asked, turning around to speak to the departing Risian's back. "The computer told me he was on the bridge."

"You just missed him," came the reply. Not from the Risian, but from forward on the bridge. An Andorian was looking over her shoulder at him from the CONN station. "He left the bridge probably about five minutes ago."

"Ah, thank you." Nyle said, and offered her a smile. She was being helpful, after all.

Looking back at the OPS Station, Nyle thought for a moment. It didn't take him long to make his decision, however, and with a slight, decisive nod he spoke.

"Computer, who in the Ops Department is bridge qualified?"

=/\= Bridge qualified Ops personnel consist of Lieutenant Candar Moriden, Petty Officer 1st Class Miahaya Amai, Petty Officer 1st Class Darasterlee Brok, and Petty Officer 2nd Class Travis Warren. =/\=

"Which of those personnel are currently available to stand watch?"

=/\= Petty Officer 1st Class Miahaya Amai has completed her assigned duties for the morning and is available to stand watch. =/\=

Sitting down at the OPS Station, Nyle tapped the comm-badge on his chest.

"Lieutenant Nyle to Petty Officer Amai."

The response came after a brief pause, =/\= Petty Officer Amai here? =/\=

Nyle could understand the confusion in her voice, he had not had time to meet all the Ops personnel. In fact, other then Chief Palmer and Crewman Natasha Pierce -- who had breifly come into the Ops Office to grab some paperwork while Nyle was doing his department review -- Nyle had not met any other people from his department.

"Petty Officer Amai; report to the bridge for temporary watch relief."

=/\= Aye aye, sir. =/\=

With that taken care of, Nyle set to taking a much more thorough look at the OPS Panel. As he tapped through the panels different displays he felt a trickle of memory come back to him. He remembered the long hours he had spent in front of this panel. Well, not this panel, specifically, but panels very similar, if not identical.

It is going to be good to sit this station again. It is going to be good to serve on a ship again, Nyle thought. He did love his job. The technical side of it was interesting, but not the real reason he woke up each morning to start the day. That reason, the thing that he knew would keep him in Starfleet until the day he died, was the people. Good, solid, dependable people. There were some bad ones, of course, but the environment that Starfleet cultivated eventually weeded them out and left only the best remaining. And a large part of his job was keeping those people supplied and happy. Making sure that they had what they needed to make their miracles happen, and even doing his best to make sure that they recieved things that the didn't necessarily need, but wanted. Like softer pillows, -- I've never seen Crewman Daniels look happier -- or even a shipment of fresh produce and meats. Oh yes, its going to be very good to serve on a ship again.

The tell-tale sound of hydraulics brought Nyles attentions away from the panel and his thoughts and turned them towards the door. A black haired female human -- no, not human, a Betazoid judging by the iris -- of average height was walking towards him, her head tilted sleightly to the left. Upon reaching Nyle, the woman snapped stiffly to attention and gave a prescise salute.

"Petty Officer Amai reporting to relieve you, sir." she stated, still stiffly standing at attention.

"At ease, Petty Officer." Nyle replied, standing from the OPS chair and returning her salute. "We have not had the oppurtunity to formally meet yet. I am Lieutenant Nyle, I will be assuming the role of Chief Operations Officer. I will be holding a muster with all off watch department personnel later today to make formal greetings and my expections known. As for now, I need you to temporarily station yourself at OPS so that I may find and speak to Commander Zai. I have yet to formally check in. Do you have any questions, Petty Officer?"

"No, sir. You are relieved."

Relaxing, Amai exchanged places with Nyle. She quickly went rigid again as they passed, however, which was strange, because Nyle had given her his best smile.

"Computer," Nyle said as he entered the turbolift. "Where is Commander Zai?"

=/\= Commander Zai is in Transporter Room 1. =/\=

"Computer, what deck is Transporter Room 1 on?"

=/\= Transporter Room 1 is on Deck Three. =/\=

"Take me to Deck Three then."

It would probably be easier to have the computer just show me the way, Nyle mused. But that was no way to learn the layout of a ship. To learn the layout, one had to get lost every now and then.

As the turbolift moved towards him towards his destination, Nyle thoughts breifly wandered to what he was going to say to the First Officer. Probably just a formal greeting then Nyle would return to the OPS Station. He wanted to be there when the ship left Spacedock.

With an ever so slight jolt, the turbolift came to a halt and the doors slid open. Nyle stepped out, catching a quick look at the time as he exited: 1155. Nyle was cutting it close, his orders had instructed him to report no later then 1200 today. He supposed he might be cut some slack, as he was on board after all. All the same, however, that was not a first impression he wanted to make.

Striding down the hallway, the thought crossed Nyle's mind that Commander Zai might very well have left the Transporter Room. Trying to avoid missing the Commander again, Nyle decided to repeat his previous question and asked, "Computer, where is Commander Zai?"

(OOC: So, if I've got my timing correct then I figure Commander Zai and Nyle would run into each other as Commander Zai headed for the bridge and Nyle for the transporter room. That being said, I'm going to assume that Commander Zai is near enough to hear and makes himself known to Nyle.)

"Ah, Commander, sir!" Crisply, Nyle offered a salute. "Lieutenant Nyle, reporting for duty as the Chief Operations Officer."

(OOC: Assuming a formal reply and returned salute.)

"I just missed you on the bridge, sir. I have already relieved LT Lasad and reviewed all ongoing operations. As I'm sure you know, sir, all maintenance and repairs are finished pertaining to the systems that Operations Department controls." The report came in a crisp, flat voice. Probably too late, Nyle realized that he hadn't smiled. His deadpan face was not going to give the first impression he wanted; he was excited to be here, after all. As quick as that realization had dawned on him, Nyle forced his face into the postion that he had been practicing all day. "It's a pleasure to be aboard, sir."

(OOC: Assuming some sort of affirmative response to Nyles report.)

"Respectfully, sir," Nyle replied, letting his smile drop off his face. "I came to find you to report in. If I may, I would like to return to the Bridge. I would like to be at the OPS panel for our departure."

Lieutenant Kara Tal leans back her chair and smoothly taps the air with her left hand, directing an email to Captain Drake

=/\=
Captain Drake, Sir,

There are some thoughts that I didn't address in our meeting. With your permission, I would like to run a drill to gauge the crew's preparedness and ability to work together in ga combat situation. Following that, I would like to begin training those whose performance was the least satisfactory during the drill. Then I would like to conduct another drill sometime later, depending on how prepared I think those I've training are.

On a more personal note, I would like to establish and run two activities for the maintenence of morale and crew cohesion. Personal because these activities are of personal interest to me. The first is a microgravity ballet exhibition. I believe that art is important for morale. And while the maintenence of morale is not strictly one of my duties, microgravity ballet is a hobby of mine. Secondly, I'd like to lead a meditation group using the techniques I learned on Vulcan. I believe this would beneft both my mental health, that of the crew, but also efficiency and emotional stability in stressful situations such as during combat.

I look forward to your thoughts on this matter, Sir.

Thank you,
Lieutenant Kara Tal

Well, hopefully that meets with his approval. I'm not quite sure how to gauge him yet. He seems competent and fair from what I head of the trail. And thankfully, he seems to accept me so far. I all I have to do is not mess up and I should be fine. She lets out a long breath and begins tapping at the terminal in her desk. Lots of new people aboard, though that's normal. They approved my requests for the Caitian and the Earther, excellent. Weird to see Forb's little brother aboard, especially since it seems like he worships me. Inconvenient and surprising considering how his sister and I got along. I guess saving her life won her over. I wonder what kind of ridiculous stories she told him. It's an understatement to say she likes to embellish things.

Wrapping up the welcome back with Eric

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 3 – Transporter Room 1 – 1152

“It’s good to see you, too, Eric” Tochi smiled as the engineer caught him up in that powerful embrace, “It’s felt more like years as opposed to weeks since we last saw you! Now, put us down before PO Bardan gets the wrong idea!” As his feet met the desk, again, Tochi stepped back and then reached out and clapped a hand on the larger man’s shoulder, and inclined his head faintly to indicate the cybernetic arm attached below it. “Since I’m still able to feel my legs,” he grinned, “We’re guessing they managed to clear up whatever was wrong, there?”

Eric offered a simple nod in reply and deftly turned the subject.

“I don’t know how great it was,” Tochi shrugged, grinning in reply, “but, yeah, we managed okay despite the proverbial cards being stacked against us from the start.” His expression soured a bit as memories of Jacob’s political maneuverings and subterfuge, and more recent ones of Silas being arrested on the gangway, whispered through his mind. “You missed one s#!t-show of a ride, my friend. You are going to stick with us this time, we hope?”

Heh.”

“Good,” Tochi grinned, “If we have to review and approve one more damned transfer order from this Starbase, my spots are liable to catch fire.” He chuckled at Eric’s remarks about McTavish having taken care of the engines in his absence but waved a hand to dismiss any of the engineer’s concerns. “McTavish is probably the only good thing we got from our romp with the Coronado,” he admitted, “He’s not you, of course, but the man has had no problem keeping the Peregrine in good order; stepped right up where running the department was concerned, and has made a good addition to our little crew.”

Eric gave Tochi a final handshake as they entered the corridor and parted ways. “We still need a proper reunion, you realize. See if we can get the Captain to join us, have a medicinal sip or three. See you tonight!”

“We wouldn’t miss it if the entire Romulan Empire came across the Neutral Zone, my friend,” he said, clasping Eric’s hand firmly, “and, who knows; if things work out right, we may have someone to introduce you to.

Go ahead and go check in with, Silas,” the Trill smiled, genuinely happy that his friend had returned and appeared to be no worse the wear for whatever had befallen him, “I’m on my way to the Bridge, myself. Just have a quick stop to make on the way. If we don’t see you there, we’ll certainly catch up once we’re under weigh.”

With a fresh spring in his step, Eric readjusted his duffel on his shoulder and headed for the bridge, and Commander Drake’s ready room.

((Just a short one to tie up those particualr loose ends. I'll have Tochi hit the Bridge in my next round.  )

Cook's back baby! :)

Stardate 2365.02.17
USS Peregrine; Deck 4 - Sickbay – 0618

Chief Petty Officer Dana Cook stepped into the Sickbay aboard the USS Peregrine and glared around; anyone seeing her would know she was not in a good mood. They were getting a new Chief Medical Officer today and Dana was not happy about it. She had just started to get used to Doctor Moore, and they had gotten along well enough; more so than some of her other CMO's. Now suddenly there were all these changes, the Captain returning after being hauled off on charges that had him facing a court marshal. Cook was glad the Captain was coming back, she liked the man, even admired him for being willing to stand up for what he believed was right; you couldn't fault any man who did that, not in her book.

ALL RIGHT YOU LAZY LOTS,” Dana barked out at the entire medical staff she had assembled, “we have the new CMO reporting today and I want this place tip-top when she gets here.” With her emphasize on the word 'New' it was obvious she hated yet another change in the medical department, but her job wasn't to question these types of assignments, at least not openly.

Chief Cook began to dole out assignments, checking the status of equipment, medbays, scanners, supply closet, etc. As the others bent to their jobs, Cook stood for a few moments and watched, then sighed as she watched them efficiently and effectively turn to tasks. They were some of the best staff she had worked with, but she wouldn't tell them that. She couldn't show that she was soft on them, she had to keep them sharp if they were to be an efficient team. They had been rather sloppy bunch when she had taken over the sickbay aboard this vessel, but she had whipped them into shape, figuratively rather than actually. While she might verbally berate them at times, she would never take it too far, and never physically. Not that she was against violence, but unnecessary violence was to be avoided. Never strike a subordinate, or a superior for that matter; she had learned her lesson when she was younger, never again was she going to risk her career for which she had fought hard.

Dana stood watching them for another moment, before nodding slightly and then went to her desk and sat down at her terminal. She began to call up the Medical staff records and went over them to assure everything was in order. Toriak was very efficient with his files and reports, but she gave them a once-over to ensure they were up to snuff for the new CMO. Thinking of a new officer in medical made her shake her head slightly; she hoped this Lt. Reine was a competent Doctor. Not that Dr. Moore hadn't been one, but Cook had dealt with all kinds in her past, some excellent, others made her wonder what they did at Starfleet Medical sometimes.

Cook pulled up the file on this Lt. Reine; she seemed good on paper, but time would tell how she handled her first crisis. She knew that small ships such as the Peregrine got lower ranking officers, and low rank usually meant low field experience. Well, hopefully their would be ample time to find out what kind of Doctor she was before anything 'hit the fan', but knowing this ship, it usually didn't stay quiet for long. Now that the Captain was back in the driver's seat, it probably wouldn't be long before they found some trouble.

Chief Cook sat back in her chair for a moment and watched her staff working hard to make sure everything was how it was supposed to be; she nodded her approval. Maybe some of them would see it and realize that she was pleased with their efforts; it was about all they had come to expect from her, and it was often good enough.

((Just a little something to get Cook started and hopefully on track.  Now awaiting the arrival of the new Doctor.   I dont know about the other new additions made to the Medical department, will let breebles or Olan determine that.  Once the final Medical Roster is set, Cook can work on making adjustments to the duty roster, if necessary. ))

Grand Tour

((OOC: Colab post between Eol and myself.))

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 4 – Shuttlebay 1; Flight Operations Office – 1127

The two gun kid had lassoed Stormrider and was dragging him after her horse, where she was taking him, no one knew.

Out the door of the office and down the stairs and into Shuttle Bay 1 Owen dragged Garner by the elbow. It seemed to Garner that the exuberant little petty officer had already asked him fourteen questions but, as yet, she hadn’t paused her verbal barrage long enough for him to have answered a single one. He might have wondered, too, if the woman had yet to even have taken a breath but there hadn’t been space for him to ask that, either. Megan did let go of Garner’s elbow when they reached the bottom of the gangway, though,  and, as she skittered out onto the flight deck, gesturing at the expanse of the place, her speech did seem to slow if only a bit. “Ye’ve seen this a’ready, I reckon,” she grinned, “Our at th’ ready aux-craft’re typical staged here…” She motioned to where the Peregrine’s two Workbees sat… “Work Bee One,” she said, pointing at the first, “but I call ‘er Honey…” she waved a tiny hand at the second… “an’ Work Bee Two. I call tha’ one Bumble…” Grinning at Garner, she hooked a thumb in the direction of the pair of Type-18’s parked across the deck from the Bees; “Those’re our short-rangers. Master Chief calls ‘em Pod 1 an’ Pod 2,” she shrugs her little shoulders, “I haven’ come up wi’ better names for ‘em, yet. No’ tha’ he’d use ‘em, anyway.” The broad smile still lighting up her features, Megan scampered back to Garner’s side, her fingers taking hold of his elbow, again, as she started hauling him toward the lift. “We’ve go’ a coupla Eights an’ a Ten, ‘s well,” she chirruped, guiding him on to the turbolift, “but they’re doonstairs en Bay 2. Had tae run ‘em hard an’ heavy out a’ Gamera, so we got ‘em parked en Maintenance. Th’ Angel’s doon there, too. I’ll show ye, here, in jus’ a sec…”

The little firecracker was excited to show off the horses, she knew them all.

Deck 5; Shuttle Bay 2 - 1128

Petty Officer Owen was in motion even before the turbolift opened to admit them onto deck five, it seemed; her mass of copper curls bouncing behind her as she veritably skipped out onto the deck. “There’s Sierra One and Sierra Two,” she squeaked, gesturing in the direction of the Type-8 shuttles (one of which was currently being inspected by a nonplused Chief Kukkonen); then, with a nod that set her curls bouncing even more, she indicated the Type-10 just as Yas disappeared through its boarding hatch, “an’ tha’s Heavy. Master Chief Stiff Britches calls ‘er Hotel 01, but I figger Heavy suits ‘er better.” Realizing that the new ensign was a few steps behind her, the bouncy little shuttle pilot actually paused, then, and Garner was almost certain he finally heard her suck in a breath. She spun around on her heel and, if it was possible, it seemed her smile had widened and grown even brighter as she skipped back to his side.

Two of the chiefs were taking care of the horses, they knew what they were doing and the horses trusted them.  This would bode well.

“O’ course, ye’ve prob’ly seen all th’ shootles ye’d e’er care ta see,” she beamed, hooking his elbow, once more and hauling him, now, toward the racks where ordnance and reserve fuel pods were stored, “I dinnae really bring ye doon here ta see them, anyway. No, no, no, m’baby-faced Ensign, wha’ I’m aboot tae show ye’s somethin’ ye’ve ne’er seen b’fore, I’d wager…” Skirting the racks and stack of spare parts and supplies, Megan led Garner to a rather secluded section of the maintenance bay where a vaguely manta-shaped craft loomed over everything else. When it came into view, Mega actually stopped dead in her tracks, drew in a deep breath, and let it out in the form of a spellbound sigh as her eyes sparkled and danced over the silver-hulled ship.

“Thar she is,” Megan breathed almost reverently, “Th’ Aurora Angel. Commander Zai’s baby…”

"Wow." Garner said under his breath.  While it wasn't finished yet, he could see the potential.

In the next pen stood a magnificent creature, the silver horse with the white mane and tail pawed a the earth and exhaled loudly through her nose.  She dared any to ride her.  Stormrider knew it was his destiny, but she was't ready yet.  It would be dangerous to approach.

The next moment she spent gawking at the partially plated vessel was, perhaps, the longest period of stillness and silence Garner had experienced with Megan, thus far. Still, though, it was only a moment and, when it was over, the vivacious little woman started in again. “Tochi an’ Commander Thor started designin’ ‘er whilst they was still in th’ Academy, I’m told,” she informed him as she found her feet, again, and started toward the Angel, “an’ jus’ started buildin’ ‘er las’ year. ‘Er hulls based sommat on Trill designs but she’s mos’ definitely go’ th’ oomph an’ uhhh o’ Fleet tech unnerneath."

"That's amazing." Garner said, not taking his eyes off the angel, the metallic one.

"Duranium-Tritanium composite hull,” she cooed, recalling specifications from memory, now, as she lead Garner closer, “integrated Impulse an’ Warp reactors. En-wing imbedded warp nacelles an’ wing-tip lift engines. There’s hard-points en place fer a pair o’ micro-torpedo an’ probe launchers on th’ forw’rd dorsal an’, I reckon, she’s gonna mount somethin’ en th’ neighb’rhood o’ six Type-V phaser arrays.” Once she got close enough to do so, Megan lifted a dainty hand to run her fingers over a part of the hull that already had its silvery plating mounted and glanced back over her shoulder at Garner; “Once she’s ready, she’s s’posed tae top oot a’ Warp 4…”

Garner was trying to do the math in his head, when...

“She’ll cruise at Warp 4,” a male voice corrected from somewhere on the other side of the Angel’s hull, “if Zai and Thorson’s designs pan out, though, she’ll make warp 5.5 at the top end and be able to maintain for an easy twelve hours.”

“…Linc?” The voice had obviously caught Megan off guard. Her hand came away from the runabout’s hull plating and, blinking, she crouched a bit to peer under the hull in the direction from which the voice had come.

“Yup,” came the reply as a young, dark-haired crewman with a smile almost as bright as Owen’s, ducked under the ship and approached, “How’s it going, Meg?”

“Brilliant ‘s usual,” Megan smiled back, “What’re ye doin’ doon here? I figgered ye tae be runnin’ off checklists up en Engineerin’, close’s we are tae launch.”

“Nah,” Lincoln returned with a dismissive wave after wiping his hands off on a rag, “Got those lists squared away a while ago. Peregrine’s ready to fly whenever the Captain says so. I figured that, since Commander Thorson’s coming back and I had some extra time, I’d come down and get some nit-noys done on the Angel while we were still in dock…”

“The plating?’

…Lincoln nodded. “Yeah, some. I figured Throson’d like to see at least some skin on her when he got around to coming down here.”

The crewman’s gaze ticked from Megan to Ens Garner, then. He was going to ask Megan for an introduction but, upon spying the rank on Bradley’s collar, he took it upon himself. “Hello, sir,” he said respectfully, extending a hand, “Crewman Lincoln Adler; Engineer’s Mate…”

The black top hat of the silver mare's trainer came into view first, it matched the black great coat and the thin black mustache which the hunched man curled with one hand as he shuffled towards the paddock's gate.  Wild look in his eyes and his uneven grin had the look of a madman as he slowly extended his hand over the enclosure to shake Stormrider's hand.

"Hello, I'm Garner," He was never really comfortable with crewmen calling him sir.  Especially when they were older than him, and taller.. and prettier? Garner took Adler's hand and shook it firmly while grinning up at the engineer, shook it for perhaps longer than necessary.  There was no room for jealousy on a starship this small, he decided he'd have to like Lincoln. His face relaxed into an easy grin.

“Pleased to meet you, Ens Garner,” Lincoln replied, “Welcome aboard, sir.”

Megan grinned in the wake of the men introducing themselves. “Th’ Ensign’s oor new FCO, Linc,” she offered, “Tiny’s shipped oot; likely tae a larger ship.”

Garner looked from one crewman to the other, not understanding their joke.

“Probably for the best,” Linc chuckled, “Poor guy couldn’t walk two meters without clonking his dome into something.” He gestured to the Angel’s aft loading ramp; “You two want a tour of the inside? I mean, it doesn’t look much different that when you last saw it, Meg, but if Ens Garner’d care to have a look…”

"I, uh," Garner looked at Megan, but she looked anxious to show him the rest of the ship. "Another time."

“…Thanks, Linc-luv,” Megan sang, having taken Garner by the elbow, again, and, now, dragging him toward the exit of the shuttlebay, “We’ll see ye later, I’m sure. Ta!”

“I told ye, th’ Angel was something; else, din’t I,” Owen beamed as she and Garner emerged from the shuttlebay and into Deck 5’s interior corridors, “I dearly ‘ope Commander Zai’ll lemme fly ‘er a’least once when she’s done!..”

"She is a beauty."

She whisked him along the hallway, then, pointing out the armory and the phaser range… “Tha’s where ye’ll do yer quarterly quals,” she noted of the latter, “Command’s pretty tight on tha’, given we’re a patrol ship an’ all.” … Further along, she gave him a quick run-by of the gymnasium and holosuites before they reached a set of doors emblazoned with a stylized falcon’s head overlaying an image of the Peregrine, itself. The plaque mounted beside the doors read simply “The Aerie.” The doors slid away ahead of them to reveal the Peregrine’s observation lounge and, grinning, Megan hauled Bradley across the threshold. There were only a handful of other crewmembers in the place but every one of them grinned or waved or called out to Megan by name when she and Garner stepped through the doors.

Through town the two of them rode, and stopped outside the Aerie.  Tying up their horses, the two of them entered the building.  No good would come from anything inside this gamblin' hall.

“This place used tae jus’ be called th’ Observation Lounge,” Megan explained as she guided him further into the largish space, “but, betwixt Lee-Lee an’ Tash, it go’ renamed tae Th’ Aerie a week er so back.” Leading him toward the semi-circular counter that dominated one side of the room, she named off the people scattered about the place.

“Tha’s Clint,” she offered, nodding in the direction of a tall, blonde haired security crewman who was throwing darts and sipping at what appeared to be a pint of ale, “Clint Myers. Ef ye get yerself tossed inna brig, Clint’s likely ta be th’ one standin’ on th’ other side o’ yer cell’s force-field.” Her usually sparkling eyes dimmed just a bit when they skimmed passed Clint and settled on the black-haired petty officer clad in MED blues who sat, scowling and seemingly disinterested in one far corner of the place. “Ryan Bachmann,” she said, a faint wrinkling of her nose accompanying the identification, “A bit o’ a knob, tha’ one. Thinks ‘e’s smarter’n ever’one else. Claims a console in th’ sickbay bit ‘im once, though, so there’s tha’…” Moving on from Bachmann, Megan pointed out the others enjoying their downtime (a voluptuous Ardanan female, also in MED blues, called Miraan, and a human woman clad in OPS gold, who she said was named Rachel Wu).

Eye patches, hooked hands, looks like folk were loosing more than their shirts in this here establishment.

By the time she had identified all of them, another human woman dressed in the gold uniform of the OPS department appeared on the opposite side of the counter; her long dark hair pulled up into a loose bun, and her brown eyes sparkling mirthfully as she leaded on the counter and regarded Megan and the new Ensign with a bright smile. “Hullo, pipsqueak,” Leah tittered, grinning at Megan, “Here for yer first banana split o’ the day are ya?”

With her sleeves rolled up and her visor pulled down the "proprietor" of the Aerie eyed the two new comers up and down.  Depending on what they ordered could make or break their reputation.

The flash and sparkle came fully back to Megan’s eyes and her smile went back to the face-splitting version that she was known for as she turned to face The Aerie’s unofficial proprietor. “Aye,” she giggled, “an’ ye dinnae need tae make it sound like tha’s all I eat, ye friggin leprechaun! ‘Specially when I’ve go’ a fine, young ensign en tow!”

Garner blushed slightly.

“Suuuure an’ where’s me manners,” Leah replied playfully, swatting at Megan as her eyes turned to Garner. “Petty Officer Leah Finnley, sir,” she smiled at Garner, offering a hand, “You must be Bradley Garner. Welcome aboard.”

"Nice to know you Leah," Garner shook the catering specialist's hand over the counter.

"She treatin' you right?" Leah asked with a nod to the wee one.

"Yeah, I'm getting the grand tour here.  Ship looks great so far."

"She's a good on' at that."

“Lee-lee, here, can take any o’ the tasteless shyte on th’ replicator menus an’ make it taste like yer mum cooked it,” Megan cheeped, grinning as Garner and Finnley finished their greetings, “but her banana splits are absolutely brilliant!”

“They really are,” Leah smiled back, gesturing pointedly at the tiny red-head as she pushed away from the counter, “this one eats about eight o’ th’ things a day! How she does it and stays so little is the topic o’ neverendin’ speculation ‘round here.”

“I do not,” Megan giggled.

“Two, then?” Leah asked, already fishing a pair of dishes for the confections out from beneath the counter.

“Aye,” Megan nodded, rubbing her hands together in anticipation…

Leah’s mischevious gaze turned to Garner, again; “And fer you, luv?”

…Owen stood up in her seat and reached across the counter to swat at Leah, then. “You jus’ shaddap,” she snickered, “Ye bloody well know I’m no’ gonna eat two of ‘em by m’self!”

Deck 4; Tubolift - 1143

She's eaten two bites of the banana split, handed the dish to the Ensign and whisked him off to the turbolift.  As they flew through the coridors, she pointed out sickbay; the counselors office, but not really the counselors office because they were going to use it for OPS since the Peregrine didn't have a counselor; the hydroponics bay, which was apparently nice to walk through, but there were no plants in it now due to them being removed recently and haven't been replaced as of yet; and finally shuttlebay 1.

Deck 3; Hallway - 1147

Garner had finished half the banana split while Megan talked up a storm.  Her force march made the ice cream met quickly, and he did feel a little sheepish as he passed other crew members in the passageway, nodding greetings as he shoveled more and more ice cream into his mouth.

She showed him the transporter rooms, and at the mess hall he was able to put the dish back in a replicator to be recycled.

Deck 2; Outside Engineering - 1152

She'd shown him where the VIP's had stayed on their last mission, and what a mess that way, and now poked their heads into engineering.  She commented on how strange it was that the warp core was jammed in there sideways, and asked Garner if he had been on many other ships, and if any of them were like that. He could hardly say no before they were off on their tour again.  Past the Captain's mees, and Tochi's *other* office, they flew, until they found yet another turbolift.

Deck 1; Nearing the bridge - 1154

Stellar cartography flew by, as did the conference room where she told him in no uncertain terms that he'd be having all his big ol' important meetings in there, past the Captain's ready room.  At the bridge she modestly told Garner about how she got to fly the Peregrine sometimes, he assured her she'd flown it more than he had.

=/\=((OOC: Assuming some kind of preflight message from the Captain.))=/\=

Startled that the time was so close to take off, she ushered him back into the turbolift, saying she didn't want to miss it.

Deck 4; Shuttlebay 1 - 1159

The two pilots ran back to the force field keeping the atmosphere in the Peregrine as the ship was begining to move.  For once the little red head was quiet.  Turning the ship, Starbase 118 came into view, it's towers and antennae shrinking as the Peregrine gained momentum.  Finally with a flash from the nacelles the Starbase dissapeared entirely.  Bradley looked down to discover Megan had been holding his hand the whole time.

Stormrider sat on the fence, the little red head nustled up against him.  The two of them were quiet as they watched the sun set over this little town.  This was not the day he expected, but he was genuinely glad for it.

((OOC: Feel free to describe the pair as they run through the halls of the ship leading up to take off.))

Tochi meets Nyle

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 3 – Corridor – 1155

Leaving the transporter room and the brief but happy reunion with Eric behind, Tochi hurried along the corridor to the turbolift. He had intended to stop by his office en route to the bridge but, given the time and the Peregrine’s scheduled departure from SB-118, he decided better of it… So much to do; so little time in which to get it all done, he sighed inwardly, I’ll be glad to see this place in our wake… He was mentally ticking off the things he had wanted to accomplish before the ship set sail but had yet to actually accomplish when a nearby voice caught his attention.

"Computer, where is Commander Zai?"

Arching a brow, Tochi snapped out of his musing and turned in the direction from which the question had come to find yet another unfamiliar face to be the source; a large, rather wolfish looking man, sporting a gold uniform. Whatever species this one belonged to wasn’t at all common to the Federation and it took him a moment of searching his memories to place it… Ahhhh; a Daa’Vit. That’s right, Odia had some dealings in the Daa’Vit Confederacy, didn’t we?.. Interesting that one of them is serving in Starfleet… “Commander Zai is right here,” he said, addressing the man and forestalling the computer’s response, “What can we do for you?”

"Ah, Commander, sir!" Crisply, Nyle offered a salute. "Lieutenant Nyle, reporting for duty as the Chief Operations Officer."

I frillin’ knew we missed someone!

Snapping a salute in return, Tochi acknowledged Lt Nyle. “At ease, Lieutenant,” he said, letting his hand fall from salute to proffered handshake as he stepped toward the Daa’Vit, “and welcome aboard. We apologize for not having introduced myself sooner. It’s been a hectic day.”

As quick as that realization had dawned on him, Nyle forced his face into the position that he had been practicing all day. "It's a pleasure to be aboard, sir."

Tochi wasn’t entirely sure that he hadn’t involuntarily blinked in the face of the Daa’Vit’s ‘smile.’ It wasn’t exactly what one might call horrifying but there was definitely something predatory about it despite Nyle’s intention… a bit like being smiled at by a K’zintiWell, maybe not quite that badIt just wasn’t an expression for which the Daa’Vit face was made. Nevertheless, Tochi returned the grin and nodded at Nyle’s report. “Thank you for the update, Lieutenant,” he said, “Your initiative is appreciated. It’s nice to have you with us.”

"Respectfully, sir," Nyle replied, letting his smile drop off his face. "I came to find you to report in. If I may, I would like to return to the Bridge. I would like to be at the OPS panel for our departure."

“Absolutely, Lieutenant,” the Trill nodded gesturing toward the turbolift, “the Captain wouldn’t have it any other way, we’re sure. I’m on our way back to the bridge, myself.” With that, the XO resumes his path back to the lift with the new Ops Chief at his side…

((OOC: Up to you if you want to continue from there or not, Giddy. There’s probably room for a bit more conversation aboard the lift… and I know Tochi has questions… but, time being what it is, I don’t imagine either of them is ready for anything too in depth. Both are likely focused on getting to their posts. ))

The Doctor Will See You Now

((Collab with Eol))

Stardate 2365.02.17
Starbase 118 - 0600

Dr. Melody Reine looked down on the starship that would be her next home, possibly. The Peregrine. Saber-class. Recently court-martialed captain. As lovely a starship as she had seen in all her years as a Starfleet medical officer. As lovely as the several she had cycled through in the last few years alone.

She sipped her cooling black coffee and checked the time as it flipped into 0601, then chugged the rest of it and put her mass of unruly black hair up in a ponytail. She had been on Starbase 118 for just over a week and that was already years too long. Grabbing her bags she turned and swiftly made her way to the nearest turbolift.

Stardate 2365.02.17
Starbase 118; USS Peregrine Docking Bay - 0624

They were always much larger than she expected, these ships. Really, The Peregrine was on the smaller side of average in size compared to the others she had lived and worked on as of late, but that was neither here nor there. As Dr. Reine made her way aboard, her only expectations were on her own staff. She had worked with dozens by now, some worth their weight in gold, some who had only the grace of their own gods to explain how their crews ever made it off their starships alive.

Melody made her way through the corridors to her quarters, nodding politely to any she passed. The hallways were fairly bare, but then it was both early still, and those awake were busy preparing to make weigh in the next couple days. She watched each rushed officer in quiet envy as they hurried past her. She couldn’t wait to immerse herself in her own preparations and get away from this place.

Finally, she stood outside the door to her quarters, took a breath, and stepped inside. From what she saw they were fairly standard: sleeping place, eating place, washing place, etc. If there was anything unique about this room, the few seconds she took to walk inside, drop her bags, and walk back out didn’t afford her the chance to see it.

“Computer, locate Commander Tochi Zai.”

Dr. Reine walked onto the bridge eager to meet her new XO. How the head managed was often a decent indicator as to how the body operated, in her experience. He seemed to be finishing up a conversation near the flight control station as she approached, and she stopped to salute as he turned to her…

At the sound of approaching footsteps, Tochi lifted his gaze from the RCS diagnostics that were scrolling across the CONN and glanced over his shoulder. A human woman with olive skin, dark wavy hair, and large brown eyes drew to a stop just a few steps away and rendered a salute. He recognized the woman’s face from a Starfleet dossier that had come across his desk only days after the Peregrine had been tucked in at the Starbase but, at the moment, her name escaped him… We’ll be reminded of that soon, enough, he decided, returning the woman’s salute along with a congenial smile

“Good morning, Sir, as your new Chief Medical Officer, I wanted to introduce myself.”

As the salutes fell away, the newly assigned Doctor followed up by offering her hand. Tochi’s cool fingers folded around it and offered a welcoming shake.

“I am Doctor Melody Reine, and I look forward to working with you and the rest of the crew on The Peregrine.”

“Yes,” the Trill smiled warmly, “good morning, Dr Reine. We’ve been expecting you. Welcome aboard. A moment, if you please?”

Melody nodded and clasped her hands behind her back as she watched her XO at work.

LCDR Zai turned back to the Andorian woman who sat at the helm and pointed at a particular string on the diagnostic display, there. “We don’t like the looks of that,” he informed her, “The angle looks all right but the readings from the torque buffer seem to be a little off. Coordinate with Engineering and see if we can’t get that adjusted.”

“Aye, sir,” the silver haired Andorian responded, her fingers flitting over the console, “I’ll get it taken care of.”

With a nod, Tochi turned back to Melody. “Our apologies, Doctor,” he smiled, “even in spacedock, we seem to find ourselves exceedingly busy. Have you found your quarters and office, as yet?”

She offered another curt nod, "Yes Sir, I've been to my quarters and plan on heading down to sickbay in just a moment.”

“Good enough,” Zai nodded in return, “If you discover that there may be anything lacking in your facilities or if there is anything you might need, don’t hesitate to let us know.”

“If I may, I would also like to congratulate you on your promotion to Lieutenant Commander," she looked around the busy room, thinking of all of the repairs and refit work she had seen being done from afar in the last couple days, "I trust the transition has gone smoothly?"

His smile widened a bit when she offered her congratulations and the spots dappling his temples and cheeks may have darkened a shade; “Thank you, Doctor. We appreciate that.” The Trill’s gaze tracked hers as it swept an assessing circuit around the bridge. The sight of his crew at work reminded him of just how much had already been accomplished since Silas had been taken into custody and, even more so, how much had yet to be done. He was beginning to wonder about how much sleep he’d missed in the last couple of days when Melody’s last question registered in his mind. “As smoothly as can be expected under the circumstances, we suppose,” Tochi grinned, trying to chase the tiredness from his brain as his eyes met hers, again.

Melody noted a brief look of weariness from the otherwise congenial commander and continued, "Well, I've heard from a few flitting about the Starbase that you might actually present some competition for me in a fencing bout. I'd like to extend an open invitation to you to challenge me if we ever find the time. Though," she offered a small, wry smile, "While physical exercise is an excellent reliever of stress, I wonder how the commander will handle his defeat?"

Tochi’s grin broadened at that, then, one brow arched in a quizzical fashion and he chuckled softly as he sketched something of a bow. “The art of victory is learned in defeat, my dear Dr Reine,” he winked, “and it’s only bitter if one swallows it, yes? We look forward to testing your skills. Perhaps later this afternoon if settling in doesn’t find you too preoccupied?”

"I'll look forward to it," she replied, hoping to relieve some of the tension that had been building in her, having been anchored at this Starbase for what felt like much too long.

“Very good, Doctor,” the Peregrine’s XO nodded, once more extending a hand to shake hers, “Again, if there is anything you find that you may need, just say so. We look forward to catching up with you, again, when there is more time to talk.”

"Thank you Sir," Melody said, dismissing herself and heading back to the turbolift.

"Sickbay," she ordered of the computer and felt the lift drop on its way down to Deck 4. The doors opened and Melody took a deep breath before heading down the corridor.

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 1 – Bridge, 1155

Drake sat in the Big Chair as the final reports came in to validate that they were, in fact, ready for launch.

"All readings are nominal, Captain," came the report from Pretty Officer Amai.  "It looks like we are clear to decouple."

Drake nodded.  "Thank you, Mister Amai." he replied.  Just as he was about to order Ensign P'Tammah to proceed, the turbolift whooshed open to admit Lieutenant Commander Zai and a gold-shirted, wolf-faced Lieutenant that Drake had yet to meet.

OOC: sorry to put words in mouths here.  If the players disagree, we can edit.

Tochi nodded at Drake and slid into the conn.  Meanwhile, the new lieutenant snapped to attention and offered a salute.  "Lieutenant Nyle, reporting for duty as the Chief Operations Officer, sir."

Drake returned it and asked a fairly rhetorical question.  "Cutting it a bit close, aren't we, Lieutenant?"

OOC: any response, or none.

The Captain waved off the reply.  "Take your post, Mister Nyle.  We are ready to make weigh."

Drake frowned as Nyle slid into the spot previously occupied by Amai.  The new Ops chief was of a species that he had never personally encountered.  He knew of two or three felanoid races - the Peregrine had an excellent Caitian engineer -  but off the top of his head, couldn't place a canid people.  "Maneuver us clear when you're ready, Commander Zai," he ordered.

Something clicked, and Silas perked up slightly.  Daa'vit - that was it.  He had heard of them, but was unaware of any Starfleet officers from that world; had certainly never served with one.

Once they were clear of the station, the Captain gave the next order.  "Tochi, take us out at heading 225, mark 110, one quarter impulse, please."

OOC: assuming an affirmative.

Once the Peregrine cleared any potential encroachments, Drake took his feet.  The idea of an officer that he knew nothing about sitting at a bridge console - let alone heading a department on his ship - caused Silas no small aount of consternation.  "Commander Zai, I'll be in my Ready Room.  Let me know when we hit about thirty million kilometers from Starbase 118; that ought to put us safely out of any traffic.  You have the CONN."

**********************************************************

Silas had just begun poring over Nyle's file in his PADD when the door chime rang.  Biting back annoyance in his voice, he spoke up.  "Come."

He glanced up as the door admitted a large man with flowing blonde hair, a robotic arm, and an enormous grin.   “Lieutenant Commander Eric Thorson reporting to resume duties as Chief Engineer, sir!” the engineer bellowed with exaggerated precision.

Grinning like an idiot in response, Drake took his feet. "Eric!" he exclaimed.  "You look a hell of a lot better than you did the last time that I saw you!  It is so good to see you again!"

Silas shook his head.  "I honestly had prepared myself for life on a penal colony, but I wouldn't have been surprised with the gallows.  Sometimes, what is right and what is allowed are not the same things.  But enough of that... how are you?  How are you feeling?"

“So far, so good, Sir," Thorson replied.  "I haven’t had any further…episodes…since that last one in Engineering, and all the doctors tell me that there should be no further issues. They were unable to find any traces of anything lingering inside me, and they seem pretty confident that everything should work like it’s supposed to from here on out. As for me, I am ready and able to go back to work. As soon as we’re done here I am headed to stow my gear and then to Engineering.”

Silas nodded.  "I was damned worried that you were done for, and having to leave you like that made me sick.  Having you back is the best news I've had in some time.  Well, aside from not being fitted for a noose, of course," he added with a wink.

Eric grinned. “Thanks, Sir. It’s great to be back. I told Tochi that we need to have a more proper reunion later tonight; you’re most welcome to join us.”

Drake grinned.  "If there is real alcohol attached to that invitation, I'll do my best to make it.  I've only been on board an hour, myself.  "He gestured to the PADD on his desk.  "I literally just laid eyes on my Ops chief for the first time, have yet to meet the new doctor, and Riva has stacked enough paperwork for me to choke a hippopotamus." He shook his head.  "No one told me that being a hero required some many forms!"

“Understood, Sir," Thorson replied.  "Permission to get to work?”

Silas arched an eyebrow.  "Why are you still in my ready room?  Go do something useful! Dismissed!"

Eric grabbed his duffel and headed for the door. “I’ll contact you as soon as I see what’s what in Engineering and make sure we’re ready to get underway down there.”

“Sounds good, my friend,” Silas replied. “Glad to have you back.”

USS Peregrine
; Deck 1 – Bridge, 1228

Drake slid into his chair, knowing full well that there was a little touch of vanity at play, here. His protests to Eric had been genuine; he had enough work to weigh him down for the next two or three days. And Tochi was certainly qualified to not only lay in the course, but to give the commands to take the ship to warp.

And yet… after nearly twenty years in space, he found himself tingling with a bit of a thrill every time his ships went to – or dropped out of – warp. Some burning passion deep inside drove Silas to want to explore whatever was out there, so of all the vices available to him, the Captain felt that obliging this little thrill was fairy harmless, as vices tended to run.

“Commander Zai, lay in a course for the Trevil system please,” he spoke.

When it was done, he hesitated just a moment, content to drink in the wonder of the stars scattered across the viewscreen.

But then, the moment was done. “Warp factor five; engage.” Immediately after Drake spoke, the view outside distorted. Stars turned to streaks, and the view shifted away to the surreal visuals of a ship at warp.

Now then, time to start the housekeeping, Drake mused.

Pulling out his PADD, The Captain set out invitations to all of the department heads for a briefing at 1600 hours. Once that was done, he took his feet again. “Commander Zai, I think I will drop by and introduce myself to our new Chief Medical Officer. Once again, you have the CONN.”

Vulcan Lunch

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 3 – Mess Hall 1230

Master Chief V'lur walked away from the replicator, tray in hand and headed to a table with two seated Vulcan's in yellow uniforms.

"Greetings Mr. Se'tek," He noded to the one on the left. "Greetings Mr. Tolaris."  Noding to the other one and then taking his seat with them.

"Greetings Master Chief V'lur." Se'tek said, "I hope you find this day enjoyable."

"Yes, Master Chief, it is agreeable that we are underway.  We have been in spacedock for too long." Tolaris replied.

"Yes, I agree, it is beneficial for the Peregrine to be underway." V'lur spread his napkin on his lap, and took his fork in one hand and knife in the other.  "I am pleased to report that we have a new Ensign in the Flight Control department.  One Ensign Bradley Garner.  First impressions are possitive so far."

"How fortuitous," Tolaris replied pausing in his meal. "Our head of Operations is also a new arrival on the Peregrine.  Lieutenant Nyle, I have not yet formed an impression.  While he does seem to know the functions of his possition, his countenance is difficult to discern.  Though I have never encountered another Daa'Vit, regretfully I have nothing to compare him to."

Not to be outdone Se'tek shares his news, "Today is a most fortuitous day.  Lieutenant Commander Thorson has made a full recovery and will be returning to his possition of Cheif Engineer for the remainder of our tour."

As the three men shared their news two more approached their table with trays from the replicator.  One of these wore the blue of Starfleet Medical, the shorter one in a Vulcan uniform.

"Excuse me gentlemen," Toriak interupted. "It would please me greatly to introduce to you our departments newest Medical Technition, may I present Vulcan Decurion Poe Saril."

Introductions were exchanged all around, and the two men sat down to enjoy the afternoon meal with the other Vulcans.

At another table in the mess hall Garner and Owen were listening to Kukkonen regail the younger personel about the Chief's Poker game between bites of his lunch. He lamented on how Chief Cook wiped the floor with not only him, but Brooks and Palmer as well.  Regardless he was looking forward to their Monday night games.

Garner was begining to get ideas about life on the Peregrine.  Maybe the other Ensigns wanted to have a poker night of their own, or maybe something more active like Parrises Squares, he was sure there was a holosuite version.  He'd have a to check out the holo library, and get to know Blackmon, Jenneric, Maize, and the other new Ensign Forb.

"Aye, sir! Punching it!"

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 1 – Bridge, 1157

Tochi edged past the still opening turbolift door, strode purposefully onto the bridge, and offered a nod of acknowledgement (or was it apology) to Captain Drake as P’Tammah slid out from behind the helm. “Thank you, Vaela,” he murmured, taking the seat himself, now.

"Lieutenant Nyle, reporting for duty as the Chief Operations Officer, sir."

"Cutting it a bit close, aren't we, Lieutenant?"

Seems to be the way of things every time we visit this starbase, Tochi mused absently as he verified that Peregrine was clear of all moorings and brought the ship’s maneuvering thrusters to station-keeping.

Behind him, Silas ordered Lt Nyle to his post and, after a brief pause, said; “Maneuver us clear when you’re ready, Commander Zai.”

“Aye, sir,” Tochi responded, “All moorings and gantry-ways are clear, RCS and Impulse engines are online. Taking us out, now.” A quick series of taps on his console started the ship in motion and brought her about to face the spacedoor that was now yawning open. The Trill couldn’t help but smile a little at the sight of the stars beyond and, for a fraction of a second, he entertained the notion of leaving the station in Peregrine’s wake at half-impulse. Decorum won out over desire, though, and, per protocol, LCDR Zai eased the ship into space using only thrusters.

Once they were clear of the station, the Captain gave the next order.  "Tochi, take us out at heading 225, mark 110, one quarter impulse, please."

“225 mark 110, one quarter impulse” Zai acknowledged as he adjusted course and nudged the impulse engines to life, “Aye, sir.”

Moments later, Tochi heard Drake get to his feet. “Commander Zai, I’ll be in my Ready Room,” Silas stated, “Let me know when we hit about thirty million kilometers from Starbase 118; that ought to put us safely out of any traffic.  You have the CONN.”

“Acknowledged, Captain,” the Trill returned, “Present velocity should see us at your waypoint in 26.7 minutes.”

Despite having the Bridge, Tochi remained at the helm, for the duration of those 26 minutes. Sitting in the Big Chair was all well and good but he’d had his fill of it in the past few days; he was perfectly content to be at Peregrine’s controls, again, and tend to his command duties from there. The time passed uneventfully, of course – the only minor exception to that being Eric’s brief appearance and the chorus of “welcome backs” that it precipitated – and, at 1226 hours, the CONN chirped to let Tochi know that they were nearing the specified distance from Starbase 118. He tapped the console to silence the notification and sent a message to Silas.

In short order, Captain Drake emerged from his Ready Room and slid back into the command chair. “Commander Zai, lay in a course for the Trevil system please,” he spoke.

With a nod, Tochi glanced at the NAV panel, plotted a course for the Trevil system, and cued up the warp drive. “Course laid in, Captain,” he said, glancing back at Drake, “we are good to go.”

Silas hesitated a moment, staring at the stars scattered across the viewscreen, then nodded; “Warp factor five; engage.”

With pleasure! Zai’s gaze turned back to the viewscreen and his hand fell on the console. The view outside distorted. Stars turned to streaks, and the view shifted away to the surreal visuals of a ship at warp.

“Commander Zai, I think I will drop by and introduce myself to our new Chief Medical Officer,” Silas intoned after a moment, “Once again, you have the CONN.”

“Of course, Captain,” Tochi smiled, “We think you’ll find her quite interesting.”

Doctor and Chief

((Collab with Altaira))

Stardate 2365.02.17
USS Peregrine; Deck 4 - 0659

Melody stepped off the turbolift, following the computer's directions to sickbay. She noted the markers for the cargo bay and science labs as she passed their corridors and simply glanced at the door to the CMO's office as she made her way. The doors opened with their notable whoosh and she stepped inside.

She walked in to the sight of her staff standing in formation, awaiting her arrival. Often this first introduction to her staff included only a few, or simply the head nurse. This was a welcomed formality, and an assuring indication of the way this staff was ready to be run.

A tall, impressive figure stood at the head of the line, almost meeting Melody at the door. In researching her staff back on the Starbase, she learned both from her record and from personal accounts that Chief Dana Cook was no one to be trifled with in any capacity. Melody held back a grin, remembering the angst in the eyes of some of the junior officers as they recanted their experiences having been reprimanded by the Chief Petty Officer.

Dr. Reine clasped her hands behind her back, skimming quickly over each of their faces, already so familiar to her from her research.

"Good morning, and thank you for your welcome. I am Dr. Melody Reine, your new Chief Medical Officer, and I look forward to working closely with each of you in the days and months to come. Now, I don't want to keep you from your duties any longer. Please carry on and I will be with you shortly to introduce myself personally."

Her dismissed staff broke away to their separate stations, and for the first time since the end of her last assignment, she began to feel at ease. The busy work of the staff, the sterility of each station, everything in its place and seemingly in order; these alone were some of the warmest greetings she could ask for when coming aboard a new ship.

She turned and looked up at her Head Nurse, her hand extended, "Chief Dana Cook, I presume?"

Dana watched the staff be quickly dispersed and couldn't keep a slight frown from gracing her lips, she watched and then turned back to the new CMO as she spoke; she looked down at the hand and then grasped it firmly as she replied, “Yes Ma'am, that would be me.”

"Happy to finally meet you and get this department ready to make weigh. Though, by the looks of it, we seem to be in excellent shape. I assume I have you to thank for that?"

“Yes, Ma'am,” Cook said with a faint smirk, she ran a tight ship and she knew it. Glancing back at the staff as they moved on to look busy, then Dana turned back to the doctor.

“Pardon me Doctor,” she began, her tone showing she was a little confused, “did you not want to meet all of the staff now, or perhaps you wish to conduct your own one on one interviews?”

"That is correct, Chief Cook. As I understand it, there is much to get done, and I prefer not to dally. From what I've heard, you tend to work in that same vein. I hope that that is true," she folded her arms, "That isn't to say I don't appreciate the formality, or that I don't expect it in the future. I do. I would just like to get to work and ready to go as soon as possible. That being said," she said, turning slightly toward the rest of the room, "will you walk and talk with me?"

Cook gave one of her rare little smiles an nodded at the Doctor's mention of “not dallying”. When the doctor asked to walk she gestured to the Sickbay and began walking, “Let me give you the tour of your new sickbay.”

Chief Cook walked the entire Sickbay, showing the new CMO all of the equipment they had available; she didn't waste time explaining any of the equipment, as the doctor no doubt knew and understood the use of all of the items. She merely showed her where things were kept and discussed the state of the medical supplies, which were fully restocked during their stay at the Starbase.

“As you can see,” Dana concluded her tour by arriving with the doctor to the door of the CMO's office, “we have just about everything we could hope for on a ship of this size.” She leaned in slightly and lowered her voice so only the Doctor could hear her and Melody leaned in as well, “and this staff is quite capable, if I do say so myself.”

A loud CRASH sounds out as if on cue, and several of the staff let out a surprised shout at the sudden unexpected noise. The doctor herself straightened immediately and looked around for the cause of the commotion. Chief Cook whirls around and sees Crewman Reynolds standing over a tray of scattered instruments on the floor and looking at the Chief and the new doctor with wide eyes. Cook continues to look for a moment, only raising her eyebrows slightly at the Nurse, before Reynolds says softly, “I'm sorry.” The nurse then squats down and begins to hastily pick up the items and put them back on the tray she had been carrying; others join in the help her accomplish the task more quickly.

“Although,” Cook begins as she turns back to the Doctor, “there is still room for improvements.” She gives the doctor a slight smile and a shrug.

Reine returns her smile sheepishly, "We've all been there before. I like to let my crews know that I expect things done right the first time, as is obviously standard. However, should things go wrong, as they're wont to do," she nodded to the blushing nurse, rising with the tray in her hands, "I ask only that it is resolved quickly and effectively so that we may move along." She turned toward her new office door and stared for just a moment before turning back to Cook, "I suppose this is me. If you'll excuse me, Chief. Unless there is anything else vital you would like to discuss right now?"

"Nothing else for now, Doctor, " Dana said and inclined her head slightly before turning to head towards her station.

"Excellent. I shouldn't be long. Oh, and Cook," Reine says as her head nurse heads back to her station, a grin slowly spreading across the docter's face, "I'm sure I wouldn't provide much more use than a punching bag to you should we ever step in the ring together, however if anyone around here is brave enough to step up to you in a bout, I'd love to see you in action."

Dana chuckled, "That would be good Doctor," she said with a widening smile, " besides I'm sure my opponent will need a Doctor."

Reine's smile broadened, "Very good, see you soon then," and with a small breath she steps into her new office.

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine; Deck 4 - CMO's Office - 1055

Melody sat hunched over her desk, signing off on form after form, as she had found to be commonplace in these days leading up to departure. Her crew really was quite capable, as Cook had mentioned that first day, so that was a relief. She looked up at the time and sighed quietly in frustration. She had hoped they would be well on their way by now. If more than anything else, the doctor hated these moments of stagnation.

=/\= Now hear this. This is Commander Silas Drake.=/\=

Melody straighted, her ears perking at the sound of their captain's voice. Finally, she thought to herself, feeling the corner of her mouth rise in a small smile.

=/\=Effective immediately, I am re-assuming command of the USS Peregrine. As I understand it, Starfleet Command is anxious for us to stop taking up space here at Starbase 118, so as soon as our refit is complete, we will be making weigh. Captain Drake out.=/\=

The doctor stood up. Finally, she thought once more, making her way around her desk and out her office door. Chief Cook was already preparing their crew for the departure, and for the eventual arrival of their captain. Reine stopped to look around for just a moment, once again basking in the efficiency her team, before joining Cook in their preparations.

Ready to depart

Stardate 2365.02.19
USS Peregrine;  Sickbay - 1100

=/\= Now hear this. This is Commander Silas Drake. Effective immediately, I am re-assuming command of the USS Peregrine. As I understand it, Starfleet Command is anxious for us to stop taking up space here at Starbase 118, so as soon as our refit is complete, we will be making weigh. Captain Drake out.=/\=

Chief Cook sighed slightly as the Captain signed off; she didn't know how others felt, but she was glad that Drake was back in the Captain's chair. She liked Drake, and didn't like change, the worst change was one of command. Having a new CMO was bad enough, well she had to admit in the last couple days, she had come of like Melody and thought she was going to be a good doctor. Of course, the real thing would be when things came to a head; they would all see what the new Doctor was made of, for sure.

She turned as the CMO's Office door opened and the Doctor walked into the Sickbay. Chief Cook was the only one there, standing with PADD in hand, going over the final list of supplies that had been received from the Starbase.

Good Morning Doctor,” Cook greeted Melody as she walked into the room, “we received the final supplies we were waiting on and everything is squared away and ready for departure. I let the remaining staff go and resumed the standard watch rotation.”

Dana had sent the new watch schedule to the Doctor yesterday and was sure she had already gone over it.  Since she hadn't gotten back to her with any changes, Cook assumed the Doctor hadn't had any issues.  The watch rotations in medical were 12 hr shifts, and the Lt. had the 1st shift today, while Cook had the 2nd.  Of course, this was for standard operations, if there was an emergency, all medical staff could be recalled as needed.

(OOC: I'm not sure what day of the week this is, so I'm not sure of the watch schedule right now. Perhaps someone could let me know? )

(Edit: Ok, found out the day is Friday according to page 1 of Q&A.  So edited post to remove other medical staff as the Doctor and Cook are the ones on duty today.  Another edit, as I noticed I had the wrong Deck listed as Sickbay, seems it's on Deck 3 according to the ships plans. Oops!   I'm just going to put Sickbay as there is only one, right? )
