The Archangel of Scyon City

Real Name: Samael

Identity: Public (but believed by most to be a myth)

Occupation: None (formerly sideshow freak)

Gender: Male; Age:Unknown (appears to be in mid-20s or early 30s)

Height: 6' Weight: 150 lbs Eyes: Ice blue Hair: Black

Known Relatives: None

Base of Operations: St Sebastian's Cathedral on the city's waterfront

Background Information:

The creature calling himself Samael (likely more commonly known to the general populace as "the Archangel of Scyon City") seems to be as much a mystery to himself as he is to those who may have ever encountered him. The earliest memories he can recall date back no more than five years and primarily involve being a sideshow attraction in a travelling show called "Anatashia's Carnival and Mystical Menagerie." His first memories, in fact, are of awaking in the cage that was to be his home for the next several years and his brutal introduction to the Carnival's owner, Stephen Anatashia, who gave him the name Samael and informed him that he was property of the carnival. Many of Samael's other memories involve little more than being forced to perform for (or just being gawked at by) the carnival's paying customers, being shackled and caged when he wasn't performing (as well as being beaten by his brutish handlers when he tried to refuse doing one or the other)... perhaps the worst of his memories, though, are those of the "torture" inflicted upon him by Anatashia himself. Whenever the man appeared (whether it was to praise or taunt him) Samael always felt an overwhelming sense of weakness, dread, and despair as if Anatashia's presence alone as somehow draining the life energy (and perhaps his sanity) from him.

Samael isn't sure exactly how long suffered under Anatashia's domination... it may have been months, years, or even centuries as far as he could tell... but, not long ago, when the train transporting the carnival and its menagerie through a rainsoaked night derailed not far from Scyon City The crash killed a few, injured many, and, through some twisting of the fates, loosed Samael from his cage. His handlers tried to return him to his cage, of course, but, freed from any sort of restraints for the first time in literally as long as he could remember, Samael was able to overpower them and, in the chaos that ensued, disappeared into the storm-shrouded night. The next morning found him on the outskirts of Scyon City, still being pursued by Anatashia's minions (now heavily armed). Samael found his way into a museum via a rooftop entrance where he hoped to hide from his pursers. It was in this museum that Samael acquired the bits of armor that he now wears and the spear he carries with him - his attempts to hide from Anatashia's men had proved fruitless and, as the thugs stormed the museum, Samael stripped the armor and weaponry from one of the museums displays and made effective use of both in the battle that followed. In the end, the museum was in shambles, Anatashia's men were dead or very near it, and Samael himself had flown off deeper into the city to recuperate. Since this time, reports of a "birdman" or an "angel with black wings" have been few but not entirely uncommon in Scyon City... Sometime these accounts are simply vague or distant sightings but there have been others, alternately describing the thing as a winged thief or angelic saviour. Samael considers himself to be neither of these things and would rather simply be accepted as "a normal man" (or, at the very least, not be treated as some outcast freak) but is unsure, given his appearance and abilities, how he will ever make this happen. He has heard tales of another world, called Arcadia, that is somehow connected to the one in which he now exists and, often times, finds himself wondering if that isn't the world from which he originated and, if it is, how to get back... and, if Arcadia isn't his home, what place is?

Description:

Samael is a tall and slender but sleekly-muscled creature with raven-black hair that falls in waves to his shoulders, piercing blue-eyes that seem to look through (or perhaps into) rather than directly at whatever his gaze might fall upon, and, most distinctively, a pair of large, blue-black feathered wings that issue from his back - (estimates from "witnesses" variably put his wingspan between 16 and 25 feet). He is often seen adorned in a piecemeal (breastplate, greaves, and gauntlets) and somewhat tarnished suit of silvery plate-mail and carrying a large, broad-bladed spear.

Disturbance

Real Name: Preston Smith

Identity: Unknown

Occupation: Former Black Ops Operative [came back off 'retirement' grid due to assassination attempt]

Known Relatives: Unknown

Base of Operations: Unknown Secret Base

Age: 35

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 230

Hair: Black

Eyes: green (r), blue (l)

Background: Preston Smith was born and raised in Mercy, Michigan and had a love for the outdoors in this fictitious upper lower peninsula town. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing sports.

He was an avid reader of comic books and some science fiction. He also was active in the high school Drama Club and a local Theater Group and became quite an accomplished Thespian.

His best friend, ironically, was Delbert 'Dweeb' Watkins. A sickly, emaciated type who could not participate in sports, but served as the equipment manager and became the focal point of torment from the other high school jocks.

Preston stood up for him and they became fast friends, especially for their shared interest in comic books and Drama. Dweeb was also gifted in Computer Sciences and able to hack and develop software, hardware and even servers etc.

Raised by his grandfather, because his parents were secret agents in some unknown government black op and rarely home, Preston was well to do because his grandparents on both sides of the family had set up trust funds that provided payments for his education beginning at age 17.

At the age of 18 he enrolled at Bayview University (another fictitious Michigan place) to pursue a Journalism and Coaching Career. However, he soon gravitated to immersing himself in Drama and emerged as a budding stage actor, winning several Thespian Honors.

This, along with his Journalism Career, plus his desire for coaching found him gravitating to the college Fencing Squad (he walked away from the other sports because even in college Dweeb was picked on, so Dweeb and Preston settled into the Fencing Squad as equipment manager and Fencing Athlete respectively) and Preston became quite accomplished with fencing skills. So much so, that he traveled with both the college Drama and Fencing clubs.

He won several million dollars in a state lottery at the age of 19 and although immersed in the Drama and Fencing Squads, Preston was soon hounded by his so called friends due to winning the lottery.

His girlfriend/fiancee accused him of being 'cheap' when he proposed to her and offered her a 10 thousand dollar engagement ring. The only person who did not seem to want to be his friend because of the money was his friend Dweeb.

Therefore, he decided to let Dweeb secretly invest 30 million dollars of his winnings, while he went on a partying spree, during his last tour of Europe with the Drama and Fencing Squads.

After he was spurned by his girlfriend, Preston dropped out of school and back packed around Europe and also went to Asia for a period of two and a half years to 'find himself' and also to fence with various sword masters he had the honor of meeting in his travels.

He also was introduced to a variety of hand guns and in his travels would have the good fortune to be invited to shoot various weapons (hand guns and rifles) with his numerous hosts during his travels.

He was even exposed to the use of demolition weapons, but was not a complete expert in this area.

Upon returning to Michigan, he was greeted by the news from his grandfather of his parents tragic death in a mysterious automobile accident somewhere in London. Dweeb was also failing in health, but continued to secretly invest the lottery winnings, although he was now confined to getting around with the aid of crutches and sometimes a wheel chair.

Preston decided to go to London to find out what happened to his parents. It was at this time that he took up drumming for a local rock n roll garage band. He also got involved with a local Theater Group, where he met Myriem Foster.

The band began to get gigs and developed a following. One of the roadies for the band was named Gunther 'Gunny' Morgan.

Within six months Preston discovered that both Myriem and Gunny were in the employ of the same government black ops that his parents had been serving as secret agents. Myriem and Gunny inform him that his parents were executed by some rogue operative mole that they were trying to find.

He found this out after the government black ops representative approached him to carry on the work that his parents had been involved with for years. Through this training, he becomes adept at codes and other talents required for the job.

Myriem was an accomplished master of disguise, hand to hand combat fighter, plus knowledgeable in scientific work that gave her access to the secret laboratories within the black ops operation. Preston and Myriem became passionate lovers.

Gunny was also an accomplished fighter, especially with a variety of weapons and also an expert in explosives and other talents necessary for the job.

Preston was found to be useful as the drummer of the rock n roll band and also the Theater Troop as they would travel around the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. This gave him inroads for a cover for espionage and assassinations over the next few years.

He could party and infiltrate groups who wanted to be close associates with the band members or actors and actresses. Preston used his skills well to get information and terminate targets when called upon to do so.

He also was employed as a Journalist to cover the Rock Scene and also a variety of Sporting and sometimes Political Events. His abilities to work with both Myriem and Gunny with disguises etc brought them in contact with various unsavory characters, terrorists etc.

They were called back to the States when Home Land Security needed secret operatives to help monitor terrorists activities within the borders of the United States.

Preston and Gunny made the rounds of the various Illegal Cage Fighting circuits in several big cities from the East Coast to the West Coast and down in New Orleans.

Preston was then ordered to investigate a variety of religious organizations within the borders of the United States and possible terrorist ties to their works overseas.

He worked his way into one particular organization and fell in love with a lovely young woman whose devotion to The Bible and Jesus made him examine his wicked ways.

Preston fell off the grid when he gave his heart to Jesus and went on a 2 year mission trip to the Philippines with his young love, who he had married.

They returned to the States and traveled together holding tent revivals all across the United States. In one such meeting, the emaciated Dweeb came forward for prayer and got healed. This gave Preston the opportunity to have a secret meeting with his old friend, who informed him that he had kept track of him with his computer skills, and that his life was in danger from some unknown source.

Within a few weeks, when Preston was preaching at the tent revival, he spotted both Myriem and Gunny in the crowd. Myriem was pointing to someone when a bomb blast exploded beneath the stage, injuring Preston and killing his wife.

When Preston awakens, he is in custody within an underground secret facility. He recovers from his wounds, but his mental state is all fractured.

Most of his conversations include passages of scripture, lyrics from Rolling Stones songs or quotes from Shakespeare plays.

Thus, his own self reference to the lyrics from the Rolling Stones song Street Fighting Man:

“My Name is Called Disturbance!”

Myriem is in the facility and discovers that the seemingly random references to scripture, Stones lyrics and Shakespeare quotes are some type of code that Preston uses to reach out to those he can trust.

She helps him escape and teams up with Gunny and they somehow get connected with Dweeb, now fully healed, but who likes to use a wheel chair with a variety of weapon and computer armaments.

They have set up a secret headquarters together, now determined to find out who ordered the hit on Preston that killed his wife, while investigating the corruption of the black ops organization they were employed by, seeking to find the identity of the rogue operative who murdered Preston's parents.

Disturbance Code Names

Rocker is his Code Name for when he was under cover as a Rock N Roll Singer and especially singing Rolling Stones songs. If he is referred to as Rocker, even by Dweeb or Myriem or Gunny or anyone from his past, his reply is: ‘My Name Is Called Disturbance!”

Thespian is his Code Name for when he was under cover in a theatre troupe. His specialty was Shakespeare and often quotes Shakespeare or sometimes other theatrical or movie lines, but mainly Shakespeare.

Preacher is his Code Name for when he was under cover as a Preacher during his stint under cover with Homeland Security. He often quotes Scriptures or begins Preaching when this personae takes over.

Flynn is his Code Name for when he was under cover as a Fencer. Flamboyant like Errol Flynn and often quotes fencing or sword play terms or sentences. If he does not have an actual sword in his hands, like when incarcerated as a Detainee, his actions will be as a person actually swinging a sword in a sword fight or sword fight training. Look out if he gets his hands on a broom handle or a pipe or an actual sword, because he can be deadly with such a weapon!

Earp is his Code Name for when he was under cover in a Wild West Show, an extension of the Theatrical Troupe, as well as when he was gaining a reputation in the Secret Agency as a Hand Gun Expert from his time spent learning to be a gun-shooting marksman expert while traveling in Europe. As with the Sword Fighting, he will act out gunfights with imaginary guns, but woe to the person who allows him to disarm a guard of their firearms, because death will surely follow!

Further Note He may also have had a Code Name as Brawler for his prowess as an Under Ground Cage Fighter, when he was under cover in seedier parts of the cities where he was sent to spy or eliminate a Target for the Secret Agency, which would also make his a dangerous foe in close quarters!

Orator is another Code Name connected with his Theatre Troupe Under Cover Days! This is where he makes speeches or recites poems like ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ that would be spoken in Theatre settings! Things like the Gettysburg Address etc.

A note on mental health

As anyone who's been reading along might have noticed, this game includes a character who deals with some fairly hefty mental health issues. I'm aware that there may be some of you Innmates out there who have struggled with your own mental health problems and that, seeing such a subject broached in a "game" might be unsettling or upsetting. To that end, I want to assure you that we intend to approach this topic with the respect and sensitivity it deserves.

Disturbance's "fractured personalities" will not be used simply as a tool for dramatic tension and certainly not for any sort of comic relief. As the GM of this little romp, I'll be paying close attention to this and, should the portrayal of mental illness come near to crossing a line, I will reel it in and correct the matter as quickly as I possibly can. None of us are here to make fun of or contribue to any stigma associated with people who wrestle with their own mental health, of course, and it is my sincere hope that nothing like that will occur either accidentally or on purpose.

Thanks,

Eol

Updates

Okay gang, I've spent a little time on "world building" this morning and have updated several posts above as a result. The Most notable updates are in the Scyon City post (in which I've roughed out the city's major districts, neighborhoods, and a few points of interest) and the Notable NPCs post (wherein I've stubbed out a few folks who'll likely come in to play along the way). Feel free to poke around and, of course, make suggestions, requests, or recommendations as you will.

LOL

I'd say that depends upon a couple of different factors, really:

  • If Aly's father was a known criminal before his passing or incarceration
    • Need a name for dear-old dad and a decision as to whether he's deceased or in prison, btw
  • If the police suspect a connection between Syncorp and the Shadow Council (or any other organized crime)
  • If Aly's just a trouble-maker in general and draws their attention on the regular
  • Or if there seems to be a need for police protection given her family's "status"

If none of the above are the case, I'd imagine that the police are pretty content to let Aly be... until they don't.

Re: Preston

Works for me, Hammer!

I'm really hoping to get an opening post tacked on to the game thread at some point, today, so I can cut you all loose!

Okay...

...I've updated the first post in the game thread to give a small "flashback" style introduction of sorts to Samael and Aly. I've got a "part 2" in mind that finds Sam in the present day but I don't think that I need you all to wait for that to appear before I set you free to craft posts of your own.

Soooooo... Have at it if you like.
