Death... Where does one go? What does one do?

Maggot awoke and sat up; the space around him was cold and damp. The air was that of a swamp on a fall morning but the earth beneath him was dry and solid. He quickly moved to his feet and reached for his back, ‘There is nothing? Where is it?’ his hand went to his hip, ‘Where is my blade?’ His eyes searched the ground around him, ‘My staff. Maggot old man you are in a strange place and nothing to stand between you and what ever there is out there.’ He fell silent and still and after a few seconds he called out, “Brother, no harsh words for me?” Maggot once more went silent and still straining to hear anything. He quickly scanned the surrounding area looking for anything that could be used as a weapon.

It was then he could feel he was being watched. He sniffed at the air, ‘I know that sent. I have tasted it once before.’ He crouched low and moved his weight to the balls of his feet. The old man looked and acted more like a corned beast than a man. “If this is the after life then I have truly screwed up. But I will not go willingly into the dark realm of Hades. So God of this world step forward and meet the one who you may rule but never conquer.”

A soft laugh came from behind a fairly large and bent tree. Maggot shifted and now all his thought and powers of observation was focused on that one spot. It was then a woman stepped out. A smile on her face, the face of an angel, her skin was kissed by the sun itself and was the color of bronze. Her hair was black as raven feathers. Her eyes where those that could drain a man’s sole of any trouble with just one glance. “Oh my love you have come to me once more in my dreams. You make my undead life bearable, if only for a short time.

Maggot stood straight up and started slowly moving toward her, “I know not your face but your voice is like that of my very own.” Maggot continued to get closer; “I inhale your scent and can remember your taste on my lips but some how it is all new to me.” Maggot now stood but just a foot away from her. She looked up into his eyes. He traced every line of her face so that he would never forget.

A hair fell into her face as a slight breeze drifted by. He lifted his hand to move it toward her face when she smiled, “You can not touch me. You are not real,” sadness was heard and felt in her voice.

“But I am.” Maggot moved the hair from her face. She fell into his arms and all ceased to exist.

It was then her eyes fell open and she grew cold and pushed away from Maggot, “This can not be. You are alive and well. My… Well you have… But…” Her hand fell to her side “There is nothing? Where is it?” She grew in size and seemed to stand over Maggot. Her voice boomed and all the air around seemed to tremble in fear. “Where is my blade?”

Maggot remembered and once more he crouched low and moved his weight to the balls of his feet. With a low voice he whispered to her, “Where is my brother?” The two lunged at one another. One a great and powerful she devil, the other a mad man.

Just as the two were about to meet in full on death combat a dark shadow, just out of sight rose up. She was thrown back and Maggot was now held, feet off the ground. “It seems there is one of my soulless who has need for you. And in my mercy I have chosen to send you back.”

She stood in protest, “But my master says he is mine.”

The dark shadow pulled Maggot toward itself, “Perhaps later, but for now this one is mine to have.” Maggot was now gone…

Maggot’s eyes opened, the sting of small shards of glass covered his exposed body. He sat straight up and his hand moved to his back, he felt nothing. His eyes shifted to Cor and Alasdair that sat over him, “You two.” He shifted his weight to get to his feet when he found what he had lost. He quickly picked up the sword and put it on his back. As he was doing so Alasdair quickly ushers Maggot to the awaiting party. Maggot still fuzzy from the resent events only heard bits and pieces, something about Cor, Conall, teacher, and a duel.

A mistake

"I was gifted some additional abilities in order to keep my word. At the time I made the claim I had no spells."

OOC: I was not aware I had a raise dead left as I had both crossed off my list but DM said I had one so...

Conall.

Conall knew that the evil was going to pull a stunt like that... Going against the choice that they had made. Conall wasn't surprised, though he was rather annoyed. And Cor, even though he was weak on spells, was still an impressive fighter, and looked a bit more potent than Conall was at the moment, thanks to the shards of Amber Glass. Now was not the time to try and fight him off... It would only be suicide.

"Demon which posesses Cor. You have made your deal, and now I make my deal. Both of us are injured, and you lack Cor's potency in magicks, as he has expended much of them. My deal is this; we shall permit you to live for now. However, after a rest, when we are both back to full power, then I shall duel you, for the preservation of the integrity of your host. When we sleep however, you shall sleep under a watch, so that you do not have the idea of killing us all while we sleep, as a cowardly evil would do. When the morning comes, we shall have our exchange of blows, to settle this once and for all. Do you accept these terms?"

Cynil

Cynil moves forward to take Maggot from Conall's care. The old man seemed well enough for just having been raised but she knew that those who had come back needed time to adjust. "Come with me, Maggot, away from this contention." Cynil guided the man over to where others were gathered.

"Things are not in a good state. Kenji and Ulthok are missing, Rayne is dead as were you, but I think she was killed by the evil entity that now possesses Cor. That entity is what Conall is confronting now. It now bargains for its existence since only it can raise the dead, You just now and hopefully Rayne."

"The mirrors were the answer to this test, not looking into to them, but destroying them. I don't want Conall to do this but he is what he is a paladin to Odin. and I must and do respect his decisions such as this. "

Turning to the other Cynil offers, I have healing for those in need. Looking about she and marshal her healing spells to use them the best she can.

Siréne

Siréne watched the exchange with a cool silence. There had been little doubt in her mind that Cor would act with treachery at every possible opportunity. He would have to be dealt with, but now was not the time. Siréne did not doubt that she could overcome him with magicks, but extinguishing his life was not the answer. With Rayne still dead the dwarf was the only one with the power to call the fallen back to life. In time she would find a fitting end for him, but for now she would deal with the matters that were immediately at hand.

Although the shadows never landed a blow the glass shards had still cut her body and the elf could feel the weakness growing. Letting her awareness shift Siréne began to focus on the ever present rhythms of the Great Goddess. Life giving power flowed through her as she chanted. With a final word of power the enchantress lifted her hands to her lips and exhaled upon them the breath of life. Rather than releasing the healing magicks onto another Siréne instead took them into herself and at once felt vitality return to her body as her many wounds closed.

Once the power left her the elf looked around at her companions to see whom she could aid. When her sapphire eyes fell on Haila and she nodded. The young human looked severely wounded, worse off than any of the others. Without a word Siréne glided across the room to stand before the honey haired mage.

Spreading her hands outward she addressed the other woman, "If you will accept I can offer you healing."

((OOC: Casts Cure Serious Wounds on herself. If Haila accepts she will cast Cure Serious Wounds on her.))

Is it a Paladin, a Prince, a King? No just some crazy old man.

Cor spoke to Maggot, “"Welcome back Maggot. I have given you back your life; may you use it in a manner fitting to you."

“I will endeavor to do so.” Maggot looked at Cor with a puzzled look. As the conversation was cut short by Alasdair’s urgency for council.

It was after some council by the others and Maggot had gotten fully dressed and prepared to journey on that, Conall shot his mouth off. Maggot was now truly confused. It was then Cynil took Maggot by the hand and with kind and soft words lead him away from the confusion. She spoke of the current situation. Maggot stopped her and with a spark in his eye, “Explain to me the deal that was made before Conall put fourth his challenge.” The she elf did so and upon completion Maggot gave her a kiss, “You are wise beyond your knowledge.” Maggot then dumped his pack on the ground, “Help me find a green cloak. It is my courtly garb and I do look so regal in it.”

As Maggot, now almost in a mad man’s furry who has lost something of great value he continues speaking to the Lady Cynil. “I feel you are neutral in this but your heart is good and will do what needs to be done for the good of the party and our quest.” Maggot finds the green tattered cloth he called a cloak and as he put it on he continued. “I need you to back me and I hope the majority of this room will also back me. But be ready, I trust Cor to keep his word but perhaps this will over ride his ability to keep his word and the true evil will lash out. I also trust the two good paladins over there to see what I am about to do as siding with the evil there for making me evil in their eyes. Paladins can go through this world with closed eyes some times.” Then he stopped and looked deep into her eyes and with the wisdom of Cor he spoke, “Cor is here he is with us and he backs us in this play.” He then stands and with staff in hand he looks at the she elf once more, “Back me and perhaps we can stop the blind good and the sightless evil from killing us all.”

Maggot turned around just in time to see the Lady Sirene approach Haila. He placed a hand on her shoulder and with a smile and nod as a proud father would give one of his children, he held his foot steps and let her pass.

Stepping to the center of the room and with a booming voice that would command respect in any court, “Conall Glendower of the House Gledower! You will stand down.” With out a pause and now speak as a captain of the guard would to his soldiers, “Lord Alasdair Mackenzie of the Mackenzie Clan, are you not in charge here? Then I suggest you get your troops in line. Conall, word was given by Alasdair. Who became leader of this group when Cor could no longer lead due to the lack of support by the rest of the party. That word told to me by the Lady Cynil was, ‘That no harm will befall this party at the hand of any in this party until we are all out side of this cursed mountain. I know that what this thing says is his word and his law. Law, his law, binds the evil that is in Cor and the word spoken here is the law here and now.” Maggot glared at Cor, “I was told so when I was in the mirror of its flaw.” Maggot then turned back to the two paladins, “But it does not have to break the word that is now law here. The two of you are doing the evil work for it.”

Maggot now stepped toward the two Paladins and spoke in the voice of a caring King, “Do not listen to the words of this thing that holds Cor, it is turning you two upon one another in a manner that you can justify it and save face. When in all actuality you are turning down a path of evil. Do not given to this path. Come back to the task at hand.” Maggot then motions over to where the Lady Sirene is giving aid to the Lady Althena, “To protect the child Althena Sublayze and at the moment we need all the hands we can. Trust the evil to be what it is, evil. But you can also trust its word that it will not harm any of us. The only one here attempting to brake the law here is the Lawful.” Maggot steps back and leans heavy on his staff and reaches out to Cynil hoping she does back him and would now come to his aid, “Please Lady Cynil, I will take that moment of peace you offered earlier. The ranting of a crazy old man has zapped what strength I had left in me.”

Interesting

Cor was intrigued by Maggot's words; he had not expected to see such a show of rational thought from him.

"My word is indeed my bond and I assure you I will fully comply with the deals I make. Do not confuse good/evil with honorable/dishonorable. If you insist on a guard that is of no concern to me; in fact it will be nice to have some company to help pass the hours. But only one guard? Surely you would not insult me by such a pitifully weak insurance policy. I however will have to trust that I will not be killed while I sleep hoping that those who profess goodness will honor their pact. As for a duel; that will not occur as I need all of you alive as much as you need me. Having spent centuries trapped in here I have no desire to fail to exit this dungeon. I cannot do that on my own. As for the rest of you I would think that with two of your friends missing, one dead you would welcome all the aid you could muster. A duel can have no good outcome anyway for either I would be killed and your chance of every raising your friend would die with me or I will kill Connel and you lose yet another companion. Then of course Alasdair would have to challenge me to avenge Connel's death and once more the results would leave you missing resurrection power or a party member. I promised not to actively seek any of your deaths and so I cannot and shall not initiate a duel. If the paladins wish to break their vow and attack then I will of course be obliged to defend myself. We have no time for posturing and testoterone induced displays. If you wish we can all display our "manhood" and see whose is indeed bigger if it makes you feel better. If not, then Alasdair since you ordained yourself the new leader I suggest you listen to the wise council of Maggot and we work together to escape this place." Cor simply waited to see what deceision would be made.

It is good to hear from my brother again

As what holds Cor once more starts spewing words of praise for Maggot in one breath. Then taunting the paladins with his next, and with his last being so bold as to tell them how they should react to the current situation. Maggot merely shakes his head and whispers, "I don't know if they heard a word I said." there is a slight pause, a smile drifts across his face and he looks over his shoulder, "When you find him you will know him. He is quite full of himself at times. Reminds me a lot of you brother. Now where was that bit of peace that was offered?"

What you call Hell, he calls home......

A promise kept, yet not in the manner expected. A party member returned to life, however the oldest one instead of the intended younger one. The general mood among the party that lies and misdirection were in effect yet one, ironically the newly revived dead elder, knowing the limits of words spoken even from evil lips.
With Siréne moving to aid a strangely quiet Haila, a spell of healing offered and accepted, Cynil explaining to the newly alive Maggot the present situation between the party and Cor, then like Siréne offering everyone aid and moving to Althena as the Valar lady accepted. With Conall’s wish to duel his former mentor on the morn, with one member yet dead and two missing, clear it was to any divinity watching in in the realm of Asgard or some other holy place, that party harmony there was not, but what to do, what to do.

Having fully rebounded from the mist of death it was Maggot who best stated the obvious, that good and evil for the moment needed the other, as the traps and tests of this mountain dungeon were not alignment specific and anyone evil as well as good could end up dead just the same. It was only a matter of everyone coming to some kind of mutual agreement to work together until free of at least these tests and perhaps the mountain itself.

The mirrors destroyed, the Amber Shadows gone, and a door to the East wide open, the next steps had yet to be taken. However the manner of those steps and the order in which to take them undecided as answers to the mystery of Kenji and Ulthok remained unanswered..............

(DM OOC: Ok great posting everyone loved the reading of every ones post. The level of posting these past weeks has made the game quite enjoyable to yours truly. Please keep it up. Ok next post next Sunday.)

A spark of truth

"Since you, Maggot, are perhaps the most familiar with the corrupting influences of evil, we will heed your advice." He turns to the creature formerly known as Cor. "Do you have a name of your own to which we can refer to you, since it seems we will be companions for the time being?"

He waits a moment for an answer and takes a deep, calming breath before continuing.

"With our own struggles resolved for the moment, I suggest we take some rest. You all know we will need all of our remaining strength for the next trial, whatever that might bring our way. I see no reason to post a guard over the dwarf. It would not only reduce the rest gained by the guard, but it would be an exercise in futility. If what he says is true he needs as as much as we need him. So, as Maggot said, he will protect his best interests which means us, for the moment. So, take some rest and heal what wounds we can before we continue. It will be a long day tomorrow."

Alasdair pulls his beloved to the side for a moment check on her condition.

(OOC: His healing abilities will be used on her first. If there is any remaining he will heal as much damage as possible. He will also make sure that everyone else is stable and resting more or less comfortably before resting himself. Because I am unfamiliar with the trials and breaks in between thus far I don't know if it would be necessary to post a watch. If so I would logically suggest such a thing.)

Wisdom

"There is wisdom in your words Alasdair. From past experience we should be safe in this room from what was here though there are other beings that walk this dungeon. The risk is worth the reward I believe as we all need the rest. Tonight we rest and tomorrow we continue our journey as allies. As for a name I believe I shall go by Algrak from now on."

Algrak chose an out of the way location and began to pray.

Cynil Agrees with Maggot

OOC: Cynill never learned of the bargain that was makde with the evil Cor but I am sure others would have told.

The young elven Druidess explained what she knew about what had happened while Maggot was not with them but let others explain what she had missed while she was stoned. "Maggot, I will listen you what you have to say and if it will keep Conall foing what he should then I will back yo up." She tells the old man as she helps him back to the center of the room and lets him speak.

After Maggot had finished what he had to say Cynil did agree with him. Moving over to Conall first. "I know he is right a bargain once struck must be honored. I also know that because this was and is still Cor, your mentor and friend, it affects you deeply. As long as this thing is alive there is a chance of getting Cor back, remember that dear heart. Now I will heal all that I can as high as I can while you do what you must do to honor your Deity and you word."

Maggot come away and rest for a bit while I help the other with healing. Then I will search for the our missing friends. I do want to hear what went on in the mirror you were in so I can make some sense of this. Cynil gently supports Maggot back to his back and used his earlier discarded cloak that she folded up for a cushion for him to sit on. eat something now and rest."

Cynil makes good on her words healing all, but Cor up as high as she can. Then she searches for Ulthok and Kenji.

Food after such a long time away?

While Maggot was taking his ease, food, and water when he noticed two members of the party were not among them, living or dead.

Maggot had a thought. He used his staff to stand and called for the thing, "Aldrak will you come brake bread with me and talk. We have much to talk about, you of how or what you are and I can tell of the past events outside this stone prison we are trapped in at the moment." Maggot awaits an answer to his offer.

mealtime

"I accept your offer, but the name is Algrek. That mirror prison was no fun at all." He continues his tale as he breaks bread.

OOC: Adding the back story.

Algrek took a seat, "Well let me think. It was years ago, centuries perhaps it is hard to be sure. You see time in the mirror is distorted so that it seems as though it is both stopped and fast forwarded. There is nothing to mark the passing days and so your mind plays tricks on you to fill in the void. Anyway, a group of us has ventured in here in a way very similar to yours; we had intentions of finding the sword. We made it this far and were in the midst of this very test when I was pulled into the mirro by one known as Allanon. Since that time I was trapped in that looking glass with the only possibility of escape being to exchange souls with an unlucky adventurer. It seems your companion Cor fit that bill nicely. That is the story, not exciting I admit."
