Are we there yet?

Still on the bridge…

As the two dragon riders circled above watching Maggot, he waved at them. “No, we were never alone,” he laughed and yelled again…

On the road to Gygax…

“Never alone!” Maggot noticed the two people standing with him. He quickly smiled and put his hand down, “I was never alone either,” he whispered to them and laughed. He then spoke to the parrot, “Well Ulthok, Master of Shadows it appears we have arrived. Is this as good a place as any for your beast of burden to put down his load?” He then pointed toward the city beyond the battlefield, “I dare say that is the township of Derch.” He posed as a question to the two standing with him.

Introduction

Mena’kandur Landhrin’dren road slowly along to road expecting to arrive at his latest destination, the town of Gygax, where he hoped to find word of his cousin Sirene Tele Melete. He had been asked to meet her in Tor Miral over 7 months ago but she had not shown up. He had been searching for her ever since; sometimes he wished he had skills in tracking, but he had to rely on magic and talking to people. While he was good with magic, he wasn’t so good with the people thing. Having spent most of his life in the Spellweaver order where he mostly studied and practiced magic in the defense of the Elven forests, he seldom interacted with the world outside. That was one of the reasons he had agreed to go to the Capital City of Graymark to meet with his cousin; he needed to expand his experiences, at least that is what one of his mentors had told him.

He hadn’t seen Sirene in at least a decade, they had always gotten along well ever since she had spent some time living with his family before she went into seclusion to join the service of the Great Goddess. For the short time she spent with him he had kind of looked upon her as a little sister, and he had been as protective as a older brother towards her. Being a male he didn’t understand the Sisterhood, but he understood commitment to a cause and belief in the Old ways. Kandur’s mother was the elder sister of Sirene’s and they shared the same Grandmother, Mnemosyne the Voice of the Queen of Heaven. The old faerie blood flowed strong within him which helped him in his own pursuit of the study of magic.

So even though their professions kept them apart, they did see each other from time to time. Now, he was worried about her still in that big brother kind of way. She had gone off with a man she had met alongside the road; he didn’t know the details but it gave him cause to worry. He had tracked her for months now and he hoped that soon he might find her and that she was safe.

These worries arose again when he saw smoke rising ahead in the direction of the town, he hastened his mount and crested the rise and pulled up as he took in the scene below. Orcs? He watched for a few moments and raised an eyebrow at the appearance of a large eagle aiding the female warrior who seemed to be holding the orcs at bay. Seeing the orcs withdraw into a group readying to charge again, he took action.

His stave was tucked into some straps on the side of his saddle; he did not reach for it though but he raised his hands and began to gesture in the air. Words of power came to mind, they filled his head and visions of them burned across his vision. His lips moved, speaking the words as his hands gestured and then he pointed towards the assembled orcs. As the glyphs in his mind vanished, a ball of fire streaked from his fingers to flash across the intervening space and strike among the orcs. The resulting explosion as the fireball expanded rapidly sent orcs flying in all directions.

Seeing the result of his actions, he smiled slightly and rode down towards what was left of the fracas. By the time he arrived it was over; the warrior maiden and her eagle laid waste to the remaining orcs as they tried to flee. He rode up to her slowly and then dismounted, slipping his stave from the saddle as he turned to her.

Well met stranger, your timely arrival made this fight a short one and for that I thank you. I am named Aeria Lotr, Eagle soldier of Callahorn, and you?” the warrior woman spoke to him.

He smiled and opened his mouth to respond but before he did he heard a rush of air and turned to see if some unknown danger still existed when he saw a man in leather armor appear out of nowhere. He recognized the use of a Teleport spell, he looked over the man and saw no sign of a immediate threat but still he remained alert.

“Well now,” he said turning an eye to the warrior maiden to see her reaction, “seems another has joined us.”

“Well met traveler,” he said as a light smile graced his lips, “have you come to assist us in battle, if so you arrive a bit late to the party.”

When asked about the township, he raised a brow and shrugged, “I believe this is the City of Gygax, at least I hope so otherwise I am far off course.” He chuckled, "Derch is the other direction, so it seems you are a 'little' off course."

“I am Mena’kandur Landhrin’dren, at your service.” he said bowing first to the warrior maiden and then the newcomer.

Turning to the maiden he added, “I am glad that I was able to assist in dealing with the orcs, though it seemed you would have had them routed in short order.”

No Small Matter.......................

With the party secured to Maggot the bard made his way through the cave mouth into the sunlight. Ulthok was waiting for a spell of invisibility to settle over the once “Old Man”, but nothing happened.

As their eyes adjust to sun, the sight of a great Blue Dragon sleeping in the middle of the bridge was now all they need see. Their destination was occupied. Ulthok tightened his talons into Maggot’s should to both secure his hold but also improve his link to Maggot.

To Ulthok’s dismay he heard Maggot address the dragon.
“Well mighty blue worm, was it you who feasted upon the guardians of the mountain bridge?”

The Halfling had become use to the odd ways of the bard; he had sensed there was knowledge amidst the chaos so he held his tongue. He knew it was in for a penny, in for a pound.
When the dragon reveled the Shadow Wraith it was “game on”.

Maggot then whispered to the party, “Good friends keep your word now if you have ever not kept your word before. Keep yourselves hid and out of sight but be unto me eyes and poke me if anything needs to be taken notice of.” Master Lothor, most noble of the little-folk, that white standard says you will see your first dragon and sword wrath and live to tell about it. For with all their evil, her flag binds this one you see today.”
Maggot may have seemed a bit mad but his air of confidence let Ulthok know he was in good hands or shoulder as it was. It was time to be just the pet parrot of the bard and not draw any attention.

The next few minutes proved nerve racking as Maggot verbally sparred with the Wraith that was obviously a part of his past. But he did continue to move forward toward the center of the bridge.

It seemed to be getting tense, Maggot skillfully manipulates the conversation and Ulthok was amazed when wraith mounted her dragon and left the bridge. Then on cue Maggot stepped to the center of the bridge, smiled at the wraith’s threat, waved and in that instant vanished from bridge.

The scene shifted from the view of mountains and valley to that of recent battlefield littered dead Orcs.

“I’m so glad you knew where you were going.” Ulthok squawked. “Now to confuse these folks even more..... All ashore that’s going ashore.” Fluttering from Maggot's shoulder Ulthok landed on the ground next to the bard’s boots and reassumed his normal form. Assisting Maggot they lifted the party members from their hiding places, restoring each to their normal size.

The elven stranger introduced himself,“I am Mena’kandur Landhrin’dren, at your service.”
“Well my good fellow, the best service you would give would be to escort us into the city. It has been a long time since we enjoyed the luxury of an Inn. There is ale to be drunk, food prepared by someone else to be eaten, hot baths to be taken and soft beds to enjoy.” An innocent smile gleamed on his face as he winked at Valene….... “We do not wish to seem rude, but Great googly moogly it is grand to see a city…….. Cor my friend shall you lead us to a frothy tankard?” Ulthok roared with laughter, he was so glad to be away from the mountain.

curious

The time spent hidden on Maggot proved to be most curious. Moggot verbally spared with a shadow wraith that obviously knew the bard from time past. How and why was not discussed. Thanksfully the plan worked and the group found themselves outside the city proper and in teh company of new folks and introductions were made.

"Well master Ulthok, you done well lad. As for a tankard of ale, I would be remiss if I did not treat you to a full keg!"

Along the way to the city, Cor walked next to Maggot for a moment. "Lad, best be telling us all exactly why that creature knows you and perhaps a bit of the history between you two. Could cause a bit of problems for us all if any of us start to doubting your commitment to this journey."

Civilization

Valene was overjoyed to be back among creatures that often bathed and rarely ate one another. She stuck close to Ulthok more out of an interest in where he would choose to spend his time rather than any fear of getting lost or losing the group. She practiced restraint, keeping her hands out of the pockets of others that they passed on their way to a place for drinks. She wasn't half as interested in what would be in the cups so much as what would come out of the reveler's mouths once several of them had been emptied. She also longed to dance.

The halfling woman slipped deftly through the crowd to catch Ulthok's hand, holding him back long enough to whisper in his ear. "I want you to dance with me. It's been too long since I've met someone who could match me. Are your fleet feet up to the task?" she let her lips brush his neck as she spoke, making her breath dance across his skin. Once her request, or rather her challenge had been issued she stepped away, continuing on following the others.

Learn something new every day!

The world was swirling and everything appeared to grow in size, the already large structures of the giants appeared to grow tenfold. Lothor was dizzy and his heart pounded, colours began to blur, yet he kept his footing.

Soon enough he found himself situated somewhere within Maggot's clothing though he could not recall where. It was dark in the pocket and Lothor was unsure about what to do, he had been told to act as though he weren't there. Suddenly a booming voice called his name.

“Master Lothor, most noble of the little-folk. That white standard says you will see your first dragon and shadow wraith and live to tell about it. For with all their evil, her flag binds this one you see today.”

He was too shocked by the words to mutter a response, instead he tried to clamber up the slippery lining of the coats pocket, straining, trying to see the dragon or shadow wraith. His first attempts were unfruitful and forgetting his orders to stay out of sight. He tried again, this time with much more effort, he reached the top of the pocket and caught a glimpse of it.

The Dragon was resting, its eyes were closed, yet it still made Lothors heart flutter in fear. Its scales shimmered, the sunlight gleaming off the immense azure hide. His jaw dropped and he could not believe the way in which Maggot confidently strode towards the terrifying beast. As they got closer the dragon seemed to grow larger and larger, no doubt because of his reduced size it appeared far larger than it was, yet that thought did little to lesser his bewilderment.

Lothor had just began to deal with the fact that he was but a few yards from a Dragon when an even more terrifying figure flew into sight. Its very presence struck a chill through him that no cold had ever achieved. It was pure evil even one so uneducated on these creatures as Lothor could tell that much at least. All of his instincts told him to shrink back into the pocket out of sight and safe, but his body wouldn't move. His hands had turned to ice, frozen along the pocket edge.

It quickly became apparent to Lothor that there had been some connection between this mysterious evil figure and the peculiar bard Maggot. Lothor could not understand what this connection was and how they knew one another. Was Maggot once evil and now come good? Would it stay that way? The others seemed to trust him and Lothor was in no situation to question this now and he would have to trust the rugged figure also.

The conversation continued going way over Lothors head of things he could not comprehend. Nevertheless the wraith flew away another in tow and a dragon following. Lothor hoped it would be the first and last Dragon and Wraith he would see, yet it was obvious that this would not be the case by the words uttered by the wraith before she had left.

Lothor slipped back into Maggots pocket and slumped against one corner, utterly exhausted from the events that had just happened. A weird feeling passed through him and once again the feeling of nausea returned, this time however everything began to shrink and Lothor found himself amongst a bloodied battlefield of Orcs and townsfolk, the scenes reminding him of more simple times that seemed decades ago. Two new faces stood before him, a strikingly handsome male Human and a robed Elf who seemed to have a sense of purpose about him.

Lothor was as tired as he could remember and his eyes would only open halfway, but as he scanned his situation his exhaustion quickly gave way to excitement he was back to a town, back to civilisation. He could get a tankard of ale and taste the warmness of its taste sliding down his throat. It made Lothor want to run to the nearest tavern and sit down with a hot meal, a proper meal and relax for one day at least, something he had not done in far too long. His manners kept him there however and he introduced himself in turn to the newcomers and waited for Cor's orders to move into the town.

Know your place

Maggot smiled, “Gygax and not Derch, then we are as we should be… Well at least were we should be.” As Ulthok took his true form and then assisted with the others Maggot once more smiled, “Never alone brother… We were never alone.” He noted that Master Lothor seemed a little tired and shaky on his feet when Maggot took him by the hand and shoulder to help steady him, “Two dragons in one day and you live to tell the story. A mighty warrior you are.”

Maggot heard the words of greetings by all as he looked out over the dead. He then heard words of tankards. “Yes, food, tankards, and water for washing.” He then looked to the mage, “Mena’Kandur Ladnhrin’dren, Master of the arcane and slayer of orcs will you be joining our small company as we was away the road dust and fill our bellies?” before Mena’Kanur could answer he patted the man on the back, “Yes you will, for we are where we should be.” He smiled and continued turning his gaze, “And you Eagle rider of Callahorn, please allow a humble ranger the opportunity to give thanks and buy you and your men a tankard of ale in the Raising Moon. If I recall they have sought there that would even make a dwarf drink his fill and not grumble to much that it was not truly dwarven ale. He took the rains of the horse and nuzzled the nose and inhaled deeply, “As for you the stable near by are some of the best and if Newt still works there he might let me sleep in fresh hay. That is if my smell does not offend you and your kind.”

As the party began to move toward the city he found Cor walking with him. The idle chitchat of tankards and baths was good to Maggot, for so long he skirted places like this only going in near sundown and leavening well before dawn. The farms knew him well enough. The stable hands, those that did not mind him sleeping in an open stall knew him. Dare say even a few of the Inn keepers knew him and enjoyed it when he would tell his stories and sing songs of old. It would make their common rooms full of thirsty folk with heavy pouches. Feeling at some ease with such a large group Maggot thought to himself, ‘might see about a proper room tonight.’

“Lady Rayne perhaps you would be so kind as to join me tomorrow. If the Lady Sirene wishes it I will show her a small meadow I know of that is near by. The gods touch the water in the stream that runs through it and the grass is as soft and a cloud.” Knowing the Ranger would want to know of such places and that the Druid might want some natural time he made this offer.

Maggot was feeling quite comfortable with all these good folk around him when Cor spoke to him in hush words, “"Lad, best be telling us all exactly why that creature knows you and perhaps a bit of the history between you two. Could cause a bit of problems for us all if any of us start to doubting your commitment to this journey."

Maggot’s smile dropped form his face. He looked down at the Noble Dwarf and simply nodded his head, as a scolded child would do when caught in some kind of mischief. Cor then slipped back into the party and Maggot found himself leading the way alone. As they all made their way to the city Maggot pulled his cloak up around him and pulled his hood up to shade his eyes form the sun. He began to mumble to him self again, ‘I know but if you would have killed her when you had the chance this would all be behind us.’… ‘I know it was foolish to think so.’… ‘A proper room, no I will sleep with those that do not judge me.’ Maggot patted the horse on the neck. “What do you say to that roomy?” Maggot then produced a small flute from his things and began to play some traveling music.

Small Pleasures.............

The party made their way into Gygax. Ulthok deemed that in this area any settlement with two Inns or more gets to be called a city. Maggot had mentioned an Inn called The Rising Moon so that was his destination. Thoughts of food, drink and friends kept his pace brisk. The inside of a cheerful common room was a pleasure sorely missed.

As the party passed through the streets, Valene slipped up next to Ulthok. Entwining her fingers in his she slowed his walk, bending him near she whispered,"I want you to dance with me. It's been too long since I've met someone who could match me. Are your fleet feet up to the task?"Her breath was warm and gentle on his neck, a smile gleamed in his eyes as she tried to slip away. Ulthok was still holding her hand and deftly raised her arm spinning her in smooth pirouette. Releasing her hand he made slight half bow. As her eyes caught his, the thief mouthed, “Done”.

Yes it was good to be out of that mountain. Now what other adventure may await at the Rising Moon?

Welcome surprise

Sirène’s eyes were closed, her breath quietened in an effort to commune with her Goddess. It was a strange feeling, like being plunged into a dark, unfathomably deep body of water. Her eyes were useless, every sound so refracted it was hard to separate her beating heart from it, and she feared diving too deep for fear of losing her bearings and the ability to return to the surface.

And then there was an answer. She was torn from her body, freed completely from the world, and all those earthly concerns of love, loss, desire, fear were suddenly forgotten. She floated in weightless joy and contentment.

“Daughter.”

The voice was shrill and calm, unearthly and comforting, like every Elven voice she had ever known layered on top of each other. Sirène struggled to shake off the numbing ecstasy, tried to remember why and how it was she had come to be here.

But when she succeeded, she almost wished she had not. With each answer, the fear returned and, after the moment had passed and her eyes opened, it was only the fear that remained.

‘A!’ Sirène thought loudly when the ringing in her ears had subsided to a bearable level. She had crawled out of Maggot’s trouser pocket as a small lizard, overcome by the intense odour of the half-human’s unwashed body and clothes – ‘Goddess, he needs a bath!’ - and then further battered by the indescribable horror of having her body scattered to the winds in a shower of dust.

She now lay doubled up on the earth, her stomach cramping as it attempted to unburden itself of what remained of Sirène’s lunch.

‘Never again,’ the Elven sorceress resolved, easing her discomfort with a hastily uttered prayer. ‘At least, not until I can study that spell for …’
The thought escaped unfinished. Blinking past the rays of sunlight, Sirène saw a figure from her past, a sight she had not seen for a decade or more.

She was awake as soon as she felt the hand upon her shoulder. Even in her half-woken state her tiny form flinched in fear. But, she did not cry out. She had cried before, but no one had come. She had hoped for a hug, a soothing kiss, some words to chase away her fears. But no one had come. And now her voice was too raw, and the tears upon her cheeks too fresh for her to shed any more.

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to … I mean … I have some chocolate, and I thought …”

He spoke in a flustered staccato; one thought rapidly blurring into the next. But the gesture, the sound of his voice, the sight of his rapidly reddening face, caused a smile to tug at the corner of her lips.

“Kandur!, Sirène shouted in sudden, drunken joy. The Elven sorceress, who had seen more than a century roll by, was suddenly a girl again as she bounded to embrace the new arrival. She locked her arms tightly around his midriff, burying her face between his left shoulder and neck until her long raven-coloured bangs merged with the Elven man’s similarly coloured hair. “Cormamin lindua ele lle, toror! Nae saian luume!”

“Mani essen Arwen, mani naa lle umien sinome? Mankoi n’naa lle e’E’Loth Lo’rian? Nat’kotane cael marte? Amin cael tene nat’gorgorathen …”

OOC: Elven portion translates as:

“My heart sings to see thee, brother! It has been so long!”

“But what in Goddess’ name are you doing here? Why aren’t you in E’Loth Lo’rian? Has something happened? I’ve heard terrible things lately…"

town

Cor was headed to the Rising Moon but first he stopped to ask if there was a temple of Odin in the city. If so, he would make that his first stop. "Perhaps it is time to empty that bag of holding and sell off the stuff we do not need. Unless anyone objects, I will see to the sale and then divide the gold. Each shall have one share, new or old makes no differance, and each god's temple shall receive a half share, we may need to remain in their good graces." If all agree then Cor will go about selling the items and then head to the tavern for a meal and some ale. A bath however he would have to think about.

Again

It was no doubt the weirdest ride Ayreon had ever taken. Corellion's bow! It was no doubt the weirdest experience he had ever gone through. The paladin had had his doubts about the plan and he certainly hadn't looked forward to being miniaturized by a mighty spell. It had felt like giving control over to someone else - someone he'd only know for a few hours. And the paladin hated not being in control of his own actions. But what else could he have done other than to agree to the plan. He was hardly in the position to argue the wisdom behind it and he had had no alternatives to offer either. Besides if Rayne and Sirene trusted their lives in the hands of this half-blood called Maggot, then so would Ayreon, as he knew he could put his trust in the judgment of his fellow elves.

Ayreon could feel the overpowering evil emitting from outside the cave and automatically tried to make himself less visible in the tucks of Maggot's clothes. He had his feet tugged inside the half-elf's belt to keep himself from falling off the bumpy ride, but it was still difficult to hold on and he needed to grab the thick cotton with both of his hands. The malicious beings made him worried. But what made the paladin even more worried was the power of his god. He was well aware of the special status paladins had in the church of Corellion Larethian. The Lord had blessed him with a defensive power against evil beings making it harder for them to hit him. But unfortunately the very same power made him shine like a beacon in the middle of a night. Evil creatures would be able to sense him no matter how well he tried to hide.

As the two-legged transport stepped on the bridge and approached the Shadow Wraith and its mount, Ayreon could not help the feeling of awe towards the bard washing over him. Even in the face of such incredibly powerful creatures, the man's stride was unfaltering and steady. He could sense no fear in Maggot as they walked towards a certain death.

The conversation between the half-elf and the Wraith called Stealer of Souls or Miette HovSus was short, but very revealing. Not only did Maggot know the lady from before, but apparently the two had been lovers. The half-blood was indeed far more older than he appeared. It also seemed the woman was carrying a white standard and the bard trusted her enough to think she would honor its purpose. Ayreon would not have. In fact the blond elf was now happy he had been reduced in size, for didn't know if he would have been able to resist the urge to strike down the monster had he been standing there on the bridge instead of Maggot. It would have been a suicide for sure, but even a slight possibility to kill one of the evil Lord's servants would have been worth it.

Then after what seemed like only a heartbeat the air felt different and the world around the tiny Ayreon sounded unlike the mountains too. He couldn't quite place it, but at least he was not able to sense the Wraiths anymore. They had indeed escaped! But to where? Even through Maggot's clothes, the paladin could begin to hear the quiet cries of people in the distance, cries of wounded people, cries of people who had lost loved ones. He was no stranger to scenes of battle and could easily recognize the sounds. Cursing to himself, Ayreon started to climb down the bard's pants in haste. He needed to get back to his true self. He was of no use to anyone as a mouse-sized elf.

Trying to get back on the ground without falling took every bit of strength, climbing skill and attention Ayreon had, and therefore he missed all of the conversation going around him. The paladin had no idea how the spell could be reversed or how he could return to his former… well.. him. He could only hope Maggot did know. Then just as he was passing his "mount's" knee, his tiny hand slipped and Ayreon found himself falling… But fortunately to him the big guys fall harder and therefore the smaller one happens to be, the less the fall hurts.

Yet it did hurt. But more than that, it took Ayreon completely by surprise. For as he hit the ground, somehow the spell was broken. And all of a sudden the tattooed paladin was lying on his back normal-sized. Wasting no time, the holy warrior jumped to his feet - a fair accomplishment for a tall, muscular man wearing a full suit of plate armor. In one single, fluid motion he drew the recently gained sword from its sheath and looked around in search for an enemy. No doubt his, and apparently that of his new companions too, sudden appearance startled the unknown duo talking to Maggot. But if they were surprised, their faces didn't reveal it.

Happy to see no imminent threat to himself or those near him, Ayreon let his green-eyed gaze wander a bit further only to see the corpses of dozens of orcs and humans lying torn on the ground not so far away. Immediately a terrible feeling of sorrow hit his heart, but doing his best not to show it, the elf returned his enchanted blade into its scabbard and gave the human lady and the elven lord a deep bow. "Ayreon Larenthanar of the Royal Pegasi Riders at your service. Please milady, my lord, could you explain to us the events that have taken place here? I have fought orcs many times before, but never have I seen them walking in broad daylight."

On the Bridge--Under the Gaze OFf Dragons and Shadow Wraiths--Oh my

What had been waiting for them outside the cave was even worse thatn had been imagined. Oh they had made seveeral close gues escept for quantity and sheer enormity of the opposition. two Fragons both ridden by Wraiths, one blue one green. This is why there was obviouse acid damage and the less obcious electeic damage. Then of course was the awfulcartnage of the seen.

Rayne clung to her hold as she watch what happened next. maggot approached the Female Wraith. Surprisec, concern beyond reason. Why was maggot doing this. What was srevealed during their conversation were more intriguing facets of the man they called magoggot. Tayne hated that name for a man who had borne such a burden for so long. This is somethings she would change if she could. That thought passed quickly but was not forgotten and she continued to listen. These two had know each other at some times in their lives, Even though the Wrauth was not longer alice anymore, but rather of fould undead creature of darkness, an abomination. When the Shadow Wtaith and her mount rose into the sky as well the the grren, The spell was soiken and they all vanished from the dangerous situation on the bridge.

With a sigh at seeing a dsufferent place hopefull far form the dangers they had been in rayne signed and let herself downn off the halfpelf.

tayneps ,ind moved to the immediate futues There were things that she need to do and to get. Lessons learned in thhheir Under Mountain experience had showed her that. Survival depended on her learning those things and putting them to rights.

Howerver first and formost was this.

Turning to the half-elf Rayne spoke. "I refuse to continue to call you "that" name. Surely you have your own name. Would you share it with us. You are not the dame man who entered the mountain. Something abvioiusly happened while you were dead, for you have been transgormed. Such transformations certainly deserve renaming. I do not wish to use a name that others have given you to revile you. Vertainly we muct want a chance to be rid of it. I certainly wish you would rid yourself of something that does not show the measrue of the person you are."

As she spoke to him she did not see much about her but when she finished, true to her nature she did take in her surroundings. They were on a road with the town not too fa off but strewn around the ground wer bodies of Orcs and Humans. SHe listened for any soounds of battle first ans she moved in the direction of those bodies. Her eye aleart and her bow at the ready. t

Gygax

“Well Ulthok, Master of Shadows it appears we have arrived. Is this as good a place as any for your beast of burden to put down his load? I dare say that is the township of Derch.”
As the man once known as Eyesov HovSuS, now only as Maggot, appeared on the road outside of the town of Gygax and asked this question. He along with those riding upon him first noticed a robed Elf, a beautiful human female in light armor, and lastly a rather large Eagle with a saddle upon it’s back. However the second thing the party noticed as a whole was the aftermath of battle as upon the ground lay a number of dead Orc’s and more then a few villagers. Quickly the healers of the party seeking to help the two dozen or so more serious wounded among the villagers urged Ulthok to break his spell of Reduce and in what seemed only a second or two all were once again normal size.

However the appearance of so many strangers where only a moment ago there had been only one, he too appearing as if from nowhere, caused the female human and Eagle to act. The female drawing her swords, readied herself for battle, the Eagle lifting into the air, quickly gained height. The robed Elf having been moving to greet Maggot was caught off guard and watched as the moment unfolded, unable to stop it.

“In the name of Callahorn, hold strangers or be declared enemy!! Speak quickly of your purpose here! Or ready thee selves for battle”
A women armed with two drawn swords, an Eagle ready to dive into the attack, the air full of the smell of Orc and villager blood, the moment ripe for misunderstandings. Then from within the party, a shout of sudden glee, as Sirene ran forward throwing herself into the robed Elves arms, breaking the tension of the moment.

“Kandur!, Cormamin lindua ele lle, toror! Nae saian luume! But what in Goddess’ name are you doing here? Why aren’t you in E’Loth Lo’rian? Has something happened? I’ve heard terrible things lately…"
Using Sirene’s joy as a distraction Ayreon moved forward allowing the unit crest upon his armor to be clearly seen by the female warrior. Quickly introducing himself, yet not knowing how much this one knew of the overall mission of the various air services, turned the questioning back upon her .

"Ayreon Larenthanar of the Royal Pegasi Riders at your service. Please milady, my lord, could you explain to us the events that have taken place here? I have fought Orcs many times before, but never have I seen them walking in broad daylight."
Seeing Ayreon’s crest and having heard the Elf Paladin’s name before, the sword wielding female took in the party one last time and sheathed her swords.

“My apologies My Lord Ayreon, we had been told of your missing a few days past. I am named Aeria Lotr, Eagle soldier of Callahorn. As for what happened here, is happening everywhere, as Orc tribes long hidden have come out from hiding. The call to arms from their foul master has them conducting random raids within the many countries of Trilogy. Only a few, Callahorn among them, have not yet had such attacks. However this band were the closet raiders to Callahorn so far. Who may I ask are these others with you?”
After a quick series of introductions, the party learning from both Sirene and the robed Elf of his identity as Mena’kandur Landhrin’dren a cousin of hers. The healers of the party spread out and gave all of their stored spells of healing among the townsfolk and were greatly thanked. One of the townsfolk, the owner of the Inn of the Rising Moon, gladly offered them free two bedded rooms and a first round on the house. Another introducing himself as Newt Jenkins was the owner of the stables on this side of town and behind the Rising Moon. Seeing his only son brought back from the edge of death by Rayne, offered all a free mount from the two dozen stabled there along with the gear needed to ride them. Apologizing profusely that none were horses of war, but only of riding, he thanked them once more and after greeting Maggot followed his fully healthy son home.

“I must thank you Lord Ayreon for the healing freely given by your group to the people of this village” Aeria spoke as the Paladin rose from the side of a young man. “All of the senior Clerics of this and many area’s have all been called to war at the fortress of Craggian Core. All that remain are those of non-magical healing and many of these people you now help would have slowly died of their wounds”
Then finally the healing was done and it was not surprising that the first to speak was the Halfling Ulthok.

“Well my good fellows, it has been a long time since we enjoyed the luxury of an Inn. There is ale to be drunk, food prepared by someone else to be eaten, hot baths to be taken and soft beds to enjoy. We do not wish to seem rude, but Great googly moogly it is grand to see a city. Cor my friend shall you lead us to a frothy tankard?” Ulthok roared with laughter, he was so glad to be away from the mountain.

"Well Master Ulthok, you done well lad. As for a tankard of ale, I would be remiss if I did not treat you to a full keg!"
“Yes, food, tankards, and water for washing.” This from Maggot, looking to the Elvin mage whom he had just met. “Mena’Kandur Ladnhrin’dren, Master of the arcane and slayer of Orcs will you be joining our small company as we wash away the road dust and fill our bellies?” before Mena’Kanur could answer he patted the man on the back, “Yes you will, for we are where we should be.” He smiled and continued turning his gaze, “And you Eagle rider of Callahorn, please allow a humble Ranger the opportunity to give thanks and buy you a tankard of ale in the Raising Moon. If I recall they have sought there that would even make a dwarf drink his fill and not grumble to much that it was not truly dwarven ale.”
Taking the reins for a moment of Kandur’s horse he nuzzled it's nose, inhaling deeply. And thus gaining a rising of eyebrows from all who knew not of the Half-Elf’s sometimes strangeness. Then turning to the two others in-tuned to nature, knowing of the town and it’s surroundings, he made an offer to both.

“Lady Rayne perhaps you would be so kind as to join me tomorrow. If the Lady Sirene wishes it I will show you both a small meadow I know of that is near by. The gods touch the water in the stream that runs through it and the grass is as soft and a cloud.”
Then it was off to town with Maggot in the lead, a big smile on his face for the first time in many a month. Yet during the course of the two mile walk a few things did take place, one needed, yet not a surprise. The second desired and hoped for, yet clearly a surprise.

Cor moving to Maggot’s side spoke to the Ranger in a low voice, making there be no mistake in Maggot’s mind this was as leader of the group. "Lad, best be telling us all exactly why that creature knows you and perhaps a bit of the history between you two. Could cause a bit of problems for us all if any of us start to doubting your commitment to this journey."
Maggot’s smile dropped form his face. He looked down at the Noble Dwarf and simply nodded his head, as a scolded child would do when caught in some kind of mischief. Cor then slipped back into the party and Maggot found himself leading the way alone. As they all continued to make their way to the city Maggot pulled his cloak up around him and pulled his hood up to shade his eyes form the sun. He began to mumble to him self again, ‘I know but if you would have killed her when you had the chance this would all be behind us.’… ‘I know it was foolish to think so.’… ‘A proper room, no I will sleep with those that do not judge me.’ Maggot then produced a small flute from his things and began to play some traveling music.

As the party moved closer to town, Valene slipped up next to Ulthok. Entwining her fingers in his she slowed his walk, bending him near she whispered,
"I want you to dance with me. It's been too long since I've met someone who could match me. Are your fleet feet up to the task?" Her breath was warm and gentle on his neck, a smile gleamed in his eyes as she tried to slip away. Ulthok still holding her hand deftly raised her arm, spinning her in smooth pirouette. Releasing her hand he made a slight half bow. As her eyes caught his, the thief mouthed, “Done”.

Then the town was upon them, Cor having asked after a Temple of Odin, only to be told that the only one was to Thor, and it was locked and closed. The priests having also gone to Craggian Core and with a short stop at Aeria’s tent, they made their way into the Rising Moon proper. Only to find the tavern part of the Inn almost overcrowded with thank full villagers and their families. All wanting to give the party a shake of a hand or a hug or a kiss of thanks. Finally having greeted the whole, it seemed of this end of the city, the party and it’s two guests found two large tables pushed together awaiting them. As each took a seat a threesome of pretty barmaids rushed to take their orders.

An hour later with belly’s full of good sprites and the first real food in months, it was a good time as far as Cor was concerned to get down to a bit of business. Calling the table to a semi-semblance of order he began.

“Perhaps it is time to empty that bag of holding and sell off the stuff we do not need. Unless anyone objects, I will see to the sale and then divide the gold. Each shall have one share, new or old makes no difference, and each god's temple shall receive a half share, we may need to remain in their good graces."
However before any could reply as to their feelings on the issue of the party loot, a much more insistent matter was brought up by Rayne. Having kept this feeling in check for some time she stood and turned to face Maggot making it perfectly clear she had, had enough!.

"I refuse to continue to call you "that" name. Surely you have your own name. Would you share it with us. You are not the same man who entered the mountain. Something obviously happened while you were dead, for you have been transformed. Such transformations certainly deserve renaming. I do not wish to use a name that others have given you to revile you. Certainly you must want a chance to be rid of it. I certainly wish you would rid yourself of something that does not show the measure of the person you are."
Continuing to stand it was clear she would not sit without his answer............

(DM OOC: Ok I thought this would be a good place to end tonight’s post as it leaves a lot open for some good RP. Also feel free to back post if I missed anything. Again I apologize for the lateness of this post and hope it was enjoyable nonetheless.

the tavern

Cor looked around the crowded tavern, full of well wishers. "Seems we made quite an impression though I am not sure what we did other than show up." As the night wore on Cor asked around about the increased attacks on villages. It seemed perhaps that something was not right. Even the priests had left to join the fight. Since the healers were gone, Cor checked on the wounded and did what he could to ease their suffering, healing those most needy until his spells were exhuasted. He gathered the group together on last time before the evening grew too late, "Rest tonight then tomorrow we will gather supplies or do whatever you feel you must. We continue our journey the day after."

A Time For Fun.................

They made their way into the Rising Moon proper. Only to find the tavern part of the Inn almost overcrowded with thank full villagers and their families. All wanting to give the party a shake of a hand or a hug or a kiss of thanks.

Ulthok understood the despair the townsfolk may have been living with since their clerics and warriors had left for battle. The kindness of the party’s healers had won them all the gratitude of the people. He needed to do his part.

Passing among the children of the families, they would timidly extend their hand to the short stranger. With a smile and a nod Ulthok cast a cantrip of present as he shook their hand and a copper coin appeared in each small hand. Squeals of children’s glee fill the room.

The small mage then turned to the common, “Ah, this is a lovely sight, a truly welcoming place. May I offer a little amusement? “

Reaching out his hand Ulthok mutters “four” and cast the cantrip of Colored Lights . Four delicately colored globes appear around Ulthok and start moving as if he were juggling. Around the room the towns people cheer, for this has been the first fun they have had in a long time.
As the globes faded the group moved toward the tables that had been set for them and the crowd slowly draw away to leave them to their meal.

A pretty barmaid placed a tankard of ale down in front Cor. A smile beamed across his face as reach for the handle.

With a laugh and a wink Ulthok reach out and the tankard slide down the table to his hand. “Ah my friend you are true to your word of buying us a drink.”

Holding up the tankard, “A challenge my friend!.. Give him another tankard. Now let’s see who gets to the bottom first. On three! One….Two…. Three!”

As Cor raised his mug bright red smoke started pour out. The Dwarven leader growled as he slammed the mug on the table top.

“Ok, Ok…. “ Ulthok laughed as he set his tankard down too. “I promise this time no surprises will come out of your drink… Ready…set…go….” Ulthok lifted his mug and waved his hand. Cor deftly seized his tankard and rapidly brought it to his lips. Tilting his head back, anticipating the joyous ambrosia, but nothing came out, the mug has sealed over. This time Cor let out a roar of laughter as he placed the mug back on the table.

Raising his tankard in salute Ulthok smiled, “My friend, it has been too long since I’ve heard your laugh, it does my heart well to have that sound grace my ears. Now raise your drink and enjoy.” Ulthok released the cantrip and drew deeply on his own ale.

With foam still visible on his upper lip he addressed the party, “Let us all enjoy this fair and then later, perhaps our cleaver bard will grace us with more of his sweet music.”

Turning to Valene, “Even if I must hum or sing, you shall have music so we can dance.”

(OCC, maybe Keeper and Valene might add something.)
