reporting back

Cor, Ulthok and Althena went to meet with teh king. First pleasentries were exchanged and lost souls mourned but then more pressing business came to light. As teh last of the food was cleared away and dessert wine poured for all, the king got to the real point of the summons. Choices were laid out and the king took his leave for a bit to let the three origional party members have a moment in private. It did not tak elong for all of them to reach one conclusion and they informed the king of their decision. Then after asking for some favors in the form of useful items that could be spared from the royal aresenal they returned to the inn.

At dinner, Cor laid out the possible futures they each could choose. "Well lads and lasses, the ol' king asked us ta be a part of an elite strike force. Ah course we accepted on the spot and will serve as long as we draw breath, Now the rest of ya have a choice ta make and not take lightly. Any who wish to continue in service to the king are welcome to remain. Those who wish can instead ask a boon of teh king and as long as it is within reason he shall grant it. Land, titles and gold would not be too much ta ask. If ya stay i 'ave asked that we remain together and form a single strike group. T'would mean ya have to put up with this cranky old dwarf as leader a bit longer. So far we have survived despite our lack of teamwork. I dona expect that will be the case in the near future. I have asked teh king a personal boon, to equip us with whatever items in the royal vault he can spare. What if anything that may be I nae can tell ya."

Cor sat silent a moment.

"I will judge none a coward if ya take the reward and go hame. Ten of us set out at the beginning of this adventure and only three made it this far. The odds are stacked agin us pretty bad. Many, if nae all of us, will not likely return from this trip and the forces of evil arrayed agin us are such as ya have never seen. There are 6-9 million assorted vile beasties headed this way who want nothing more than to destroy goodness. The trials we have faced thus far are as those tests we set out for children compared ta what lies ahead. Each of ya must make up your own mind. I donna want any rash answers so take some time ta think about it. Later tonight I will visit ya each individually and receive your answer."

Cor took his leave and later that eve as promised he went to each for a private conversation.

OOC: You can feel free to post your answers here in this forum. they are only character private not player private.

Game On..................

From the tent emerged an impressive man in full plate armor. A smile spreading across the face of the Lord General Battlemount as he addressed Cor.

“Lord Trollhammer! My friend you live, when we received word from Queen Dalla of Callahorn that you were on your way here King Maridynn told me to get you, the Lady Althena and any surviving original members yet in service to him to his chambers within the fortress.”
The General was introduced to party and then the General ushered the three into the tent. The officers in the tent had prepared to honor the party that left so long ago and kneeled to Princess Althena, but the shock shown on their faces that they realized that beside the princess only two of the original nine returned. When the officer had risen the General addressed the three again.

“Sad that all but yourself and Lord Rydenham of those that left with you from Celebrimbor are dead, there was many a good warrior among them. But enough talk I must do as the King has ordered me and get Princess Althena, Lord Rydenham and yourself to him as fast as possible. As such my personal wizard will teleport you three to him.”
With that the General instructed his Wizard to teleport the three to the King.

They appeared in the main hall where King Maridynn awaited those he had charged with the quest of the Sword. They sat to dinner and the King request a full telling of all the events since the day group he had sent out to today when the remnant returned. So for the next two hours the three shared the pain, the adventure and the loss of friends and family. When they had finished the King sat quietly as he pondered all that had transpired.

Placing his wine glass down the King sighed, “Now I’ll tell you how things are now.” The King then spoke of the army of evil that had surged through the Kingdoms. The forces of the King stood 800,000 to a million strong, but they were outnumbered nearly ten to one. This is a force that could crush the defenders good.

As the Monarch continued he told that even with this there was still a bit of hope. The one that had been holding these evil forces together had been destroyed and now the factions were at odds as each tried to take control of this massive threat. That in this time of chaos the forces were split and therefore may be able to be stopped.

With that said, the King turned to Cor and Ulthok and said he once again would need a strike force to help take advantage of this opportunity. To strike back against the forces of evil. So said, the King offered the two a choice to go their way with King's thanks and rewards for their deeds……or stay and lead the next team? Cor’s leadership had proven steady and flexible so he was inclined to make him leader again; Ulthok had proven a gallant ally and would be a valuable aid.

The King offered the two titles, land and gold if they returned successful… and the same would be offered to those they chose to assist them.

Ulthok had flinched when the General had called him "Lord"; it wasn’t in his nature to relish title and he feared others would think differently of him. But “Ritter” really didn't sound that stuffy and even for a rogue it made him chuckle.

Raising his glass to the King Ulthok proclaimed.

”My King, there is little sense to me to return to a home that may soon be destroyed. I didn’t leave to serve you the first time for the gold or the glory…you know I could steal..er… find all the gold I would need…. and glory brings too much attention to a thief..ah… a procurer. ..But it just seemed the right thing at the time. So now if my old friend would wish to keep my company, I would again travel with this cranky cleric. Besides, if we survive to return, Ritter Ulthok von Rydenham has a rather nice ring to it.”

Downing his wine, the Halfling broke into uproarious laughter.

We're all friends here...aren't we?

The long ride had made Lothor weary, but the thought of rest had not occurred to him. It had not occurred to him for a long time now, well since the abysmal time spent in that awful city. Now he was in Craggian Core, the destination since his admission to the group. The journey there had been full of intrigue to Lothor. He had seen gods in human flesh, felt jealousy like never before and had witnessed acts of magic that he would never have believed had his own two eyes not seen it themselves.

Cor, Ulthok and Althena had been ushered into a command tent and the only word Lothor could catch, before he was dragged away, was teleportation, he almost retched at the thought. Happy that he was being taken away from the tent he was content to move easily with the others. He almost couldn't believe it when the leader of the guard patrol, escorting them to a private house, was Ayreon Larenthar, the Paladin himself!

After exchanging a few pleasantries as well as awkward silences they reached the lords residence they had been provided with. The group made their farewells and began unpacking in the courtyard. Lothor was so busy unloading his mount he scarcely noticed the hooded pair skulking past them and was taken aback when a face appeared below the hood. She strolled over confidently and introduced herself as Emily St. Albans, the daughter of the lord who resided here.

She introduced herself and Lothor, as always, managed to stutter a response including his name, before bowing his head slightly. Lothor was keen to get out and back to the camps they had seen briefly and made his excuses and took all his meagre belongings to his allocated room.

Once fully unpacked he decided to venture out into the camps alone, despite Ayreons advice. It was not long before he reached the military camp and forgot just how long away the refugee camps was without his mount. He was content to stay in this camp however and was able to mingle with the vast amount of soldiers, striking up conversations and finding out interesting, but not useful, pieces of information.

Time had passed far quicker than he had accounted for and it seemed as though there was some curfew unknown to him. Quickly the bumbling mass of people had disappeared to only a few worried looking stragglers. It was much harder to stay as inconspicuous and soon enough he was pulled up by a patrol headed by a hard looking lieutenant and another eleven soldiers who's narrowed eyes looked equally unforgiving.

“Hey you, hold it right there!, Lt we got‘s an unmarked!”

Lothor tried to look as innocent as possible, but it seemed as though that only made him more guilty under the pressing glares of the armoured men around him. That's when he realised he only had a concealed dagger and was without his usual protection of full plate armour.

“You even a soldier, boy?” One of them queried.

“I think him a spy Lt” Another one piped in

This one was dressed differently to the others wearing only leather rather than the heavy mail the others wore. He also smelt a lot differently, a lot worse. He was smaller than the others too, but he seemed to have some influence at least as his voice portrayed an air of authority.

“Yeah he a spy, I can smell it, let’s kill em” He finally piped up.

Lothor was panicked with fear, but managed to scramble a defence.
“No, I am a friend I am no spy! Take me to Lord St. Alban there are people there to vouch for me. I am on your side!” He paused and realised they hadn't moved forward yet captured by the name Lord St. Alban, so he continued.

“Even if I weren't it disgusts me that my allies would harm a man with such poor odds!” He said sternly.

Decisions.............

Ulthok and Cor were escort by Ayroen to the home of the fortress commander, General Martin St Albans. Cor gathered the party member to deliver the news and offer of the King. The cleric had always spoke straight and he did not mince words now.

I have asked teh king a personal boon, to equip us with whatever items in the royal vault he can spare. What if anything that may be I nae can tell ya."
Ulthok looked over at Peri as she been engrossed in fresh fruit pie from the General kitchen. He knew they needed to talk, he could not make this decision for her.

Cor continued, "I will judge none a coward if ya take the reward and go hame. Ten of us set out at the beginning of this adventure and only three made it this far. The odds are stacked agin us pretty bad. Many, if nae all of us, will not likely return from this trip and the forces of evil arrayed agin us are such as ya have never seen. I donna want any rash answers so take some time ta think about it. Later tonight I will visit ya each individually and receive your answer."
The group remained silent as Cor excused himself and left the room.

Ulthok walked over to Peri, “I believe we need to talk…. Bring your pie and let us walk.”

(O.O.C. Assuming Peri flys up to Ulthok shoulder.)

Leaving the others, “Peri… we have just become friends and companions. I cannot drag you into the mission the King will assign, but I will be going with Cor. I don’t go to gain anything, but only to preserve that what now exists……. and to help perhaps the only friend I’ve ever really had. Peri, the dangers we will face are far beyond what I can feel I may survive…..I cannot hold you to our bond.”

Danger Is My Middle Name- Periwinkle Danger Thistledown...Or Something Like That

Peri uncurled herself from around Ulthok's shoulders. She must have fallen asleep during their journey. Turning her head to and fro, she surveyed her surroundings. The scales on her back bristled as she noticed some faces she was not familiar with seeing. She quickly looked at Ulthok and noticed him pleasantly at ease..... perhaps she should keep an eye out just in case something...her mind trailed off as her nose caught whiff of something sweet and buttery. A fresh fruit pie lay out to cool from the General Kitchen.... perhaps she could just take a bite. She nuzzled Ulthok's cheek softly and flew swiftly over to the buttery treasure. She eagerly consumed the treat as she steadily became engrossed in it, drowning out the rest of the talk around her.

Moments passed as she spied Ulthok walking toward hers her with a pensive look on his face. This cant be good. She quickly looked down at her half eaten pie, then back up at him. She licked the sides of her face and scales to rid them of the syrup that currently covered them.

“I believe we need to talk....Bring your pie and let us walk.” He whispered softly to her. Peri frowned slightly, yep.... not good. She clutched the rest of the pie in her claws and flew up to Ulthok's shoulder and nestled in waiting to hear what it was he meant to talk to her about.

After a few minutes of silence, he spoke to her. “Peri… we have just become friends and companions.

Peri's facial scales pinched into a frown. Was he really saying what she thought he was saying. It sounded like he wasn't giving her a choice in whether or not she could join him. Didn't she already say that she was ready for any adventure, and any problems? Figured with how she reacted wit the dwarf she would at least get more credit than that.... no matter that's not important right now. What was important was assuring him that she was not going anywhere.....especially if he wasn't sure on his survival..

“My dear Ulthok, do you honestly think I would turn back and abandon you now?” Her frown deepened as her usual bright purple eyes darkened with hurt. “I have no intention of leaving you... danger or not. I believe you have no authority to say what I can and can not do. I may be your companion, but I am far from controlled by your choices. Now... that being said, What adventure are we now going on? What can I do to help? “ Her frown twisted slightly into a smirk, but the same darkness echoed through her eyes as she refused to break eye contact with him. “Don't ever, and I do mean ever, think I am one to shy away from adventure and danger. Alright?” She smiled at him and kissed his cheek softly hoping that would ease away the many things coursing through his mind.

Wine, war and tricks

Valene listened carefully to all that was being said by Cor. She really had nowhere else to be. This might prove adventurous. She enjoyed being with Ulthok and the others, even if she did not know them well. They were really the only friends she had.

"Of course I would like to be part of your party. If it will help in a small way. She smiled and petted the tygr. I will do my best to help.

Busted... Kinda...

He glances over to Emily, seeing her adopt a formal tone and way of speaking, he adopts a formal pose, taking up a position to her right. He would then take a step forward and announce himself to the group.

"Greetings Warriors and travelers alike, My name is Eclipse Caine, of the Family Caine, known for their famed skills and trademark weapon, the Caine Katana..."

As he said the weapons name he taps the longer blade on his hip.

"... And friend of Madam Emily here."

He would take another step forward so he is one step before her. He would raise his arms slightly and give a gentle bow.

"Welcome to my friend's home, Ti's a pleasure to make the acquantance of all of you, including your rare creatures, the tiny dragon and the tygr. Please excuse my intrusion on your events, I came to seek her councel on personal matters, that seems to have overlapped into your arrival, and for that, forgive me."

He would take a step back and come to stand at Emily's side, with her taking half a foot lead over himself. He would await Emily to speak before making his next move.

Rayne

Taynes kept watchful as they rode throu the mic of refugees and soldiers and other war cano personnel. Because of her ranger training she knew well that the surrounding countryside whould have been pick clean of eever eatable floran a ffauna would be a long time in recoveirng once they had all gone. There was not possibility that much would be left and even that would eventually be used up. Woeod for fires, wagons, Siege engins, catapults, shield pikes. All would be cout down. She could more for the destruction but she knew that right now it supported all those who had come to face the DarkOne and the evil arrayed agaisnt of the Kigdoms of good. She vould morne buut did not. Right now it was needed time for healing the land would come later, if they won, If not it made no difference. If the dark One was victorieous the world would be changed in ways she did not even want to contemplate.
At one large tent they drew up and Vor was greeted genially by the Veneral. The Three survivining origingal members were whisked off to meet with the King. The rest were left behind. Raayneud ot like being left out. She had been with the group the longest of those who had not started with them for the forest to Drow Mountain therough the test and then afterwards in search of the sword. rayne clamped down of her disappointment. She had given up much to wuest with them to aid them on their periolous journey, EVen more so to stay with them and leave the Pegasuss riders. But she was not one to brood and tuen her attention back to what the Beneral was telling them.

When Ayeron appeared her heart leaped up to see him agian. She dared not asked him if Ariel was here as well. She had give Ariel up when she had chosen to remain with her companions. It had been as had of a shose as she ever had name in her life. He smaile for him did not fade though.

When Ayeron said the Ariel was heere and rayne could bo visit her. rayne heart skipped a bit. but she fought down the urge to reply right away. Could she face seeing Ariel anonly to leave her again. tayne did not know if she could do that so soon with the wound sof their parting still open and tender, berhaps seven still bleeding a bit. She would have to think about that before she accepted his kind invitation.

"Ayeron it is always a oleasure to see you. I did not expected that it would be so soon. is everything alright in Dhan'tara With the Queen and King? rayne askes the paladin, Pegasus Rider. I will wait for Cor to return first though. I will let you know whenI can visit Ariel with you permission of course.", she added more formally. After all Ariel was his mount now not hers.

Yes, the wound was still tender

Arriving at the residence they meet a daughter of the house and her friend as they dismounted and unpacked their horses.

Rayne hept Aeron with her. She did not trust letting him fly in the day wher he could be taken down by an aroow of crossbow bolt by someone who wanted meat of any sort. PErhaps tonight she would let him fly warming him to stay up gifh over any city or encampment, She would thing about it.

They were shown quarters and she checked her packs but did unot unpack them except to take out a clean set of clothes and set the others out to be cleaned. If there was not one to do it ishe would do it herself.

She went downstairs and waited for Cor and company to rettuen. When jhhe did they all gathered, well most of them gathered. He told them what they would be doing, that was if they agreed to it, if not they could have gold and titles form the king. That is not what Rayne had come here for.

"Lord Cor, I gave up the Pegasys Riders. forever," Rayne emphasised that word, "to remain with this company. I have not come this far just to take a King's offer if gold and titles for what we have already done. If so, I would have stayed in the Pegasus riders. I came to continue to fight the Dark One.. That is my answer. There are things I would like and if it is withing the King's ability to have them done then fine, but even without them I am going with you to whatever end this leads up too.

Rayneknew she had tensed a bit as well and Aeron knew it as his talons fripped the padded shoelders on her tunic.

"Now that you have my answer Is there anything else. Do you know what sort of things is the king is ffering? It had been long since I have been able to resupply, other than a few basic items. I do need new clothes arrowa, rations, I know these may be hard to get with so many here all needing much the came things.

Twyne ssat down and listened to others question sna replies. Furing that time she let her attention halft drifts to thoughts of Ariel and their time together. It would hurt but she could not deny that they whad been friends and friend s did not ignore each other just because they might tread different paths.

Later uif Ayeron is about she asked to go see Arile. Before going sheslips down to the kitchedn to begs an apple or carrot and s honey cake for feuit tart that she dtipps honey all over. Ariel had a horrible sweet tooth. She also asks for meat scrops for Aeron so that he would not have to go hunting. She ecplained all that he could eat and what he could not. She would thing albout letting him fly tonight if there were not evnough suitable scraps of fresh meat.

An almost forgotten post LOL

BACK POST
The four members of the party and Peri as they unpacked and prepared to find rooms were greeted to the sight of the two people attempting to escape without notice the manor house. With that having become impossible, the younger of the two introduced herself followed closely by her Elvin ‘friend’

"Greetings Warriors and travelers alike, my name is Eclipse Caine, of the Family Caine, known for their famed skills and trademark weapon, the Caine Katana and friend of Madam Emily here."
After a step forward and a gentle bow the Elf continued,

“Welcome to my friend's home, it’s a pleasure to make the acquaintance of all of you, including your rare creatures, the tiny dragon and the tygr. Please excuse my intrusion on your events, I came to seek her council on personal matters that seems to have overlapped into your arrival, and for that, forgive me."
After a quick round of greetings, Eclipse was on his way as Emily showed the party her home and rooms were assigned. Then Lothor left and the party waited for the return of Cor and Ulthok..........

THE RETURN OF BOTH
For Cor and Ulthok, it had been a very tense meeting with King Maridynn. However, the return to the rest of the party to tell them what the King had said was a trial in and of itself not knowing who would stay or go.
Of those waiting for the two’s return, Rayne, Valene, Sirene and the faerie dragon Peri, all accepted the King’s offer of employment. The only one not to accept of course was the fighter Lothor who as the night got later and later had yet to return......

MILITARY CAMP
“Yeah he a spy, I can smell it, let’s kill em”
“No, I am a friend, I am no spy! Take me to Lord St. Alban there are people there to vouch for me. I am on your side! Even if I weren't, it disgusts me that my allies would harm a man with such poor odds!” Lothor said sternly.

“Hate to tell ya bub, St Albans is the fort Commander not ours, we don’t answer’s to him”
The situation was looking grim for the party’s only fighter as the Lt’s men closed around him. Then as if sent from heaven, a patrol of five mounted men rode up, a captain of the fortress guards leading them.

“What’s going on here Lieutenant?”
The grunt Lt at once came to attention as did the rest of his men, the runt slower then the rest.

“This man was ah spying on the camp Captain we were just about to capture e’m and brings him to you.”
“No need we will take it from here”
As Lothor again tried to prove he was no spy he quickly found himself tied up and unarmed walking behind the captain’s horse, his dagger having been taken. Slowly they moved past the Southern gate and into the fortress once more............

the missing link

Cor heard as the others all pledged to continue to serve the king; not that he expected otherwise. Once all had given their word, he called all together again to break the good news that the party would remain together. "Seems we will be putting up with each other a bit longer. Now, if ya all will excuse me I have to go round up our wayward friend. Who knows what trouble he may have gotteninto on his own. See if ya can all manage to stay out of trouble until I get back".

Taking his leave, Cor went to the captain of the guard. "Well met captain. Seems one of my party wandered off. Though i could a'course find him alone, that might lead to a few split skulls and more work for ye. If ya would be so kind as to lend me 4 men at arms toa go with me i think this can be seen finished nice and quietly."

A laughing stock.

Lothors attempt at shaming the ill looking group of men had failed and the twelve of them fanned out in a semicircle, like a pack of wolves closing in on its helpless prey. Lothor was about to grab for his dagger when the sound of hoofbeats echoed in his ears. He turned his neck slowly, not wanting to show his back to his enemies. He could see five horsemen approaching and as his head turned back round he saw the twelve men stop and stand stiffly to attention. His fortunes had changed, for an instant at least. He thought to himself.

It was clear the horsemen were in authority here and quickly the twelve men were hurried away. Now Lothor was faced with less opponents but they all seemed better armed and, from what his eyes could tell, far better trained than his previous foes.

He was searched for weapons and much to Lothors dismay his dagger was found, now he stood no chance should his escort decide to become hostile. Swiftly he was trussed to the back of the captains horse and was marched back into the fortress. Lothor blushed with embarrassment as he was dragged through the camp. The soldiers on night duty sniggered and pointed at the muscular warrior, some even having the audacity to throw an apple or two at him on his way past.

He tried asking where they were taking him but the only answer he got was silence.

"Yes, Dear.........."

“My dear Ulthok, do you honestly think I would turn back and abandon you now…..I have no intention of leaving you... danger or not. …….I believe you have no authority to say what I can and cannot do. I may be your companion, but I am far from controlled by your choices. Now... that being said, What adventure are we now going on? What can I do to help? ………….Don't ever, and I do mean ever, think I am one to shy away from adventure and danger. Alright?”
Peri had soundly admonish Ulthok and then kissed him softly on the cheek to reduce the sting.

Chuckling lightly, “Yes, Dear…I hear you clearly!” The mage tilted his head to the small wonder on his shoulder.

“What have we been asked to do you ask? ……The King needs a group of the especially skilled to strike at the evil while it is still in chaos. Our mission will be spelled out when Cor reports back that we are ready. … We will know our mission in the morning. I have never heard of any magical item that might aid a Faerie Dragon, but if you know of one I’ll ask if one might be available for your use. Something for your protection would set my heart to greater ease. We can have Cor inquire for you.Let us return to the dinning room and see how the other are faring. In the morning we’ll see if we can gather a few tarts that we don’t need to make.”

Walking back through the quiet halls Ulthok hoped to find Valene and see if she might care enjoy what may be our last night in soft bed for a long time.

A warm bed and snuggles

As it got toward evening, Valene found Ulthok seeking her out. She smiled and giggled, gently kissing him as he led the way to their room. Once inside, she snuggled against him, making him a very happy halfling indeed.

Just before falling asleep, she pulled some berries she had requested from the kitchen and set them in a small bowl for Periwinkle. Smiling gently, Valene sets the bowl down and says, "These are for you. I do hope you will enjoy them."

Not knowing what dangers they would face, Valene spends a happy and peaceful night with Ulthok. The tygr, having been given some meat and water, settles peacefully on the floor on Valene's side of the bed. This was a good night to be with the one she cared most about.

Last post till next year :)

THE NEXT DAY
With all of the party and both familiars, having agreed in thier own way, to continue with Cor and join the service of King Maridynn the only question remaining where was Lothor?. Though Cor had given the ok for the fighter to do some investigating on his own he had yet to return to the manor house. With night overhead and all weary from the journey to the fort the party slept. However with no sign of Lothor that morning and no word from him Cor and the rest began to worry. By midday Lothor was almost fourteen hours overdo.

Deciding not to wait any longer and telling the rest of the party to stand fast and wait for his return Cor rounded up four of Alban’s troopers and set out to find the wayward fighter. Having no luck at first the Dwarf Knight Cleric decided to check the fortress stockade and found the human fighter behind bars. Though it was clear he had been there all night he did not look abused in anyway and was just finishing a plate of food. After a few minutes of identifying himself and Lothor as soldiers in service to King Maridynn of Shan‘Tara, and with Alban’s four troopers all known by the stockade guards, helping to prove the truth. Lothor was quickly released and the group of six was soon headed back to the manor house.

The rest of the week was the calmest time any of the new special strike force had known in at least a year and a half and for some longer then that. With Ulthok and Valene spending more and more time together it was clear to the party that the two halflings had developed a bond many of them could only hope for. Was it love or just the love of sex still was unclear, perhaps to both, but they always seemed to have a smile afterwards. On another note with Eclipse’s almost daily visits to Emily, he having finally met her father and gotten his ok, he and the party came to know themselves all quite well. Cor having witnessed the Elf Ranger’s prowess with sword and bow during his many training sessions with Emily was quite impressed. Knowing Eclipse was no longer attached to any unit offered him a spot within the parties ranks which the Elf gladly accepted.

However again good things tend to end and not always for the better for on the seventh day a thick cloud of smoke could be seen raising into the air. A quick mission of Pegasus and the source of it was revealed, the city of Athh Reed burned.. On the ninth day since the parties arrival in Craggian Core they were wrenched out of a pleasant day as multiple horns all over the fortress blared to life. Rushing to a place upon the Southern wall facing towards the lands of Atarinn the party along with a few hundred thousand soldiers watched as the first elements of the Dark Kings army arrived before the gates of Craggian Core.

As the defenders of the fortress watched the lead elements came into view. First of which moving at a slow controlled pace were eight thousand Orc’s mounted on Worgs. A group of one hundred crimson and black robed figures riding huge evil looking horses leading them. Behind them marched a double column of roughly thirty thousand Gnolls intermixed among them were thirty Fire Giants, one Giant it seemed per one thousand Gnolls. As the day wore on, many a call to take the fight to them while the enemy were small in number came from the walls.

These calls easily denied by the Kings and fortress Generals was proved to be the right call as more and more enemy units quickly arrived. These new elements, including a large force of ten thousand Flinds, larger, stronger cousins of the Gnolls. Next up were two hundred thousand Goblins, led by forty or so Mind Flayers. Clearly these Goblins were meant as an armed labor force as they quickly began the duty of creating defensive entrenchments beyond the range of ballista or spell.

With the fall of night the many campfires of this evil army were like a large lake of fire with rivers pouring in as more enemy troops arrived by the hour. A little past midnight this lake of fire was disturbed as suddenly among the pinpoints of light numerous larger flares of fire erupted. These bursts of fire though large and fierce were short lived vanishing quickly leaving only area's of darkness among the many pinpoints of light. With many a guard on the wall the rest of the night was quiet.

With the coming of the morning light all on the wall could see many large craters with Goblin bodies littered in them, slowly being dragged away by yet more of the short ugly folk. The craters causing the Goblin dug trenches to be erratic and not solid in construction causing more then one to collapse upon the enemy soldiers stationed in them

Over the course of this day the defenders of Craggian Core watched as Hobgoblins, Bugbears, Giants of all type, some pulling huge battering rams behind them. More Orcs, more Goblins, Ghouls, Zombies, and more of the undead raised by the same robed figures in crimson and black as had led the first Worg borne Orc‘s, now joined by a few hundred of their robed kin.

The course of the next few days was nothing more then a show of force as more and more creatures arrived to join the forces already camped to the front of Craggian Core. With the nights filled with fire and explosions from forces raiding into the enemy encampment in an attempt to slow the construction of the defenses, yet the enemy forces did not attack. Then on the morning fifth day of first contact the main host, numbering almost three million three hundred thousand strong finally made their appearance before the gates of Craggian Core. Even among the mass of such a large force of various evil it was not hard to miss the fifty siege towers moving forward each pulled by a set of two Formorian Giants. Then as if in a space of its own moved a large tent, upon a platform of wood carried on the backs of fifty Giant Trolls, a crossbreed of Troll and Hill Giant.

Upon the edge of this platform close to the tent’s entrance could be seen by all rested a red Dragon as if sleeping. The tent front of the tent for the moment closed. Within the next hour the tent was set up on it’s extended wooden legs with a set of steps leading from it to the ground. As if timed with the finish of the tent’s setup half of enemy towers moved forward in five groups, five rock throwing towers in each group. For the first time the enemy had come into range and the fortress ballista wasted no time in striking first only to watch as the rocks somehow deflected away. Then the enemy towers were within range and the first twenty five rocks were launched to strike at various positions upon the magic reinforced fortress walls.

The siege of Craggian Core had begin..................

Evil To The Core?

Party had been asked not to wander alone out of gates of Craggian Core and take care even inside the walls. Ulthok knew the peace would not last, for if the King needed another special team then things would change soon enough. As the days pasted the mage took the time to study the many spells he acquired when the team shared their spell books. Peri flitted about and constantly asked questions or nuzzled his cheek as she stole another treat from his pouch. The mage had also asked Valene to join them whenever she could. She was a free spirit and didn’t seem to judge him. They enjoyed the benefits of their relationship. Some days Ulthok went shopping to replenish his spells supplies.

Then came the day the skies darkened with the smoke of a far off fire. They soon heard that a nearby city had been burned. The peace was ending.

Two days later alarm horns sounded. Following the city guards the party found themselves on the south wall looking out over the Atarinn landscape. As they watched a huge army of all manner of fell beasts advanced on the city. Legion after legion of evil creatures cover the land for as far as they could see and kept coming. Peri sat on the Halfling’s shoulder. As he felt her wings fluttering nervously he reached up placing his hand to her face he turned his head and kissed her small scaly cheek. “It’s a good thing there are two of us now or that gathering might worry me.”
Over the next days they would visit the wall to see how the throng had grown. Sometimes Valene would join them. When they would leave and make their way back to their rooms the gloom followed them. Ulthok was glad to have these two to share his time, the future may indeed be darker and dire than they have ever seen.
