...and there will be no room for discontent, neither for despair.

The Town of Main
During the 10 days they were in town waiting on Conall to heal up completely, a feat that heconsidered a miracle, Kenji also got himself back to full health and learned what he could about his traveling companions and their mission

He sought out Ultholk, the group’s leader according to Haila, and asked him about their quest. He had deem if this mission was a just and honorable one. Though Kenji was a Ronin, a masterless Samurai, he still followed his own code of honor and the code of the bushido; he would not participate in a quest that would dishonor him or bring harm to helpless people.

He doubted that was the case for he felt nothing but a good natured sense of right about the ones he had joined and he doubted he would learn anything that would make him change his mind about going with them. Still he had to ask nonetheless.

(Backposting here later if needed.)

After listening to details of their quest, Kenji would accept these people as worthy companions and pledge to them his service to the cause. This oath was binding in a way, not as strong as a Samurai’s oath to his Daimyo (Lord) but strong enough to tell them that he would risk his life for the cause and in the defense of any person in the group.

The Trip upriver
Traveling by canoe suited Kenji just fine, he found it relaxing and he preferred it to riding horses. He did not own a horse anymore, back home he had owned several, but he found walking to be more pleasant than riding. The canoe trip being uneventful left plenty of time to talk to his companions and get a feel for their natures. He hoped by the time it was over to know them as well as he could after such a short trip.

(Backposting here as needed)

Unlike the trip before the party made good time and within a short two weeks on the eve of the 12th day after leaving Main they found themselves at the end of the river portion of their journey and in the shadow of a large mountain.

“That my friends” Althena spoke, pointing to the overlooking mountain “is where the sword lies, somewhere inside that place known only as Drow Mountain is hidden what we seek”

Kenji looked upon the mountain and wondered about this sword. Hard to imagine that a sword that only Althena could carry would corrupt anyone else who held it. Magic was strange to him, he used a few items he found useful, but they paled in comparison to ones he had heard of since coming to this land.

When they stopped an made their way on foot, Kenji would take up a position of rear guard, unless he was told otherwise by their leader, considering this a good place for him. With his speed he could quickly join any battle at the front and besides he had no real skill at finding trails through the brush.

After four days they came to the place where it looked like they must climb. He patrolled the area for signs of trouble and helped to gather wood for a fire as the campsite was selected and set up. Returning he would work on starting the fire, if no objections, and listen to what was said about their next move.

(OOC: I hope to backpost some here on the journey during this week.

Good luck and because of your great posting, I will let you know that from this point on things get harder for you, the enemies stronger with more numbers, and if you’re not careful, a characters death could very well be permenant.
Hmm.. Well it our reward for all our great posting is for you to make things more difficult and deadly, maybe we shouldn’t post so much! )

Backpost: Conversation with Connel

Cor visited Connel on a daily basis but mostly just to see that he was doing well. As expected, he was fine and well taken care of. After 7 days Cor managed to find a time to visit when Connel was alone.

"Good to see your leg is almost healed lad, t'was a nasty wound it was. But it is another wound I wish to speak to you about this day. It seems you have found a medicine that shows potential in treating the emotional wounds you bear. I want you to rememeber that such is not forbidden one of your Order and I believe Odin himself would be pleased to see you find peace and happiness. Embrace and enjoy it while you can for such is not guaranteed in this life and few fine a truely 'good' medicine."

Some then, some now

Conall was glad to see his friend every day, he also took great joy in knowing Cynil was close at his side. This second feeling of joy was something Conall had truly never felt before and had only seen it in the eyes of others. Those he had spent his whole life learning how to defend and then doing so.

In the last days of Conall’s stay on the bed of healing Cor came to him alone and the two spoke, "Good to see your leg is almost healed lad, t'was a nasty wound it was. But it is another wound I wish to speak to you about this day. It seems you have found a medicine that shows potential in treating the emotional wounds you bear. I want you to rememeber that such is not forbidden one of your Order and I believe Odin himself would be pleased to see you find peace and happiness. Embrace and enjoy it while you can for such is not guaranteed in this life and few fine a truly 'good' medicine."

Do not injustice to another,
Defend the weak and innocent
May truth and honor always guide you
Let courage find life within
Stand up when none are willing
Act not in hatred or in spite
Be to this world as a perfect knight
Even if it means your life.

Conall spoke these words and Cor who knew them well for he also lived by them, “Cor, this medicine you speak of, I have your blessing and I take it gladly but you my friend have take some wound I can not see. You are Cor the one who will teach me, the one who will always have my sword when you have need of it.” Conall looked at Cor with sorrow in his eyes, “When I find one to replace the one of my forefather’s that I seem to have lost in that cursed wood. That loose I feel pains me the most.” Conall then shook it off and continued, “Most of all you are a very good and dear friend to me. Now with my healing almost complete, I ask of you. What is this wound that I can not see that you have taken? And tell me not that you have no wound, for I who know you best of all can see that there is something, I see it in your eyes old friend, I can hear it in your steps.”

During travel

Conall spent as much time as he could on his leg. He would walk the camp sites as they all sat and spoke around the campfire. All seemed well for Conall on the river, it was when the group moved from the river to open land, sometimes his leg would give trouble but for the most part Conall kept that problem to himself.

Conall spent time with Cynil. Some times he would watch from afar other times he would sit or walk next to her. Sometime talking about the living things of this world for she knew much of that, other times he would just be close. He found something in him was awake. He for the first time in his life just enjoyed being. He wanted to let her know she was always welcome at his side and would hope that he would always be welcome by her side.
Conall also found that he was more concerned with the others in the group. They have ground more important to him. Not a group he would give his life for but a group that he would give anything for. The code he lived by told him to defend and honor but these people he would do so with or with out the code he chose to live by.

Cor heard the words of the Creed of the Knights of Odin once more. "Ther is naught in the code to preclude your new found companionship. Do not do her the injustice of shunning her affection. Defend her as you would others like her. Have the courage to walk a path you have not walked before. Think hard, have you ever heard of a 'perfect' knight who did not seek or enjoy the love of a lady?"

Cor sat a bit and saw Connel ponder his words. After a time he spoke again, "You ask what wound I have taken. Tis not a wound you can see. Death stood at your side during the battle in the woods; poison of a magic nature spread thru your body despite my efforts to heal and cure poison on you. I realized it would take an intervention by Odin himself to save your life." Cor smiled a wry smile for he saw he had Connel's full attention at the mention of Odin himself. "At the end of the day I prayer as usual but with a most unusual request. I asked to be granted the ability to cast a spell of such power that it was certainly beyond my normal ability. In exchange for this boon I offered my to forfeit my clerical abilities. Odin accepted my bid price and granted the single spell that saved your life. In the casting a bit of all of us flowed into you and you are truey bound to the group as much as they are bound to you. Since that time, I have not felt the warm that comes with contact with Odin; I am now simply a Knight of Odin. Odin did say he had designs of his own for me later and would modify my price at his whim. What he will choose to do and when is beyond my understanding. For now we are brothers in arms; Knights of Odin. Who out ranks whom at this point I have no idea." Cor sat and waited for what he had relayed to sink in. He knew Connel would have questions. "One last thing lad. You might be needing this, you shouldn't leave it laying around or you might lose it." Cor picked up an long bundle and unwrapped Connel's family sword.

Rayne

THE TOWN OF MAIN

The days of Conall healing passed quickly enough for the most part for Rayne. She went to see Conall each day bringing him information of the days event of the various members of the group., even the little daily bits and pieces and anything that was humorous including the owl wars between Arwen the the owl that had come to Haila with a message. “I seems that Haila’s father has passed away. He was her last parent living and she was deeply saddened by his passing and the fact that she could not be there with him when he dies. She told him about the Stranger that had help Cor against the tree men.

Daily Rayne took walks out into the forest with Arwen to keep him happy she invited Haila to go with her and at other times Cynil. For Haila Rayne hoped the visits to the forest would take her mind off her father’s passing and give her something to do. Rayne did some hunting and fishing had the inn smoke some meat for the trail. Cynil she asked because she knew the Druidess would appreciate the forest time as much as Rayne did. She foraged for fruits nuts and berries, and onions and garlic and other root vegetables. The root vegetables would keep but she had had the fruits dried as well. These daily excursion gave her a break from being cooped up in town even as small as it was.

On one of the first days they were there she commissioned a boot maker to make a pair of soft boots for herself. The hard soled ridding boots were not the best for walking in the forest or getting into the canoes. She had all her clothes washed and mended to get ready for their departure. She made sure Conall’s were done too. Each evening she was at the inn and shared dinner and a pint of whatever was best with the others. She talked some with Kenji. Not prying but rather sharing her experiences with him and shaoing for his experiences in exchange. Of course she asked about the forests and animals of his home for those were her interests.

THE TRIP UP RIVER CONTINUES

Unlike the trip before the party made good time and within a short two weeks, on the eve of the 12th day after leaving Main, they found themselves at the end of the river portion of their journey and in the shadow of a large mountain. Rayne could not help but enjoy some moments on the river. Out here in nearly virgin forest without the sign of any others except th party she was with she felt comfortable. She had no sense of wrongness about this part of the forest. She was glad that Arwen was back but missed Ariel and the rest of her companions. She sent him flying each day to be her eyes-in-the-sky, keeping him the effective area of her telepathic link

When they beached the canoes she made certain to careful hide them in living vegetation but pulling plant apart they then back over the canoes so that dead and dying vegetation would not vie away their locations. She would set up a variety of traps about the camp that would trap the unwary.

Cynil

Cynil, continued to spend time with Conall, not as a lover but as a deep friend, though her love shown in her being and in how she treated him. Not for him to be coddled or pampered, in fact she made him exercise and work his body even to his growning limb. Most of the time she made it so that he would have to extend himself to reach things. One day, when his leg was almost fully regrown she tickled his new foot to get him to feel and react with it.

She also sent time with Rayne, reveling in the forest that surrounded Main. It was then that she told the Ranger of her quest for a companion. She had narrowed it down to two, a wolf or a big cat, though if she found an elven forest she would try for a Coo Shee or a Cath Shee.

She spend sometime gathering herbs and spices until one day she was tasting some pepper and sneezed and went on sneezing and coughing and almost blinded by her reaction to the pepper. Then she got an idea and bought up all the pepper she could find, had it ground into the finest powder and then bought some thin paper. She sent the rest of the day making pepper bombs, taking some pepper and a piece of jagged rock and tying them in a paper bundle. They could be thrown, or she could even use her sling. She even made some smaller ones without rocks to hook to arrows.

Cynil also brought more practical clothes for climbing in the mountains. She chose them in gray and the bought some pine green and brown die. Next she took her new clother and splashed water on them and let it soak in for a bit. Finally she splashed the green and brown dyes about on the gray clothers. Where the material was died the green and brown were more intense and created shraper lines and more intensely colored spots and splatters, where the material was wet the colors bleed and were diluted by the water softening them, and when the green and brown mixed a more neutral was creted. Then she let the clothes dry, When she was done she had created a camouflage effect to help her to better hide.

Traveling

Once on their way she shared her new weapon with the others, and offered the archers of the group a couple of the small pepper bombs to use with an arrow. She was happier than she had been in a long time, it was as if she had become whole. Not once did she act like some love struck child, but her love was there for all to see and feel. When she prayed to Juro, she added a second prayer to Odin for his gift.

(Backposting to Rayne’s conversation with Kenji)

Rayne would find that Kenji was a great listener and he didn’t seem to tire or get bored at any stories she was willing to relate to him. He would sit quietly and nod and offer comments as they came to him. It was harder though to get him to talk about himself or his homeland. It wasn’t that he was hiding anything, it just seemed that he was not accustomed to talking about himself to anyone.

He explained that in his homeland, The Bushido Islands, people did not willing share personal things with others unless they were close friends and sometimes that could take years. He had found that people here on the mainland struck up friendships much quicker than his prior experience.

She did manage to get him to open up a bit, maybe he felt obligated since she had shared some of her past experiences. Kenji spoke of his home and how beautiful and serene it could be when there was no war going on. How there were many exotic plants whose descriptions were unrecognizable to her. There were even some animals that sounded so beautiful and graceful in his portrayal that they sounded wonderful.

She heard about his land, how it was often ravaged by war between the many different Daimyos (Lords) who use their military might to take what they wanted. He spoke of how Samurai, like himself, served the various lords and fought not only in the wars but to help control the lands and maintain order.

She might get the impression as he talked that Kenji didn’t care for the things he had to do in the service of his lord and when he spoke of how he defied his lord when he was ordered to kill an entire village of peasants without just cause she would know that was the reason he had left and came here to the mainland. He told her that he had fled the lord’s service and sought to stop the slaughter of innocents but he was only one man against many other Samurai who followed the lord.

Because of his betrayal, his wife and child had been murdered by the Lord before Kenji could get to them. Kenji sought vengeance by challenging the Lord and defeating him in combat and killing him. Yet because of this he had to flee the land or face the vengeance of the Lord’s son who took his father’s place. If he ever goes home he will face a most horrible death.

After telling her this story, he rose and retired to bed wishing her a good nights rest.

The way ahead

Cor looked at the mountain rising before him. It was not a magestic mountain but rather it seemed that dispair oozed from its very rocks. Seeing no apparent path he knew the climb would be a difficult one at best. "Seems that we will be breaking trail on this leg of our journey. Perhaps one of you shape shifting types could do a bit of scouting to see if there is an appreciable differance in the various faces of that rock. T'would be nice to at least climb the least difficult one; not that I think any will be easy. Perhaps it is best to set camp here til daybreak and then send out our search team." Cor dropped his pack and began to set his sleeping area as usual. As he did, he offered a silent prayer to Odin to watch over the party and grant keen sight to those who would search for a path on the morrow. Once more he felt nothing in return from his god.

A walk of sorrow....

Rayne had been supportive since her father passed away. Inviting her on walks with her through the forest. She had accepted, but didn't say much. Haila was grateful for the company, but wasn't enthusiastic in talking. Occasionally she would say a few words, but for the most part, she barely spoke beyond idle conversation.

Haila trailed her companions on their way from the town. Biting her lip slightly she sighed some as they trekked for days along the river, until Althena had informed them about the sword at "Drow Mountain". Haila seemed only half present with her companions. She seemed to be more interested in their surroundings, and her thoughts.

The canoes placed on shore and hidden to be used upon their return the party took to their beds to rest for the long walk ahead. With the raising sun just appearing on the horizon it found the party packed and already on the move towards the sword’s hiding place having woken early. The next four days were uneventful, as the area appeared to be so full of life, trees healthy, wild life running free, fresh water and plants in abundance. Yet for all that, it still had an empty feel as if something watched and waited for the party, something not at all friendly, yet no enemies or any form of danger appeared.

She could feel it in her being, that they were being watched, or that some strange presence was keeping track of the party and their adventure. Perhaps a sorcerer of some sorts was watching them through a crystal, or maybe a wizard was having a vision of their scouting towards their destination.

Kenji was also at the back, but he was guarding from the back. Haila kept near enough to him that he would think she was simply offering her help to guard the rear, but she didn't speak, didn't even look at anyone at all. The woman's surroundings seemed to be more appealing at the moment than anything else placed in front of her. Her hand rested instinctively upon the hilt of her short sword as she walked half-lost in thought.

With the end of the fourth day, the party found themselves at the mountains base the choice before them now to choose which face they would climb to reach its top as no path was in sight. With a campsite created out of the brush, it was time for the party to decide what next to do.

Sheltered by the brush, she sat in solitude trying to figure out the feelings she had that were eating away at her inside and out. Her gaze continuously shifting yet she hadn't said much since the news of her father's death. As of that moment, she had become an orphan. The thoughts had drifted from her mind during the mission, but in such times as this, when they weren't physically doing anything, the thoughts had crawled back gnawing at her conscience. Solitude allowed her thoughts to fly through her mind, and get sorted in importance, the entire time scanning their surroundings.

Demons among us?...

(Short Backpost to Rayne in Town)

Rayne nods to the man as he rises. She had listened carefully to what he said and also what was unsaid. As she bids him good noght. She stands and offers, "A man is known as much by his inactions as his actions. We are responsible for what we do but the most important person we be responsible to is ourselves. Loss of loved ones is painful; loss of oneself is catastrophic."
Kenji paused as she spoke and looked at her, he didn’t say anything for a long moment then he bowed his head deeply to her as if acknowledging the wisdom of her words. He turned and proceeded on to bed.

Current – Camp
Kenji was no mountain man but he had seen and climbed several when the need arose and right now it looked like they would be climbing. He looked up at the rockface from a distance trying to spot the easier path to climb.

“Perhaps one of you shape shifting types could do a bit of scouting to see if there is an appreciable differance in the various faces of that rock. T'would be nice to at least climb the least difficult one; not that I think any will be easy.” Cor said.
Kenji turned to look up the group with a raised eyebrow, Shape Shifting?, he thought. He had heard of such things but in his land it was known to be the powers of evil which took other forms. He looked around and took a step back and his hands went unconsciously to the handle of his Katana.

“Shape shifting is the work of demons,” he muttered but loud enough that anyone nearby would probably overhear.

Easy there my new friend

Cor saw Kenji's hand slip to his sword and heard him mutter somehting about demons when he mentioned shape shifting. "Easy there Kenji, I did not mean to alarm you. Tis simple wizardly or druid spells I inquire about when I mention shape shifting. There are no demons here in this group. I expect if you trvel with us longer you will certailny have a chance to see demons but I hope it is not on this day." Cor gave Kenji a puzzled look, "Do you not have mages or druids in your homeland?"

Patience...

Haila listened attentively to all that was being said, and didn't seem the least bit startled when Kenji reached for his katana. A smile formed on her lips as she watched him, and having faintly heard his words she laughed ever so softly to herself. She could clearly recall every detail of the man she had learned since their arrival. Women, in his eyes, were inferior to men. Haila knew this form the start, but that night in the bar, had confirmed her suspicions.

Cynil

Cynil looks up to the forboding mountain, thers is something about it that bothers her, but she can not place what it is.

When mention is made of shape changing she volunteers.

"I can turn into a mountain goat, that way I will seem natural to any watchers, and it will give me the ability to move about quickly searching for the best path."

Uncomfortable...

Cor saw Kenji's hand slip to his sword and heard him mutter somehting about demons when he mentioned shape shifting. "Easy there Kenji, I did not mean to alarm you. Cor gave Kenji a puzzled look, "Do you not have mages or druids in your homeland?"
Kenji relaxed at Cor’s urgings, he didn’t sense any deceit in his words and he had come to trust Cor since their battle together to save Conall. His hands came away from his sword but he still showed his uneasiness at the situation.

“There are those who use magic among my people,” he said slowly as if thinking back to that time, “there was a ‘mage’ who worked for my Daimyo… but he didn’t have the ability to change into other beings or animals. Such magic was considered only suitable for those who used the ‘dark arts’.”

Kenji turned to look at her, again the eyebrow raised at her mention of turning herself into a goat. He definitely seemed uncomfortable with the idea of people changing into anything other than humanoid forms.

“I think I will see if there is any game about to he had,” he turned and going to his belongings picked up his 6’ Daikyu bow and quiver of arrows and headed off into the surrounding forest to look for game. He kept his eyes open for any traps that others in the party might have set to catch the unwary.
