o ‘Anguish’ - (Shortsword of backstabbing +2): In the hands of any character this is a +2 magical weapon, but in the hands of athief it is especially potent. When a thief makes a backstab attempt with this short sword, it allows him to attack as if four levels higher than his actual experience level, with corresponding improvements in THAC0, attack rolls, and damage multiplier on a successful hit. + False Scabbard – The scabbard in which Spider carries ‘Anguish’ is a stout piece of craftsmanship that is slightly longer than the blade for which it was crafted. This element of the design leaves a length of scabbard at the end which is a separate, hollow compartment. This is accessed via a sliding panel at the end of the scabbard and has been used to conceal any number of things from blinding powders and dog pepper to gemstones and other small ‘prizes’. (The Complete Thief’s Handbook) Usually attached to harness, either on back or at hip. (
o Dagger of Venom – This appears to be standard dagger +1 but its hilt holds a hidden store of poison. Any hit on a roll of 20 injects fatal poison into the opponent unless a saving throw vs poison is successful. The dagger of venom holds up to six doses of poison. If the hilt contains fewer than six doses, the owner can pour more in up to the maximum. (Use of this weapon by good characters must be carefully monitored for effects on alignment… Spider’s never actually used it since it’s been in his possession and likely wouldn’t except in extreme cases but he does always have this item on him.)

o ‘Shadow Chain’ (Silenced Elfin Chain) – Spider often wears a special form of silenced elfin chain (which he often refers to as Shadowchain). This armor has each individual link of chain wrapped in thin leather or light cloth binding. This to some extent ‘silences’ the armor at the cost of increasing it’s encumbrance by one-third above that of normal elfin chain. It’s also fiendishly expensive, costing more than plate mail. Of course, it is even rarer than ordinary elfin chain itself. Finding a craftsman and persuading him to craft such armor could be quite a challenging adventure for a thief… and it was. o Housebreaker’s Harness (25gp)– Known in thieves’ cant as a “spider,” this harness is made of linked leather straps (one around each thigh, one around the waist, and one over each shoulder) which link together and forma a tight harness which can be worn over clothing or armor (up to leather or elfin chain). Attached to the harness are 8 or so more straps of varying lengths (up to 2 feet). At the ends of these straps are small, metal rings upon which many different devices/items may be affixed: tools can be hung, climbing daggers fixed, etc. The principal uses are as follows:
+ If climbing a wall using a rope, the rope can be run trough one or more of the rings of the harness, removing any chance of falling due to letting go of the rope
+ Once the thief has reached the point where he hopes to affect a break-in, two of the straps can be fixed to either side of him (with climbing daggers, wedges in the window frame, etc). This provides the thief with a firm base and allows him free use of his hands to open locks, cut glass, check for traps, etc.

o Cloak of Arachnida – This black garment gives the wearer the ability to climb as if a spider climb spell had been placed on him. When detect magic is cast, the cloak radiates a strong aura of alteration magic. In addition to the wall climbing ability, the cloak grants the wearer immunity to entrapments by webs of any sort – the wearer can actually move in webs, at a rate equal to that of the spider that created the web, or at a base movement rate of 6 in other cases. Once per day the wearer of this cloak can cast a double sized web (This operates like the 2nd level wizard spell). Finally, the wearer is less subject to the poison of arachnids; he gains a +2 bonus to all saving throws vs. such poisons.

Background:
Only son of Master Sighere Demeer and Lady Shanntara Bladesinger. His lot is life was pre-determined when the ill-fated pair fell in love. For it was Sighere who found Shanntara near death at the edge of the woods near the Elven city of Kilgrave. The Elven ranger/mage took pity on the young lady and took her in and nursed her back to health. It was an odd match in personalities, he an Elven woodsman and craftman and she a Human bard, a master dancer, singer and bladewoman. Many Elves challenged Sighere's decision to bring this woman into their city, but they too fell in love with her charming voice. Young Jhaven was bought up in the Elven city with a yearning for knowledge and adventure brought to him from his bedtime stories told by his mother.

He spent his early years as a apprentice to both his parents, learning the ways of a master jeweler, magic practicioner and swordsman. Much to his father’s surprise, he also learned from his mother many of the rogues arts as well. To this ends the story must dwell, for it was such practices that caused young Jhaven’s exile from the only home he had known… Eager to please his mother and demonstrate his growing mastery and cunning, he was accused of the theft a prized family heirloom belonging to the Elven princess. His father could not believe the accusations and called the accuser a liar, for which he received a brutal slash across his face. Seeing her true-love under attack, Shanntara quickly drew her sword and defended her husband.

The duel between Shanntara and her son’s accuser lasted for many minutes, for she did not wish to truly harm her opponent. She continued to talk to him, pleading for him to see reason and allow her to prove her son’s innocence without the need for further bloodshed. It was at this moment that she allowed her defenses to drop, showing her foe that she did not wish to continue the fight. Instead he took advantage of this and thrust forward mortally wounding her. Seeing this Jhaven rushed forward to his mother’s aid and turned his back on the coming blow from behind. His father already seeing his wife lying on the ground in a pool of her own blood could take no more… for he summoned his magical powers and used a spell long forgotten by many of his own kind. The tormentor fell to the ground in agony, darkness and fire all around. His rage apparent, Sighere was not to be calmed easily and action begot re-action as those in witness feared for their lives.

Not knowing what had transpired, the Elven Knights who responded to the scene slew Sighere before his son or anyone could utter a word of explanation. Thus did Jhaven loose both of his parents in a single day and still accused of a theft he did not commit. Determined to prove that his parents were correct, he fled the scene with the memory of his mother’s words still in his head, “Forgive them as I have, find the real thief and prove your innocence… in the chest at home is a gift meant for you next birthday from your father and I… tis now time that you have it.” With tears in his eyes, Jhaven found the birthday gift and a letter, the gleaming long sword and dagger he quickly grabbed and the letter he stashed away, still to this day not able to open it.

From that moment forward Jhaven sought to prove his own innocence and vindicate his parents... He still searches today… Along the many roads travelled since leaving the Elven City, he has met and befriended Vaskar Steelsong, a fellow practicioner of the "arts" in his own rights. Thus have his travels unexpectedly bought him to Thyatis City.
