Subject: Nobody saw that ...

Dai was looking directly at Miran when his face twisted into a silent plea for aid in picking up Ocyari's unconcious and limp form. She was so lax that, although he tried multiple times to pick the girl up to cradle-carry her, she flowed from his arms like water. Dai nodded and bent again to aid him in lifting the girl -- the princess? She still had trouble with that claim -- so she could be carried back to the orphanage.

Paomallen had made what seemed to be a statement of fact to Percifeer, alluding to an agreement of some sort but, as yet, making no decision. Looking between the two, she stated simply, "We must go! The longer we hesitate, the more danger she will be in, I think."

Dai was as surprised as the rest of the party. The vampires response to their attacks and their exclamation of non-agression was out of the ordinary, to say the least. But their gestures of servitude, respect, and honor to the young girl was astonishing!

She noticed that Miran was battling a confused loss for words and, after her surprised query to Ocyari, Dai herself was -- well, not speechless, but every bit as confused as Miran.

Ocyari stuttered, shaking her head. "N-No way... "It's... not possible... It... it's..."

"You are certainly a child full of surpr - ..."

Dai stops as Ocyari drops to the ground like a soft-sided sack. For a brief few seconds before her collapse, confusion, disbelief, and exhaustion all vied for control of her facial features. Dai dropped to her knees to first place her hand near the girls mouth to check for breath. Then she moved the hand again to place two fingers on Ocyari's temple to check for heartbeat.

[ making assumptions here, please advise if incorrect ]

Looking up at the others, she says,"She breathes and her heart also functions. Based upon the surprise I myself have at the statments I just heard from our two worshippers of the girl, I believe she fainted. Briefly, my thoughts are these: I intend to clear Ormander, first and foremost. Ocyari should go with us, and we can deal with the issue of the girl and these other two at a later time. Do what needs to be done to get us under way again. There is no time now to say more."

Paomallen halted at the motion of the vampire in front of the party just after the voice behind them addressed Ocyari. Miran drew steel and then cast a pair of magical darts at the creature behind them . In front, Paomallen called upon his diety to smite the creature that had halted their passage. Dai caught a faint hint of a cacophonous sound blast assaulting that creature, who paused only briefly, then took a few more steps and stopped entirely.

Uncertain as to which direction contained the greater threat, Dai turned sidways between the two fanged ones, standing with staff at the ready near Ocyari, who had escaped her captor.

Then Dai heard Perdifeer taunt the one at the rear of the party, asking if it liked birds. The creature exclaimed -- almost apologetically -- that it meant no harm, and bowed! Bowed before Ocyari and called her Princess!

"Princess, young one?" Dai looked quizzically at Ocyari.

It didn't take very long for the others to exit the tavern after Dai and Ocyari followed Paomallen out. The alleystreet was seemingly deserted at this late hour, but Dai was taking nothing for granted. The lack of visible danger put her somewhat at ease with regard to the young girl's safety, but not totally so. She did not like this area any better than she liked the clientele at the establishment they had just exited, which is to say not at all. The whole area reeked of danger, subtle and otherwise ...

Dai listened to Paomallen and nodded. She was not tired at the moment, but knew she could not be far from fatigue, for it had been a long day for her, as well. But she had a question:

"Rest is the advice I myself would give, if asked, and so I agree with Paomallen. While I have not made arrangements for lodging as yet, I will rest where the rest of you are, or will be, even if that's at the orphanage. We need to speak on this before resting, though, and a quiet room is much to be desired for a secure meeting, however brief. Ocyari? Will you go back to Ormander, or stay with the rest of us?"

Listening carefully to the conversation between Paomallen and Stuart, Dai was relieved that Stuart chose to ignore the quiet belligerence she herself detected in the words of her new companion. After that he offered a "deal of exchange" They would deliver something for Stuart, and then return here with whatever payment that delvery garnered, to exchange that for the information they sought.

While it was highly likely that the delivery-and-return would not be as simple as Stuart made it seem, there was really no indication to the contrary. Paomallen accepted the deal matter-of-factly, pouching the small bag given him by Stuart to deliver to SatyrMarket 53, Dai noted.

As Paomallen turned, he paused. Keeping with the follower-role, she stepped to one side to clear a path for him to leave, never taking her eyes off those at the table. Almost abstractedly, she motioned for Miran and young Ocyari to follow Paomallen before she herself turned to follow them in turn.

At the table, Paomallen stated that he would stay no longer but would tell the others what had transpired when they were out ot this place. Then he strode out, purposfully and without a backward glance. Puzzled at this, Dai looked at the others for a few seconds to geht their reactions before stating, "He has to know that it is not wise to divide the group here and now, but I will follow him out to see if I can keep him in the area until the rest of you accompany us. What he has to tell you may be of interest ..."

She turned and moved for the door, her speed surprising for one so small. She seemed to be in a genuine hurry to catch Paomallen before he got too far away.

Outside, when she catches up to Paomallen, she asks, "Are you going to wait for the others? It is not wise to split up at this point, in this place."

The laughter at Paomallen's first words didn't last long. Dai Lung felt that it only subsided because it didn't seem to have the desired effect. The cowled man evidently didn't like to be called 'virgin'. A thing to note and remember, she thought. The he offered Paomallen a choice of a 'knife to the throat, or the palm of a hand'. How did the man mean by that? Dai would not ask, for Pao was the speaker in this act of the play. She was in a supporting role and would play that to the very end, for now..

Dai kept her face carefully neutral, but inwardly winced at Paomallen's wording to the man. He spoke with calm deliberation, but there still seemed to be a hint of challenge or quiet belligerence to his phrasing. Maybe he was carefully crafting his delivery, but Dai was no wordsmith, nor was she any kind of negotiator to be able to determine that. But it was done. When Paomallen had stopped at the table, so had she. He had not moved, and she would not move or change her stance until he did so. She knew to show strength and solidarity, but not belligerence or intimidation. She could and would do the former to the best of her ability. The latter would be added when needed.

Subject: She follows

As Paomallen stood and picked up the glass, he stated that he was "going to do this, alone or otherwise". Dai was surprised yet again. Paomallen was never what one would call "assertive" or "bullish". At least he wasn't when she was -- --- umm, at the orphanage. But the tone of decision in his voice and his unhesitating movement after that statement was both illuminating and interesting to Dai.

Glancing at the others to see or hear what they had in mind, she detected no immediate reaction to Pao's decisive statement. So, as he passed her, she stood and pivoted on the ball of one foot to fall in behind him and slightly to the left. She still had her staff in the Mouth of the Serpent, carried vertically in her left hand and just an inch off the floor. With both weapon and stance to the same side of him, there was little chance that either of the two of them would interfer with the other's use of their respective weapons. She also affected an exaggerated swagger as she followed Paomallen, quietly "playing at" the bully/bodyguard.

When they arrived at the table and Pao placed the drink on the table, she remained behind and left of him, as if a lackey or hireling, not an equal. But she tilted her staff to be at a forward angle, still keeping it off the floor.

After, his initial query as to who owned the name he sought, Paomallen's delivery was impressively short, givng nothing away. But neither did he ask for, or demand, anything. He seemed to be stating a fact, mutually known to himself and the other. Then he "left the arrow in the other's bow", so to speak, and waited quietly for a response. And so did Dai wait, also, with a blank face and eyes straight forward.

Dai was kind of shocked at Pao's revelation that a good number of the patrons here were either undead or minions of them. It limited her options if combat broke out, but by no means shackled her. And she figured that it would break out. She could not afford to se unarmed strikes for fear of pushing a leg or arm to them to infect -- or worse. And the party -- including herself -- were not the typical sort that were "regulars" here. Spontaneous bouts of arguments, fisticuffs, and outright brawls often burst the bonds of quiet courtesy, and if all the patrons were inclined to get involved, erupting suddenly into the street.

She had no idea of what Percifeer had found out at the bar, and when she same back she betrayed nothing to anyone else, still keeping up the act of the "tipsy" one. Then the bartender came with a drink and told her to "deliver it herself", pointing to another table in a darkened area of the main room. Dai saw this as an attempt to control the situatiion by whoever was supposed to receive the drink The bartender had now shown this unknown party who, how many, and where they were. That information was not received in a fair exchange, and Dai suspected that this was the usual method of dealing with this person.

While she expected a fight -- and, as yet, she knew not why she did -- she hoped that it would be relatively minor and quick. Her hitherto-relaxed grip on her staff slowly became the Mouth of the Serpent, a grip attuned to the weapon, allowing it to be shifted quickly for different modes of attack.

Subject: No, sorry

"I'm sure we'd all be overjoyed to have more help from a fellow orphan. ... As the girls say, the more the merrier ... "

Although it was by no means unanimous, after three indications of acceptance, Dai glanced about for a stool and, locating one, siezed it and pulled it with her to the table. When she sat on the stool she straddled the stool, keeping the balls of both feet planted firmly on the floor on either side, ready at a moment's notice to spring up.

Leaning her forearms on the table, she leaned forward at Pao's assessment of the "make-up" of the clients in the place, and glanced about. "It makes sense. I have spent for a few drinks hoping to loosen some tongues, but very seldom has anyone ordered the alcoholic sort. And Pao? It surprises me not that you don't remember me. I was only six when I left the orphanage. Why or how would I have come to be noticed by you?.But I knew you. At least then. Not so much, now "

Since you've been here longer, do you think you could identify a person whom we think may have information about the theft?."

To Miran's query, she replies, "No, Miran, I am sorry. The information given me that led me to this place only mentioned that what I sought might be found here. Whether that refers to all of you, or to someone or something else, I have no idea. Either way, our meeting is both fated and opportune, as I see it. The most recent man that has entered is most curious to me. He seems to be celebrating something of note, but only he seems to know, or care what that is ... " She turns a quick glance to the dark-cloaked man, then faces the others again.

She frowns a bit, noticing Percifeer's amorous pawing at Miran. "Is Percifeer often in this condition, or has she been celebrating? Or mourning? She looks pretty happy, so I doubt the latter. It is interesting that you two have paired. I couldn't have imagined it years ago."

Subject: A small packge wrapped in orange and tied with black ribbons ...

She had been asking questions, meandering about the common room buying drinks and listening to various conversations. She had begun to believe that the lead she had followed was another "weak" one when she saw a group enter. She squinted a bit to look through the smoke and rank odorous air at them. A couple of them looked familiar, but she was uncertain until she saw Paomallen. He whom she had a crush on during her short time at the orphanage. She was well beyond that now, but his ever-familiar face, as if seen again through the eyes of the child she used to be, had not seemed to age a day. And it was now almost twenty years since she had left for the Temple. When she recognized Pao, she knew that the others with him were the group that had answered Ormander's call before she had arrived. Which meant that she may be in the right place after all.

All but Pao seemed younger than Dai was. One man in black might be Miran, and one of the women reminded her of an older Percifeer. Both were younger than Dai -- or Teresa, as she was known when she was at the orphanage. Until she left, she memorized and kept track of the roster of children there, but didn't interact with many of them. The one she saw as Miran she only ever knew from a distance. Dai had identified with Percifeer's dark hair, so like her own, but Dai had never thought of trying to get a friendship started because she was so much younger than Dai-as-Teresa. Twenty years may not have any effect on some people's memory, but can do a lot of "damage" to youthful features. Paomallen might, just might, recognize her, but she was sure the others wouldn't. Regardless of the span of time, their familiarity with her (or lack of it), and her removal from their lives, she still considered them family.

When they settled in one place, gathering chairs and stools to sit upon, she moved in their direction. Immediately noticeable was the fact that, although human, she was more than a few inches short of five feet tall. Although obviously older than the child with you, she was not much taller. The colors she wore were also quite remarkable, for the cloth of her garments are the bright orange of the morning sun and they were bound at the extremities and joints with soft, black leather bands or black sashes of cotton. A wide black sash encircled her slim waist. She wore a belt pouch slung from one one shoulder, and a sack tied with loop of hemp rope slung from the other shoulder. In one hand was a staff. Tucked into her waist-sash, at the small of her back and out of sight at the moment, were a pair of nunchakus. Bound to the outside of each lower-leg was a sheath, each holding a siangham.

As she approached the table, she was obviously and unabashedly assessing the group. When she arrived, she spoke over the din of the other 'guests' in the room behind her, "Please excuse. You are Paomallen, are you not? Of the orphanage run by Ormander Galios? If you are, then all of you are from the same background as myself, and I am in the right place. Are you Percifeer? And is that you Miran? You two were mere babes when I left the orphanage. I was called Teresa then. Teresa Lofton. My name now is Dai Lung [she pronounces this die-loong]. From what I've been told, a few of your number seem to be missing. Mandy told me that Pio had gone with you, but he isn't with you now. And there was another name Mandy mentioned, one I can't remember now, that also seems to be absent. "

[[OOC:: If the party allows her to continue, she does so after taking a deep breath. If they attempt to interject questions, Dai will hold out both hands to indicate to them to pause and says "Please. I must finish.." ]]

"I assume you had to take a test to enter here, as did I. My own test was a test of strength. The guy over there in the corner. The one rubbing his leg with both hands? He was my test. I was supposed to get him to release me after he picked me up. I simply didn't allow him to pick me up. A well-placed knee to the correct point in a leg muscle, near but not in the groin, will cause most to drop like a wet sack, as he did. As a result, I'm being left pretty much to myself." She speaks of this matter-of-factly, even though the man she points to seems nearly twice her height and mass.

At this point, Dai's speech becomes even more rapid, as if she was suddenly in a hurrry. Or she may have been sensing impatience and trying to shorten her diatribe. Or it could be just gushing relief at seeing long-missed "family" ...

"Actually, I was surprised -- no, I was amazed! -- that Ormander's missive asking for aid found me at all. In the cloistered seclusion of the Temple of the Cloud, I received no mail,, no messages other than those from the monks of the monastery. And I was there at the monastery simply because Ormander, or 'Mandy' as I still think of him from my own short time at the orphanage, Mandy allowed me to choose my life and do it at the tender age of six years. I have never regretted my persistence or my decision to pester Mandy into letting me try to follow my dream. I have always intended to visit him someday, to show him what I have made of myself."

"Unfortunately, I was only able to make the time to see him after I had left the monastery to "find my place". The message found me only 5 days ago, only one day after I left the monastery. The shock of the missive finding me goaded me into making all haste to the orphanage, where I had arrived at mid-day today. My shock was replaced by anger at the accusations against him, when I was informed of the events by Ormander."

"Then frustration took over, because I did not arrive soon enough to join the other members of my "family" on their quest to clear him. Ormander told me to stay close, if I could, and he would inform mer if you needed aid or replacements. At that time, she kept my own counsel, purposely not telling Ormander that I had no intention of waiting idly until called.. I intended to investigate on my own. More than a few coins had to be passed and palmed until I was able to follow a promising lead here, to the Heart of Darkness. Although I've been in numerous establishments similar to this, the place and it's clientele seem to me to be far below the mark of "quality" The locale should be called the Hole of Death."

Here Dai's demeanor turns formal again. "You all have evidently received the same information I have, for you are here also. This one asks to join you in your efforts. She can be an asset." Dai now folds her arms across her chest, a look of calm expectation on her face as she finally goes silent.

A friend of mine here on RDInn has re-kindled my interest in getting into a game. Another game.

That being said (and done), I would really klike to see this game, with it's enticing potential, get going again.

So:

1. Would the DM be interested in reviving the game (with or without new characters)?

2. Would any of the PLAYERS be interested in reviving the game?

I mean, it's pretty obvious that I would like to see the game running again, but am I the only one?

"Funny you should mention working for a mage. I used henchmen and hirelings often, and always treated them with dignity and respect. Name's Kreegan, once known as Kreegan Kingmaker, mage of no small ability. Well, such it was until a botched curse slipped through my defenses. And even though botched, it was effective, for it ended my career as a mage."

He indicates his left shoulder, where not one, but two arms protrude. One at the shoulder (as normal), and one just below that, with enough of a distance between the two to allow the lower arm some freedom of movement upward.

"Oh, both arms there are fully articulated and useful, but not, it seems, for a mage. The art of spellcasting does not allow for the configuration of an odd number of arms, although I did try, for a time, to make it work. But I was young enough to start another career, and with three arms to bear weapons, I chose to become a warrior. Of course, not being able to cast spells meant I was unemployable as a mage, but I had a savings, of sorts that I could rely on for a time. My training was lengthy and arduous, as can be imagined for most tactics are designed for the use and oordination of two arms and I had to learn to adapt them to encompass the use of three arms. "

"But, there came a time for putting my new abilities to the test. That's when I found out how much of a detriment a third arm could be. Any armorer who would create armor to accomodate the extra appendage would look at me with disdain, sometimes disgust, and then charge me 15 prices to create it. I paid, thinking that it was a necessary evil I was going to have to endure. But even with my skills, my extra extremity made finding employment difficult. Jobs were fewer and farther between, and proceeds earned often didn't last long enough to carry me until the next period of employment. "

"And so I am also here in the O.F.H. line, seeking that which I cannot seem to find myself ..."
