Are we going with level 1's or something different? What type of quest is this? Monty Haul treasure hunt or Sherlock Holmes mystery?

Wouldn't it be fun to run an adventure in Alastari? That would be a grip of work for any DM, but pretty sweet, eh?

Sorry to hear you can't continue, Trip. As a DM, it's always a bummer to leave the story hanging, even more than it is for the players. For what it's worth, I'm still interested to see the continuation of the story, so I'm pulling for you to suddenly get a ton of time freed up so we can continue! But either way, thanks for the journey so far.

If there's room, I'll join up too. Sort of bummed about the old adventure though. It was starting to get very intriguing. I'm a huge Greyhawk fan too. But I totally understand.

Also, Shadowdragon, if the adventure is for 4th level characters, maybe the group can roll up at that level? Just a thought. I'm sure it would be fine either way, but maybe it would be less work on your end.

I agree the door should be checked for traps, opened quietly, and if locked, picked by Sentinel. I say we first take whichever door can be easily and quietly opened.

If it's jammed or held shut, it can be bashed in. But that would be a last resort. DS also has a 65% chance to smash open doors.

Just curious, what spells does our caster have at his disposal?

I'm okay to have DS hold the lantern and wait at the top of the staircase to keep vigil. Plan sounds good to me.

If you guys have a light you're certainly welcome to take the lantern downstairs while you look around.

Deathstalker has a lantern and oil if you guys are interested.

I like Sentinel's plan. I think Sentinel should check rooms for traps before anybody enters, then I'd be okay to investigate. DS will be ready for action whenever needed.

As the group approaches the road and turns eastward, towards the Foaming Mug Inn, Garrus hangs back and attempts to start up a conversation with the Halfling known as Sentinel, which may have seemed a bit strange, since he has rarely spoken with the group to this point. He is discreet with his tone so as not to be overheard by villagers or passing strangers. He relates the morning's events at the farmer's house, and specifically motions to the house at #9 with the suspicious and odd-acting people, as well as the general store at #12.

Garrus suggests to Sentinel that he wants to come back and investigate late that night, and that perhaps with Sentinel's rather small stature, he would be able to get inside and look for some leads and point them in the right direction.

Subject: No Questions Here

No more questions. Time for some action.

Deathstalker doesn't think it's a good idea to tell the mayor anymore info, or ask the mayor for any help. Remember, we still don't truly know where his allegiances lie. If he's not yet annoyed with the group's imposition, there's no need to push our luck.

Futhermore, he thinks the night is going to be the best time to make our move. It might be time to do a little sneaking around, sniffing for clues, and even interrogation. He is very much at home extracting information and coercing people under threat of physical harm.

Not a problem reconvening with the group before moving on, but there's still more investigating to be done IMHO, and the night is the best time to do it.

Deathstalker agrees with the plan to go to the old Inn.

Also, since I've rejoined the group, I can share what the farmer told me about the sneaky people in #9. May or may not be relevant. Perhaps a stakeout is in order, since they tend to leave the house at night. That's a job for a thief.

More jobs for thieves, possibly to break into one of these houses where people have left and came back and rummage around for clues.

BTW, any of our mages have a "Sleep" spell?

The adventure seems to be going smoothly, with some responding more quickly or slowly than others. If there are drops or inactive players, I don't think they would mind the DM taking control of their character. Consider it like being "on maintenance", only without the owner running up a negative balance.

Just to clarify, I was making a suggestion about RPing, not about what your characters should do.

Theoretically, you're no more able to chat with your party members while sitting at the table during an interrogation than you are to chat with me from down the street.

Also, to be clear, I'm not "rules-lawyering", just adding a bit of insight that may or may not be pertinent. Just an FYI, if I'm stuck in a situation similar to this, in the spirit of RP, I'll probably respond without consulting the group in this forum.

You're probably not in a position to banter back and forth taking suggestions, being that you're sitting right across the table from the man.

Just saying, this might be one of those times that winging it would probably be understandable. Perhaps even expected.

Just a thought from elsewhere in the village

Subject: Deathstalker - Group 0

Deathstalker's intense glare partially melts away and he rolls his eyes and smirks with a bit of relief.

"For a second there, I thought you boys were gonna shoot me!" He says from beneath his cowl.

He is almost pleasant as he approaches the porch, but he is still a bit cautious, eyeing his surroundings.

"And you, Mr. Glade," he says with a deadpan expression, "can be my bodyguard, if you ever get tired of farming. It doesn't pay well, but it's never boring!"

Deathstalker walks up to the porch and settles his oddly adorned axe against the wall, keeping his pack with him at all times. He is attempting to keep it as visible as possible to the adjacent trail, should his party members wander down that way.

"The name's D-- uhm...just call me Garrus."

Deathstalker is nice enough yet not well-mannered. He doesn't attempt to wipe his shoes before entering the house, and he doesn't extend his hands or greet his hosts. He never loses his intense edge, and occasionally seems as though he's not listening to the farmer when addressed.

Deathstalker will attempt to follow the farmer's conversation rather than lead it. He will sit if offered, will not eat, but will drink if offered liquor. He will take certain cues to attempt to steer the conversation towards items of interest. He will at all times remain alert of his surroundings.

He will press for more detail if the farmer makes mention of danger about the village, strange occurrances, disappearances, the Temple of Merikka, merchant travellers, or any mention of Orcs. He plays interested, but not too interested. He will not identify himself as an adventurer, but rather as a hired sword passing through town on the way to Hookhill.

Looks like each group will need to elect someone to take the lead and post specifically what the group is doing.

A bit of detail in the posts would be useful. Not too useful just to say "we're going to stick with the plan and go to the Temple". How will the team get there? Are they traveling with weapons drawn? Are they looking for anything along the way? What formation are they walking in?

But first and foremost, someone will have to post for each group. From what I can tell, the designation is:

Group 1 = Hammer
Group 2 = ???
Group 3 = Darque

Just a few questions.

I'm curious to know how combat will work. Will we run a round of combat for each post, and thus, run about 2 rounds of combat a week? For big battles where everyone is involved, that doesn't seem too bad. But for small skirmishes, I'd hate to see 75% of the group wait for weeks while a smaller group swings and misses attacks round after round

On a related note, will there be opportunities to resolve minor or incidental side-encounters offline? For example, if 2 of the party members are split from the group and have an encounter before rejoining, will there be an option of minimizing the waiting time of other players by handling the encounter via IM?

Will there be a "cutoff" or a "run date", where everybody who's gonna post will have posted? I kinda like this idea, as it helps keep all posters' expectations, slow and fast, in check. Also helps in setting a mental clock for when to check back in.

The dominating structure that the party saw upon approaching the town was assumed to be a temple. Whether or not it actually is remains to be seen.

Subject: Deathstalker Encounter

Deathstalker stops in his tracks as the farmer calls out to him. He sighs and slowly turns his head towards his new found friends and noting the woman's reaction, slowly lowers his axe.

“I don’t have business with you, or your kin, farmer.” He replies.

Garrus will not yield his will to the farmer, even though he appears to be outnumbered. He will attempt to read the reactions of the three villagers to determine intent, referring to the years of experience he has served in conflict resolution and collecting debts for his warden and master. He will also attempt to size them up and determine whether or not he's dealing with skilled warriors or untrained villagers with weapons.

By default, he will assume that the farmer and two other men are not intent on fighting, so he will attempt to use levity to break the tension, but will offer no information as to his true purpose or identity. “Nice morning for a stroll. Shame wastin' it on my blood.” If pressed further, he will reply: “You really wanna fight me? If not, I'm lookin' for someone in need of a hired sword.”

However, if he determines that the farmer and two other men are intent on fighting, he will appeal to the farmer’s security. Again, he will offer no information regarding his true purpose or identity: “I don't like my odds. But neither am I alone. I'm part of an escort headed to Hookhill, and the rest of my party isn't far behind.” If pressed further, he will reply: “Enough talk then. You're a man; come on and fight me yourself, if you're up to it. Unless you need protection by little boys and their little toys."

In either case he will do his best to remain non-threatening and sympathetic, as he identifies with poor folk (coming from a low social standing himself). He will not press for information, but if the opportunity presents itself, he will stay a while and talk.

Just an FYI. Garrus is heading East down the road. I'll be keeping an eye out for you guys, and will hopefully meet up with Group 2. Waiting outside might be useful, but Deathstalker has his doubts.

It's not purely impatience, I just don't think the key to the adventure is sitting on the edge of town, especially since the only reason the entire party is waiting is because one farmer had a worried look on his face. There will probably be a lot of that (and lots of other farmers to talk to) IMHO.

Hopefully we all will have some juicy details to report. I guess until then, you can consider me "Group 4"

Deathstalker, the rather (but not abnormally) large human leans against a nearby tree next to his backpack, repeatedly sharpening his axe on his whetstone and eyeing the four party members talking to the farmer. He can't for the life of him figure out why everyone was being so patient. Were these truly "adventurers" or a had he partied with a group of old nannies?

Testing the sharpness of his axe with his thumb, he eyes the group of 4 as they prepare to enter the house. At this point, he can bear it no more. He wraps his whetstone in cloth and places it into his pack, fastens his leather armor, fastens his cloak and pulls the hood over his head, pulls his pack onto his back and heads over and says a few words to Doogan. Then, axe in hand, heads East down the main road.

Deathstalker will head East down the road to 9, taking mental note of farmers, traders, adventurers and the like. He will stop and take note of any abandoned looking buildings or land. He will attempt to locate areas of social gathering such as inns, town halls, etc. And generally, he will stop to investigate anything that looks out of place.

Deathstalker told Doogan that he is heading to the Temple at 21 via the south road, and to meet him there with group 2. If he doesn't see them, he will come back via the north road and catch up with them. If for some reason they don't make it out that way, he will return to this spot at noon.

No offense to anyone in the group, but if group 1 goes in, I'm going to have a look around the village.

Don't really see the point in waiting. Pretty much defeats the purpose of splitting into groups IMO.
