Subject: Chatting Snaring Twins

"Hm," intoned Kusardo, seeming to acknowledge the Twin's statement without reprisal. "The root town for the Xi Server is Reborn City Lia Fail, and there's no level range for it. I've never been there before."

Kusardo could probably have asked more about why they were headed to that server in particularly, but at this point it seemed like nothing more than a chance to babble on senselessly. He preferred to keep his peace and leave his curiosity waiting to be satisfied. Besides, it seemed like he would get nothing but riddles from the Twins anyways, so he decided he didn't want to bother with more questions.

Then again, the somewhat curt and direct Edge Punisher thought no hurt could come from inquiring perfectly benign and general information, the likes of which a newbie to The World R:3, and a former occasional R:1 and R:2 player, would not be aware of.

"The times that I've played The World have been few and far between, unfortunately. What can you tell me about the Reborn City Lia Fail?"

[Now Playing: Final Fantasy VII - Fanfare]

The Edge Punisher twirls his broadsword in a propeller-like fashion for a couple of revolutions before placing it on his back. This appeared to be his 'victory dance' of sorts, except without the 'dance' part.

"Thanks," Kusardo said plainly to the Twin Lightnings.

[Now Playing: Yuki Kajiura - .hack//SIGN - Fear]

He took stock of the room they were in, walking along the walls and looking for anything out of the ordinary, as well as any path out of there but the one that they came threw. He was intrigued by the 'Outer Dungeons'; it was like nothing he had ever seen before, and he was as anxious as he was curious to discover the secrets of this place within The World, but somehow without. His anxiety was made of both excitement and apprehension, as figured well enough that he didn't have much of an idea of what he was getting into.

After making a brief round of the room, Kusardo turned to regard the two Twins and asked, "So what is the purpose of this 'Outer Dungeon'? A haven for hackers, maybe?"

Subject: The Grass is Always Greener...

"Hm. Evasive, huh? I didn't know there was more than one player to you."

Kusardo turned to look down the hallway. When Twin Lightning said that they were drawn, she wasn't kidding. That only begged more questions from the newbie player: What was the source of that sound? And what did the she... or rather, what did he mean by "affecting more than just character data?" Supposedly, it could mean anything from an educational experience or a scary prank for newbies; either a quickly forgotten event...or...

...something that remains in memory for a long time... for better or worse.

To be sure, he was more than interested to go, but he would not show such enthusiasm, staring dimly down the dark and empty corridor of digital space. As Twin Lightning said, he was drawn to keep going down this proverbial rabbit hole, both by the sound and by the prospect of seeing something that normally doesn't come around... or so he's told.

Games are played for fun, to imitate reality without it's limitations or consequences. Games are played to escape from the stresses and difficulties of life, but also to have fun and go to the places in the mind where one is free, and happy, if even for a short time. Some play games to escape from the lives that seem to crush all around them, while others play as a healthy habit. No matter which of these situations, a game is a game, and that's about it. As far as Kusardo was concerned, that is all he knew and cared about when playing games; and so as far as he was concerned, there
was nothing stopping him from heading towards the black corridor...

But it felt so real... and ... weird. Almost as if his body was reacting in fear of the future he tread towards. Almost as if he was afraid of what would happen...

"No... ridiculous," he said out loud, but mostly to himself, and shook his head. He continued to move forward, intrigued and silently enraptured by what awaited him.

Subject: Within the World, but Without...

"'Normally inaccessible'?"

Kusardo looked around him, discerning the simple vector-boxes that made up the walls and floor that gave this 'Outer Dungeon' some distinction from perpetual void. His eyes fell on Twin Lightning, whom he had previously not met. He did know, however, that Twin Lightning was the character who posted questions on The Board to ask about strange areas, particularly ones that the Adept Rogue Maera is said to roam.

He seemed to stare at him for a few uncomfortable seconds before finally piping back up, "So, how is it that all of us are here? Or better yet... why?"

Regardless of facial cues, the sound of the question made Twin Lightning feel as if the mildly taciturn newbie Edge Punisher was suspicious of him (yeah, I know it's the sister this time, but Kusardo doesn't know that). While there was no hostility in his expression or cadence, his question seemed to ask much more than it did literally: What is this place for? How could we possibly be here? And how do you know about it?

Subject: The Rabbit Hole

Blackness... lined by a dark shade of blue for the ground below. It seemed like the panorama of a dream's prelude, or a nightmare's; a surreal emptiness that seemed to beckon the body forward while the mind held it back. Kusardo was mesmerized by the sight, but nevertheless focused on discerning that faint, muffled sound.

"What... is that?" he asks in wary wonder, almost in a whispering tone. While his mind tries to figure out more and more what the sound is, he moves forward into the void, past the false wall that so cleverly hid it. After that...

Kusardo walked to the wall where Kiku pointed, just beside the Chim-Chim track and leaning towards the northern path. Looking to his right, he noticed that the track was coming around again, and absentmindedly decided to snatch one of the Chim-Chim's orb for future use.

Once finished with that task, the Edge Punisher drew his sword to the area of the wall where Kiku claimed the sound came from. Drawing back the massive blade, he made a swift smash into the wall to see if it was false, hiding something valuable behind it.

Kusardo stood there with his broadsword across his shoulders, his off hand hanging on the it. "Don't bother being a Player Killer. It's overrated and there are too many of them as it is," he said with his trademark dull, but mildly stern inflection. "I doubt you'll get any satisfaction out of it, especially if you don't like fighting."

He passed a few seconds looking over her profile and reaction, perceiving a good level of innocence and naivety in those big, scarlet puppy-dog eyes of hers. After allowing a moment to establish eye contact, he continued, "If you don't intend on fighting at all in The World, then you're wasting your time. Sometimes you will have to fight if you want to explore it, and unless you enjoy being a floor mat, fighting is the only way you can be strong enough to defend yourself from other Player Killers, because you just might be a prime target for anyone. But in any case, do as you like."

The Edge Punisher seemed a little disinterested in what this new arrival would do with her time here, or if she really intended on killing them, but he was willing to give some free advice at the very least, albeit a bit forward and harsh. It seemed he also disliked using the acronym "PKers" and would refrain from using it as much as possible.

A in C Major? Well, if it meant anything, then I suppose Kusardo's lucky he paired up with someone who could tell the difference. All he cared about, though, was where the sound was coming from. He moved down the north passage a couple steps, and then to the southern passage, attempting to ascertain how much closer or farther the sound of the note is depending on where he goes.

Subject: Game or Guilt?

OOC: Will you be controlling Kaelyn's character? Or are you gonna wait for him to come back?

"Hmph. I see." It seemed the idea of stealing a small creature's life essence for energy brought with it no guilt or sense of cruelty in The World. After all, this is a game; the very practice of battling to gain items, money, and experience is no different. Removing that would leave only social and exploratory gameplay, which in and of itself would sound perfectly permissible on paper; however, if that were the case, then Kusardo and the like would likely play the game less, if at all.

Now... where to?

Kusardo stood between the passages running north and south, wondering which path would be best to follow. He looked down each for anything out of the ordinary.

Subject: Phew...

He had acted recklessly. Fortunately nothing happened, but it would be a waste to suffer death from a simple trap and lose precious experience points and loot. Kusardo the Edge Punisher knew better; he had played this game and many others before this one, and one of the most important things he learned was that it never pays to be careless. It may have been three years since he played The World back when it was Revision 2, but he was more than a green-horned novice.

Shaking off his guilty carelessness, Kusardo attempts to observe the statistics of the item before equipping it. "Thanks..." he said to Kimono, "I was careless. I won't let it happen again." While this might seem like he's asking for forgiveness, he wouldn't ask it of anyone but his own ego. In any case, the tone was too gruff and serious to be apologetic.

He turned to Kiku's responses, still somewhat stumped. "...What do you do with them?"

"I suppose if it's necessary," said Kusardo flatly.

While Kiku made her way to the trolly, Kusardo walked to the treasure chest and opened it with a swift kick.

He noticed, after raiding the chest, the weird looking creatures emerging from the trolly with the translucent orbs on their head. Kiku chased one of them and stole the orb off their head, causing them to disappear in a puff of smoke.

"Um... what are you doing?"

OOC: Cool, sounds fun.

Damn it! I underestimated their fire power... so these are typical for Level 3 players, huh?

Kusardo brings his cleaver to the ready. Past its massive edge he eyes the farthest goblin as his target, intending to confound its spell-casting attempts. He makes a running charge towards it with his Horizon's Edge in tow, then jumping into the air after passing the first goblin, lifting his weapon overhead in apparent defiance of gravity. The next moment sees it crashing explosively to the ground where the goblin stood, ensuring that Kusardo's enemy would stand no longer.

OOC: How many attacks are you capable of in one turn? btw, I just intended that to be a combo, not a full-charge attack. Works eitherway I suppose.

Mage types, reflected Kusardo. It seemed that they can only cast magic if they have enough room, otherwise they wouldn't be trying to hit them with their staves. Either that, or they were simply taken aback at his charge, in which case he would follow through and finish the match.

Kusardo brought his enormous blade back behind him with his both hands clutching the hilt. He charged his attack for about three seconds before unleashing an explosive horizontal swath across the two remaining goblin casters.

Finally, the moment of the first battle had arrived. Kusardo was anxious to begin battling, although he looked as sober as a seasoned soldier facing battle with a strong countenance. "All right," he said, addressing his party members, "let's go!"

With that, he charges one of the goblins and unleashes a combo on them with his Horizon's Edge.

Kusardo nodded to Kimono. "Got it. Let's get going, then," he said matter-of-factly. If he seemed anxious to get started, the newbie Edge Punisher expressed that sentiment almost like a chore he wished to be over with: little vocal enthusiasm, but firm and simple determination.

He brandished his Edge once to get a feel for it (and by that I mean pressed the "X" button ) as he made his way to the cave's mouth. Once there, he stood waiting for his female party members, Kiku and Kimono, recommitting their names to memory.

I decided to do a lot of research on the .hack universe last night, now that I'm getting back into it. Found out a lot of good stuff, considering my only exposure to .hack was //SIGN, //Liminality, and a few episodes of //Root.

But now, some questions.

1) You said that this is The World R:3. How many years later is that than R:2, and is it before or after R:X? Or is it just replacing it altogether?

2) What's going on/has happened in the real world now?

"Hmph," was his reaction. The young Edge Punisher didn't look upset, but rather amused; his lips curved up slightly into his right cheek, suspiciously looking like a smirk. His eyes, however, spoke the same firmness it did when Kimono bumped into him.

The way she presented her case made Kusardo think for a moment... So, she's not a new player, then. Perhaps it would be best to pair up with her and Kiku after all.

Kusardo's tough expression softened up a bit, though, when he spoke, "Alright, fine. I guess it can't hurt to be in a team."

"Here's my member address," he said, giving her his info. "So where did you have in mind to go?"

(Heh, he's gonna take some convincing)

Kusardo didn't look particularly thrilled. He stood there looking over the pink-haired scythe-wielder with an dull, yet serious mien: Excited, care-free, and clumsy came to mind, but he figured they were both the same level, so it would be arrogant to assume he's too good to waste his time with these two girls. On top of that, she was an Adept Rogue, so it was safe to say that she had similar potential to Maera. Logically, he may learn something by fighting with her, but being the stubborn and independent character that he is, Kusardo was not yet willing to agree to a party.

"Kimono," he said aloud, reading her character specifics from the left of his screen, "... nice name... but I like to work alone."

Subject: Birth of a Goal

Kusardo just stood there.

"In... credible," he voiced to himself. It was like nothing he had ever seen... or experienced before. When the virtual arena was about to be flooded by Maera's attack, he could feel his own hairs standing on end as the air seemed to charge with static; something he would never experience while playing. An immense sensation of foreboding followed shortly after as he anticipated the fruition of Maera's offensive.

For the last few minutes of the match, he had completely forgotten he was in a game.

After he saw the violet-clad rogue disappear--after having caught a glimpse of her chilly blue eyes as she looked around--he simply stood there at the edge of the rails with a look of awestruck amazement; however, behind those eyes began to smolder a latent flame. She was so strong and so skilled that their attacks proved ineffective. She was fast, but if any hit on her registered as '0', it didn't matter. It only took her one devastating attack to wipe out her opponents. And all this... as a harvest cleric at the same level as Team Cherry Blossom.

Kusardo remembered The Board posts he had seen earlier that night. The Enigmatic... yeah, she is an enigma if I've ever seen one...

He tightened his grip on his Horizon's Edge until his pixelated knuckles turned white.

I ... want to be stronger, like her. No... I'll surpass her. She may be an adept rogue, but I'll show her that this Edge Punisher can do anything. After seeing this battle, all I want to do is train and become stronger; there's nothing else to The World than that.

Kusardo sighed roughly, returning his Horizon's Edge to his back. He left the railings and began to make his way back to the lobby. Passing by Kiku, Kimono, and Twin Lightning -- he hadn't taken notice of them -- his eyes were set firmly with a determined look, burning with his now barely awakened goal. The night's not over for me, yet. I'll start with a Recorder in Mac Anu and then find some dungeon in the Delta Server to explore.

[Now Playing: Yuki Kajiura - The World]

"All right. Time to see what's happening in The World tonight."

A young teenager sits at his desk two hours before midnight, illuminated by his computer screen and the shine of the far-off moon and stars through the open window. Of course, it wouldn't matter to him once he donned the FMD; he may as well already be among the stars and other far off places to explore once he decided to enter The World. While most would consider it nothing more than illusions, he more than welcomed the almost alcoholic binge of this virtual facade. He knows he's no different a person than he is outside of The World, but The World gives him a chance to act a somewhat different shade -- a less self-conscious shade. It's this sense of freedom and liberty that keeps him coming back for more fun, for doing something and being someone that feels more worthwhile than what he knows well enough.

Immediately, as every time he logs in, he feels the dull and boring reality peel away from his mind as The World unfolds around him. It takes shape, penetrating his sensation, making him feel like he is where he wants to be. After all, this is most usually where he wants to be at this time of night. However, whenever he finds himself wandering the new locales and dungeons of The World, he couldn't help but feel that this wasn't the same World he knew a few years ago. Like a new, strange song, it makes him miss quietly the way The World used to be; for some reason, it was more fun back then. Then again, life seemed better a few years before now...

---

Kusardo, a newbie Edge Punisher, walks out of the Chaos Gate and onto the lobby of the dome-shaped structure. Looking around, he takes in the environment once again for a brief moment, and then decides to move ahead into town. "Lets see what's going on today..." he said to himself matter-of-factly, pushing open the doors of the lobby and walking out into the simulated (day? night?) of The Eternal Mac Anu.

Word on the street was the craze surrounding the Arena battle. The most he found out was that Lady Maera was a combatant; a seemingly legendary Adept Rogue who, according to the topics he checked on The Board, has been mysteriously playing the role of "Player Killer" to those who cross her turf... wherever that may be, anyways. Kusardo was not one to waste thoughts on famous peoples or celebrities; none of them ever concerned him, and he could care less if they ever would. He was there for himself, and no one else; an independent mercenary, a lone wolf, call him what you may. The only time he would care is if he found himself face to face with a Player Killer, of which he's been hearing an awful lot lately. If he were defeated in combat, he would swear to even the score regardless of who it was. That was what he lived for in The World: to become stronger through battles, and seeking them out in places familiar and not.

Of course, it wouldn't be right to rule out he doesn't enjoy the view once in a while.

"The Arena, huh? ... hmm, why not? Might as well see what the big deal is, for now."

It wasn't time yet for the battle to begin, but it wouldn't take long, and the novice Edge Punisher found nothing better to occupy his time than to go there and wait for the show to begin.

Sounds interesting. I'm new to the whole DnD thing, but I've played some pretty simple RPGs in the past -- quite a few, actually.

In any case, I would like to join the RPG, but this all looks a little daunting. I don't have any materials of nor any experience with DnD manuals, so I'd appreciate any help you're willing to offer.
