Subject: Two jobs plus sleep equals no time

It has become necessary for me to begin working a second full-time job to pay bills caused by medical and holiday over-spending.

This will only leave time for sleep and little play, if any at all.

Sorry to DMs of games I am in, but I have to back out of them because I just don't know if I can post reliably for quite a while ...

Subject: Bartering info?

Gnurk wondered yet again at the propensity of the human need for conversation. But asking was a way to knowledge. He himself knew that. He intended to ask the man questions to learn something, so was it so unfair thta tis man would have the same desire? It would have to be a trede-off of information, not a one-sided garnering, as Gnurk had hoped. This showed tht the man was not an innocent, but intelligent in his own right, with an agenda of his own, whatever that might be.

Ah, well. Bartering was not beyond his experrience. Fine.

"Sorry, John, for not giving my name first-out. I am a traveler and learner, originally from the far east. As such, I often meet otherss, but seldom burden them with my presence for any length of time. My name is strange to some, and most just end up calling me Gogh."

In about a half-hour of following the man in relative silence, it began to drizzle. Gnurk's only concern about the rain was his appearance and whether the rain would somehow compromise his ruse of appearing human. The two rounded a curve in the path and the man strode toward a shack on a hill. Not large, but comfortable for a single person. Odd. The man had alluded to the presence of others when he had said "its rare we see coimpany ...". Maybe he was a member of a society of some sort.

He holds the door open for Gnurk to enter first, and then enters himself and closes the door to shut out the precipitation. As the man moved to putter about the shack, readying something unknown to Gnurk, his ebullient personality continued with a few more questions about why "Gogh" was out wherre he was, and did he want aught to eat or drink. In actuality, Gnurk was famished, but kept to his "human act" as much as possible. He could eat later.

"Something to drink would be fine, John. Whatever is convenient for you. I have just recently eaten some travel fare, so I'm not all that hungry. As to the why of my presence, i can only say that I am here to learn what life is like in a city as large as Badon is said to be. Never having been there, or to a city that large, I am ever the curious traveler, learning of other cultures and ways. It is also the reason for my question about wha, or who, t to look out for in the city. I have learned that there are undesirable elements in nearly every place that can swallow an unknowing person before he knows it, removing him from existence in some cases, if you know what I mean."

"And you? Why would you choose to live this far outside the city, all alone? Is city life that distasteful to you? I choose to be alone because traveling that way removes responsibility for anyone but myself. Why do you yourself choose this solitary life?"

Yer post wasn't up when I asked the question, so I couldn't have read it. That's why I asked the question

And now that I have reaad it, the question still stands. Nowhere does your post mention a BLACK dragon, so why specifically ask about the blacks?

Never mind, I already know the answer ...

Subject: Gnurk's Dilemma:

"Howdy stranger!", came from benid him. In spite of himself, Gnurk was surprised, frustrated, and impressed, all at the same time. He was so "rooster-confiodent" that he had not bothered at any point furing his hourney to see if he had been followed. Even now, he was not sure that was the case. But the man, for all the tatters that he wore, skillfully moved as silently as a cat on the prowl.

Turning to face the the voice behind him, he heard the man speak of the obvious storm rolling in, and the offered to Gnurk of shelter in his home, which Gnurk assumed was nearby.

Gnurk's opened his mouth to reply that he was fine, thanks, but stopped himself. If the man lived this close to the city of Badon. he could have knowledge that would be invaluable to Gnurk in accomplishing his goal. While not able to change the deep, rumbling timber of his voice, Gnurk was able, with a minimum of effort, to thenge the quality of it to a softer, more "human" smoothness.

"I accept your offer of shelter, good sir, with much appreciation. Please lead the way."

Even as he commited himself to this action, Gnurk felt a pang of regret. His current appearance was maintained by a spell that was soon to expire, and he was not sure whether or not he should reveal himself as a practitioner of magic in an effort to bolster his sel-altered appearance with his last spell in reserve. Regardless, sometime during the night, he was going to revert to his true form and possibly cause this man anything from alienation to terror. While that was of no real concern to him, it meant that he would have to get the information he sought as soon as possible, while the man wass accepting of him as he appeared. So why not start now?

"I am a traveler from a far land. I have heard of the city of Badon, as most have but, again like most, I have never been there before. Do you know much about the city? Are there people I should maybe watch out for or be wary of?"

Hearing Thumpa's willingness to include brother Perrin in the group, Kay nods his head, smiling broadly. "I think that would be a good idea, too. But I gotta ask, Perrin. Other than writing down stories, do you have other things you can do? Like fight, or cook, or some other skil that would be useful for the rest of us?

Subject: The big guy:

Kay had not taken a seat like the others, but had remained standing. He had been leaning against the wall, and now shrugged himself upright and spoke, somewhat hesitantly.

" Ummm, I was with some other friends before these ladies said I could join them. There were nine of us before. We ran across a guy who was bossing a bunch of other guys around to beat up on us so he could use magic on us. This bad-guy-boss-man killed a lot of my friends and hurt me and two of my other friends pretty bad. My two good buddies finally made the bad-guy run away, and they carried me out and to a temple to get healed. When I got healed, the people at the temple said I couldn't stay any more. My buddies had left some money for me to pay the holy people, so I paid them and took the rest of the money and left. My buddies who carried me were Markalian Redcoat and Skratch Juniper. When they left me at the temple, they said they were going after the bad guy. I wonder if they ever got him. I'd like to see them again to find out how they made out. "

"Anyway, the money lasted for a while. I still have some of it, and some jewels from my friends. But I knew I would run out if I didn't find a job to get more money to buy stuff I needed. I met these ladies and asked it they needed someone to protect them. They didn't laugh at me like some did, they talked about it and said yes."

He pauses here, and his face forms a dark scowl that quickly disappears, but not without what seems to be conscious thought, as if forcefully repressing an unpleasant memory.

"I remember that I used to be able to understand stuff and remember stuff better than I do now. I don't know why I could then and I can't now, but I just remember it. I try not to think about it much because the more I think about it, the madder I get. I'm alive because my friends helped me. I am supposed to help my friends the same way. If I can do that, it makes me happy."

Answered already, so it's no longer a guess, but the rest will remain ...

From what I gather, Gnurk-Ogh's studies would have been done in seclusion with one of a race with a strained relationship with mankind (putting it mildly) ...

And, after 600+ years, any knowledge of him would be as obscure as that of dragons themselves, no?

That's my assessment anyway ...

I have been wrong before ...

Topic: Of Dragons and Men.
Subject: A liong journey begins with some confusion

"I understand, Master."

Which was only a half-truth. He understood that humans must learn that dragons would not disappear again. Not willingly. Not at all. Humans had a nasty habit of destroying what they feared, and they feared because of a collective lack of knowledge. But the killing of humans to make the point his master required would only serve to strain even further the already-stressed relationship twixt dragonkind and humankind. This he did not understand. And so, again, began his internal struggle to eliminate that small spark of light he had been unable to eradicate from his being, even after these long 15 years. And after 15 years, Nglassmoln knew Gnurk inside and out. Gnurk was cerrtain of it. After all, there was less of Gnurk to know ...

Gnurk rose and began making preparations to travel, still wondering why he had been unable to quench that spark. Even Master Nglassmoln knew and noticed it, and Gnurk knew that it was a source of consternation for the mammoth beast. But still he allowed Gnurk to return and study with him. For Gnurk-Ogh, sorcerer-turned-disciple-of-dragons, it was all about learning the mind-set of the dragon, to emulate their use of power and wield it for himself. While his outward appearance was most definitely draconic in nature, he did not want to be or become a dragon. A student of draconic knowledge he had become, at the whim of one who recognized Gnurk's heritage. But Gnurk himself was also willing, for he desired power, and here was one who was willing to teach him. He owed the Master, but did not intend to be subservient to him for the rest of his life for it. Gnurk, at some point, wanted some of that draconic power for himself, for personal and selfish reasons.

The power he desired to wield was intended to be wielded for his own benefit, not that of another, however powerful.. He understood his relationship with his master all too well. The master always stopped just short of making Gnurk feel subservient, allowing that spark of arrogance to remain. Gnurk could appreciate that, but also knew that the blade of that knowledge had two edges and could cut both ways. So he himself always stopped just short of betrayal. Oh, there were times of punishment for Gnurk-Ogh. Terrible punishments, they were, when they happened. But they made Gnurk stronger of will, more able to stoically endure, more determined not to put himself in that position again. And it had been a long time since Gnurk's last punishment. Which meant that he had learned something else of value: how to recognize his own degree of power in relation to an opponent -- or an associate.

A fleeting thought popped into Gnurk's brain. The Master had not told him where to go to perform his task. So it would be up to him to choose his direction. More information could be gained more quickly in a large city, one with both traffic and trade in large quantities. After mulling over the names, locations, and knowledge of a few cities Gnurk knew to fit that description, the city of Badon was deemed by Gnurk-Ogh to be a likely choice. There, then. That is where he would go.

Gnurk didn't like to deal with "townies" in cities of any size, but did so when necessary. His chief reason for his reluctance to deal with others was his actual appearance. He retained his orcish good looks, but had changed over the years to become more reptilian in appearance, with thickening hide, scales, ridges in some places, claws, and tearing teeth. This appearance was enough to induce some to attack him on sight, others to run in fear (Gnurk always smiled at that reaction), and still others to gather in enough numbers to force him to retreat to safety. He had power, but he was not fool enough to think himself invicible. As it stood, he could alter his appearance with magic for the necessary time to do what he had to do. Thank the gods he had not grown a tail !! That would have been deucedly hard to disguise, in any event. Gnurk tended to get short-tempered when he felt he was wasting his time. Ah, well. He would have to endure this necessary discomfort until he discovered what he could to make his task simpler or more attainable.

As he traveled, whenever he knew he was about to encounter others he would magically alter his appearance to assume the form of a large, muscular, dark-skinned human. Even when near a city, he would not seek lodging there. He had no fear of discomfort from any except the most extreme and dangerous weather. And even then, if he wanted "critter comforts", he had a tent. When he camped, it was well away from any path, road, or trail to minimze the chance of encounter. When he camped, he camped cold, unless he could find a handy cave or abandoned shelter. There he would build a fire out of sight from prying eyes. He kept the killing of game for fresh meat to a minimum to avoid drawing the attention of the odd unknown druid or elf who might be near.

And so he began his journey, alone and uneasy, but resolved.

1 -- That clears things up a bit. but does that mean my character's particular journey spans 600+ years? Or am I "time-stop-encapsulated" until needed? I haven't a clue how to merge the disparate timelines -- yet.

2 -- I could re-write Gnurk's history and make his studies the result fo a long search in obscure places, without the benefit of a personal relationship with a dragon. this would put him on an "even keel" with the others, and on the same timeline, no?

3 -- Regardless, I'll pull the post for now. Too many unknowns to tie together for the current post to work. It's no problem. No harm, no foul. It's just that a 600-year gam is hard to justify with a short-lived half-orc ...

Well, at least two people recognised my post for what it was.

But to answer RK's question: I am a student (still) of anthropology with a special interest in cultural history. My particular interest is the Mayan culture. To that end, I hava an extensive library of well-published but little-read books from which text is seldom quoted. This is chiefly because the content goes against the typically-held wisdoms ...

First, I said nothing about the end of the world. Your interpretation of my words is exactly that which you attribute to others placing on the words of Nostradzmus. I think I'm flattered ...

Although I agree with your assessment of Nostradamus' rantings, he did predict an upheaval at the beginning of the second millenium.

As does the Mayan calendar (and most Native American philosophies), but The Mayan calendar is more specific as to the date.

Neither prediction heralds the end of the world, just the end of the world as we know it to be.

A "re-arrangement of the order of things"? Maybe.

A general upheaval and/or a new beginning? Possibly.

Hints of "cyclic purging" by nature or a "higher power"?

It may also be something as simple as the last bastion of "hyper-arrogant freedom" going down the tubes and being replaced by -- something else. A "wake-up call"? ...

Nostradamus predicted it (in a general fashion).

Teh Mayan calendar predicts it (specifically).

The Mayan calandar has proven to be more specifically accruate than Nostradamus' "glittering generalities".

If it is bound to happen, all the collected knowledge in the world can't and won't stop it. And there will be very few left to care about details after the fact.

How about a gnomish Paladin?

Disdains horseflesh in favor of riding dogs. He considers them to be more intelligent, with different and unique attack modes. He himself is out to prove that small packages do not necessarily hold small accomplishments, so he prefers to be the only person of "small stature" in a group.
