Subject: Isaac

" ... I'd rather get out of the rain and sleep somewhere dry ... "

Aryan's lament was not unexpected, nor was she alone in feeling that way. But the statement carried a hint of annoyance that engendered the same feeling in Isaac when he heard it. The annoyance Isaac felt was not that which Aryan felt, nor was it for the same reason or reasons. He glanced in her direction and shook his head.

"I would rather not spend the night in hot and humid discomfort either, Aryan. But what is to guarantee an uneventful jurney from here to the lights of -- whatever that is down there? Part of what we have experienced should not have come about on the road that I know so well. This leads me to believe that we are not where I thought we were. And since we are not where I thought we were, and I don't know how we came to be where we are, I won't -- cant -- guarantee safety in the vicinity of those lights, for I know not the place."

"The vermin that came at us back there came from both where we had come from and where we were going. But we didn't pass any of them as we traveled. At least, not any that we saw. If we travel further in our current condition, we risk encoutering more of them, with ourselves only more tired than we are now."

"But," here Isaac grins in an attempt to take the sting out of his words, "if we go on to what seems to be the village of my youth, we may indeed find safe -- and dry -- shelter. I won't gainsay you that. At this point, I believe that the only sure safety we have is what we make for ourselves, whereever we are, and however uncomfortable it may be. And I'm hoping our situation will only be temporary and the light of a safe day will shine upon us soon."

"What I'm saying is this: As much as I would like to see my home, and as soon as possible, I'm for staying here until daylight, then going into the village below. But I am no dictator. My opinion has been voiced. Anyone else have any ideas?"

Subject: Befuddled and bewildered

Would that Isaac had the foresight of Falloes, Patron of the Needy! Not very long after his changed decision to stay and fight with the others, Shianna's successful routing of a large number of the foul creatures that had beset the companions had turned the outcome of the battle from grim to successful.

But nearly all of them had injuries, some severe. Isaac himself had a nasty wound on his own chest, clavicle to ribs, that pained him severely. Volkmar was likewise wounded, but his alertness and energy seemed not to falter because of it. Either he was immune to all but the pain of mortal wounds, or he was one stone-faced khord! Isaac was of the opinion that it was the latter of the two assessments. With Volkmar, he stood guard while Shianna performed healing on Syana, Neri, and himself. After his own receipt of Shianna's healing blessing, he still had pain and stiffness, but it was at least more bearable. He watched as the black-clad khord accepted the healiing touch of Shianna as well, but Volkmar's face showed what seemed to Isaac to be reluctance.

He was about to reply to Shianna's query about which direction to travel in, when Neri answered first. As Isaac turned to listen to her thoughts, he was startled when Neri reached up and pulled his head down to her own. She then further bewildered him with a kiss on the mouth that was, as far as Isaac was concerned, was unearned gratitude from the paladin. Wide-eyed surprise made him drop his sword to the soaked earth. Then he felt the healing warmth of the kiss spread from his jaw downward through his body to alleviate even more of the pain and irritation of his wound. Okay, so it wasn't gratitude. But it was still nice ...

Once released from the grip of Neri's hands, he shook his head, thinking, 'Oh, for the sake of the heavens! She is doing what she thinks is her duty. As she ever does. No more to it than that.' But he could not, for the life of himself, keep a smile from tugging at the corners if the mouth that had just been so "abused".

He took a deep breath as he bent to retrieve his dropped blade, more to compose himself than because he needed it. Then he said, "I agree that moving on in our condition is not wise, for many reasons. but camping in the sight and smell of such as this offal we have just dispatched is not desirable option, either. As far as the village I once thought was there, I am no longer certain we are where I thought we were. But turning back to whence we came is not what I am wont to do at this point. Move on we should, but only when there is light enough to see at least some distance ahead of us. So methinks we should move at least a bit further and huddle in misery until the morn."

(( 00c: if there is a tree within walking distance with enough clearance under its branches for them to settle in, he will indicate moving there ... ))

Subject: Waffles, anyone?

Isaac had a sudden flash of insight even as he made his intentions known to the others. It wasn't going to be as easy as strike-down-the-opponent-and-move-on.

As he heard Shianna again attempt to affect the abominations that had reinforced the four they had engaged, he realized that they had to take all of these vermin out, for various reasons:

One of their number seemed to be seriously injured. This did not bode well for movement, in any case. Slowed down by an inured member, the creatures that had beset them would have more of a chance to catch or overtake them.

And on the subject of movement, no matter which way they traveled, they would eventually tire. If they left anything to follow them, they would have to face them later and be even less effective for being weary. Ant these things didn't seem to tire.

If he, or any of the others, had to pause to engage an opponent, they ran the risk of being attacked by others as they approached..

Neri had volunteered to stay and fight to delay the creatures and cover their retreat, and Volkmar himself had not changed his stance or resolve. Nor had the khord said aught to indicate that he was for retreating. Further humbled by the actions of those two, Isaac couldn't leave and let them take the brunt of all these attacks. No, they all had to stay and hack this out.

He informed Neri of this new change-up of intent: "Neri, if you don't go, I don't go. We have to do this together. With our blades and Volkmar's spear, we should be able to surround the casters. Put them in the middle to better protect them.. Volkmar? What say you?"

1) .. Who knew my problem with names would cause such a ruckus?

2) .. Yes'm, I mneant Neri instead of Keri.

3) .. Meera (wolf) is with Shianna (priest), not Syana (bard). Was just helping Syaha in the best interest of the party. (More of a grasp of the abstract than some people I know ...)

4) .. I also (for some reason) visualized the wolf, Volkmar, and Syanna attacking the same critter. But no, don change a thing in the write-up. Just a matter of altering visual(s). And actually, that new outlook makes things a little better for us, in the long run, I think. So "maybeee meez-a be staying put, now"

5) .. The point about showing our collective back is well taken, but seeing that there are two injured instead of one, the chances of eliminating them soon is much greater, it just means a change in tactics (which I won't metagame by mentioning here).

.. Please, no more bating the DM about undead. I would like to survive this game without having to create more than one character to do so. But then again, the Dice Gods hold sway ...

EmyBEAR, I honestly and sicerely apologize. All posts with that reference have been duly edited and the name corrected.

I have a character in another game (on another site) named Olafin Gumybeard. Evidently when I typed the "mybear" part of your name, the fingers take over and type the last "d" automatically.

I am really, truly sorry. I meant no disrespect. It was an unnoticed typo.

Subject: Isaac the Invinceable (?)

Isaac was initially heartened to see (or hear) everyone working in unison. But while his and Keri's blows seemed to have stopped each of their respective opponents, the others apparently did not fare so well.

Syana, her wolf companion, and the khordish Volkmar all struck the same foul creature -- Volkmar striking twice -- and yet that one still stood and moved! Aryan's magical bolts didn't appear to affect the crearures any more than did Shianna's attempt to ward them away. Things were quickly turning from mediocre to bad.

Then Isaac noted movement in the direction from which they had just come. Glancing back, he saw yet more of the undead loam-encrusted scum approaching from that direction, twice again the number they originally faced. Not even Falloes the Protector would have done this to a mere mortal, angry or not.

As he attacks again, he speaks quickly, "Neri? Volkmar? Syana? Things here are getting dire. I suggest moving around and beyond these slow-moving vermin and heading out of their reach. But to where? I am no longer sure where we are. I think we should move ahead as we were going and take our chances away from these ever-increasing numbers. If this keeps up, they'll soon be able to overrun us!"

Not waiting for a reply, he shouts for the others he cannot see, "Aryan! Shianna! They have become too many! Unless you have a better idea, this is fast getting untenable. Try to move around them, and move fast!. Avoid contact and head for the road in the direction we were going. We will do the same and discuss other options when we're clear of this mess and these creatures ... "

(( 00C: If necessary, Isaac will attempt to slash a gap in their foes to allow passage for the others to get through, unless there is ample room to just detour around the incoming masses ... ))

Subject: Caution? Prudence? Yeah, right!

Once the figures were close enough for Isaac to see them for what they were -- not a pleasant sight at all! -- he didn't hesitate to pull his sword from the scabbard, but had to pause as Aryan moved to the rear, suddenly passing by him and crying for help.

As he finished drawing the weapon and readied himself to meet-and-cleave these abominations, he thought, ' 'Falloes? Benevolent One? Is this how you taught J'hannik the error of arrogance over prudence? You could have chosen better circumstances, I think. Or maybe not.' '

Aloud, he said, mostly to himself, but loud enough for all to hear plainly, "So much for getting information from this lot."

As he moved to engage these shambling sticks of rotting flesh, he had no fear that his companions would do other than the best they could, for their survival had -- and did -- depend on cooperation.

For sheer fighting ability, the Khord Volkmar, for all his strangeness, was more than capable of making his skills effective. The Cleric, Shianna, and the Paladin, Neri, he also trusted to hold their own as well as he. Syana and Aryah, altough sometimes unpredictable, also knew their capabilities well enough to make the right choices of action or aid, as became necessary.

(( OOC: If all the walking-dead-meat-popsicles look alike, Isaac will attempt to separate the front one at the hip-bones. If there is one that differs from the others, he'll go after that one, moving around a (hopefully) slower-moving lesser threat to get to the different one.

His attack(s) will be the same in either case. A horizontal power-slice to follow through-and-up, then cleave downward ...
-next rnd, this target or next- cut back the other way ...

This should be interesting, since their slowness and the speed factor of Isaac's weapon makes things about even, sorta ... ))

Subject: Noting the movements

It was too soon for the dampness -- dampness? More like permeating WET! -- to deeply affect the clothing, leathers, and metals he and the others wore but, as soon as possible, they would all have to get out of the mist, drizzle, and heat to treat and care for their exposed belongings before a more permanent damage set in. The more Isaac questioned the situation he and his companions currently found themselves in, the less likely it seemed, to him, that there was indeed a village ahead. He began to wonder if they should look for a cave or depressession to seek shelter in. But the group before them took precedence. He could not shake the feeling that they held information he and his fellow adventurers needed, however little it might be.

Noting the movements of some of the others toward the trees after voicing necesary caution, Isaac smiled yet again. Now do they show prudence. But he himself, along with Neri, seemed to have chosen the more direct route to the weary-seeming travelers ahead of them. He hoped that the others moving off the trail and into the trees would have the good sense to keep silent, but trusted them to do the right thing. They did not get where they were by being foolish. And Neri herself voiced the same concern that Isaac felt, that these others might require aid, and/or so might any villiage ahead, if there was one ahead. Hoping that he had not misunderstood her words, Isaac shook a bit more of the wet out of his hair and smiled a visible thanks to Neri.

Speaking softly to her and hoping his low-pitched voice wouldn't carry far, "Thanks, Neri. Shall we go see if these folk ahead need help? They may also be able to tell us if there is a town ahead -- Filwood or not. I begin to question the circumstances we find ourselves in. But we can do nothing about that which we know nothing about. And two pairs of ears will hear more information than one pair."

Subject: Isaac's own misgivings

Isaac wasn't sure himself what was going on. Hot usually meant a drier season in Filwood, and rain came usually during the cooler months. Seldom -- VERY seldom -- did the two converge in this manner. Just strange. And Isaac was feeling a little guilt that his estimate of the time it would take to get to Filwood had long since passed. The heat, drizzle, mist, and the ccompanying humidity made for miserable travel as far as he was concerned. But there was no cover save the nearby trees, and they themselves were soaked to dripping saturation by the seemingly-unending drizzle of rain and the heavy mist.

He was as certain as he could be that he had not taken a wrong turn. He knew this area, had grown up here. He had patrolled oirtions of it while serving as the local sheriff. While he had seen nothing to indicate that he and the party were on the wrong path to the village, the dimming light and the hanging mist that was soaking everything it could seep into was now casting doubts in his own mind as to their actual whereabouts.

Shianna's statement brought Isacc's doubts to crystal-clear certainty. Now that he knew that at least one other sensed his misgivings, he not longer felt guilty, he felt alert and wary. The small group ahead of them, dimly seen, could now be looked at with a new mindset. If a village were as near as Isaac had suspected, why would these others have ventured out into a drizzling mist instead of waiting it out in relative comfort at the Fin and Feather tavern? And their movement showed either weariness, weakness, injury, or illness. All the more reason for them not to be on the road in these conditions. Isaac feared now that Filwood was not where the party currently was. It was also very possible, in Isaac's mind, that these others had not passed through, or by, a town recently.

After a momentary pause, Aryan was the first to move. Not surprising, knowing her. She didn't seem to fit the image Isaac had of a cautiously careful wielder of magic. She seemed to have more of a warrior's attitude. Whether it was foolhardiness or simply a willingness to accept whatever came as a result of her actions, Isaac didn't know. But he hoped to find out before something dire happened to her -- or to the others -- as a result of her tendency toward "darting out". That hadn't happened -- yet. Isaac shook his head, smiling half at Aryan and half at his own musings. Why was he suddenly judging caution? His very profession was one where caution was prudent, but not the main concern, unless it applied to those he defended,

For his own part, Isaac hesitated only a moment before stepping out after her. As he did so, he unfastened the peace-tie on his sword but kept his hand on the hilt to hide the unfastened knot. His intention was to at least ask the others approaching them if they had indeed passed or seen a villiage nearby.

With an attempt at light humor he didn't really feel, "Fair enough, Aryan. Let's go see if I have been wasting our time chasing a non-existent home town that is intent on eluding us."
