Topic: New Spores of Itanlok ~ 1 ~ A Short Adventure in Audalis
Subject: Flying High

The gasping Khord drew her attention, and Niaou’li stopped thinking about turning the mushrooms into a bridge. When she saw the stone arm approaching the damp soil of the forest she herself stopped breathing for a few seconds, feeling an icy shiver crawling from her neck to her toes. She and her fellow Khords witnessed the terrifying limb, grabbing the male Khord, groping it’s huge, strong fingers around him, and pulling him away from the humid mushroom. The latter seemed to want to hang on to the Khord by creating thick cords of slime..

After seeing the arm taking the helpless Khord and disappearing into the sky the muggy peace in the forest returned. Niaou’li though felt a whirling turmoil inside of her, restless about this innocent man’s faith. What is going to happen to him? she wondered.. Where did this arm come from? she mused.
The whirling inside her became more intense with every thought. I’m the only one of us who can get up there, using my wildshape.. She turned swiftly to the others, saying "you can continue to try and make this bridge out of mushrooms, I’m going up there to try and find out what just happened."

She felt the whirling becoming like a warm rush, radiating splendid shades of blue and grey. A frenzy of bold thoughts, courage and will to get to know the truth took possession of the small druid. A light haze came out of nowhere, and she felt like she was swirling around on the inside. What seemed to be an eternity later turned out to have taken just a few seconds, and she looked at her figure being reflected in the oily surface of the black pool. She was looking in the eyes of a giant, splendid eagle, with grey feathers on its chest, dispersing to an intense shade of blue with some opal colored flares. It’s beak was of a bright orange, with fierce black linings. Look at me.. She took off from the ground, waving her broad wings, passing the dark hoods of even the biggest mushrooms and headed out into the dark. The swirling rush in her head continued. If this arm will attack me, I will try to evade it since I am way more maneuverable than this giant rock. She continued ascending, leaving the mushrooms and her companions far behind her. She was surrounded more and more by the darkness that clung to her wings, but she was determined to find out what was going on in Khordal…

OOC: Even if this phenomenon is long gone when I arrive at the ceiling of the cave, I will return to the black pool and tell the others about what I saw.

Hi guys!

I want to get my post in tonight (it's 20:41 h Italian time right now), since I'm leaving the city for a few days and won't be back 'till sunday evening.

Does anyone have like a Brilliant Idea he/she wants to share, or shall I continue my 'cut down the shrooms and use them as a bridge'-idea?

I liked Ayrn discussing our next step in the Q/A last week, lets continue this??

EDIT: Spelling...

Subject: Black Goo..

Niaou’li kept on walking, following the tracks and dodging the hats of mushrooms that slanted the path, haunted by the same image over and over again: the glazed look in the eyes of that Khordaldrum woman, lying on her back while staring into the dark above her while life seemed to be sucked out of her. Niaou’li was terrified by the gaping hole in her throat, wondering what phenomenon could have caused this type of horror. The smell of an extinguished fire had made her turn her head, beholding the other two khords that had passed away in the darkness of this forest.

While pondering the previous sight she heard Helengir say “I will follow these tracks over here” , summoning Crulgrin and Loco to come with her. She had noticed the tracked dents had split, one set was heading west while the other went south. Hellengir’s seemed like a good plan, splitting up would increase their chances of finding a clue about the whereabouts of the other children. Still she wondered what the tracks they were following were caused by.. were it drops of fluid? Were it the prints of an animal?..

As she was heading to the south with the others, she noticed the temperature was rising.. what could be causing this? A few feet in front of them the tracks lead into a big, black pool that could not remain unnoticed. It was frightening, black, oily and there was no telling whether it was 2 or 200 feet deep. The giant white, black hooded mushroom that was standing in the middle caused an even darker shadow over this day that should have been the best in the lives of two of their fellow Khords. Niaou’li was shocked by the sight of the bodies of 3 adults and 2 children, that were stuck on its surface.

She turned around, looking at the Khords that had remained in her group. She wanted to say something, when she saw Firenze at the rim. She must have escaped the backroom in the Spores and have followed them, for a deer like her it must be easy to maneuver through the overgrowth of mushrooms. “We should try to get to the middle of the pool, finding out if these Khords are still alive and if not, what caused their deaths!” She said. She tried to think of a way to get to the middle, without touching the dark fluids. “I could wildshape into an eagle and get over there, but then my companions will remain here.. There are four of us.. together we can take one of the giant mushrooms down, using it as a bridge.” But how do we know what will happen if the mushroom touches the pool? she thought. Whatever had caused these tracks, the answer could be hiding out in the darkness of the lake..

She went to the rim of the forest, where Firenze was standing. She picked a nice, thick mushroom that was not too big, and took some rope out of her bag. She tied a tight knot around the mushroom, leaving about 6 feet of rope to hold on to. She swung her creation around her head, throwing it in the direction of the pool, making sure not to let go of the other end of the rope. “Let’s see what happens to this shroom..”

I've got 50ft of rope.

After brainstorming with Loki:

I could cast a Warp Wood spell, making a wooden bridge out of some mushrooms.

Or we can simply cut a path around the pool, though then we cannot reach the boulder and the 5 khords. But there must be an easy way to find out if they are dead or not. Getting to the boulder would be nice so we can look for traces.

Subject: My thoughts

What's the soil in the cave like? 'cause maybe something is dripping down from the ceiling, leaving the small pointed marks? This could be an explaination for the "Flesh had been eaten away by a foul substance". Maybe it is some kind of poison, of an animal that killed the other two khords that are lying dead on the floor aswell?

Almerin, you wrote that "The bodies of these two men were cut up". Are these fine (humanish?) cuts or are they more like torn apart?

We can try to throw some smaller fungusses in the black pool, to find out what happens. Will they melt away..? If not, together we can take down one of the big fungusses, place it over the pool (just from the edge to the boulder in the middle) and use it as a bridge.

Just my thoughts.. ^^

* oh, in the last lines is written "with a black top that leaked dark drops of sludge that fell into the pool below with thick thuds" . The substance can be dripping off the other shrooms aswell, instead of the ceiling. What do you think?

Subject: The direction of the scream

Crulgrin had detected a lot of prints of really tiny shoes. A lot of Khordaldrum children must have been walking here! Niaou’li thought by herself. She followed him when he was tracking the other prints, and he brought them deeper into the forest of mushrooms. Niaou’li hold her torch very tight, afraid it would fall down and extinguish, leaving her surrounded by darkness. She got carried away by her thoughts for a moment, but put herself in order and rushed back to the friendly orange glow that was left by the torches of her companions. The air was humid, and Niaou´li tried not to slip over the moist little mushrooms that were growing like a cloth on the damp soil.

Suddenly there was some kind of turmoil amidst the group. They had noticed the intensifying tracks, and Niaou´li felt as if they were getting closer to their goal. At the same time she noticed a penetrating smell. It was the smell of fungus, the one that would only get worse every foot they set further into the darkness, surrounded by the giant stems and overshadowed by broad, dark hoods. Suddenly she noticed a small field where the ground where a struggle seemed to have taken place. At first it looked like any other place where someone had been fighting, but when she took a closer look she noticed all of the little dents in the loose earth. What could that be? Niaou’li thought by herself. It looks like someone has been wildly dancing around here with some kind of walking cane.. The group decided to follow these tracks as well, since there was no other sign of the children around. Niaou’li followed the dents, meanwhile trying to get rid of the insects that were buzzing around her ear and flying around their heads, and together with the looming mushrooms this made her feel a little strange.

She was startled by a loud scream, a female Khordaldrum voice that was filled with fright. A second scream tried to find its way through the darkness, but somewhere lost its track and disappeared in thin air. A light was moving in the distance, but faded away very soon. “Something must be going on, let’s swiftly but silently head towards the direction of the screams!” she said to the others. “We are not sure if the dented track will lead to the kids, and this could be a really good lead. Let’s find ourselves an orientation point on the horizon, because we have to go right through the mushrooms, or we risk being too late!” she encouraged her companions.

Subject: The rational decision ;)

Niaou’li observed the curious group that had formed around Thagovan. Since they were on a very important quest that they had to bring to an end as a group, they had been introduced to each other.

She found herself accompanied by Crellin, who she heard had magically cleaned up the kid from a distance, Crulgrin, who she had not seen earlier this evening but was who suddenly seemed really eager to join the group, Helengir, the impressive female warrior that she had seen earlier taking care of the child when Niaou’li was on her way out of the spores, Baldorf, who did not seem to be really fond of his new occupation but, considering the puppy love that lied in her eyes, the girl that was standing behind him was and last but not least Loco, who Niaou’li still found hard to see through.

Niaou’li held the wooden torch that was given to her, which could attract some lost children. The warm orange light reflected on the stalactites in the cave, and made the place a little less sinister than it seemed before, when she was standing there by herself.

The group started moving forward, into the forest, crossing the old path that was made centuries ago by her ancestors. She saw the different forms, colours and species of the funguses, she had not noticed the variety before. Some seemed very familiar to her, others were the kinds of mushrooms she had only seen in books so far. She felt favored seeing the real ones, but in the meantime the dark shadow of the children being gone made the entire forest a lot less pleasurable.. The threatening that came from some of the mushrooms made her walk a little closer to the rest of the group.

After walking in the forest for a short time without saying a word to each other, they got to a cross-road. The path split into three smaller lanes, which all seemed the same. The group hesitated for a while, not knowing which direction to go. Baldorf was the first one to say anything. “I say we take the middle one!”.

To Niaou’li that seemed like some random choice though.. She had not been able to find any leads like drops of blood or footprints around the Spores, but maybe one of the others was capable of finding any tracks this time? “Somebody should look for some traces of the children before we make our decision” she suggested.

Subject: The fungus forest ...

When she was mounting the whirling stairs, Niaou’li almost collided with this huge Khordaldrum warrior. She saw the bright light at the top of the stairs reflect in the axe that was strapped to his leather belt, and his look was severe and really unsuitable for the festivities he would have been thinking he was entering. He looked at her as if he wanted an explanation for something. With a heavy voice he asked her “Why is it so quiet down there? Is the party over?”. Then he glanced at the room and must have seen the aged man trying to hold himself up on the table and chuckled. “No… don’t tell me. It’s that old Mugtwister’s turn to speak, isn’t it? That’s why everybody shut up.”

Niaou’li was in a hurry and had no time to explain what had happened, so she pointed to the crowd that had gathered around the boy and near the stairway while saying “Please let me pass! There could still be some evidence outside!” and she kept climbing upwards.

When she abandoned the Spores, her eyes had to adjust to the darkness outside. At first it was difficult to distinguish the different forms in the dark, but soon she could see about 60 feet in front of her and saw the enormous surrounding cavern. There were long brownish plants coming down from the ceiling and in front of her there were a lot of green-greyish types of moss. She continued exploring the surroundings of the spores, and found some drops of blood near the entrance. Furthermore there was some fungus that she had not seen before, but there were so many types of fungus growing in the forest that this did not surprise her. Strangely enough though, that was the only trace she could find so far. Sometimes the truth lays hidden behind the obvious.. She kept remembering this phrase, that had been taught to her many years ago.

I’ve passed this place a thousand times already, but something feels different.. It was only then when she noticed the silence. There used to be always the sound of the Rospi, grimy toad like creatures that lived during the night and fed on the fungus in the forest and who’s breathing makes an awful noise. Tonight though, Niaou’li did not hear one Rospo, and that made her concerned. She took the Grent’yl book out of her leather travel sack, the one she always took with her because you never knew when you were going to need it.

I know I have seen something in this book about the Rospi… Ah, there it was, in the first section of the book, with the olive green borders around the pages with small medieval like drawings of plants and animals in the corners: Rospo (plural: Rospi, Khordaldrum): Gray amphibian, mostly found in the fungus forest. Rospi are known for their ability to reproduce just once in a lifetime. Therefore they have a great sense of danger, and choose basic surroundings to live and nourish their young. Niaou’li thought about what had been said by the people in the spores; that the boy seemed to have acid burns on his body. Would all the Rospi have left the fungus forest? Then something really serious must be going on!

Instantly she felt a certain threat, she did not feel that safe anymore all by herself in the obscurity of the night.. She turned around and went to the entrance of the Spores, which was like this big hole in the ground, surrounded by some vegetating creatures of nature. She was just about to descend the stairs again, when she heard a noise coming from downstairs. Chaos seemed to have broken loose, and she heard Thagovan, the Khordaldrum warrior she met on the stairs on her way out, shouting “STOP! Stop this panic at once!” The crowd reacted enraged and wanted to get out of the spores in large numbers. As if it were a miracle, Burrowfolk managed to calm down the mass and Thagovan proposed to form a group of warriors to find the young Khords.

Niaou’li descended the stairs, where Thagovan was standing halfway: broad-shouldered and confident. She wanted to tell him about the Rospi-phenomenon outside, and cleared her throat. “I want to join your group of warriors, I have already examined the surroundings of the spores a little. Let me tell you about what I just discovered when I was outside..”

Topic: New Spores of Itanlok ~ 1 ~ A Short Adventure in Audalis
Subject: So far for the festivities..

Niaou’li was enjoying every single moment of this wonderful evening. She loved the back corner of the Spores, where the games were held. She was not really fond of playing herself, but she loved to stand by and see the others enjoy the party. She loved the way the smiths competed with each other, she especially liked the goldsmiths because they had this intense glance in their eyes when trying to outdo the others, a look you could not compare with any other kind of emotion but one you would remember your whole life and that makes you feel like you’re at home. She liked this feeling, it had lacked in her life for a very long time..

When beholding the Ale-Tugging, she could not help laughing on the inside. She liked the various methods these men came up with just to get to the beer. Of course there was the collaborating between two so called rivals by walking from one mug to the other, but the game was more fun to her when one man managed to empty both mugs or when one of the spectators decided it has taken long enough and decided to finish the golden brew by his of herself.

When taking in all of the festivities, she felt a heavy weight on one of her shoulders. She turned around to see by whom it had been elicited, and looked into the chuckling face of Avulgard Brundo. Avulgard was the patron of the Spores, and has been a friend of Niaou’li for a very long time already. Before she started working at the archives they used to go on these little trips into the woodlands, to find herbs and berries she could use for her healing and he could use for his exquisite brews. She had often asked him to give her the recipe of the mixtures, but he had refused every single time saying “if you’d know the methods of preparation, it will never more be as delicious as before”. She greeted him with a hearty smile, asking if he were having such a good time as well. “O yeah, it’s such a privilege to be a part of this wedding!”, he responded. “I heard you were the one who suggested the use of my tavern as the place for this weddingparty? I suppose I should thank you. Maybe I can start by finding a quieter spot for your companion here?” and he pointed at Firenze. “I have a room behind the bar where he could stay”.

Niaou’li was very grateful and started leading Firenze to the bar. The poor deer seemed overwhelmed by all the attention, the cheering and dancing people and she might even have had a sip of the puddle of ale, that came into being between the bundles of hay on the floor. Avulgard opened the door of the backroom, that was not really big but really cozy because of the moderate light, the beautiful paintings on the walls, the furnished chairs and the small round table in the center of the room , made out of oak with decorations of leaves and small plants on every single one of the three table-legs. The room had something mysterious about it, something Niaou’li couldn’t place.

In the corner of the room there was a small red-brownish couch, which Firenze really seemed to like since she jumped on it and immediately fell in a really deep sleep. Niaou’li smiled and when following Avulgard out of the room something in the little closet next to the couch drew her attention. It were some paper scrolls, bound together by an olive green satin ribbon, with a red seal on it. It weren’t the scrolls that drew Niaou’li’s attention, they were probably just order forms for the numerous sorts of Khord beer, but it was the seal that was attached to the ribbon. I know I have seen this logo before… but where..? She noticed Avulgard waiting for her in the doorway, slipped the papers in the pocket of her cloth and followed him.

When they came out of the room she noticed nothing but whispering. There was a stifling perception in the room, when making her way through all of the guests, that seem to have gathered at the entrance of the spores. “did you see that?!” an old lady rustled to her nearby friend, “who was that?” Niaou’li heard Vindrun Olbrad ask his twin brother Nurdiv, “How could anything like this have happened?” she heard a frightened man say and she saw this little girl with blonde dainty hair crying in her mother’s lap. The atmosphere of total happiness and joy that prevailed in the tavern before, had changed suddenly. Niaou’li kept following Avulgard, who was walking towards the whirling stairway to find out what had caused the sudden damper on the festivities in his inn.

When they had almost reached their destination she saw Loco, kneeling on the floor, with some kind of purple fungus in his hands. She thought she had seen the stuff before, in one of the dusty jars in the cabinet of the old lady in Verbyn, but she was not sure. [knowledge nature check]. When Loco bent over to the left to soak the handful of purpleness in a stale mug she shuddered. “Kith-Jora! What has happened here?!” she stumbled. She saw this little boy, lying on the floor, all covered in blood and burns. It was Govarund, one of the sons of Manula, one of the children Dirlan used to tell stories to every Friday, when he took care of some Khordaldrum children.

She saw ‘Loco’ Fungihammer taking care of the boy’s wounds and saw an impressive female Khord assisting him, or maybe she was just preventing him from doing any more harm, and Niaou’li did not want to create any more commotion by interfering. Instead, she mounted the stairway to see if outside there was any kind of a lead to what had happened to the little fellow. Swiftly she left the spores, when hearing Loco promising something about the responsible person having to answer to him..

Subject: The Lady Druid..

Niaou’li had been preparing for this wedding weeks in advance. She found the perfect blue dress, with some waving layers of fabric at the back end. It fitted great with her eyes, glowing the magic that you find near the most beautiful well in springtime. She had been trying out all different kinds of foods with Belfida, and yesterday she spent hours in the kitchen to make sure not one Khord would leave the party saying it lacked anything. She even suggested the perfect place for the wedding to the orehands; in her opinion the Spores was one of the most amazing bars ever, though it was not as nice as the Wander, the bar she used to attend in Verbyn… times long gone..
Such a nice party this has become! Ah, Befilda and Kretarund are coming this way.

“You know, Niaou’li,” Befilda started, “we’re so glad you’re here to feast with us.” Niaou’li hugged her friend and was about to do the same to Kretarund, when she saw the disapproving expression he tried to hide with a grim smile. “But you really shouldn’t have brought that Sylvari …thing in here” finished Kretarund. Not again… why does he always have to complain about Firenze? He is a wonderful man, but when he starts drinking.. “Don’t mind him. He’s had a bit too much.” Befilda winked at her friend. “Too much? This is our wedding! There is no ‘too much’ in a wedding. If I could I would get one of those tubes up my arm for an Ale pranstrusion or waddisitcalled, I would do it!” her husband mumbled.

Niaou’li saw the newlyweds stumble towards the other side of the room, and couldn’t help overhearing Kretarund say he was having the best wedding a Khord could wish for. She felt a warm glow inside of her. Though she was not sure if it was caused by the precious moment of her childhood friend getting married to the love of her life or by the aromatic substance that came out of the ocean green transparent bottle, given to her by the old, grayish bartender with the most friendly eyes she had ever seen. She was lost in thought for just a few minutes, when she was bluntly brought back to the present by Dirlan, the young Khord that used to take care of Firenze when Niaou’li was working late. She had a job at the archives of Khordal, where she used to rewrite ancient manuscripts about the woodlands in Antaron with the phoenix feather that was hidden in the thick leather cover of the Grent’yl book.

“Shouldn’t you feed Firenze?”, Dirlan asked. Niaou’li told him that she had already fed her before entering the Spores. “By the way, do you realize how hard it can be to get a deer down these whirling flight of stairs?! It took me like half an hour!” She caressed the warm fuzzy back of her deer to comfort her. She was very attached to Firenze, and did not even like others but Dirlan riding her. That’s why she felt a little uncomfortable when she noticed 'Loco' Fungihammer staring at her as if he had just found a really good friend. Don’t mind him, he probably already had too much of our famous Khord beer or so... “I am going to take in the festivities, will you join me?” Niaou’li asked Dirlan. He replied: “I’d like to, but I promised the Orehands to help them prepare the gem-throwing!” “Oh, such an honour! Break a leg, but join me later this evening for a drink okay?” and she mixed with the other guests.
