Topic: Why the "newbies" don't stick around
Subject: My two cents

A dusty novel hmmm. Some aspects to the site seem dusty. You've all created a wonderful setting in Audalis but there currently isn't a live Audalis game. On the other hand there are not so dusty elements to the site. I was recently invited to join people in Chat. I still have the PM for it. I admit I didn't join because I wasn't really on at the time. Sorry for that. I've also seen since I started 3-4 games go from recruiting to game thread, and one idea thread that has gotten a lot of comments. Of course this is balanced in my newbie mind by the game I was most excited to join not quite launching. Sigh. As far as figuring out how to keep a game going....that is a bit tricky, but it doesn't seem impossible. I've been reading through other games and it seem Tann has a bit of the secret in Trilogy. That seems to be a game that has been going on for a while. It isn't the only one either. Though I admit I haven't seen any games that have actually closed. Maybe the answer is more into that instant gratification thing. If you have a great group with a proven reputation for staying and struggling through an epic campaign then give them something for the years but for those others of us maybe a single adventure or two. Just something to make a cool character and either get it killed or rich quick. I've found in tabletop you have groups that are just better rolling a new character every couple of months. Guess it all depends on the story the group ends up wanting to write. A mod running chat would be interesting. The blogs and webcomics are cool. There's a lot of potential for both instant gratification and quality gratification on this site. Some of it is going as best it can considering the factors, other bits of it aren't being utilized fully. But on that note Olan did make a call for creative people to help bring dust off some of those elements that have fallen into decline.

Subject: Who's your sugar daddy?

As the strange man's lips brushed against her hand Jenra felt a flutter of excitement. Tryean's words flowed heavy with accent but it was a charming accent and Jenra found that she wanted to listen to more of it and to dissect the speech patterns. Back home speech was musical but hearing an Eladrin speak was like hearing a robin sing, and all robin's sing the same song. Listening to the speech patterns in the material plane was like hearing a cacophony of birdsong. Tryean's speech was like listening to a macaw.

A quest of knowledge. Jenra thought with excitement. Is there any better reason to quest? And a quest of knowledge it would certainly be as Jenra had never heard of much of what he was talking of and what little she had heard of was more myth and legend and history than truth. She'd heard of goblins and orcs but never seen them. She'd heard of the Western Continent; great tales of human achievement but again she'd never been there. She'd never heard of Rog though. Even in Jeremy's tales of grand adventure, he'd never mentioned Rog. The opportunity to go somewhere so foreign was almost exactly what she was looking for. Surely they would have strange and new magics for her to discover and master. Jenra almost silenced the man and agreed to the terms of the journey just thinking of the possible discoveries, when he let slip the price he was willing to pay. Four platinum was a lot, and it would fund quite a few experiments Jenra wanted to try. It was certainly more than Jeremy ever made on his wild adventures. Though I must wonder what the other man knew that would make him turn down such an outlandish payout.

"I'll join your expedition." Jenra said attempting not to seem to eager. "Though I must wonder, if Rog is a land cut off, how do you know it is safer than it seems? Will this be an exploratory or diplomatic mission? Who will benefit from the knowledge we will gain on this mission?" The last question was the most important to Jenra. One of the biggest difference's between Eladrin and Humans was the duplicity of Humans. They were quite proven to be able to launch a worthwhile expedition that benefited some dark and nefarious organization. Jenra had sworn no matter what that her knowledge and power was not to be used for evil gains.

Kera's hand slid toward her sword as her gut rolled telling her that trouble was about to begin. She was facing the wrong way as the mage called out the first opponent and lifted himself into the air. She heard his yell but didn't know any of the players, this however was dispelled as she saw another man racing towards one of the buildings and yelling at another man. That must be Dharem She thought as the new man leaped from his building onto the next one. Then the crowd hit her. It was like a tsunami smacking into a swimmer used to swimming in lakes. Kera stepped back to dodge the first panicked crowder only to step on a second as she quickly stepped to regain balance a third bumped into her ramming her into yet a fourth, and to really put her behind she tripped on someone else's leg and hit the floor. With a growl Kera fought to pick herself back up. It was a momentous feat considering the amount of feet. After about a minute of being trampled Kera decided to stop being nice. She grabbed one fellow's leg and jerked. He knocked into another person and it was dominos from there, but in the chaos of the falling mob Kera regained her feet. Reassessing the situation Kera found the building that the mage was on burning. The Councilor of Magic fallen with a strange man collapsed over him and the mage who called out the original warning attempting some spell that seemed to be working with marginal effect, and the second man seemingly lost in the crowd. Unsure of the situation with the councilor Kera chose to act on the situation that was very evident. She slung her shield over her shoulder and raced for the burning building. Always running towards what everyone else is running away from Kera thought as she dodged a lady carrying her child running away from the action spurred on by a call of "In Here". Kera bunched her shoulder and ducked her head as she hit the door without slowing bursting it open. She took only a moment to look around and realize the caller was on the top floor.

"I'm coming to help." Kera called up. "Keep talking if you can." Kera raced up the stairs listening to the cries of 'In Here' to direct her. She attempted to open the door the cries seemed to be behind but it was blocked by debris.

"Step back from the door if you're able" Kera yelled through the door as she drew her sword. She began hacking huge chunks out of the door praying that she wasn't also hacking huge chunks out of her would be rescuee. As the door and the debris behind it splintered Kera kicked away what was left and entered the room. She immediately saw injured Dharem and the unconscious mage.

" Hi, I'm Kera. Can you walk?" Kera asked walking toward them and noting the nasty gash in Dharem's leg. "I'll take the mage but I'm unsure I can carry both of you so if you can't I'll come back for you." She grabbed the mage's arms and hefted him somewhat ungently onto her back. He'll need a healer anyways and speed is more important than gentleness. With the mage secure on her back Kera made her way careful not to joust him to bad while still moving with the urgency only a burning building can generate out of the building.

Subject: Kera Interrun intro

Kera strolled into town Jason Urgeet in front of her and her sword pressed firmly against his back. There was blood staining his shirt where Kera had made it obvious that she was quite willing to inflict pain on her prisoner. None of the cuts were very deep since the bounty had clearly stated that he was to be brought back alive, but as she’d pointed out that didn’t mean he needed his arms or fingers. He did still have all of those but there were evident cuts in his back that would probably need a physician to look at. It wasn’t Kera’s concern whether he lived or died past delivery and delivery was happening now. A contingent of the guard was on its way to meet her and pick up her charge. The current gateguard was signing all the necessary paperwork.

“Kera Interrun?” A tall man wearing chainmail and a tabard with the symbol of Tithuana embroidered on it asked as he approached. There were four other similarly dressed individuals behind him.

“Yes.” Kera answered after a minute remembering the false surname she had given. It was always a little tricky coming back to Tithuana. She always hoped the guardsman she was dealing with wasn’t her brother, and didn’t recognize her. Tithuana was a large city and therefore required a large guard so it would ordinarily be easy for a person to vanish within the crowd except Kera wasn’t really just anyone. She tried to be since running away she’d cut herself off from her family, but if they ever found her then she was afraid they’d undo the cut off. And her family were wealthy and therefore powerful merchants in this very city. So coming home was always just a bit tricky. Kera lucked out this time, again. The guardsman that was in charge of this group looked like a recent promotion and he’d probably never even heard of the sixteen year old who’d run away with a fellow guardsman’s sword a few years back.

There was a chance her own brother would not recognize the woman standing with her sword pressed against a brigand’s back and casually taking payment for his bounty despite his cries of innocence these past few days. Her raven black hair falling to the center of her back, and her hourglass frame encased in steel. The sheath to the sword she stole from the guardsman hanging easily at her left hip, and a steel shield, with her personal symbol of a bloody sword with a crossguard of manacles, painted on it tied to her left arm. The 5’7 woman was striking in her beauty if only she’d smile, but that was a luxury neither the guardsman nor the bounty he was taking off her hands would see.

“Jason Urgeet.” The guardsman said regarding the man and his captor with respect. “You are under arrest for crimes against the city of Tithuana. You will come with us.” The guardsman grabbed Jason by the arm and Kera undid his manacles. Another guardsman stepped up and applied new manacles and the two dragged the sobbing convict away. Kera didn’t even cast a sideways glance at the drama. She’d seen it before and would see it again. Instead she entered the town.

With that job done it’s time to find a new one, and perhaps something to eat. She wasn’t really hungry. Truthfully she was rarely hungry but she knew that a body needed to eat to continue to function and so she ate every once in a while. The stress of entering this city had robbed her of any appetite. I should have dropped off my bounty and gone to the next town. She thought as she attempted to look as if she belonged and yet use her hair to hide her face at the same time. It wasn’t an easy task and she may have failed if anyone was taking notice anyways. But except for her father and brother Tithuana probably didn’t even remember her. Chances were that the lord she was supposed to marry that had caused her to run away in the first place was probably already married. And probably to a prettier face too Kera sighed. This is silly. I would feel better if I just left town. I know I’m being paranoid but knowing doesn’t change it.

Yet it was also folly to leave town without a job, especially since there was a little voice nagging at her that there was a major event and therefore major money somewhere in Tithuana. That little voice had never failed her and it kept her feet moving inexorably towards the city square as if she couldn’t break from the mob she’d somehow found herself following. The city square was crowded and decked out for some event.

I wonder what’s going on. Kera thought perking up from her dark thoughts to see what the excitement was about. She casually watched the square’s crowd. People had always fascinated Kera, and there was little more fascinating than watching the ‘mob effect’ Kera had noticed that people began to act like everyone else when you got a large group together, but if you watched then the more self aware also managed to create a bubble where from an outside dynamic they were a part of the mob but from inside the bubble they were individuals doing business as if they were on an empty street. Kinda like the group by the wall that seemed to be preparing for an operation, handing potions around to each other and talking while watching the crowd themselves.

Well isn’t that interesting? Kera thought making her way mostly subtly towards the group. That little voice that nagged had drawn a connection between this group and whatever job it seemed to sense. It didn’t make any sense, and she didn’t have a reason to care what this group did, but then again gut feelings rarely met the requirements of logic. Every so often she’d glance at the two people who were having a knowledge dual. Foolish showing off. To imagine someone pays them to sit and do nothing but learn these useless facts. She was a few feet away from the group that had caught her interest when the dual ended and for some reason the air in the square seemed to grow more tense. Kera’s hand slid towards her sword and she scanned the crowd not quite knowing what she was searching for; just knowing that her gut said something was about to go down and this group would be in the middle of it and it would only profit her to also be in the middle of it.

Subject: Lights on, curtain up, I've forgotten my lines so I'm gonna do improv

Jenra breathed in deep, smelling the salty air rising from the ocean. The human world was so different from her old home. Such differences though were why she was here. The elders were wrong. There is much to learn from the younger race. Jenra poked her face into a vendor’s window. Those shoes are cute. She skipped further along the streets. It was a pretty day. Few clouds dotted the air, but the sun seemed to be keeping it’s warmth to itself. The cold didn’t bother Jenra overly much. It wasn’t comparable to a cold day in her native lands. Besides one never learns anything if they let minor things like temperature deter them. Jenra turned down a street, Platinum Dirt Road, it was where the gate guard had said most of the inns and taverns were. Jeremy had said that adventure was most likely to be found in an inn or tavern, and if it wasn’t there then someone who knew where to find it would be. Jenra stood for a minute staring down the street. But which one? They all looked pretty much the same, a sign dangling from a pole in front with one animal or another painted on it and a few drunks coming in and out. Not the most appealing of places to be sure, but Jeremy said they were the place to join adventuring parties, and he was the professional.

*SLAM* A door banged open on one of the taverns. Probably a drunk. Jenra thought Well since they all look the same I suppose one will be as good as the other. She almost simply stepped around the two humans having their disagreement when she couldn’t help but over hear their conversation.

"-that I had a wife and children, and as such was rather attached to my life? Go find some other madman to take you up on your offer. I'm a mercenary, not a fool." The voice obviously belonged to a local whereas the person he addressed was equally obviously not local. The local slammed his way back into the tavern leaving the foreigner on the street alone.

What sort of offer was so insane that it would prompt someone to escort another outside of a public establishment? Jenra looked at the foreigner. He was an interesting fellow. He stood staring after the other man with a look of regret. Regret or worry. Jenra thought noting the way his brow knotted. He was a slightly well dressed man which immediately gave him marks in Jenra’s consideration since most of the humans of this port town were dressed much as one would expect a working man to be dressed. It wasn’t that Jenra disapproved of the practical way a working man dressed but she had noted that the working man was slightly undereducated and her encounters with superstition amongst humans didn’t rank highly on her reasons to like humans list. The man carried a small sword that looked as though finesse was more valuable in its wielding than strength would be.

Not that he needs any other weapon Jenra thought as she watched him. There was something about him that bespoke of magic. It wasn’t the mastered level of magic that even a young wizard such as Jenra exuded but there was definitely some magic easily detectable about the man.

"Avandra pity my misfortune in this land, and grant me greater luck in my future travels..." The man prayed quietely, but easily audibly, before turning to look at Jenra, finally. It wasn't hard to see how she gained his attention, Eladrin tend to generate interest, even so close to the City of Moonstair-so known for its portals into the Feywild.Definitely worry, but not so dire Jenra decided as the man walked up to her. He seemed to come to a decision and judging from the encounter Jenra had just observed it wasn’t hard to determine the sort of decision he might have come to. He thinks I’ll be his fool that the other man wouldn’t

"Forgive my forwardness. I am Tryaen Creek, scholar of Arvale. I did not expect to see an Eladrin on the coast. May I presume you to be a wizard? I find myself in dire need of someone of magical prowess..."

I guess he was right. The idea that this man needed someone of magical prowess was almost an unspoken promise of magical secrets being revealed in the midst of whatever quest he was proposing. Of course it may have just been a line since it wasn’t exactly difficult to determine Jenra’s interests, but she’d come for a quest and now one was being presented to her. Sometimes being just naïve enough to buy a line led to a good time.
Jenra extended her hand allowing this charming scholar to kiss it. “I am Jenra, and yes I am a wizard. How may I aid you?”

I think it's at the beginning of the IceWind Dale Trilogy Compendium or the Dark Elf Trilogy Compendium. The big one with all three books in it. He talks about how he wanted Wulfgar as the main character of IceWind Dale and then Drizzt stole the spotlight third page in. At the end of that note he mentions that he gets the question whether or not he ever played Drizzt and in fact he has not. It's in one of those books. Salvatore writes very personal while still being business author's notes.

Dragonlance on the other hand played out the Chronicles then branched out into non played books that expanded on character backgrounds and new parties. I think they even played with a couple of the new parties but I know they played through the Chronicles (Tanis, Riverwind, Goldmoon, Raistlin, Caramon, Tika, Tasslehoff, Flint, Sturm, Laurana). Tracy Hickman was the DM and wrote the character sheets but the players brought them to life.

As far as allusions and or examples go you might want to take an extensive look through Norse Mythology. I've heard some pretty good arguments that modern fantasy is based on Tolkien and his books are based off Norse Mythology.

And someone may have converted Drizzt into a legendary npc but Salvatore has said that he's never played Drizzt and doesn't intend to in one of his author's notes.

Looks like you have a good beginning. Though I think an important note should be that Drizzt was never converted to tabletop play. R.A. Salvatore never wrote a character sheet for him. Maybe a better example would be the Dragonlance Chronicles which are a record of their game sessions. Or did I misunderstand the point?
