Whatyu talkin' 'bout Tiamat? Ray is obviously just talking about Dalana and Faustus... mayhaps you're seeing things?

Just as a side note... Don't point out the flaws in your own artwork Jing, because I wouldn't have picked up on those flaws if you hadn't pointed them out.

Sure, being able to reflect on your own work is a strength that allows you to improve, but my advice is to not point it out to the readers. You're your own worst critic.

I haven't been accused of having class in a long time, or good taste for that matter. I let both of them go after they started nagging that I wasn't listening. Me and the lowest common denominator however, we're practically siamese twins.

A dirty mind is a joy forever... so I'm not going to point out how Faustus is holding that big, rigid, long sword of his.

A toast, to a long and productive run! When is the next update?

I'm terrible at writing puns, and I do mean terrible.

I wouldn't get any further than having him say: "Ice to meet you" (McBain!)

Topic: Loaded Dice: the Guardian, part eight
Subject: and with that the deed is done

Some thoughts:

I wanted to start the whole thing with a bit of a misdirection, as I mentioned before. Hinting that the whole thing is obviously meta.

I then went with a straight story, avoiding comedic elements as best I could, a bit of snark doesn't count, or shouldn't count. But every short story has a twist, and with the first twist being impossible to revisit, the whole "she's really his mother in the real world", I had to think up of something unexpected.

So when the last pages came rolling out I had two heroes on their knees, and just introduced a third. So I figured, why not reference the game element in a way that should be recognizable to the readers?

Originally it was Dalana who would break character together with Jhim, since they were both late to the battle, it would have translated in both being late to the game itself, and then Faustus breaking character by pointing out they just broke character and it should cost them XP.

But Olan pointed out that Dalana was the least likely to break character, so I had to make some adjustments. I wondered about having Faustus break character, but it wouldn't make sense, he got beaten to a bloody pulp. I wondered if I could have him walk away with the glory, boasting that it was him who did the job, but it didn't feel right and I felt it wouldn't have been as big a break from the character and its player, so the effect of a player commenting through his character would have been lost. So it turned out to be Jhim to break character, after all he was the one who did the heavy lifting to speak, and with an impossible feat that could easily be blamed on a motherloving excellent couple of throws.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Having Faustus and Dalana be all bitter about Jhim saving their sorry asses by being utterly awesome and then bragging about it feels like a natural conclusion to the story.

Well after this one, we're entering the last leg of the story.

Looking back on the art I can see the differences between this one and the first one. Which is surprising, since I pretty much drew them all back to back... maybe it's me getting more comfortable with the colours and the characters, maybe it's the linework that's gelling with the colours a bit better, maybe it's something else entirely.

As for the story, like I said earlier, I set the first one up as a bit of misdirection, only to play it straight afterwards. Like Olan said, this isn't going to be part of Loaded Dice canon, and you'll see why not in the upcoming pages.

I took some liberties with the fact that it's still a game being played, where victory and defeat are decided by a roll of the dice.

well after the drama of facebook, I should explain a bit...

I was only a tiny bit bummed out, because I got the impression that people were like "it's filler we don't care" but that's the thing about impressions they can be wrong.

As for the story thus far. Someone mentioned in the first strip that they thought it was about Faustus sneaking past his mom to go an play DnD... that's intentional, I wanted to give the distinct impression that it would go in that direction.

Toy with the idea of a pretty standard, almost cliché story, and then play it straight.

Well the thing is done, I handed in the remaining pages, so for the next 8 installments you can blame me for ruining your favorite characters.

But seriously, I love feedback and constructive criticism like Lohan loves her crack.
