In regards to a Kender mage...

I have just finished reading the Dragonlance trilogy, and I believe in this book is the 'Red Dragon Inn' and also, more relevantly, involves Kenders. It was my impression that Kenders are very much like Halflings, so I am sure I can create a Halfling wizard/sorcerer for you.

I think a wizard would be best, as they tend to be a bit more 'bumbly' than sorcerers. As for roleplay feel free to play him as a Kender i.e very curious and irritating to the other players, however, he is not fearless!

Thanks very much for your help Ayrn!

Subject: A brief history of Pvt. Boris

Borislav Zablosky had been an exploratory teenager, that was before the war. He enjoyed the outdoors and would often walk through his local woods or village, always curious to find new exciting places and objects. When the war had begun however he had always been locked up inside whether it was at his school or in his house.

As his 17th birthday approached and school was finishing he soon realised the only way to get back outside was to join the Russian military as a conscript.

It was his Birthday, July 14th 1942, and his best present was the signing up form as a private in the army, he would be outside again!

Subject: An initial Idea

Hammer I am afraid I am one step ahead. I have just finished my first draft of 'the beginning.'

Okay so I have been thinking of a storyline and hook Tell me what you think...

The town of Durloch is a trading post, where only the bravest, or greediest, traders come. It lies on the North Eastern border with the country of Sendria. The surrounding land is often ravaged by the mad abominations that pour out of Sendria often led by a potent magic user, crazy with their lust for power.

Durloch is situated on the opposite side of the Thrace River and Daviena castle is within view, but only on a clear day. There are many fields around the settlement, fertile because of their closeness to a large water source. These fields are tended by small homesteads with small families living on each one.

There is a heavy military presence, and the town guard is almost threefold of what it should be, this is due to the fact it lies so close to the horrors of Sendria. The name 'Town' Guard may be a misleading term in Durlochs circumstances, as they do not only protect the town but also the outlying ranches and smaller villages. Durloch is considered to many of southern Ertanians as the front-line of defence from such Abominations.

Okay, there is a quick intro to the land and setting which your heroes live in.

Next, is about your party and a rough plan of how I am thinking the game should be played, but as I stated previously it is your choice!

To start with, you have just enlisted into the 'Town' Guards (the only thing I will decide for your character) There are many new recruits, whether they be noble volunteers, those who need or job or prisoners sent to guard a township, that is up to you!

The, 4 – 6, of you have been assembled into Command 463 and have been given first pick of duties.

The available Missions are:

Patrol town for a week, Guard the walls, stop petty crime etc... (This may also be away of finding more out about the area you live in, and ultimately a way out of the guards if you such desire)

Investigate an unnatural disturbance at Castle Daviena, the locals around the area have heard a mysterious wailing after dark and a strange fog has been oozing out of the castle gates.

Homestead Patrol, Travel around the surrounding area talking to farmers and finding out about any rumours or disturbances, you will be required to sleep in the open, unless you can find a kind soul to give you the stables for the night.

Guard duty at a small hamlet on the very border of Sendria. Each time you visit a new place it will appear on a zoomed in map of Ertain.

I hope this at least captures your Imagination a little and remember you are raw recruits and can be from all around Antaron, but preferably you will know nothing of North Eastern Ertain.

The reason for this is because I want you to shape the lands around here, using Durloch as your 'base camp.'

For example lets say I give you two similar choices later on in the game (If we get that far...) you can help out some local farmers by finding and returning some lost cattle or you can go and slay a group of Vampires hiding out in some local crypts. The latter obviously sounds more exciting, but word would soon spread of a group of guards (or adventurers) who had helped them out and the 'locals' are thus more likely to help you out, offer you meals, or even coin if its been a bountiful harvest! But also the Vampire hideaway will get more powerful.

Sorry for (perhaps) an information overload but this may give you a better idea of what this game may be about. If its not for you, don't worry you can back out, but I hope it is!

Ps. Does anyone know any good map tools?

Hammer, Great idea.

Zypheur, Although out of the norm is great merely picking an odd race is not always the best way to do it. For instance You could pick a Halfling Rogue, very generic, but adding twists to him, such as a physical or mental defect, an annoying habit or a massive lust for glory, money etc...

No problem Celeste, it obviously is a hectic time for you. Good luck to you and your new business!

I just looked those creatures up in the MM and it is my understanding that their level adj is +5 for a Hound Archon and +2 for a celestial being. This means that if we had a starting level of 3 or 6 respectively then I would allow it, however the starting level is one and to be honest I would like to keep it simple. So I am, regrettably, going to have to reject your request, however if you find a creature with a level adj of +1 I will allow it, I believe a Kobold is of +1 but you would need a very good reason for a Kobold to be in a human society!

I just thought I would see if anyone would dare start this with me and then I will update some more information almost daily, until I/we get a real feel for a setting.

As for a Back story or hook I have a few in mind. I want the players to decide on most things in this land. So although we may be in Drannon, the town and surrounding area you will know little about and has to be explored, whether you find a few quests on a town message board or just want to go out and explore the countryside. It's up to you!

I figure playing weekly gives a lot of preparation so if the party decides to go and explore a new part of Audalis rather than a planned adventure of rescuing a mayors daughter from ogres it doesn't matter.

Of course correct me if I am wrong

Sounds good Keeper, as I say I rather a good role-player than a rules buff!

The Inn seems pretty slow of late, one game fizzled on me and another maybe going on hiatus. This has freed up some extra time for me however and I think a great use of this time would be to discover whether I am DM material.

I have never DM'ed before, despite possessing a copy of the Dungeon Masters Guide, but I am willing to give it a shot.

Would anyone be interested in a short D&D adventure with a few level one characters, just so I can learn the ropes?

If the adventure was fun and we wanted continue into a campaign that would be great!

Emphasis will be on RP with extra EXP up for grabs for good Role-playing.

Subject: Pvt Boris Mk 2

I see now that he is a bit soft and having a D10 skill would be very rare, a rethink may be in order.

However if 'Boris' is a raw recruit how much knowledge of fighting would the standard private know? I will change the character slightly and make him more of an average Joe.

I am very keen to keep my Hindrances and edges though as they could become very useful both in game and in RP terms.

A few amendments:
Attributes changed to a more 'regular' guy.

Fighting and shooting included (for in-game use rather than RP)

Lost an edge to up an attribute by a point.

And finally, added throwing and driving as skills.

I would like to fill in one of these spaces.

However, I would like to create my own Character. I am thinking about a Half-elf Bard, would this be okay?

Also i am unfamiliar with 2nd ed would it be okay to make a 3rd ed then convert him?

Topic: The Shadow Cathedral
Subject: Not a Cleric!

Mylos strolled over to the table where Marius was sat. He was desperate to tell the stone-faced witch hunter of his discovery but as always Mylos felt uneasy and awkward around the hard Sendrian when by himself. Instead of telling Marius the information he had gained straight away, he supped on the tankard of ale on the table before him, careful not to spill it down his front.

Mylos took in his surroundings, noticing the suspicious, scared and solemn faces all around the inn. There seemed little happiness and Mylos was half tempted to summon and instrument and clear the awkward air that filled the tavern. The tension was too much however, and he feared reprisal from the townsfolk.

The moment came to tell Marius of the disappearing children and the terrors of the night. He turned to him and opened his mouth, but as he began to part his lips a dwarf came to their table. He was obviously not of the small-folk, he gave no suspicious glances but instead a confident look. He addressed Marius more than Mylos, clearly seeing him as a leader.

He spoke of much or all the information the old man had told him prior. The disappearing boys, the Mayor and Barons sons being kidnapped and the dangers after dark. He requested their help to find these fiends and rid them from the village. Mylos took him to be Paladin of sorts at first, with his noble attitude and pious talk. Yet he wore no armour and carried little weaponry and even those were blunt. It dawned on him then. He was a cleric.

Mylos was not fond of clerics, there pious attitude and devotion to the gods often was contradictory to Mylos' own behaviour. He cared little of the gods, other than Alanus the god of greed. Gods often didn't hear his prayers and Alanus was the only one that had ever answered him and even that was only once.

He heard the cleric out however, and studied him intently, he wanted to figure out this dwarf. He had met clerics who seemed pious enough to others taking food, drink and even gold to help get others prayers answered, yet once the cleric was full, his throat parched and his purse heavy he soon left for another town, ripe for the picking. Mylos had considered taking that for a life of his own, but even he could not stoop that low in his quest for gold.

The pious do-gooder seemed genuine enough however, and Mylos was willing to help him, the group may as well have another sword when the gathering mists came again. He awaited Marius' reply, as the question was directed towards him and Mylos rather suspected he already knew what his answer would be. However, before the cold-eyed witch hunter could reply a bard walked through the tavern entrance. Mylos found himself rejoicing, finally someone to lighten the dull mood, he thought. However Mylos' happiness was short-lived, the bard sung of the terrible things afflicting the town and the atmosphere grew even more sombre. After the song Marius had decided on his answer, it was as Mylos predicted.

"The disappearances sound most strange indeed. And although I can't really speak for my companions, I am fairly certain we all would be keen on knowing what lies behind it all."

After Marius, Mylos piped up his own opinion on the matter.

“I am sure you are both men with noble ambitions, however I am not such a man if I am to endanger my life for the existence of some pitiful, droll peasants I will need recompense.” Mylos paused to look around, hopefully his voice hadn't carried beyond this conversation. “When I say recompense I mean gold, not a sense of my own pompous well-being.”

Mylos sat back into his chair, his eyes piercing the young clerics face searching for corruption.

I am currently revising for some end of year exams at university, but once those are out the way (as of the 1st of June) I am thinking of beginning a game right here at the inn!

Seems faraway but hopefully I will have something together by mid-July, however who knows what sort of RL crisis I may be in by then!

I have never DMed before but am looking forward to the challenge! I am thinking of a generic 3.5e forgotten realms adventure, to ease myself in, but hopefully there will be some curveballs thrown in too!

I am really inspired by Trilogy wars, a game I am currently playing in, and its longevity and hopefully I can entertain a group of players for as long as, the fabulous, Tann'Talas.

Subject: The woods. They're not safe.

Mylos was as charismatic and friendly as ever when trying to pry information from a local of any town or village they may be staying at. His lips parted to a dazzling smile and he was full of compliments, telling the man what he wanted to hear. 'His carving was of great craftsmanship' Mylos told him despite only seeing a shoddy and poor attempt at a rider on a horse. The rider however struck him, he was very familiar, though Mylos was not sure why?

As the conversation turned to more current affairs, Mylos learnt a lot. The town was not safe after dark and young men and boys were being stolen from their homes, even the Mayors son himself. Though the woods were even more dangerous, and he thought immediately of Arvin. His face did not betray his apparent worry but he was worried nonetheless. The man did seem to have some fascination with shutters, as if they were of the greatest protection, could it be that they were important or was he merely a frightened peasant. Either way Mylos would certainly be closing his shutters tonight.

As their conversation was fading the man offered to sell him the half finished carving. Mylos politely rejected him, touching the amulet around his neck.

“Though a fine piece, it is still not even half finished. You keep working on it sir. When you are done it may be worth more than just a few copper pieces.” He walked away from the elder, leaving a look of bemusement upon his face.

He strode towards the Boar on rotation, beckoning Anna to follow. “We need to find the others. You heard what the man said, Arvin may not be safe, even with his magical shelter he kept ranting on about.”

Mylos opened the oak door to the tavern and strode inside, his eyes scanning for Marius. It was not for Mylos' intention to go out hunting for the stubborn wizard, but rather to try and gain some more information from the drunken men and women inside the homely inn. But that could wait first he must seek out Marius and the others.

I read the first book, Game of thrones, about five years ago and decided on a whim to read the books again about two months before the show was released unknowingly. I am on a Dance with Dragons and the 'arduous' nature with which the books are written are actually what makes it so fascinating for me. It is based on character development and the sometimes ruthless killing of characters is what makes it far different from other fantasy novels I have read before. i.e a young boy is unknowing of a prophecy that will lead him into the darkness of evil, with only a mysterious old wizard and brave warriors to accompany him etc...

As Tolkien fathered a struggle between good and evil fantaasy books I believe George RR Martin may of at least started a whole new form of fantasy writing, where there is no inherently good or evil characters, which I have to say I am very excited for.
