Asher flinched at the mention of "vermin rider" and nearly spilled his tea. "That's news.", he thought as he regained his composure.

After finishing his tea quietly he bid his friends good night adding, "I'm sure Weldon will be wanting an early start."

He found his bath nearly ready and savored the steam while it was topped off. The murmur of the common room was muffled as he relaxed into the bath with his hatchet at arms reach. Though not too long. He washed and then proceeded to clean his tunic sleeves and blot the mud off his clothes.

He found his room to be relatively comfortable and curled up in the divot in the center of his straw mattress after hanging his damp clothes on the fixtures for quicker drying.

Asher nodded at the fox for the obvious help and scooted his chair back in when Rosie arrived with the drinks ignoring Pete's remarks.

"Thanks Rosie!" he said with a grin and proceeded to blow on his too-hot tea. "Have you heard any stories about Shadow returning? Do you know anybeast that's seen it?"

Father Konrad was glad the younger ones were in front of him. Not only could he watch over them from behind but they wouldn't see him stretching his aching back. He had seen the smoke of Mandala for a few miles now and was beginning to detect the sights and smells of the town when Tor slacked her horse's pace and exchanged words with Callin.

"Father, i may speak with you." tor spoke low her voice not wanting to be hear outside of their conversation.
"I'm a slight worried for Sir Anthoney, he seems a slight out of sorts. as if he's pushing himself to much, an he has a slight pallor about him. I dare not broach such a volatile subject lest it look as if i question his abilities and wound his pride...." Tor trailed off as she gave a Father Konrad a worried look an chewed her lip in frustration.

"My dear Tor.", the holy man said with a smile. "You have done right in seeking counsel. Questions of age are often better received from the aged than the youthful. Allow me to pursue your concerns with Sir Anthony in a subtle manner." Father Conrad stroked the whitening forks of his red beard momentarily contemplating his own mortality. "But first, let's pursue a meal while we're passing through Mandala."

Father Konrad grunted when his foot hit the ground in Mandala. "I may also need to discuss the pace of this journey with our fine Knight.", he thought to himself as he stretched his legs and handed his reigns over to a strong-looking stable boy. "Her name is Tilly. Be kind to her.", he said to the lad. Tor seemed to take the safety of the baggage very seriously and saw to it all herself which made Father Konrad consider what she may be thinking of his own capabilities. Then he was distracted by his hunger and wobbled into the inn ready for a bowl of something warm and hearty.

When Tor joined them inside, Father Konrad was standing at the table finishing a prayer but he didn't sit when finished. "I'll stand while I can.", he said with a glance toward Anthony. "These old bones don't handle such a pace as quietly as young ones. Eh Sir Anthony?".

As Violet excused herself from the table and headed towards her room, one of the squirrels that had been gawking at her, made his move. Interposing himself between Violet and the stairway to the guest rooms, he blocked her way.

Asher spotted the motion of the interloper and scooted his chair back in case quick action was needed. The other squirrels seemed drunk and had obviously underestimated the danger they put themselves into. He longed for the peace of the Abbey or the natural quiet of the wild. All this motion and chatter set him on edge.

Then rosie came back with Fenirs' drink, fenir grinned. "hey, rosie when ya got a min' can we pick your brains?"

"And if you have any kind of hot tea around I'd like a cup.", Asher added. He hoped that would make him feel better both physically and mentally.

Asher ate his dinner quickly and enjoyed the impromptu song from his hosts.

...

Perhaps it was the chills that kept her from noticing it, but she did feel the tingling sensation at the back of her neck. That sensation of being looked at. Cautiously she looked out of the corner of her eye, and sure enough, she saw the grey squirrels glancing in her direction.

Asher noticed Vi's peek and said "Those two've been eyeballin' us since we came in. Makin' me a bit uneasy".

...

Turning to Asher and Oltovian, Fenir smirked.
"do we order a drink? or turn in early for the night and follow miss Vi's suit?"

"I'd love to have a few but I'm just not feelin' up to it right now. But, maybe a hot toddy would do me some good.", Asher said with a grin. "Maybe we can catch Rosey long enough to see what the local buzz is about Shadow."

Fenir waves Ahser and Oltovian to sit.

"I got this, Asher. you look almost as rough as those koons did a couple hours ago." Fenir smirked.

"Go for it.", Asher replied. "It's been a rough kind of day but not the roughest." he boasted.

Fenir took his cloak off and wrapped it around Vi who was rubbing her hands along her forearms.

he tosses his handkerchief (clean) at Asher.

"here, save your poor tunic sleeves." he chuckled but felt sorry for the poor squirrels.

Asher's reflexes belied the soreness in his body catching Fenir's handkerchief out of the air.

"Thanks buddy." he managed before wiping his nose on it and stuffing it up his tunic sleeve.

Fenir manages to bring the first two bowls to the table with out spilling much, but he'd have to go back for the other bowl and the bread, he didnt mind though.

Asher said "Vi. Oltovian." and gestured toward the two bowls on the table. He would have moved the two bowls toward his companions but he doubted they had forgotten his paws being so near his runny nose.

Seeing Lady Tor waving for him to join her and Callin, Father Konrad urged Tilly to a trot and hoped the pack mule would keep up for the short distance. "What is it M'lady?", he asked. She quickly reidderated what Sir Anthony an she had spoken about. "Sound plans, Your Highness.", he said with a smile.

"There is something we need to discuss before we reach Mandala.", he said while his smile faded to a more serious visage. "Will you be travelling openly as Lady Toralaian Astiel Ravenwindhaven II or will you be using a travelling name? There is renown in the former but safety in the latter. Unsavory folk take a bit more notice of the Princess and her company passing through than, say, a knight and his company... Food for thought."

The distrust between the Duke and Callin was not lost on Father Konrad. Had the Duke asked his opinion on the matter of allowing Callin to accompany her on this quest, the old man would have counselled in the affirmative. But, that hadn't been necessary. "Perhaps the Duke also sees the connection between them.", he thought. "Let's just hope Master Anthony's hardness doesn't scare the lad off before we see what he's made of." This thought led him to wonder what they were all really made of and he raised his left hand to his gilt pendant depicting Pelor's symbol in ponderance.

It was then that Father Konrad noticed one of the stable boys acting particularly down. "You there. Max, is it?", he said to the boy. "Does this horse have a name?" "Yes Father, Tilly!" he replied. Father Konrad reached into his haversack and produced a carved wooden horse. "Tilly. That's a good name for her. Here boy. Take good care of this one and see to naming it too."

Subject: Relief in sight

Asher eased his guard as they approached Storm Hollow. He paused for the wagons to pass trough the gates first since he didn't really know where to go afterwards. While waiting he caught himself entertaining a bit of self pity due to the discomfort of the mud and rain. Upon realizing this he shifted his thoughts to something happier: the kindness of Master Weldon.

Master Weldon steps off from his seat and approaches the guards. “Jorge! It b’ good t’ see ye. Master Telfor be in? Caught some bandits that ‘ave been stirrin’ trouble near the maze.”

"The maze. That must be what we tracked those other bandits to." Asher thought. He made a mental note to ask Weldon more about it tomorrow.

...

“Servin’ the folk b’ reward ‘nough,” Weldon replied. “Though, this will more than cover the costs lost in time.” He gave the reeve another nod. “We b’ grateful for the kindness.” He tosses one of the pouches to Fenir as the companions reward for their assistance.

Asher piped up, "Hey Fen, maybe we should give some of that for Jorge's brother? Half of that should be more than enough to see to our lodgings. That is, unless there are objections...". He hoped to follow Master Weldon's example of kindness.

...

From behind the counter, a slender male mouse with spectacles makes his way to the companions. “Welcome, guests!” he greets them warmly. “Welcome. Welcome. Come inside. Come inside. It is so good to see you. Welcome.”

Violet waved, though being careful to again keep her 'wing' close to the arm so as not to stretch it, resulting in a more shy looking wave, "Thank you for your hospitality," She replies semiformally, making sure to try and leave a good impression as she was taught when she was an abbeybabe as she walked up to the counter.

Archer nodded to the mouse innkeeper and looked around the place to get his bearings.

“Well,” the mouse says, catching his breath. “We’re glad you have come. Glad you have come. I’m Martin, master of our humble home here. My wife, Rosey, should be along shortly. Just keeping the supper from burning, you know.” Martin leads the companions to a table with round table with six chairs close to the fire. “Now, now, what can we do for you fine beasts?”

"I don't know about the guys but I'd like a room and a share of dinner, if there's room." Violet returned, giving a smile.

"And I'm lookin' forward to a warm fire, some wash-water and a soft spot to sleep. But let's start with whatever's warm for supper.", Archer added as he hung his cloak and quiver and bow over the back of the chair. He still wasn't feeling in tip-top shape but the prospect of having a dry night and rest set his mind at ease.

As he sat his hatchet handle clanked against the chair and he looked around the room to see if anybeast was taking an interest in what the group was carrying.

Entering the camp proper, she made her way over to pick up two bowls, and ladled soup for both her and Asher, offering one to the latter when he got there.

Asher accepted the bowl of soup with a very nasal "Thanks!" and began to slurp right off the side of the bowl. He let out the occasional unmistakable sigh of one drinking while unable to breathe through the nose. His second bowl of mostly broth he took a little more time with and honked his nose on his damp sleeve.

He tried to help the moles with their cleanup but found himself more in the way, disrupting their well practiced dance of packing up after a rest.

As the caravan made ready to move out he found that he was torn between taking point or keeping a position that allowed him to watch the prisoners. It didn't take long to decide that his job was to watch for the unknown danger and the others should be able to keep eyes on the prisoners.

Once the caravan started moving he took the forward position and hoped again for a chance to dry himself in some warmth when they reached Stormhollow.

Father Konrad hoped he had enough youth left to fulfill the Duke's request to accompany the Lady Ravenwindhaven on her quest. The redness had faded from his curly hair and forked beard around the temples and chin. He was becoming accustomed to his knees aching and popping, particularly in the cold weather. This morning, it seemed, that more of his joints were in revolt due to the chill of the early start. In all his 55 years he hadn't ventured far from the comfort of the castle yet he would never refuse a just request from the Duke.

He was dressed in his usual functional vestments consisting of a white tabard and hood with his prized mithral shirt and plain trousers showing at the sides of the tabard. At his left side hung his haversack of plain leather with brass hardware. Upon his belt were his dagger and mace.

"M'Lady, I do not mean the delay the company but, as you are probably aware, I must pray to the Sun Father at dawn. You are all welcome to join me."

With that he hung his haversack on the saddle horn and faced the dawn horizon. In his right hand his flanged mace of polished steel and brass sparkled in the sunlight. He stood straight and held both arms straight out at his sides. "I am chaste, just as these rays of Pelor have not shined on any other day. I am tempered, like the justice of the Sun Father. I am charitable, giving like the Shining One's light. I am diligent, upholding these virtues like the consistency of Pelor's days. I am patient, like the warmth of the Sun Father's light. I am kind, as the Breadgiving commands."

He went on like this for nearly an hour almost exhausing his sizable vocabulary of virtues and qualities of Pelor, the god of the Sun, Light, Strength, and Healing. He wrapped it up with a simple request for guidance and blessing of the quest her ladyship's company was setting out upon.

He re-slung his haversack and mounted the horse he had been loaned with a slight grunt due to the pain in his joints. His characteristic smile returned once the pain of the exertion had passed.

"That looks about right for what we might be looking for." Violet said in a hushed voice.

"Indeed. Let's get back to the wagons. We might even get some lunch." Asher did his best to whisper.

"I agree. We set out to find their hidey place, and as far as we know, this is it. Too risky to check further." Violet rubbed her upper arms, trying to get warmth to reach the inner muscles.

"I'd like to take a moment to get this spot recorded though," Violet added, looking around, "Let's see if we can find some trees nearby, get off the ground. Can you keep lookout while I try making a map? Or do you think we should just head back now?"

Asher answered, "I have no problem watching out while you make a quick map of things if your paper is dry. We have a few minutes to spare."

With that he starts back looking for a tree or someplace to hole up in for a few minutes.

Asher was torn between lunch, accompanying Vi, and backtracking the bandits.

“Cock sure of yerself, ye are, eh?” He sighed once more. “Well, go on, if ye must."

Asher set off after Vi with his arrow still nocked and anxiety on his face.

Weldon seems to have things under control here. I've gone without lunch before. Backtracking is optional. Watching Vi run off alone is a bad nut.
