I know the framework doesn't have that kind of response from Hebert prepared, but the thought of him "joking" with her at the first meeting just tickled me to death. I couldn't resist.

He's obviously not going to be upset with any nicknames she might give, to be clear.

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine; Shuttlebay 2 - 1035

"So," Hebert asked, having made his introductions to Yas and V'Lur, "what can I do to be of service?"

"You are the ranking officer, sir," V'Lur intoned, taking up a PADD that Lt Zai had left in his possession, a short while ago, and handing it over to Ens Thomason, "thus, it is not my place to issue you orders; however, the Lieutenant has asked that we make appropriate preparations for the arrival of the Kuldar and Rytain ambassadors,"

Taking the PADD in hand, Hebert started looking over the requests from Lt. Zai. This V'Lur is a professional, I appreciate the decorum. As he finished, he glanced up and she continued speaking. "SCPO Kukkonen and PO2 Owen are on the flight deck, now, tending to the Type-8's and Type-18's, if you would like to address the onboard systems for the Type-10, that would be acceptable. Conversely, if you would prefer to stay here in the Ops center and assist in securing the remote systems and the CONN interface, I can send CPO Yasuo onto the deck with Kukkonen and Owen. The choice is yours, sir."

"I'm a hands on person, I'll join Kukkonen and Own on the flight deck."

"Very well, sir," V'Lur deadpanned, gesturing through the large window that overlooked the shuttlebay, "You will find the Type-10 shuttle in the maintenance bay. Access is via the lift or the stairwell just off the gantry outside this office. The assistance is appreciated, sir."

---

Stepping down the stairs into the bay, Hebert looked around, admiring the pristine condition of all the shuttles, pods, and vehicles around. He noticed the two other people in the bay almost immediately, watching them glance at him and back at each other. Ah, the surprised response. Seems I'm 'the giant' to them. V'Lur was much more disciplined. He smiled inwardly. Moments later, "Officer on deck!" a male voice sounded. "As you were. I"m just here to help and introduce myself."

The male took the iniative. "Good morning, sir," he said, advancing to meet Thomason and extending a hand in a more informal greeting method, "I'm Senior Chief Petty Officer Maarti Kukonnen and this," he continued as the female of the pair smiled largely rushing over to him, "is Petty Officer Second Class Megan Owen. You must be Ensign Thomason. Welcome aboard, sir."

I could crush this man's hand if I wanted. The thought flashed through him before he could help himself, making him smile which he used as a way to appear more genuine, shaking Maarti's hand firmly but still friendly. "I'm Hebert Thomason, but I prefer Hebert," he let the specific pronunciation of Ay-Bear hang for a quarter second before continuing, "It's a pleasure to meet you both."

"Yessir," Megan cheeped, offering her own tiny hand for a shake of the ensign's massive one, "Welcome ta th' Deck, Ensign Tiny, er, Thomason, Ensign Thomason, Sir," Hebert's deep, powerful laughter rang out. "Ensign Tiny. I'll be honest, that's a new one for me." He carefully accepted her handshake.

"You'll have to forgive, Petty Officer Owen," SCPO Kukonnen chuckled, perhaps a bit uneasily, "She's got a habit of handing out nicknames. I've been ‘Kook' for almost eight months, now." He nudged Megan with an elbow; "Want to tell the Ensign what you call Lt Zai and Ensign P'Tammah?"

"Yes, tell me, Petty Officer Second Class Megan Owen. What do you call Ensign Vaela P'Tammah and our Executive Officer, Lieutenant Tochi Zai." Hebert hardened his face, enunciating the formal titles of each name used, staring hard down at the tiny woman.

Subject: Hebert meets the crew

Stardate 2365.02.08
USS Peregrine - Personal Quarters 1005

Much to his dismay, disappointment, and perhaps surprise, he hadn't run into anyone yet that seemed remotely keen on introductions. Sure, Hebert had seen a couple folks in the gym in the early morning, which surprised him a bit, given the small sample size the Peregrine offered, but still, they seemed to desire doing their own thing more than meeting him.

I wonder if it's my size. The thought crept into his mind more often than he'd care to mention, really. The vast majority of his decisions in life, professionally and personally, were weighted with how his size would affect the outcome. Should his size have been a factor in why people were hesitant to engage him in even simple conversation, Hebert frankly wouldn't be surprised, for it wouldn't be the first time and it most certainly wouldn't be the last.

Hebert found his commanding officer had made a fantastic first impression the night before, with his easy mannerisms and smooth way of speaking. Ah, well. I'm sure I'll meet some of the crew today.

Setting up the various sentimental items he carried, Hebert came to his chess collection. His mother had instilled in him at a very early age a passion for mental exercise, which he took to like a duck to water, to the astonishment of his peers and even his teachers. When he turned 8, his father gave him his first chess set - A hand carved marble set with a wooden base and marble board that he had gotten from another country. His father told him one day, "My grandfather bought this for my dad, who in turn gave it to me, so now I give it to you. Take care of it, son."

From that day, Hebert treasured no other item on or above the earth more than that chess set. Fortunately, none dared try to take it from him, especially considering he could likely, literally, tear the head off the man that tried. Given it's size, he was able to stow it and bring it with him on his assignment to the Starbase and now on his first assignment aboard the Peregrine.

He took his time bring it out and setting up the pieces, made harder given the size of his hands comparatively to the board, but he was meticulous.

He sat looking at the board, playing a mental game in his mind, wondering if anyone on the starship would be up for a game when his reverie was interrupted by a voice.

=/= Flight Operations to Ensign Thomason =/=

"Thomason here." His resounding voice called out.

=/= Master Chief V'Lur, here, sir. I know you are not scheduled to be on duty until 1300 hours; however, if you have nothing else scheduled and would like to join us in Flight Control, another set of hands would be appreciated. =/=

"Aye, Master Chief. I'm enroute."

That was sooner than expected. Time to meet some folks after all. Hebert smiled and left his belongings half-scattered on his bunk. I hope my room mate doesn't mind...

Quickly checking his uniform and composing his appearance, he made his way to Flight Control, a little pep in his step and a spark of hope in his heart.

--

Arriving at Flight Operations, Hebert found a couple of people inside and announced himself. "Ensign Thomason reporting as requested and here to help however I can." He smiled the best smile he could, eager to make a good first impression on his crewmates.

V'Lur and Yasuo snapped to attention as Thomason entered and rendered a salute. "Good morning, sir," V'Lur said, "and welcome aboard. I am Master Chief Petty Officer V'Lur and this," with a faint gesture to Yas, "is Chief Petty Officer Seto Yasuo."

Hebert glanced at CPO Yasuo with a hint of recognition. "You were in the gym with me this morning, no?"

"Yessir," Yas replied, craning his neck to meet the mountainous man's gaze, "very impressive, sir. You can call me Yas."

"Hebert Thomason, it's a pleasure to meet you." Hebert extended his hand in as friendly a manner as he could.

V'Lur and Yasuo, in turn, shook the big man's hand. "A pleasure to meet you, as well, sir," both said.

"So, what can I do to be of service?" Hebert asked.

Yes indeed, today is going to be a fine day.

USS Peregrine - Workout Facility 0530

"Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise." Hebert said aloud to the empty room as he racked more weights for the press. He enjoyed powering through a long morning work out before heading over for a large breakfast. Maintaining his enormous physique took quite the caloric intake, after all.

After his conversation with his commanding officer, Lt. Zai, he found himself eager to come around to 1500 today. He was ready to show he was in command of his job and that he would be an asset to the crew and the Captain. Besides, I hope to be a Captain myself, someday. He grinned inwardly, using the flowing good vibes to push through his exercise.

Normally, he would have a spotter to allow him to use heavier weight, but given no one he'd met yet came, in his eyes, even close to being able to help him should the weight overcome him, he decided to stick with lighter loads and go with higher reps for a more cardio-based routine this morning. Perhaps today I can meet a potential partner. If he was nothing else, Hebert Thomason considered himself to be a hopeful and optimistic person.

(OOC:Assuming no interaction or interruptions)

Hours later, at around 0900, Hebert finished his workout and, dripping with sweat, he made his way to the mess hall, ready to show the lucky bastards of the Peregrine how a man puts away a plate of food.

Loading his plate down with proteins, carbs, fiber, and fruits, he sat down and began enjoying breakfast with gusto, ready for his first full day on his new home, wondering who he would meet first and what kind of person they would be.

"Likely not," Tochi said in agreement with Hebert, about his admissions of taking up fencing, "I'm something of a fencer, myself. Should time allow, we'll most definitely have to meet for a match or two. Surprise registered plainly on the ensign's face. Before he could respond, his CO continued, "Anyway," he said, gesturing for Hebert himself to continue, "please."

"I enjoy mental and physical challenge. I've run every simulation available to me for my position and I look forward to the challenges and demands this job brings, as well as, of course, serving under you, sir."

"You say that, now, Ensign," Tochi grinned playfully at him, "but wait until you've been with us a few months. Your opinion might change. Have you checked in with Ops and been assigned quarters, yet?"

Laughing at the chief's joke, Hebert responded, "I haven't had a chance yet, sir, I wanted to come make my introduction. If I may, sir, I have a few questions before then?"

(OOC: Assuming Zai is alright with asking)

"When and where would we find the scheduling for our shifts?"

(OOC: Assuming answer)

"I see. Am I to be given command shifts? Or just helm?"

(OOC: Assuming answer)

"Understood, thank you. Lastly, I suppose, is what happens next? I've never been assigned to a starship. Where do I go from this office?"

(OOC: Assuming answer.)

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine; XO's Office - 1900

*whooom* Oh crap...

"It's open." Ensign Thomason heard a voice from behind the door sound out. As the door slid open, Hebert ducked inside. Damn short doors. This'll get old quickly... Having the presence of mind to keep his irritation with the doors off of his face, he stepped into the office of his new commanding officer.

A pang of nerves washed over Hebert's face as he stood before Tochi. "Good day, sir. Ensign Hebert Thomason reporting for duty." Standing in a strict salutatory posture, the bass in his voice sounding deeply into the small room. Nailed it. Perfectly done. Hebert smiled inwardly, but still, unfortunately, didn't keep his nerves off of his face. First impressions mattered, after all.

The man sitting before him, across the desk, spoke easily, as all men with experience in their lives do. "At ease, Ensign." he said while rising and reaching to shake his hand. "Welcome to the Peregrine." His voice is pleasant. You can't fake a tone like that.

Reaching across carefully, it was time for the moment Hebert had been practicing. He had no idea of the strength of a Trill's frame, so he applied what he had been practicing, assuming to be a proper handshake, having decided just short of what he applies to men, and shook the Lieutenant's hand. Well, no pain on his face. Hebert smiled, genuinely. "Thank you, sir. It's a privilege and an honor to be here."

"Please," Zai said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk, "have a seat.

Hebert sat in the chair easily, back ramrod straight. No time for slouching, man. Got to show him I'm professional. Resting his hands on his thighs, he looked up as his CO continued.

"I understand this is your first tour aboard a starship, Mister Thomason. You just graduated the Academy a few months ago, correct?"

"Yes, sir. I've been at Starbase 118 awaiting transfer orders. Though I appreciate the amenities and life of the starbase, I'm ready to get out and do what I can for Starfleet." Hebert said naturally. There was no false bravado or enthusiasm in his voice, but he may have hidden the fact that he was just getting bored.

((OOC: Assuming Tochi asks something of a "tell me about yourself" here))

"I'm a simple man, sir. I work out several times a day for several hours and I enjoy wrestling, though few deem me an opponent they'd like to tangle with." Hebert chuckled softly. "I've recently taken up the art of fencing. I'm not much for a foil or épée, greatly preferring the power of a saber. Naturally, if I could, I'd just use a claymore, but I doubt that's allowed." He laughed deeply.

(OOC: Assuming Tochi allows him to continue)

"I enjoy mental and physical challenges. I've run every simulation available to me for my position and I look forward to the challenges and demands this job brings, as well as, of course, serving under you, sir."

Stardate 2365.02.07
Starbase 118 - Personal Quarters - 1900

It's time for you to report to your new commanding officer, Ensign Thomason. I wish you and The Peregrine the best. Godspeed. His former commanding officer had given him his final orders to report to Lieutenant Zai effective immediately. While he held is former Lieutenant in high regard, he was eager to be off the base. Not one to be stuck in one place for an exceptionally long time, it would be good to "see the stars" as his mam said when she found out he was going to be on "one of those starship things". He spent the last couple hours packing his bag with his belongings.

Stepping out of the lift in Starbase 118, he was met by his first visual experience with the USS Peregrine.

It's a lot smaller than I was expecting... Hebert felt a flash of disappointment. His mind, being such a large person, envisioned a giant beast of a starship.

Adjusting his uniform, he set his jaw and walked towards the ship. After being admitted on board (without all that much trouble, actually thought Hebert) he asked around for Lt Zai.

He was pointed in the direction of the XO's office on deck 2. Minutes later, he found himself standing outside of the office of his new commanding officer.

Out of everything, I don't feel nervous. Anxious? Naw, that's not right. Giddy? What am I, a small child? Nah. Lost in thought, Hebert, without thinking, turned slightly and slapped his hand on the door in front of him with a cacophonous thud. His thought was only of leaning against the support of the door while he considered his options, but he failed to connect that that particular door belonging to Lieutenant Zai...

*THUD* Oh crap...

Stardate 2365.02.07
Starbase 118, Flight Simulations - 1235

Having been given the day off, Hebert found the best way to calm his jitters from his coming meeting with his new crew was to practice what he was good at in flight control simulations.

As he went through various simulations, he began at impulse, recalling what one of his instructors at the Academy told him nearly constantly, "During spaceflight at impulse, Conn is responsible for monitoring relativistic effects as well the inertial damping system status."

Of course, when he first heard it, it made literally no sense to him, but now, having spent so many hours in preparation and practice, these simulations became like muscle memory to him.

As he progressed through the difficulties, factoring in things like asteroids and proceeding to warp speed, he recalled another lesson from his instructor. "When traveling at warp speed, Conn is required to monitor the subspace field geometry in parallel with the engineering department."

He realized, of course, that thinking about the different departments reminded him that he still had a ship load of people to meet. Hebert Thomason He thought loudly to himself. Get a hold of yourself, son. This is just another day for you. You're pretty flagging fantastic, and they'll see it too. His personal speech lifted his flailing self esteem. "I'm good at what I do. I'm an asset to the USS Peregrine, and they'll see that soon too." He chuckled. "Besides, I doubt any of the other FCO's could power lift the CONN console." He laughed.

An alarm in the simulation snapped Ensign Thomason back to reality. Correcting the variance that had occurred, he thought back to his instructor's final speech about warp speed. "During warp flight, the Conn console continually updates long-range sensor data and makes automatic course corrections to adjust for minor variations in the density of the interstellar medium."

He realized at that moment he had forgotten to connect the "CONN"sole (He always chuckled at his joke) to the long range sensors. I get that it's a simulation, but you would THINK that the long range sensors would ALWAYS be connected to necessary systems in a starship that's supposed to fly around the galaxy... he mused sourly, irritated that such an amateur mistake had gotten him from his day dreaming.

"Looks like another hour in the gym for me," he muttered to no one in particular, avoiding another close call with an asteroid, informing that asteroid of his exact opinion of it, under his breath of course, as an honorable officer of Starfleet would never utter such words around decent people.

"It's going to be a long day."

Stardate 2365.02.07
Starbase 118, Personal Quarters - 0530

It was cold in that final morning that Hebert woke up in his quarters on Starbase 118. To be fair, it was always cold, it's how the slumbering giant liked the room. It reminded him of home on Earth.

The only thing missing is that snow. He thought languidly to himself as he rose from his bed. He missed snow, very much. It took the edge out of the heat in the air and brought the ambient temperature back down to a level he liked. He often visited the holodeck to experience it, but knowing it was all fake made it never quite the same.

Spinning in his bed, he planted his enormous feet on the floor. Time to rise and shine He thought. Today's the day!

Hebert Thomason, for the first time in ages, found himself slightly nervous. With an air of mild anxiety and anticipation, he prepared himself for his morning work out, planning to dump his feelings into the iron jungle that waited for him. His morning exercises always calmed him, regardless of the situation he was experiencing or the feelings that welled in him that day. He went in with a fury, a power that would come expected of the 6'8" colossus of a man. At 345 lbs, he walked confidently. Few ever tried to talk to him, fewer still tried to start with him, and the fewest ever tried to pick a fight, not that anyone would ever have a reason to.

Hebert loved, more than anything, helping people. He always said, "Reading is good for the mind, exercise is good for the body, but helping friends and others is good for the soul." He believed that notion to his core and he showed it with his everyday actions.

Last week, even, a improperly balanced pillar had fallen on one of his mates while they were in the cargo hold. Hebert, lucky to have been there, showed the pillar right proper who was in charge, lifted the bastard clean off of his friend and placed it to the side where it would do no further harm.

Hebert is not one quick to anger, but the fury of the giant is easily roused by danger to his comrades.

Regardless, Hebert found today to be a giddy day, even through his work out. Today was the day he would finally get to see the ship that would be his first posting as a flight control officer, The USS Peregrine, captained by none other than Silas Drake.

Despite leaving his heart and soul on the floor of the iron jungle, he found himself wondering how he would be received by his future crew mates. He wondered what the chief flight control officer was like. He was told it was male Trill named Tochi Zai.

Never met a trill he thought to himself for the thousandth time, though he eagerly looked forward to meeting his superiors and more so to meet his colleagues.

"Soon enough, soon enough." He mumbled out loud to himself as he benched the 450 lb barbell for the 30th time that morning, though none were around to hear him.

Hebert Thomason spent the rest of his workout consumed by the thoughts of his future ship, just hoping that the introductions went well.
