Group 0 - Deathstalker

As Garrus entered the house, he saw immediately that the inside was much improved from the outside of the house. Sturdy tables and chairs along with other items showed that the liveryman was not as poor as the outside of the abode seemed. The two thick boys had taken their rain coats off and moved to the back of the home, through a curtained door. A timid woman, the same one you saw grab the tiny boy earlier, comes in and sets some ale on the table along with a few stacks of thick honey bread.

After a bit of small talk the man seems to relax and he begins saying some interesting things. "There have been strange things going on in this town, did ya know?" He nods his head towards the east. "Our neighbors, in that small cottage. #9 are very suspicious and odd! They don't talk at all and sometimes I see them sneaking around at night." With a guffaw he says, "They are elves, and just between you and me, I don't trust em."

More small talk about the lands and fertility and his family continue for about an hour. Just as you are about to excuse yourself and move on he says something else that piques your interest. "You know what happened the other month? Our neighbors over at the general store? #12 They up and disappeared a couple months ago; gone fer nearly a fortnight, then the whole family up and came back. Didn’t even leave one of the boys to mind the store! It was the strangest thing."

The last thing you gather is that he doesn't like the people at the Golden Grain Inn and tells you that the wine and atmosphere at the Slumbering Serpent is much better.

After thanking him for the ale, you move out and heft your axe. The liveryman nods and waves as he closes the door and moves back into the house.

If there is anything else you wanted to say or ask, go ahead and post it. If not you are back outside on Killian's porch.

Group 3 - Kyuss, Haiden, Stings and Valerus

As the group stops in front of the inn and before they even begin to speak the lady smiles broadly and rushes down the porch steps, "Come in out of the rain! I insist!!" Shooing the group towards the door with a broom in a friendly manner the group heads inside out of the rain. As you enter you immediately feel the comforts of a great inn. The shutters are flung wide and sunlight, what little there is of it, streams into the room from a number of large windows. The place has a very cheerful atmosphere. There are about 7 or so customers here, enjoying a drink or five at the large table in the center of the room. There are a few other smaller tables but mostly a center large table is where everyone gathers to eat and talk. Conversations here are cheerful, and occasionally rowdy or ribald, but you noticed the lady already swatted someone in the back of the head that was outright vulgar in his talk. It seemed she brooks no vulgarity in her inn.

Slumbering Serpent

After allowing you to take in the place she smiles as you ask her your questions and answers them the best she can.

How much for a nights lodging and meal: "We have a lavish guest room for 4GP per night, a private Guest room for 2GP, Multiple guest rooms for parties of people for 8sp per bed (4 beds per room), and finally the common double guest rooms for 15sp per night."

Do the serve anything special. With a huge smile she calls to her husband Ollwin to bring out the wine and sits the group at the end of the large table in the center (which is fairly empty). Every single one of you that even sip the wine find that it is the best wine you have ever tasted, connoisseur or no.

What separates this inn from the other. With a scowl on her face. "Our prices can't be beat. And we treat our customers like family. There is nothing wrong with the competition I guess, just friendliness.

Have you noticed anything strange going on in town. "We don't get out much, but our customer base has been thinning with people leaving town. We hear the rumor's of course about people being taken and the like, but don't you go putting too much faith into rumors. This is after all a wilderness village and people scare pretty easy.

Does she know any of the people who have gone missing. With a nod she says, "I knew a few. I don't know if they have gone missing or just up and left. No one is for sure what is going on."

Does she know why any of the people would have up and left all their things. "Some people just get tired of the life I guess. They take the money they have and leave. But it is very strange to leave your belongings behind."

Why did she not react like the farmer and his family? "I am unsure what you mean? We keep a safe harbor for people here. We don't fear much as we are well liked around town. I guess because we feel safe."

Whats with the strange grouping of trees beside the inn. "The elms? Nothing strange about them that I know of. Good healthy trees. And there is a strange old man that lives in a hut in those trees. But he keeps to himself and don't bother nobody that I am aware of."

You are sitting in the eastern end of the long table in the middle.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Severous

You watch carefully as the group moves in. You take note of the adventurer equipment and packs the group is carrying and are fairly positive this is part of the group you were supposed to join. But where were the rest?

You are sitting at the far left small table in the inn north of the long table in the middle.

Group 1 - Gunther, Sentinel, Fandil, Oriel

As Gunther goes into his lavish introduction the burly man watches with eyebrow raised. As soon as the swift broadsword is drawn from its sheath a longsword springs into the mans hands faster than lightning and is pointed in the paladins direction. The draw was one of great skill and ease and with a look of sternness on his face he held it there until he realized what the paladin was doing. He turned his sword over quickly and re-sheathed it at his side before listening to the rest of the paladins speech.

A little embarrassed looking the man waves the paladin to his feet. "No need for all that showy stuff around these parts lad. Also, drawing steel unexpectedly in these parts will cause a mess of problems for you. It may be best if you greet people with a bit less flash and fare."
After looking the group over one more time he opens the door wider. "I am Zakarias Ormond. I tell you what strangers. We can share information, how does that sound? I will ask you one question and you ask me one question. If we decide we are fair and not forthcoming with the truth, we can continue. If we decide we aren't, we will part ways immediately."

He motions the group inside the house and you see a comfortable abode inside. A long table is in the center and he motions for the group to sit if they wish. He remains standing. A fabulous longsword belted at his side, but other than that he seems unarmed. He moves a curtained doorway at the north end of the room and says something quietly behind it. He turns back to the group and waits a minute as another man comes through the curtain. This one is much older, probably a human in about his 60's. He has seen combat as well. He is a very scarred veteran and he is fully armed and armored. He wears thick banded mail and has a shield slung across his left shoulder. At his side is a thick broadsword with a well worn hilt. From a pouch at his side he brings out a small ornate owl carving with emerald eyes. He sets it on the center of the table and moves back with his hand on the weapons hilt.

The mayor looks the group over and smiles. "Now, why don't we begin. I will ask the first question if you don't mind. What are you and your companions really doing here in Orlane?"

You are either standing or sitting at the table inside the mayor's home. The front door is right behind you and not locked or bolted.

Group 2 - Aelbric, Doogan, Elkin, Katai

I have gotten no reply from anyone in this group yet so will pause until I get at least some reaction.

Group 1 - Gunther, Sentinal, Fandil, Oriel

Approaching the porch Gunther grips his holy symbol and prays a moment before firmly rapping upon the door. A few moments pass before a curtain opens in the window beside the door. After a few moments a burly middle aged man answers cautiously, cracking the door open just a hair.

After a moment he says, "Can I help you?"

Gunther clears his throat and starts to answer. "Greetings sir, I was sent to your humble abode by Nowell Graven. I had asked him about available farmland in the area and he sent me in your direction."

The man opens the door a bit wider but is still cautious. After looking the group over he says, "You sure don't look like farmers to me. Your group looks a bit young and heavily armed for that work aren't you?"

I will continue with the group as soon as you post what you are going to do. I won't wait for other groups.

As far as the cart and donkey there is nothing on the cart. It was given to you for use in travel, so you could put your packs and equipment on it for long days travelling.

Subject: Groups and more groups..

Group 0 - Deathstalker

Deathstalker stopped as the woman came rushing out for her infant. He lowered his weapon, its haft rasping lightly against his spiked metal gauntlets, until it was hanging at his side. He attempted to look as innocent as possible, it was tough, but he was used to being stared upon by strangers. A burly farmer rushed onto the porch and was staring him down when what looked to be two of his teenage sons rushed out with crossbows in hand. "What are you about?" The farmer called out in a southern drawl. "I don't have business with you or your kin, farmer.", Deathstalker replied as he looked over the situation with a keen eye.

The farmer seemed to only then notice that his two sons were holding crossbows. He reached out and knocked them both to point downward towards the porch in a scolding manner. "My apologies then. These are strange time we are in and people are pretty careful around here." He leans his pitchfork against the wall of the house and in a grumbling voice orders the two boys back into the house. He moves over to a small outdoor wicker table and chair. One of the boys comes back out of the house with a small barrel of some sort and a few cups. "If ya would like to come out of tha rain a spell, you are welcome. I just ask that ya lean yer axe on tha front of the porch until we know each other a bit better. My name is Killian Gade." He opens the front door of his home and motions for the warrior to come in out of the light rain.

Your evaluation is that the farmer himself used to be a skilled warrior at one point, but he is older now and looks to be out of practice. The boys didn't hold their crossbows right when they were holding them, but they looked competent enough to hunt if needed.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Group 1 - Gunther, Sentinal, Fandil, Oriel

After a bit of conversation by the group it seems a destination had been decided by all. Oriel moved over towards the cart and donkey, whispering lightly to it and stroking a bit of rain from its face he grabbed onto the bridle and pulled gently. The donkey didn't hesitate and the cart began to move forward easily. Holding his bow lightly in his right hand he watches closely for anything untoward as they move forward.

After scanning the area from the tree, the halfling Sentinel quickly moved down when his group was preparing to leave. "Didn't see a thing but a normal village." He said to Gunther as the group got together. Sentinel moved onto the road with the others, scanning the area as they moved east. The road was wet and fairly muddy and the halfling was not happy. Looking over towards the cart and donkey and seeing Gunther and Oriel discussing things as they moved forward he decided to join the conversation as well. Moving with amazingly fluid grace the halfling vaulted easily into the air and landed on the cart as light as a feather. He moved forward and to the side where Oriel was leading and sat with his legs dangling from the side as the three began to talk.

Fandil followed suite and the gnome hopped up onto the cart as well, although not quite a fluidly. He grumbled a bit about the mud and weather but other than that kept to himself and watched what the others were doing.

Gunther nodded in satisfaction and the group was under way. The group quickly passed the two buildings at the beginning of town. To the north was the building the group of four had entered earlier and to the south was the building where the girl churning something but had quickly passed inside. The curtains to that house continued to move as the group was obviously being watched from inside.

The next building to the south was fairly close to the first. It was a nondescript square wooden building that had heavy shutters closed over the windows. The door looks stout, but stands open. No one was visible from the outside and you hear nothing. Behind the small but sturdy building is another long, low structure that points towards the south.

A fork in the road comes up next and the group veered slightly to the southeast and took the easterly path. To the left is an obviously large inn. This large wooden inn is decorated with carvings of sheaves of wheat along the eaves of the roof. The inn was whitewashed at one time, but much of the paint has peeled. A sign picturing a cluster of wheat and a pitcher of beer or ale hangs over the door. The Golden Grain in possibly? A corral and stable, apparently empty, are off to the side.

To the south side of the road across from the Inn stands another small sturdy building. A sign with a spinning wheel and a loom hangs outside and several bales of wool are stacked on the wide porch. No people are visible either outside the Inn or outside the southern building. Pushing onward the group quickly comes to another small building to the south. This one is definitely different than most of the ones he had seen. A gem-encrusted ring is pictured on a sign outside of this establishment. The doors and windows are all open. The building is small, but looks extremely sturdy; the shutters and doors are of heavy wood, reinforced with iron bands.

Passing that a small pathway leads off the road to the north to another house with a large barn and stable in the back. This is an exceedingly run-down structure for sure. Probably the worst the group had seen yet. Faint traces of a former paint job cling to small parts of the walls, but in some places the bare wood has started to rot. A fenced walkway leads from the road to the back of the house, and horse manure is scattered liberally about.

As the easterly most portion of the road dips southeast you see a building to the south. This is a fairly well-kept establishment with an assortment of farm implements and cooking utensils on the wide porch. The door stands open, and a well-painted sign depicting a pot, a plow, a sack, and a lantern hangs over all. No one is seen on the outside of the building as you pass.

Directly in front of the group facing east before you make the turn southeast is a very small cottage. This small, square building has been freshly whitewashed. Heavy curtains hang over the windows, and the door is shut tight.

The grounds get very nice as you move east towards the lake and the trees are nice and trimmed. This is definitely a well to do yard leading up to a VERY nice house indeed. This house is set well back from the road, and is partially screened by a pair of medium-sized elms. This is by far the most imposing house in the village. The walls have been regularly whitewashed and the roof gleams with new wooden shingles. A wide porch crosses the entire front of the house, and columns of wood support the overhanging roof. The columns have been carved into leafy patterns by a skilled craftsman. There is a path leading from the house to a small wooden building in the back.

You arrive at the mayor's house and no one is outside.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Group 2 - Aelbric, Doogan, Elkin, Katai

The second group got together and spoke quietly. They would be the scouts of the party and try to find Deathstalker along the way. Shouldering their equipment they followed a bit behind Gunther and his group. Watching carefully all of the buildings as they passed.

You see the same buildings posted above up to the point of where they go east to the mayor's house, you continue to the southeast.

The road continues on for a bit and just runs through fields of wheat and barley to the south. Ahead you see a cluster of buildings before a bridge crosses a river that heads towards the lake to the north. The building to the south is in great disrepair. This house is in desperate need of repair. The front door, porch steps, and visible roof supports are missing. The barn is in even worse condition, but the strange thing is that there are many chickens in the yard suggesting that the place is indeed inhabited, even in the condition it is in.

To the north side of the road it doesn't get much prettier. Before this building, a sign crudely depicting a needle piercing the seat of a pair of pants hangs before this establishment, a small ramshackle building in need of considerable repair. A shutter hangs loosely, shingles are missing from the roof and the walls show sign of rot in many places. No one seems to be about outside of either building.

Forging eastward you cross the sturdy bridge and come to a cluster of trees, once past that more buildings are clustered together. To the north #15 is an obvious smithy, though no sign hangs above the place. The shop part of the building is unwalled, and two brawny lads operate a bellows while a giant of a man hammers thunderously upon a piece of metal that will soon become the blade of a shovel. Soot and smoke surround the area.

Directly across the smithy to the east #16 is a devastated building. The doors and windows of this large building are boarded up. A sign lies face-down in the weeds before the porch, which may be reached by climbing three broken steps. The roof has several gaping holes, and the general appearance of the place suggests that it has been long abandoned.

Just as you take a look and see the building to the south of the abandoned building #14 you hear a loud bellow and the sounds of hammering on iron has stopped suddenly. The large smithy has a contorted look of rage on his face and he is shaking his hammer at the group, "BEGONE! By the gods above I condemn you!! You will not pass!! Turn your evil blight about or face the wrath of all that is holy!!" The large smithy apparently is crazed and has rushed towards the road. He is barely restrained as the two brawny lads are holding the man back from obviously attacking the group and you stop where you are as they struggle to hold him back.

As all of the ruckus is going on you notice something odd. Your slight glance at building #14 had shown you that it was some sort of open faced carpenter shop and a house. A wooden board in the shape of a saw hangs before this well-constructed building. The front part of the structure is unwalled, and inside of this breezy area there is a carpenter hard at work. Many tools (saws, hammers, nails, pry bars, etc.) are scattered about, and some boards are mounted on sawhorses. After all of the commotion the carpenter hasn't even looked up. He just continues to hammer and saw as if nothing is going on. It is very spooky.

You are standing just past the bridge and have come to a stop. The smithy and the two boys are just ahead of you on the road just before the path to #15 and #16.

++++++++++++++++++++++++
Group 3 - Kyuss, Haiden, Stings and Valerus

The last group to depart had decided to check on the obvious temple to the northeast. After the first two groups had departed they turned north and headed towards the cluster of trees. The first building you pass is obviously a large wooden inn. #6 It is decorated with carvings of sheaves of wheat along the eaves of the roof. The inn was whitewashed at one time, but much of the paint has peeled. A sign picturing a cluster of wheat and a pitcher of beer or ale hangs over the door. A corral and stable, apparently empty, are off to the side.

Traveling further north you come across no building of consequence, a small farmhouse to the right before crossing a bridge is the only thing in sight. A huge cluster of towering elms come into view to the left. A narrow trail winds among majestic elms to the west, at times disappearing into thick shrubbery. The bushes between the trees are dense, rising to a height of eight or ten feet. The elms themselves average 75‘ tall, and they are the only trees here. They are widely spaced, allowing much sunlight to pour between their ancient boughs.

To the east of the giant elms is another inn. A large, colorful sign pictures a red dragon with its head resting contentedly on its paws. A plume of smoke rises from the serpent’s nose and its eyes are closed. This inn is smaller and older than the one to the south. Several beds of flowers brighten the front, however, and the large middle-aged woman sweeping the porch looks cheerful. She greets you with a "How are you?" and a friendly wave.

You are stopped now in front of an Inn.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Group 4 - Severous

You had been in worst places before that was for sure. Having arrived a few hours ago you had just sat down to eat a hearty breakfast. The prices were very cheap and the hospitality was second to none. The party you were supposed to find and join should have been here by now and you wonder what was keeping them. You decided that if no one showed up in the next hour you would go outside in the infernal rain and start looking. Glancing down at the scroll you held you see a few names. Gunther, Stings, Elkin, Aelbric etc, etc.. You memorize the names as you ensure your pouch of gold for accepting the mission was still at your side.

The wizard that had sent you here had mentioned your employer's name, Balarok. You had never met the man but the gold was good and you finally got to leave the grumpy traveling caravan that stopped to the north of Orlane. Having made your way from the large city of Hookhill you weren't used to all this farmer talk and comfort. You could get used to this! As you pull your plate forward you hear the innkeeper greet someone with a "How are you?" outside. The windows and doors were open and it was easy to hear.

The room itself was very large, nearly 100' x 100'. A door in the east wall led to the outside porch. There were tables and chairs which were half filled with townsfolk and a door to the south led to the kitchen area. There was a spiral staircase as well in the northeast corner of the room.

You are inside the Inn of the Slumbering Serpent. You arrived about a few hours ago and have ordered a breakfast from a Ollwin Cralloon. The establishment's owner it seems. A very lively and talkative man, you had intended on speaking to him after getting together with the rest of the group. You have not gotten a room yet. You were just settling down to eat.

There was no mal intent intended in my post Hammer. I think you are doing a fabulous job. I just wanted to remind you that you couldn't post other people's actions even if you are the leader.

Its no problem with the cart, just wanted to clarify that its just a flat cart and nothing you could hide in.

There is no reason to apologize about anything. I wasn't trying to come down on you or anything. I just didn't want others thinking that you were being a rules lawyer and sometimes when you remind people over and over about something it could possibly be taken the wrong way.

I think you are doing a bang up job.

As for the leader of the group. Basically the leader of the group is going to be the spokesperson for that group when interacting with the game. For instance: You all decide what you want to ask the mayor here as a group. But being the group leader you would be the one doing the asking, interacting with the mayor etc.. The others could of course ask their own questions as well, the leader is just the person who is going to interact with the game after discussing what will be done here.

The only problem with posting other people's actions is this. Lets say you post that they hid in the cart. But they didn't really want to hide in the cart. Then someone saw them hiding and blamed them as spies or whatnot. Then the player can say, "well I didn't say I was going into the cart! That was Hammer!" It avoids all of that mess. You can post advice to the others in the game to hide in the cart but the players themselves will have to say that is what they are going to do.

Everyone is doing a great job and I will post tonight the next portion of the adventure.

I know you are excited about the game bro, but you really don't have to post about how to post and go over the rules over and over again. I know your trying to help out, but the best way is just to let people post and I will make the short corrections if needed. It seems about every 5 or 6 posts you keep reminding people about what I have already said in prior stuff. Its ok just relax a bit and let the game flow.

Hammer, don't make posts concerning other players. You can suggest that they hide in the cart (which is impossible by the way), but don't post that is what they do. You can't control any other players in any way during the game.

The cart is basically just a flat cart with two wheels, there is no where to hide.

Subject: Ok, Here is what I have..

Group 0 - Deathstalker - I am going to update his post with the farmers. Everyone else will be a bit behind Deathstalker as he left when group 1 went into the inn. So I will make his post first.

Group 1 - Gunther, Sentinal, Fandil, Oriel - to the Mayor taking the east road. - Gunther will be the spokesperson for the group, but I would still like to see everyone post whenever they can and make input. Sometimes being led by a paladin could be a bit of trouble for various reasons. I have specific posts from Gunther and Sentinal in the game itself. Fandil and Oriel are going to be generic until they post in game. Posting in the Q&A is fine but until your character reacts in game it will be hard to see/tell what your characters are doing/thinking etc. It makes it hard for me to get a feel for your characters. I would like to know if the group is just going to make a beeline and not stop and look at other houses, or will they interact with anyone they see? Etc..

Group 2 - Aelbric, Doogan, Elkin, Katai - This group will be wandering the town. I need to know the direction you want to take be it north or east. Katai has been the only person to post for this group so far therefore is now the leader of said group ;-). From what I gather you will be doing a close inspection of each landmark/home in the town. I have yet to hear from Aelbric, Doogan or Elkin in the game itself. Again all 3 will basically be genericlly played until they post in game.

Group 3 - Kyuss, Haiden, Stings and Valerus - This group will head to the Temple via the North road. Again I would like to know if you are going to interact as you go, or just look at the buidlings as you pass. Currently I have heard from every player in the game which is great, although its tough to get a feel for your character with one liners ;-). Kyuss is the leader/speaker for this group until Valerus returns (in game).

Group 4 - Shadowdragon. I will be making a seperate post for you in the game. Look for it after I reply about the ones above.

If I have all of this right let me know. I pieced it together the best I could from the posts here and the ones in game. I will begin posting probably tommorow sometime if everythign looks ok.

Subject: Combat

Just a few questions.

I'm curious to know how combat will work. Will we run a round of combat for each post, and thus, run about 2 rounds of combat a week? For big battles where everyone is involved, that doesn't seem too bad. But for small skirmishes, I'd hate to see 75% of the group wait for weeks while a smaller group swings and misses attacks round after round

On a related note, will there be opportunities to resolve minor or incidental side-encounters offline? For example, if 2 of the party members are split from the group and have an encounter before rejoining, will there be an option of minimizing the waiting time of other players by handling the encounter via IM?

Will there be a "cutoff" or a "run date", where everybody who's gonna post will have posted? I kinda like this idea, as it helps keep all posters' expectations, slow and fast, in check. Also helps in setting a mental clock for when to check back in.

Combat will work round by round. What I will do is have everyone post what they are going to do the first round AND post what they want to do the entire combat if indeed they aren't able to post frequently.

i.e. Joe the Cleric: I am going to draw my mace and shield and attack with the initial group, the orc (#4) on the left will be my first target.

As the battle continues Joe will continue to attack the orcs closest to him but also scan the battlefield. If he notices anyone injured badly or hears screams of comrades he will fall back defensively and try to get to the injured and cast Cure Light Wounds.

That way if Joe can't be there for the 2nd or 3rd rounds of the combat I will have an idea of what he wants to do.

The combat rounds will be quicker than the regular posting. I will usually post the combat rounds 1 round per night or every other night for really large scale battles.

As far as the incidental stuff out of the main group it will be handled just as the main group is handled. I will post it simultaneously.

Basically this is a forum for you guys to discuss what you are going to do, but then you should post what your character is doing in the game itself. No the group didn't hear the woman yell. I was just putting some flavor into the posting. There are many sounds and sights going on and a light rain. The woman didn't necissarily scream, but did yell for her husband loudly.

Deathstalker II

"Why are we waiting?" Deathstalker thought to himself. Pacing a bit, he finally made a decision in his mind. "I am just going to do some scouting, heck with it." Taking up his belongings he cinches everything in place to ensure it fits properly then walks over to the dwarf Doogan. After a few quick words and telling him that he is going to check out some of the town, he heads off with axe in hand.

Not really sure what a farming town was all about Deathstalker would have to wing it. Weren't there supposed to be like farmers all over the place at 4 AM or something ridiculous like that? Shrugging he quickly passed the two buildings at the beginning of town. To the north was the building the group of four had entered and to the south was where the girl churning something had quickly passed inside.

The next building to the south was fairly close to the first. It was a nondescript square wooden building that had heavy shutters closed over the windows. The door looks stout, but stands open. No one was visible from the outside and you hear nothing. Behind the small but sturdy building is another long, low structure.

A fork in the road comes up next and Deathstalker veered slightly to the southeast and took the easterly path. To his left is an obviously large inn. This large wooden inn is decorated with carvings of sheaves of wheat along the eaves of the roof. The inn was whitewashed at one time, but much of the paint has peeled. A sign picturing a cluster of wheat and a pitcher of beer or ale hangs over the door. A corral and stable, apparently empty, are off to the side. Deathstalker makes a mental note of the inn and continues at a steady pace.

To the south of the Inn stands another small sturdy building. A sign with a spinning wheel and a loom hangs outside and several bales of wool are stacked on the wide porch. No people are visible either outside the Inn or outside the southern building. Trudging forward Deathstalker quickly comes to another small building to the south. This one is definitely different than most of the ones he had seen. A gem-encrusted ring is pictured on a sign outside of this establishment. The doors and windows are all open. The building is small, but looks extremely sturdy; the shutters and doors are of heavy wood, reinforced with iron bands.

A small pathway leads off the road to the north to another house with a large barn and stable in the back. This is an exceedingly run-down structure for sure. Probably the worst he had seen yet. Faint traces of a former paint job cling to small parts of the walls, but in some places the bare wood has started to rot. A fenced walkway leads from the road to the back of the house, and horse manure is scattered liberally about. A little boy, his face covered with dirt, is playing on the front porch. As you approach, he toddles out to the road, smiles, and says “hi!” Almost immediately a sun parched, middle-aged woman comes rushing from the front door of the house. "SAMUAL!!" She rushes out and grabs the toddler by the upper arm and drags him backwards towards the house. She sees the warrior and glances nervously at the axe and yells out, "KILLIAN!!" In a shrill voice, likely to be heard for miles and without waiting to see what the warrior would say or do slams the front door of the house and enters. From the back near the barn a burly farmer comes rushing towards the front of the house, pitchfork in hand. He climbs immediately to his porch and watches as you walk eastward, his face shows no fear as two other young men appear from the front of the house, both holding thick loaded crossbows. They move over beside the farmer who calls out, "What are you about?"

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Group 1 (Oriel, Gunther, Sentinal and Fandil)

Taking the queue from Gunther the group enters the farmers home. A feeling of warmth oozes throughout the small building and it is good to get out of the light rain. A look around the room shows that you are in a central room of the house. Two curtained entrances are at the north and east of the room. The only person visible is a rather plain looking woman who is setting out small clay crock ware on the thick table in the center. Holding his arm out he motions for the group to have a seat at the table. Looking at the halfling and gnome he bows nervously. "We dun have many of tha little folk hereabouts. We have made up a few booster chairs fer the youngins if ye are willing." He motions towards the side of the table where two booster seats for young ones are at the side. No children are present.

Sentinal looks about and says, "Where are the children; I just love playing with kids. They are more my size." The man shakes his head and looks suspiciously at the halfling and says, "They are predisposed. They have work ta do."
After everyone is seated (or standing) the tea and cheese is quickly brought out. The cheese is wonderful and the tea is a bit spicy but otherwise of good stock. While the paladin prays to his god the farmers are respectful and bow their heads slightly. They then turn and listen as the paladin begins to talk.

"Friend Norwell, our group has assembled together from a variety of backgrounds and regions. We only recently met while resting in Hochoch and chose to travel together as a matter of safety and companionship in an unknown land." Gunther paused once again to speak a blessing of thanks for the hospitality and the food and drink being set before the guests, allowing everyone to either agree or invoke their own particular deity for the hospitality bestowed upon them before proceeding.

"Some in our group are searching for suitable land to purchase with the hope of settling down and raising families in a good community." At the talk of settling and raising families the farmers nod eagerly. "There be plenty of lands round here. No need to purchase much I am assumin, you kin talk with our mayor and I am sure he would be glad to get you and your friends started. Plenty of prime land hereabouts."
Gunther paused again to allow his companions to either nod or respond in agreement.

"As for me," Gunther smiled broadly, "I too am looking for suitable land to build a small castle to someday raise a family of my own and to help provide my neighbors with suitable protection from any unforeseen danger that may find its way to our community." The farmer nearly choked on the cheese he was eating at the word castle, then smiled broadly. "No castles round here. Grounds too soft fer big stone like that. This is farmin land, nothin else. We don need no lairds round here. We have our own rules."

The young Paladin focused on Norwell to discern what effect his words were having, his intent being to send a message to Norwell Graven that Gunther and his companions were ready to assist the farmer, his family and his neighbors if any danger was lurking nearby.

"We chose to come to Orlane because we heard from other travelers that the land here is some of the most beautiful and productive to behold ... and truly what we heard about this fertile land was but a shadow of its true bounty."
At this point an elderly lady comes in from the north curtain and gets a jar from one of the many cabinets. She curtsies to the group and enters back through the curtain where you can hear her say "Shush!" and a few of what sounds like girls giggling.

Gunther paused for a generous bite to eat and a drink of tea. He praised his hostess for some of the best tea he had ever tasted before calmly stating matter of factly:

The woman blushes and thanks the paladin. "We also heard some wild tales that good farm property has been abandoned for seemingly no reason at all and about people in Orlane disappearing into thin air and mysteriously reappearing later. We also heard that some people just vanish, never to be seen again. My companions and I decided that what we heard was just rumors to scare people away from Orlane who might otherwise be interested in buying good property here. We think someone or a group of people just want to buy all this fertile land for themselves and are trying to scare strangers and investors away from Orlane so they can corner the market for their own greedy purposes." At these words the farmer and his wife get a bit uncomfortable and start to sigh. "Yes, it is true there has been trouble lately here. We dun know what is goin on, but some things are awful strange like. Some people just up and left! Right in the middle of supper and never came back. Left their animals and all. Or just left stores closed and never returned.. We never heard of no one coming back though. After the initial problems of people leavin we try to keep to ourselves and our girls.

Gunther took another bite and washed it down with the tea before finally adding:

"From the way your children and your neighbor ran inside your houses when we came peacefully walking along the road ... it would seem that something may not be quite right in this community. Is there anything we can do to help?" The farmer shrugs his shoulders. "I wish I could tell ya! I don't know nothing about whats goin on. I am sure we would be right happy if you could figure it out, but I am afraid we can't be of any help to ye."

Gunther and his companions ask which inn is the best in town and which merchants or farmers can give the best price for their products? The farmer nods and says, "There are two inns in town, The Golden Grain Inn is a bit more expensive and uppity of yan ask me. Then there is the Inn of the Slumbering Serpent. Now thats a fine inn. Very nice folk and reasonable in prices." Taking a sip of tea he says, "There is also a village store east of here at the south corner of the road south of the stables."

Is the town safe for strangers, who actually runs the town [both formally and informally] and who exactly can be trusted? The farmer shrugs again, "Everyone can be trusted I recon. I am not sure whats goin on. No one really runs the town but the elected and right Mayor Ormond lives at the south of the lake in the big house there."

Is there any truth to the wild rumors of people disappearing? "From what we heard they just up and leave ya."

How is the fishing in the lake and is there property available bordering the lake? "There are a few fish I recon. Not sure about any property fer sale."

Have there been any cattle or livestock reported mutilated or missing? "Not that we heard of no."

Have there been any reports of homes being broken into or property damage? "I dunno."

What are Norwell's thoughts about these wild rumors and if people have indeed been disappearing when did this all begin happening? "Not sure really, bout a few months ago I recon."

Some general questions about any local temples, the "good old days in Orlane" and about the town in general? 'Most of us worship the goddess Merikka, goddess of Agriculture. We are good folk that don't go botherin other people."

Why are the fields and food so prosperous if indeed people are disappearing? "Its the soil. It comes from the wetlands to the south and a combination of the dry soil from the Dim to the north I would guess. Nothing special about it except it is great quality for farming. I don't know why anyone would leave."

Does Norwell have any family or friends that he would like Gunther to visit to make sure they are safe and where's the best and safest place to get food, drink and rest? "Naw, all I got are here with me and my daughters. We are fine."

Gunther also offers Norwell 5 gold and a promise of protection for his cooperation in answering the questions before the young Paladin and his companions graciously excuse themselves to reunite with Valerus Cain and the rest of the party to deliver their report. “It was a pleasure ta meet you. No need ta pay me anythin. It is good to hear from the outside world sometimes.” The farmer shakes the hand of the paladin and moves back into his house.

++++++++++++++++++
Kyuss

Kyuss decided to check out the barn if he could. He wandered over to take a look at the cows outside of the house. Everything looked normal. The cows looked fit and the barn door was wide open. Nothing untoward could be seen or heard. Everything looks perfectly normal so he moves back to the group.

OK the group is back together except for Deathstalker who is walking down the eastern road.

It is an action. You must be holding onto your holy symbol and concentrating. I am not trying to be a penis here, I am just going about the playing of a paladin the way I think it was intended.

You can't just walk around with full concentration and intent 24-7. It just isn't going to happen. You actually have to be holding your holy symbol and concentrating in a certain direction for a full round. That means no talking, no acting non challant. You will be actively praying to your god and concentrating in an area to see if you determine the intentions of evil.

It is a great ability, but one that cannot be used 24-7 unless that is all you plan to do.

Feel free to post in game however and whenever you want as long as it is relevent. If you are not currently doing anything, you can post what your character is doing, or watching for or whatever you like, sure thing.

All I meant in prior posts is try not to post 10 tiny posts about what your character is doing, instead of 1 lengthy post. Then let others post for a bit so we can get the gel going back and forth rather than 1 person posting a ton ya know?

Subject: Norwell Graven

After turning from the group discussion and nodding, Valerus sends the four members of the group towards the farmer and began to scan the area along with the Halfling Haiden. There was really nothing that he hadn't seen in hundreds of similar farming communities. The crops seemed to be healthy and full. The sounds, smells and sights were all there. It looked to be a normal, albeit very rich and abundant, farming town. The curtains at the house to the south of the road keep moving, like people are watching from the inside.

Kyuss moved towards the back of the group after the discussion had ended. He felt more at home with animals than he did with people sometimes. The donkey wasn't actually a "poor" animal. He was an extremely healthy and youthful beast that was actually a credit to his kind! He enjoyed the scratching below his left ear and the feed bag was well received.

The group of four adventurers nodded towards Valerus in agreement and started moving towards the farmer and his barn. Gunther had his shield out and his weapons sheathed as he moved forward. The house and barn themselves were nondescript, whitewashed sturdy buildings. Not too rich and not too poor, just a sturdy good build. As the group neared the farmer moved onto the porch of his house and towards the door where the girls had gone. Finally he stood his ground in front of the door on his porch and as the group got closer he held out his hand in the stop gesture before they reached the porch, "Kinna help ye?"

Gunther and the group spread out a bit to appear less threatening and meandered up in a casual way. The paladins right hand reached up to grip his holy symbol briefly as he attempted to feel any evil or malcontent in the area. Nothing that he could sense in the limited area he was in made him feel any different so he moved on, his boots squishing lightly in the wet soil. The rest of the group were slightly behind the paladin and all stopped right off of the porch when the man spoke. Sentinel the Small was on guard and his eyes darted to the left and the right at the shadows as well as the barn door and the ranger Oriel's eyes moved towards the barn door as well. Neither saw anything out of the ordinary as the paladin began to speak.

The paladin smiled his most winning smile and attempted to sound as cheerful as possible. "Good day my friend! May I purchase some of your finest milk, cheese and fresh vegetables for my companions and myself?" The man blinked a minute with a confused look on his face, "We's a stock farmin community. We store up in bulk and caravans come purchase our wares. Don have no individual portions of foods ta sell ya so keep yer money." He said this in a polite manner, with no sound of scorn to his lips.

Gunther pocketed the gold he had been ready to pull out as he realized his error. "Please allow me to introduce Oriel Blackmoon, Sentinel the Small, and Fandil the Wise." He pointed to each individual as he went down the line, naming each of them.

The man looked the group over and nodded to each. "Pleased nuff ta meet ya. If ya came for puchasin cheese and the like I am sure ya can get it at one of da inns in town, der are two of em." The suspicious glances he threw the part started to fade as the paladin's smile wore on him and he seemed to nod to himself about some inner turmoil.

"Sorry fer my hospitality, we are a little wary of strangers and don't see many out here." Turning his back on the group he swung open the sturdy door, "Sarah! Put some tea on and git da cheese out!" Holding the door open and using an inviting arm he nodded politely, "If ya would like some tea and cheese yer welcome ta come in out of da rain. My name is Norwell Graven."

The man looked at the rest of the group in the distance while he held his door open and and remarked, "Where ya comin from yerselves?"

Ok as of this moment the 4 party members Gunther, Sentinal, Oriel and Fandil are all standing right off of Norwell's porch at #4. The house is on the right and the barn and pen is above and to the left of the house. Each square represents 10' so from the front door of the house to the barn is about 25' or so. The rest of the group and their wagon is on the road at the "t" in the word To Hochoch.

Subject: A few notes

I will post later tonight to give people a chance to come in and post as well.

Also going to post a bit about a few things people may not know or wondered about.

Paladin Detect Evil INTENT The name of the paladin ability is Detect Evil Intent. A lot of people think that this means you detect a persons alignment but that is far from the case. You could have a chaotic evil person standing right in front of you drinking ale and you would detect nothing. Why? Because at the time that person has no evil intentions. You are detecting evil intent in characters or creatures. Now there may be some overwhelming evil creature like an ancient red dragon that would constantly exude evil 100% of the time because of the vile and evil that it has done and will do forever, but that is not the case most of the time.

The only thing you will be able to determine using this ability is the intentions of someone getting ready to commit evil. i.e. if a group of orcs was moving towards you but you weren't sure if they were going to attack. If thier intentions were to attack or commit an evil attack it would show. Or if the group of orcs was intending to pass you by, but rape and kill the group of nuns at the inn they were walking to, that would also show. If the group of orcs were just going to go to bed after a long day of pillaging, that would NOT show. Its all about intentions. Yes the orcs are evil. Would it show up in the paladin ability? No.

Hopefully that helps people understand the ability a bit better.

Weapon Specialization. I think I mentioned this before but I will bring it up again. Weapon Specialization was meant for WARRIORS only. Not rangers, or paladins or any other class. It was specifically made to get warriors to have an ability of their own. Paladins get their own powers, rangers theirs and so on. Warriors have no powers at all except for their skill at arms. Why make a warrior at all if you give the ability to specialze to a paladin? Or a ranger? A paladin could essentially be exactly like the warrior AND have all the cool abilites. That was not the intention of specialization. Its intention was to give warriors a bit of an edge in combat, which it should.

What else.. I think there was something else I wanted to put but can't remember right now..

You guys are doing great.

This is exactly how to do the Board postings. I do want to re-iterate things however. Remember!!! When you split up into your little groups (if you decide to). Your characters CANNOT offer suggestions to other groups. Nor can you. If you see a group going into an obvious trap or doing something that you don't like, guess what? If you are not with that group, you cannot and should not respond either in IM's, emails, etc.. That is what makes this game so fun.

Also, people may have played or been on this particular adventure before. Please, please please, I beg you do not push the group in a certain way if you know the outcome of an action or situation. I realize it is a hard thing to do, to play along, if you already know the outcome. But I WILL be watching for those things. And if I see it, bad, bad things may happen to you ;-) I would love for the people who have never played this adventure to be able to find out every little twist and turn and suprise. I am not saying you can't act normal and play and have fun, but if you k now the outcome of a situation, try to let the rest of the group figure it out if you already know.

For instance. Not saying this is in the adventure but if you all are walking down a hallway and no one is aware of anything and there is a cunning trap coming up or a group of orcs around the corner in ambush. And all of a sudden someone speaks out. Humm, my guy all of a sudden goes to the back of the group and gets in a defensive stance. Or My guy just out of the blue decides to halt the group and check for traps all of a sudden. You gonna pay ;-)
