Subject: Hey - nice newsletter :)

Hello all, hope you are all well.
It's great to see an active community is still thriving here. It made my day to see the newsletter drop into my inbox but I got 3 copies for some reason...?
Anyway, wish I could join in again but I haven't got time - I look after my 15 month old boy by day and study astrophysics by night; there aren't enough hours in the day!
Take care all, I'll drop by again soon

Stardate: 2366.10.22
USS Discovery
Main Engineering; CEO Office 1347hrs

Katrina put her head in her hands and rubbed her temples. The stress of the day was finally beginning to hit her.

So far, her schedule had been hectic to say the least.

She'd had a meeting with her head engineering staff, and as a consequence needed to choose an aCEO and another member of staff.

Lt. Maguire had delivered the list of candidates as promised and she scrolled through their names on the P.A.D.D. However, Maguire had made an impression on her in the meeting this morning and Katrina though that, out of everybody, he was probably the most suitable.

Katrina placed the P.A.D.D. on her desk. After her meeting with the staff, she had been called to meet with Captain Blair. Her first impressions of the man hadn't been wrong. He was easy-going and fair, although it seemed to her as if he was still trying to find his feet in the role of Captain.

The day's most greulling meeting had to have been the briefing this morning. The prospect of meeting a terrorist cell on Discovery's first mission with Kat as CEO didn't do much to relieve her stress.

The obvious way around the vaccine transporter problems would be to send the supplies down via shuttle craft. However, there would be contamination issues if containers weren't sealed properly, or broke or anything else that might go wrong, went wrong. Murphy's Law wasn't a law she was particularly fond of. She also considered re-routing power to boost shields of the shuttle crafts, just in case. She desperately needed to speak to Dr. White, yet she had been unable to meet with him after the staff meeting. The best she could was to wait for him to see her.

The chiming sound snapped her back to the present.

"Enter," she said, admitting Lt. Bob N’Doog into the room.
He was an 'interesting' character, and one that she certainly had to get used to. As long as he does his job, we'll get along fine Kat thought as the Catullan proceeded to speak what she considered to be gibberish and handed her a P.A.D.D. with (what Katrina slowly translated to be) modifications to Discovery's computer systems. Bob had left only moments before with a fleeting "Commanderdude" statement not to before the door chimed again.

"Enter," she called, expecting Bob to be back with something else and pleasantly surprised to see the TCO MacTavish stood at her door.

He smiled at Kat and said, "Aft’rnoon, Commander Waldgrave. I ‘ope I’m no’ interruptin’ anythin’."

"Of course not," Kat said, returning the smile. "Please, take a seat." She motioned him to come further into the office. "What can I do for you?"

“Grand, I apologize fer no’ gettin’ doon here ta speak wi’ ye sooner, Cmdr Waldgrave, but thing’s’ve gotten a wee bit crazeh ‘round ‘ere this marnin’."
Too right. I bet it's been crazy, Katrina thought. The whole ship was a-buzz about an incident the previous night involving a certain Ensign Anthony Drummond; admiral's nephew and a member of her staff.

"I reckon ye’ve been in place long enough ta notice tha’ there’s been some mods made ta Discovery’s weapons an’ defensive systems, aye? I dinnae know ef yer lads’ve given ye th’ detailed brief on any o’ tha’ as yet, so I figgered I’d pop in an’ see ef there be any questions ye might need addressed from the TAC perspective. Yer predecessor an’ I wairked fairly close onna mods, y’see…”

“I have indeed noticed,” Waldgrave replied, smiling across the desk at him, "Although it doesn't seem too off the wall, so to speak."

Mac nodded and returned that smile; “O’ course, th’ mods’re nothin’ vera complex, ye’ve noticed, but they c’n be a wee bit tricky when et comes ‘round ta calibration an’ sech. Th’ primary dorsal an’ ventral arrays’ve been wairked aboot ta give us a quicker cyclin’ rate,” he explained, “Et cost us a wee bit o’ output – somethin’ inna neighborhood o’ point one megawatts per emitt’r, which gives us aboot ten megs per shot as ‘posed ta ten point two – but we’ve th’ advantage o’ crackin’ off th’ shots quicker so th’ power loss dinnae be much o’ a consairn.

Commander Avanti headed up th’ shield modif’cations,” Mac continued offering a faint shrug, “an’ I’m still no’ entirely sure what exactly ‘e did ta get ‘em ta do et, but he managed some hocus-pocus wi’ th’ emitters tha’ gives us a lit’le finer control o’er the shields… I’m sure tha’ Avanti prob’ly left copious notes onna subject an’ ye’ve go’ a number o’ lads on yer crew wha’ ‘ad a hand innit. Fer tha’ matter, there’s several o’ my lads tha’ wairk th’ tubes wi’ yers, so, ef ye find somethin’ tha’ dinnae seem ta make sense ta ye, someone aroon’ here’ll be able ta answer yer questions… ef no’, lass, ye jus’ call me an’ I’ll get thengs squared away fer ye, aye?”

Kat nodded and took brief notes as Jack ran through the mods with her.

"Well, thank you very much for that," Katrina said standing. "Its good to finally speak with you properly."

She smiled and shook his hand. "I'll speak to you soon."

Alone.

She quickened her pace as the thick fog rolled around her her long elaborate skirts. Shivering she wrapped her long coat around her for protection from the cold of the night and glanced behind her. As far as she knew, she wasn't being followed. The flickering gas lamps that littered the streets failed to light more than a few footsteps in front of her.

Alone.

The rendezvous location was marked by a red ribbon attached to a wrought iron bench on the corner of Camden Road and Murray Street. She found it easily and sat on the bench beneath the large oak tree whose leaves had just started to turn golden.
She pulled the scrap of paper that detailed the location out of her pocket and studied it, the intricate script failing to give away anything of its writer.

Camden Road, red ribbon, 12.30am

"Punctual," a husky voice whispered in her ear causing her to launch out of her seat. "I like that Lady Katrina..."
Katrina spun to face the speaker.
"Why am I here?" she demanded glaring at the cloaked figure that spoke to her.
The cloaked figure gestured towards the bench. "I think you know why you are here milady..."
An sense of fear washed over Katrina as took the seat, her head bowed in acceptance.
"Yes..." she said softly as a tear ran down her cheek, "I know."
A low rumble of sinister laughter emanated from behind her as a cold hand grabbed her chin and forced her face to one side.
"Good bye, sweet Kat..."

Katrina bolted upright in her bed, the thin grey regulation sheets sticking to her naked form as sweat ran down her back and chest.

"Computer, time!" she commanded tersely.

=/=The time is zero-six-two-nine hours.=/=

"Thank you," she sighed as she dug her knuckles into her eyes. Rising from the bed she papped softly over to the replicator.

"Computer, coffee, hot. Black, one sugar."

It had been a while since she'd had The Dream. She didn't know why it came at certain points of her life, it just did. She had tried to rationalise it and she'd figured that it was her subconscious mind reminding her that she was actually, mortal. And then she ignored it.

She rubbed her forehead as she sipped the coffee. It was going be a long day, and definitely not easy.

She placed the empty cup back on the replicator plate and shook out her hair, trying to shake out the memory of the dream.

Katrina strode to the bathroom and stepped in the shower. It was definitely going to be a long day.

"Thank you all for coming," Katrina said glancing around at the eager fresh faces of her inherited Head Engineering staff as she spoke to them in level tones.

"I'd just like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Katrina Veronica Waldgrave and I've recently transferred from the USS Venture to Discovery to become your new CEO."

Katrina paused for a moment for questions. None forthcoming, she continued. She'd practiced this speech countless times during her journey on the Valmont yet was surprisingly nervous about meeting her staff.

"I demand a lot from Engineering Staff because the ship demands a lot. Engineering is a pivotal department and everyone aboard depends on us. I demand a lot, but I’m fair and open to suggestion.” Katrina smiled to soften her words. “And I’m not a complete ogre, my door is always open.”

Polite chuckles echoed round the room.

“Its because of this dependency, I’m to change the shift pattern for all staff from the ship’s standard. From tomorrow morning, all shifts will start one hour earlier than usual.”

She paused and bit her bottom lip, an unconscious use of body language that betrayed her nervousness.

“The day shift will start at 0700 and finish at 1500 and consequently all other shifts will follow suit. This is a system that I have worked under for three years and I believe it to be an efficient use of Engineering’s resources. Now, practically, this means that tonight’s Night Shift will work an hour less than usual but I’m sure we’ll be able to make up the time at some point.”
Katrina sat back in her chair. “Any questions?”

OOC: the only person I expect to be there is Bob?

Katrina responded to their questions as best she could, trying to keep up the confident face she was attempting to portray.

"For now, I expect a full and detailed list of all modifications to ships systems by midday and I'll call an Engineering meeting this afternoon."

Katrina smilled once more and stood.

"It's been a pleasure meeting you all. Dismissed."

Katrina watched as her staff filed out of the room. The meeting had gone far better than she'd hoped and she was pleased.

=/= Commander Gavison to Commander Waldgrave=/=

Katrina tapped her combadge. "Waldgrave here. What can I do for you commander?"

=/=Commander, please have a report ready on the feasible means for transporting the vaccine to the surface of Aldor V.=/= Came the response.

Transporters was her immediate thought.

=/=Please consider the possibility of transporter difficulties… and you may want to follow up with Dr. White concerning the impact transporters might have on the vaccine—if any. Please have your report ready for our meeting later this morning. =/=

"Yes sir," she replied, "I'll speak with Dr. White as soon as I can."

=/=Thank you Commander.=/=

This is what she came into Engineering for - the thrill of working your way around a problem; modifying and inventing systems to provide a solution. Not micro-managing staff and politics.

Kat tapped her combadge, "Waldgrave to Dr. White."

OOC: Assuming she gets through.

"Would it be possible to meet with you after the staff meeting this morning?"

OOC: Assuming he can...

"Thank you doctor. I look forward to seeing you then."

Stardate: 2366.10.21
USS Discovery
Ten Forward – 2056

Katrina smiled as she took a seat to the left of the Captain at the exquisitely set dinning table in a cordoned off area of Ten Forward.

"Good evening, everyone, and thank you all for coming. I believe that you all know me, but this meal is of course for the benefit our new senior officers." Captain Noah Blair. Lean and strong he had kind blue eyes and short light brown hair. Kat had heard of his heroic achievements with the USS Osprey (she wondered if there was anyone in the quadrant who hadn’t!). He seemed an easy-going well-liked commander. More than can be said about her last captain.

"First of all, allow me to introduce our new Chief Engineer. Everyone, please welcome Lieutenant Commander Katrina Waldgrave," Captain Blair said, nodding towards Katrina.
She smiled, raised her glass and inclined her head slightly in a gesture of acknowledgement. “Thank you. You are all making me feel very welcome,” she said.

"Also, we have a new Ship's Counsellor,” Blair continued. ”Allow me to introduce Lieutenant Christoph Arevaci." She glanced down the table toward the well-built man; his long slim fingers the most startling thing about him.

"Now then I believe that you both met Commander Gavison, my XO. Next we have Lieutenant Jack MacTavish, our Chief Tactical Officer and Second Officer. Next to him is Lieuteant Tuvar, our Chief Security Officer."

Introductions take so long, Kat thought to herself idly, keeping a pleasant smile on her face as the introductions continued.

She’d not served with any of the staff sat around the table, which wasn’t surprising considering the size of Starfleet. She did, however, recognise Lieutenant Benjamin Raines, the muscle man with fair hair and blue eyes, although she didn’t know where from. She had a vague recollection of him from somewhere, but couldn’t place it.

"As you may know, we not only picked up new staff from the Valmont, but a doctor Joseph Milkens, as well. Doctor Milkens is carrying the supplies to manufacture a critically needed vaccine for Aldor V, to which we should arrive in a little less than four days. In theory, this is a simple delivery job; our task is merely to drop the good doctor and his materials off at the federation complex planetside. "

This was standard stuff, and an excellent opportunity to get familiar with the Discovery’s systems inside and outside Engineering. Unfortunately being good at your job wasn’t enough; you needed to play the political game on ships like these.

"Enough shop talk for now. Let us properly welcome our new comrades with an excellent dinner and a toast. To the Discovery!"

Katrina smiled and duly raised her glass of chardonnay. “The Discovery!” she chimed with the other officers around the table and sipped from the wine glass.

She was pleasantly surprised when she discovered the meal prepared had seemed to be in done so in her honour; a traditional English Sunday roast dinner, complete with Yorkshire Pudding and gravy. Unfortunately, she was unable to say that it was ‘just like mother used to make!’ since she had no recollection of ever having a mother. She’d figured it out years ago, the reason she thrived in Starfleet; the regimented organisation of your life was like a substitute for a family although sadly, Kat had never had a crew that felt remotely like a family.

“Commander Waldgrave,” said Lt. Raines.
She snapped out of her reverie and focused on the Lieutenant.

“I noticed in your file that you graduated from the Academy back in ’58. I’m class of ’61. I remember your Senior Engineering Project was amazing.” He smiled and poured himself another drink.

Katrina blushed slightly and grinned back remembering where she knew his face from, “Well I’ve always been interested in Warp Core Technology. It was the culmination of an idea I’d had during my first year and a result of the lecturer drumming stability into us during the first lecture.”

“It was risky, but the results were worth it.” She took a sip from her wine, looking over the rim of the glass at Ben Raines. There had been an attraction there, more one-sided (on her side) she’d thought at the time. And it wasn’t the done thing… and if she was honest, which she usually was, relationships had always scared her so she’d never taken the steps to get to know Raines.

OCC: any response? I’ll add to it if need be.

“So,” she said taking a sip from her glass, “I understand you are responsible for this fabulous Sunday roast?”
