Zombies in Chicago - D20 Modern

Okay, folks, here goes. I have resisted the urge to run this game for two years, now, but can ignore the siren song no longer.

Consider this the official recruitment thread for a modern day zombie infestation game.

Civilization as we know it ended a few weeks ago following an outbreak of a mutant virus that turns the living into slavering, vicious monsters - and denies the dead their rightful rest. These mindless vestiges of humanity are not the shuffling, clumsy oafs of the old zombie flicks, but terrifying, fast, and deadly killers, ala "28 Days Later" or "I am Legend".

I will be using a modified version of the D20 modern RPG as my rule base. Don't worry - you need know NOTHING about the rules to play! I need a party of four to six players who are interested in running for their lives, fighting when they must, all with the grim knowledge that it is more likely a matter of when, no if, they will perish.

Unless you give me an excellent reason otherwise, you will all start in the basement of a bar in Chicago, Illinois, where you have been barricading yourselves from the horror of the death throes of civilization. Sadly, while the alcohol supply is still going strong, the food stores are all but gone, and you must now face the very real likelihood that rescue is not coming. How will you proceed? Well, that's up to you.

If you are interested in joining, please keep the following in mind:

  • 1. This game may proove to be exceedingly lethal. Like any good zombie flick, one or more of you will almost certainly die. It is entirely possible that none of you will survive.

If you do die, you are free to rejoin the game as another survivor.

  • 2. To be considered for play, I need you to provide a brief character description - name, age, gender, physical appearance, profession, and a brief background/personality. Don't spend ages on this, since you may die quickly, but don't ignore it, either. Military and police backgrounds will make you a bit better with firearms than say, an average Joe, while a doctor or nurse will certainly be much better at first aid than the rest of the party. Use common sense.

  • 3. To be considered for a spot, please submit a realistic, normal person. Please do not send me character concepts for Jason Bourne type assasins, 6th degree black belts, super geniuses who can create mega weapons from junk, etc. I will make fun of you and delete your application.

This is not to say that you can't be skilled at something, or even at several things, but your ex-Navy SEAL, college professor, martial arts expert, photographic memory, olympic athelete won't get in the game. Please don't ask.

  • 4. If you decide to play, you are comitting to a minimum of one to two quality posts per week. By quality, I mean two to three short paragraphs. You don't have to write a novella every time, but please give me more than "My guy bashes the zombie in the head." Ignore this at your mortal peril.

  • 5. I have been known to flake out. Right now, my work shcedule is good, and I ought to be able to handle a little zombie bloodshed, but I may post slower than you may want to deal with, or need to take a week off every now and then. Consider yourself forewarned.

If you have further questions, please let me know. Otherwise, we will start as soon as I have enough approved character concepts.

You are an evil evil man...

This is SO super-cherry-on-top-mega-tempting let me tell you.

I've pulled out of all my other games right now though due to lackage of time/energy. Not sure I should be committing myself to something...

But perhaps I'll watch and if, *cough* when, you kill someone off I could maybe step in with someone...

M.

p.s. see how tempting this is, I'm already formulating a char idea... single mother bartender at the bar, with an employment history at more 'adult' entertainment bars... worried about her child who was being watched by her brother when the attack happened... and zombies better watch out, you'd be amazed what she can do with her legs especially if there is anything even resembling a pole around.

hmph

Turtle games? Yeah, that's strike one, and I don't even have the character in hand!

Meri - glad to know the dark side is getting you. We can always make you one of the first to die...

Alaster Smith

I'm thinking of a carpenter male, around 23 years of age, long brown hair. hes not muscly but hes not lazy as such. He is Great with wood, helping build barricades and such would be helpful in the trying times that we are in.

His background story includes that he was mostly a loner through life hasn't spoken with his parents or family of any sort for a long time and no present relations to tie him down to a given area. he has always known carpentering and nothing else although a good hunt is always OK for him. He is also quite the drunkard and cant fight the urge to take a nice gulp of some toxic alcohol this is how he ended up at the bar feeling it was the end of days he wanted to drink himself under the table to end his days only to find the small refuge of people hiding there.

okay...

So two definitely interested, and one player begging off to be a reserve.

Anyone else?

First draft?

Name: Emily Watson
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Occupation: Med. Studeny
Looks: Average-build, not very memorable. She has a kind face, and is fairly attractive, but plain. Emily had curly brown hair to her shoulders and chocolate eyes. She's tan (naturally), and has faded freckles on her arms and a few on her face. She's currently wearing plain blue jeans (with rips on the knees), a dark brown polo shirt, and Nike tennis shoes.
Iventory: Cell-Phone (Broken, she tripped and fell on it and now it won't turn on), Waller (Only has $13, a library card, and her driver's license)
Skills: Emily can cook a bit, and knows how to make a fire without matches. She also remembers several survival skills her father taught her when she was young; just your basic stuff, like boiling water and building a shelter first. She also knows first-aid, CPR, and has a pretty secure knowledge of the human body and organs.
Personality: Emily's very shy and uncomfortable around crowds. She'd not very confident in herself and tends to forget things when she's stressed, angry, or scared. Emily can also have random bouts of thoughtlessness, leading to her doing stupid things and harming others. Emily's prone to over-stressing.
Background: Emily was a very stressful person to live with, and often blew things far out of proportion. An only child, she got everything she ever wanted, but had high expectations and urealistic views on the world. After working her butt off in high school ad performing lots of extra-curricular work, she was accepted into Harvard, and decided to become a pediatric surgeon.
Emily was going home to Chicago to visit her parents when she heard about the 'zombies' on her car radio, but dismissed it. However, when she arrived, she found her house empty and her parents murdered. She had a panic-attack and broke down; when she awoke, she stumbled around until another survivor saved her from certain death and took her to the bar's basement. before Emily could ask him what all had happened, he vanished, and she joined the others down there in a daze. for the most part of their time trapped, Emily's been withdrawn, and has said barely ten words. She also hasn't been eating well, and it's apparent she's sick. She's been coughing alot, losing weight, and her complexion is almost grey; she also sleeps too much, and has a low fever.
Others: She has panic attacks if her stress level rises too high; during these periods, she hyper-ventilates, has heat flashes, and loses control over her actions.

Okay...

...looks like we oughta have a decent little crew of zombie-burgers going, here! Since the rest of you have posted up your character concepts, I figured I'd probably do the same... so, excerpted from the bit I sent The Boss... Heeeere's Tommy "Murph" Murphy:

Early to mid-30’s; 5’10”; 180 lbs or thereabouts; close-cropped brown hair (like a military cut that’s started to grow out), hazel eyes… Figure maybe this guy was in the service (regular Army or Natl Guard) and did a tour in Iraq or something (i.e. Tank mechanic or some such, so not an infantry type but familiar with pistols and rifles to a degree)… Came home and picked up a job at a local garage and is ‘just getting by’ these days; makes enough to pay rent on his tiny apartment, put food in his belly when he’s hungry, and leaves him enough left over to stop by the bar on his way home a couple times a week… He’s got an ex-wife and a kid that he wonders about way more often than he hears from or about them… I figure he’s dressed in work clothes (work boots, grease stained pants, and a shirt with the company/garage name on a patch over one pocket and a name patch that reads ‘Murph’ over the other. Probably has a folding knife in his pocket and a multi tool (leatherman) on his belt, a wallet with his ID, a worn picture of his ex and his kid, and maybe 40 bucks in it, a lighter and a pack of smokes in his shirt pocket and that’s about it (figure he might have a beater of a vehicle parked outside the bar with a toolbox or somesuch in it, but I don’t imagine he thought to grab any of that stuff before our group of survivors barricaded themselves in the basement…)

Personality wise, he’s probably a nice enough guy (a little rough around the edges, maybe, being used to hanging out in garages and bars and the sort of banter that goes on in such places) but, due to his stint in the service, has enough leadership skills (and experience in hostile territory) to not have really ‘cracked’ at what’s going on quite yet… probably got a pretty solid worry about his ex and his kid underlying things, though.

Psh!

I bet you say that to all the Eol's...

I'm looking forward to playing with you, as well, Princess. And Meri and Malek, too, of course... Like I said, an interesting little "starter group" we've got here... Curious to see how that group dynamic works out.
