Since y'all want a 4th ed game

Recently there have been quite a few attempts to start 4th ed games, all of which have fizzled rather anticlimatically.
With this in mind I'm happy to start a 4th ed game of my own (I'm fine GMing both this and Flux Wars).

I was thinking of a Dark Fantasy setting that alternates between dungeon and wilderness combat. However I'm happy to change depending on the wants of my players (D&D is all about the players after all).

I'm happy to allow all races except possibly Shardminds (they're too tied into the 4th ed book lore IMO but again, I'm happy to change if people want). I don't have any of the Power-specific books, however if people give me the details of some of the bonus powers then I'm happy to incorporate them.

Characters will start at level 4 and posting will be about 1nce weekly, although when the action picks up I might require posting to as well.

Waiting to see how many people are interested before I continue with info such as deities, ect...

So, now for some lore.

A shadow has fallen over the land of Lisaren. Across the kingdom, harvests fail, game dwindles and unrest brews. It is unsafe to walk along lonley roads or to stray too far beneath the boughs of the lands woods or to tread the untamed lands that lie to the west between the Great River and the Ironfront Mountains.
In concern the King has called upon the council of mages and augers as outside his palace walls fear grows. Desperate men have begun to speak of revolution as rumours spread from the east that the Border Lieges have cast off the Royal Authority, sending neither men nor gold in tithes to the King.
Four days into his council, a man strode through the gates of the capital, unarmed and unmarked, garbed only in the tattered accontroments of a vagabond. Alone, he strode to the gates of the palace, commanding them to open with the softest of words before declaring to the startled guards that he could end the darkness blighting the land.
Taken immediatley into the presence of the King, the man introduced himself and Mengral Wrydstorm and repeated his previous declaration. Intruiged, the King asked his price, to which Mengral responded that he would require the Royal Ring, an ancient heirloom of the kingdom that was rumoured to have been given to the Kings by Taros, the mortal incarnation of the God of Authority, so that they could rule with prescience and unfailing purpose throughout the ages.
Enraged, the King ordered Mengral cast out of his presence and into the wilderness, however as his guards rushed to comply the stranger whispered a second word and the entire court fell upon each other in a fit of madness that spread through the palace and into the city. In the ensuing chaos, Mengral sliped the Ring from the King's finger and vanished from the capital, the violence abating only after he dissapeared over the horizon.
Now with most of his seers and sages dead and his capital and palace in ruins, the King has ordered a hunt, calling any who deem themselves worthy and of 'unfailing purpose' to the capital where, it is rumoured, that he calls each applicant into a room with him alone. Some prospective heroes last five minutes, some three hours, but all have so far been turned down. Now, three weeks later, the influx of warriors has ebbed, and you await your turn with barley a dozen others in the royal chambers, nervously eyeing the black door through which hundreds of applicants have passed, only to be rebuffed in shame.

Count me in if you are ok with another noob =)

I do have some limited experience with 4e though, since I ran a couple of games not so long ago (but never actually took a role of a player)

Great!

Brilliant! I'm completley fine with beginners (they're often more fun to play with than crotchety old veterans like me).

Now for some more details:

Gods:

A diverse number of deities are worshipped throughout the land of Lisaren, and indeed across the world. I'll be using the 3rd Ed alignment system to categorise them (lawful good, lawful good, chaotic good...ect)

Lawful Good Deities

Taros:
The God of Authority, Taros is the patron deity of Lisaren who gives the ruling family their authority. His scripture is often studied in academies of learning rather than that of other Gods and almost every town has a temple to him.
Taros is the arch-enemy of the god Gharaz and often at differences with Myriene.
These are his commandments:
-Punish those who do not bow to authority, your lord should not have to tolerate lorebreakers and nor should you.
-Bow to the demands of your master, if his intent is evil authority will punish him.
-Ensure that your lands, whether they be a mere peasant's hovel or a mighty kingdom, be governed strictly but well, misuse of authority is the worst sin.

Erion
The Deity of Crusading and Noblility, Erion is widley worshiped by Lisaren's many noble houses, often by ambitious heirs or other sons or daughters who will often, as an impropmtu right of passage, assemble in ad-hoc teams and venture forth into the inhospitable lands to the west to bring back a bestial trophy. Apart from this Erion is worshipped by very few, save a few often deluded merchants who believe themsleves to be of noble stock (or at least worthy of it).
Erion issues these commandments:
-Right wrongs with your blade and lance, ride evil to the ground under the iron-shod hooves of your steed wherever it lurks.
-Conduct yourself in a manner as becomes a man or woman of noble birth, behave with decorum and moderation to your peers and fairly to your subjects.
-Do not let the luxury of your position blind you to the evil in the world, protect your subjects with your gallant deeds so that you have earnt your status as a noble.

Neutral Good Deities

Akiri
The sister of Erion, Akiri is the godess of the meek, the unfortunate and the destitute. It was her that was said to have founded the Norvale Beggar's Guild and bless the first female High Marshal, Jennira Feray, with her skills with the blade.
Akirki's commandments are few and simple:
-Always seek to help others in less fortune than yourself, every man, no matter his station, as smoething to give.
-Protect the lower elements of society; help them rise above their humble means.

Loran
The God of Life and vitality, Loran is the sworn enemy of the Cults of Sekhamor, the Covenant of the Buried Sun and of other necromancers. His shrines can often be seen at the mouth or in the depths of many of the ancient tribal and modern catacombs that the people of Lisaren bury their dead in and missionaries travel the land in his name, returning restless undead who wander from their crypts to the earth.
Loran commands thus:
-Let not the scourge of undeath taint the land, remain vigilant against the creatures of the grave lest you join their ranks.
-Hunt down the living who practice necromancy, to disturb the corpses of the interred is an abomination that no man should tolerate.
-Remain watchful for the Vampyres, nobles who have willingly drunk the unholy blood of Zenn’Akar and joined the ranks of his unholy disciples.

Chaotic Good Deities

Jael Stonefeather
The God of travellers and freedom, Jael was actually once a man with such wanderlust it was rumoured that he explored as far as the realm of the Gods themselves where he could not find his way back to the natural world and so became a God himself over many years’ exposure to Astral Essence. Whether this is a fanciful tale or the truth, none can say, and whatever the case many others have tried to reach this paradise and join the Great Traveller.
Jael doesn’t communicate much to his followers, instead urging them to be guided by their own feelings, however, these commandments of his are known:
-Always share what you can with your fellow traveller, whether you put a poor tramp up for the night or share a strip of meat with a fellow adventurer.
-Don’t let other people tie you down, but don’t eschew all other company, the open road isn’t much of a one for conversation.

Trysalen
The Godess of Spring, Trysalen is the patron of lovers and the servants of nature. Druids and Shamans evoke her name in their prayers, whilst many a young noblewoman has slipped her symbol into a lover’s room during the spring solstice, a ritual that is said to tie both lovers’ souls together for eternity…consequentially it is not uncommon for many young noblemen to spend their night picking silver glyphs from their bedclothes or sleeping on a rather uncomfortable pillow.
-Honour the balance of nature and life, whether you are a farmer, merchant or soldier, nature is still there in your heart.
-Do not hesitate to show your devotion to your true love, there’s nothing wrong with being open with your feelings.
-Cities are as much a part of this as the ivy that clings to trees, they leech of the land but are home to such an abundance of life.

Lawful Neutral Deities

Tath
The God of laws, Tath is worshiped most prominently by the Arbiters’ Guild of Dwindenwel. He has a strong alliance with Taros, and hence the Arbiters have great authority throughout Lisaren as judges and lawmen. Clerics, Invokers and Paladins of Tath are often chosen to head expeditions against bandit gangs, whilst it is not uncommon to hear of entire crime syndicates being discovered and shut down by the Just God’s Avengers.
Tath commands thus:
-Seek out lawbreakers and bring them to their judgement.
-Uphold the laws to the highest standard; you are an example for other men to follow.
-No man is a law unto himself, never meet out your own judgements, there is nothing worse than perverted justice.

Harin
The God of knowledge and patron of mages and scribes, Harin is renowned for his scrutiny of details, often taking days to examine a single word or sentence…as of such prayers directed his way are usually succinct and very direct. Harin is occasionally aligned with divination, however most priests of his deny this, saying that the future is an uncertain source of knowledge at best.
Harin commands thus:
-Accumulate knowledge above all else, a wise man is rich at heart.
-Denounce trickery and deceit; let your logic resist such ambiguities.
-Examine everything, a forgotten detail is an unacceptable flaw.

True Neutral Deities

Sel
No-one is entirely sure what Sel is God of, save that shrines to him can be found scattered across the land, often the focal points of incredible power. True worship of him is rare as all of the inscriptions on his shrines are written in Elvish but seem to use Dwarven grammar and, hence are intelligible. Some scholars suggest, however, that there is a pattern in the layout of his shrines, incomplete, but with each discovery, more becomes apparent. Others also claim that at the centre of this pattern lies the First Shrine of Sel, which holds the key to deciphering his cryptic scripture.

Chaotic Neutral Deities

Myriene
Myriene is the Goddess of fickle fortune and destiny. She argues that every man should have the right to his own fate; Gods like Taros shouldn’t bind them to a single destiny. Legend has it that Myriene let Jael Stonefeather into the Gods’ realm on a whim, as she took a liking to the roving vagabond.
She commands:
-Fight against destiny and probability, you are your own man.
-If something says go left then it wants you to go right.
-No law governs what number a dice will land on, don’t be the cautious man who always bets on a 1.

Toroque
The God of Vanity and selfishness, Toroque is often depicted as a great bird, half crow half peacock, preening his beautiful feathers despite his dirty black head and wings. Toroque is worshipped by both thieves (of whom he is patron) and the nobles and merchants they so often steal from. Both appeal to him as the former put their own desires above all else, and the latter put themselves above all else.
Toroque commands:
-Do not let others impede you, what do they know after all?
-Indulge neither in unnecessary cruelty or charity, why hurt others when you can help yourself and why help others when you can help yourself.
-If you want something, take it, just make sure you aren’t caught, your own safety is probably worth more…probably.

Evil-Aligned Deities:
As in the Handbooks, there is only a brief description of Evil Deities as worship of them is forbidden to greater or lesser degrees in Lisaren, if you want to make a character around one of them send me a PM so we can sort it out.

Lawful Evil:
Zheb, God of Greed
Sethia, Goddess of Vice, Patron of Courtesans

Neutral Evil:
Khalas, God of the Cruel and the Malefic
T’Huikon, God of Dark Magic (evil aligned magic), Patron of Blood Mages

Chaotic Evil:
Gharaz, God of Anarchy and Destruction
Valsur, God of Madness

Nice

Harin seems awesome enough =)

A question: Can anyone recommend some useful posts/threads/sites etc. to read to get a better understanding of how to play dnd through a forum? A skimmed through the archives of this site but apparently wasn't able to find the right info.

Thanks in advance!

Hmm...

I think you can acess character creators through the D&D insider (a friend of mine uses it). If you need help playing through forums, though or makinga character I'll be glad to help.

So, we've got a rogue, I'm not really too bothered about filling in 'roles' as such, although having a healer of some description...

As for character sheets, I don't mind whether you send me the actual sheet or not, just PMing me the details will be fine.

Control freak

Since we're calling dibs on character classes...

I'd really like to play a controller-type spellcaster (most probably a wizard) if that's ok by everyone.

EDIT:

2Takley: If I remember correctly, the offline wotc character creator is no longer supported, today it's all through the dnd insider. Still, versions with updates up to August are out there to grab and try, and that's most of the published books.

Which reminds me. Are there any limitations on character creation (e. g. PHB 2 ,3; other supplements)?

And they think you're the control freak...

The only limitation is that you can't play a Shardmind, and that you discuss with me powers from Divine Power, ect.

Okay, so, we've got a Rogue and a Wizard, as I said, send me the details when you're ready.

I may have time...

I just have a couple questions.

How often will you expect player posts? Weekly, or a couple times a week?

I am to assume all players will start at level 1?

If you have room for another player I`ll try to get something together. However I do warn you the next week is pretty tight for me. I have plans tonight until monday night...so tuesday on I should be back to my normal time slot. I have to make a post in my other game tonight though.

I don`t recall playing a 4e game, I`ve played 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5 though. Perhaps tonight if your online, or sometime we could talk about some of the other options. I just glimpsed over it, seems interesting enough so I will do some reading in more detail when I get back. I`m going out horseback riding.
