Bogus Innmates

I believe these are not true Innmates as they all have websites that lead to Vietnamese sites. There are more such "innmates" but these are from the last few days.

What do you class as not being a true innmate?

In these particular cases...

...it's due to the web site links in their profile (and the fact that they are ALL coming from Hanoi) that singles them out. They join, fill out a profile, and don't post anything. The content of the web sites they list, too, is, shall we say, questionable... Basically spammers with no actual interest in what we do here, just looking for clicks on their web pages (which could possibly lead to viruses or worse).

any ideas

of how to stop bogus Innmates from applying to the site itself? or ... no?

To be honest...

I don't think there is a way to stop them joining RDI in the first place, but t_catt11 can kick them off once (s)he sees them. What I'm saying is, how are we to know their true intentions as to why they've joined the site before they've even joined, or as soon as they've joined (if that makes sense). Just got to keep an eye out for them and, as I said, kick them off.
I don't know if this is possible because I'm not computer and website savvy, but can't t_catt11 create some kind of software for his or her site that alerts him or her if an Innmate hasn't posted anything for a while (like a couple of months or so). Then (s)he could examine that person's profile and determine wether or not they're a lurker, spammer or somebody else who is not a true member of the Inn. Could make locating these bogus Innmates easier. Just a thought.

yeah

I've looked before at killing inactice accounts, but there is seldom a need for that.

I need to perhaps beef up the CAPTCHA stuff that stops automated signups, but we get few of these - I feel like these are actual people signing up to link their spam, so it's super tough to prevent those.

I could maybe hide links in profiles that have no posts.

I've taken to simply deleting the links in their profiles when I ban them, these days.

t_catt11 & Eol

Hiding the links is good.

Eol- I thought that when you ban someone from the site their profile gets deleted anyway?

good idea

I like that, Eol.

Dragon-soul - banning removes your ability to see them.  However, someone could theoretically be banned from the site, but be allowed back eventually.  So they get removed from listings and such, but their record is not deleted.

This also prevents them from singing up again and again via the same email address.

So... say I get banned (please no! I'll be good lol!), other Innmates won't be able to see my profile, correct? You said that I'll be allowed back on eventually. Does that mean that the other Innmates will be able to see this profile again (the one I'm currently using)?
