Why Did you join the Inn?

Ok I'm curious. I see people joining the Inn all the time and I'm wondering how did you find the Inn and what made you join?

Was it the cool Dragon on our front page?

Was it our Webcomics page.

Was it a particular thread, person, or game?

I'll start off................

For me I was directed to the Inn in 2004 by an Innmate and former friend named Kyle. I knew Kyle in real life as we had first met when he answered a posted ad by me for players needed to join the table top version of the Trilogy War game back in 2000 along with Keeper of Dragons. In 2003 I was diagonosed with a non-cancerous brain tumor that needed to be removed quickly. Well after my brain surgery had left me temporally unable to speak or keep a long term focus on things, Kyle saw that the Inn would be a great place place for me to just hang out and play AD&D and help me learn how to get my brain working once more all without having to speak a word out loud. So everyday I walked 2 miles to the library, was not allowed to drive due to the surgery, to get on a free computer to go to the Inn and post in the games I had joined. There were quite a few, I think at one time I was in 7 games, 2 of which I was playing in with 2 different accounts.  Needless to say I'm still here so he must have been right and for that I will always be thankfull to him.

Ok so now its your turn what brought you here and why did you sign up?

I actually found this site by chance. I'm on another site called Quotev and they also do RPGs on there. I was making an elf character for a game but didn't know what to call him so I posted on my activity that I needed help to come up with a name for my elf. One of my followers replied to my post and said that he Googled fantasy name generators and RDI came up, which he gave me the link to.

I explored the site and saw that in a way it is similar to Quotev because you can roleplay. I've been a long time lover of fantasy and dragons and love to roleplay the fantasy genre, so naturally I joined RDI because it was just perfect for me.

And I'm real glad I did!

I was on a rpg-game-finder site, looking for an ttrpg to join in the Seattle area. Olan found me and asked if I wanted to join his Paranoia PBP game.

I was hooked pretty quickly after that.

An old friend of mine and I were using our school's "computer class" and our teacher's absolute lack of computer knowledge to spend school time looking up D&D resources shortly after the launch of D&D 3E as we were ~11 and couldn't afford the books. Somehow ended up in the old RDI chat and eventually ended up in a Super Mario themed 2e homebrew run by CaptainLou. Encouragement from soon to be staff member Admiral (we all had nautical rank usernames in the early 2000s?) got me into actual posting.

Shoutouts to Scarab, Valimar, Vilyamar, Jozan1, Lyskhala, Grey, Swan, the OG Hot Tub crew and probably dozens more I'm forgetting, another few dozens I shouldn't mention and any players who've played in my games or let me play in theirs with a special shoutout to the best gaming group ever. You know who you are and you're why I'm around.

Wellll....

I have an in with a certain rather well renown inn member. Honestly, I've known Bromern for all my life. In fact, I can say with the utmost confidence that the man basically raised me and is responsible for the person I am today. So he's the one to blame if anyone has any problems with me.

Yeah, when I was in 7th or 8th grade, Bromern asked if I'd like to create an account. Under the name of TsAh I joined. I was a part of a Star Trek game, but my young mind wasn't willing to consistently put up posts so I eventually faded from the Inn. A couple of years older, shortly after I had moved to the other side of the country for work, I decided that I wanted to play some more RPG and write some more. The RDINN killed two birds with one stone, and so I created a new account and joined a Cyberpunk game that Bromern was running.  That's how I ended up here.

Comics..........

I had started playing AD&D with our Scouts on campouts. We used the game to keep the boys from bringing hand held electronics.

Well that lead my interest in Web Comics. So in 2010 while looking for some I came across Loaded Dice. I started lurking and began to look over the rest of the site. Eol, PitFriend and others were so welocoming that I stayed. The word games and such was what I used to get use to the site. Kibitsing, puns and jokes in Common Room sites got me my "title" of Pundit. It hard to believe I've been here nearly nine years.

It's been so long, I honestly don't remember. Now, the Inn is part of my life.

As Giddy said, I've invited my children to join but Giddy is the only one to take me up on it.

@Brom

Wish my dad was a D&D geek like you lol. He's more into boring politics and watching fishing on TV...

Ummmm....

...I joined the Inn because a random cyclone dropped it on my hat. Then, when I dug out from under it, I found myself in a strange land, accompanied by curious creatures, who followed me on a quest to slay a wicked witch... I think....

may be confusing the details of my joining with the plot of the Wizard of Oz.

Another game needed a site

Way back in the 80s I played a play-by-mail game called Duelmasters - it was all about running gladiators in an arena.  I played it for years and then in college I gave it up for lack of funds.  Then in the early 2000s or so I decided to look up that game and see if it was still around - it was!  (And still is - I still the play the game, now called Duel 2 - 95% of the people that played it got hooked in the 80s when, like me, they were in junior high.)  At one point someone on that game's website suggested that a group of Duelmasters managers should do a play-by-post D&D game.  I love D&D but hadn't been able to play tabletop in many years so I jumped at the chance. One of those other managers scouted out some possible sites to host our game and found the Red Dragon Inn.  It looked good and so we tried it out.  That game, sadly, fizzled, but I had found a new home.  That Play-by-mail game is the reason I have the "D2" tacked on to the end of my name here at the inn - the name Nomad was apparently already taken.  Hammer is the only other member of that gaming group that joined other games here at the inn.

I will have to look up when I first started here at the inn, but it has now been a long time and I have been in many different games.  I hate it when they die, but I have enjoyed all of them while they lasted!

Upon further review it looks like I first came to this site in 2008.  Yep, I found a new home.

@dragon_soul92

I don't know that my children or ex-wife would agree with you. I'm sure my ex-wife would have preferred I be into fishing. My True Wife is indifferent to the gaming (despite a little teasing). Giddy and my second eldest still game. The others don't have the attention span it would seem and I rarely do any tabletop nowadays. Occasionally, when Giddy's schedule clears up, we will Roll20 a game for a few hours using my own system called realityBITES but that is a rare thing indeed with the participants scattered across the country, other interests, and work schedules.
