D&D 4.0 Discussion

This is for discussing the upcoming release of D&D 4.0. I know you all have some things to say .. so feel free to vent. I would suggest people not smite folks for saying their piece on this one .. but applauds are cool

So .. what do you think . .what have you heard .. are you going to use it .. do you think they have lost their mind? You think they are doing a good thing .. Lets talk!

I wouldn't mind hearing more

To those who are more in the loop than I am, I wouldn't hearing some more about 4th ed.

sites and a rant

Since Devalero's question in the Trivia game, I started looking up stuff about dnd edition 4. Apparently there are two sites with the most info (save for wizards.com, which I didn't go to).

These sites are:
enworld.com dnd4.com
they both list pretty much the same thing, and what I understand is that nothing is like it used to be. This is a second revision of 3rd edition views, after they already 'perfected' it in 3.5.

-Yes, I think there was no need to do this.
-Yes, I believe they are doing it for the money.

-And yes, I will download the books to take a look at them, but I don't think I'll ever use them. They've assigned natural habitats for each race! humans are from the plains, halflings from the swamps (swamps?), just to equal out the fact that dwarves are from the earth and elves from the woods.
Well, guess again: they aren's always from those assigned areas and I don't think a rulebook should tell you where they come from.
In 3 years, new gamers will assume my halfling character comes from a swamp? Bah! But I don't think so, and you know why it won't? Because by that time d&d edition 6 will be in stores, and the halfling will be originated from the tree roots in Burkina Faso.

Yes...

I pretty much agree with everything Almerin just said. I haven't looked at the sites, but I still don't like any of it. Such a big upgrade so soon after the last one is like thinking we are all fools. To think that we would spend our hard earned money on hundred v3.5 books just so that we could put them down into a box without using them when 4th edition gets published. Anyone who does that is truly a fool, and I don't consider myself a fool.

I will however look at the books. I have the habit of looking at many roleplaying books without any reason to use them. I enjoy reading stats and the background info, but I often do it only for inspiration. There may be a thing or two in the 4th edition that I'd like to try out, but I'll be damned if I will throw my books into the back of my closet because of a new edition.

Not sure here

Yeah .. i just got all my stuff for 3.5 and am still collecting .. I would like to see 4.0 come out so at least maybe the 3.5 stuff will go on bigtime sale but otherwise I'll have to see what I think after it comes out. It looks like they are re-vamping everything so it will be a totally different game. I'm sure there are some good things to come from it though. I hear they are trying to make it faster paced and to appeal to the "younger" crowd who likes everything fast food style

bleh

I don't like things fast food style, or at least not in a RPG. Roleplay isn't all about the action, and that I think is a big problem when everybody think it is. I prefer more serious play and I don't think it will be very enjoyable in a more fast paced editions of previously good games.

Not too thrilled either, but...

I've already posted something before about the fact that I'm not thrilled at the prospect of a 4th ed. so soon. But then again I wasn't too thrilled when 3rd ed came out either. So I'm content to wait and see what emerges.

I do have to say though that 'swamp halflings' sound ridiculous. Any bets that Wizard will soon incorporate 'garden gnomes'?

I've gotten used to dealin with 3e and the dreaded 3.5 but I still miss 2e.

I don't think I will play 4.

2nd Edition

If it said Advanced Dungeon & Dragons then it was almost certainly 2nd Edition as that was the first Edition to have Advanced in the title.

1st Edition was known as Basic Dungeon & Dragons or just Dungeon & Dragons while Third Edition as far as I remember did not use the Advanced either.

As for 3.5 I as a DM HATE that system and only play in one game here run in that format. And that only because I do not need to know the rules to role play online so I have never looked at a book in that line so I would not know anything on that.

ahhh

you're doing fine in 3.5, Tann. But yes, an online or table-top game differ greatly.

What most repulses me from 4.0 is that the whole 'feel' to it is so different and unlike the idea that I have of fantasy. This would probably be great in a Planescape setting or some specific campaign, but not as a standard work for your average dnd-game.

I like that 'fast food style' saying. You get an applaud for that!

I could have burst into tears when I heard that 4.0 was coming.

I started on 3.5 so I guess I'm biassed, but I like it. Then maybe that's just 'cause I haven't really had any experience of previous editions.

I'm mostly posting to comment on Grugg's statement: I never really liked the Gnomes as a base race (again, I was biased), I learned of Gnomes as they related to Syplhs, Undines (Undini?), and Salamanders, as elemental-ish creatures. That being said, The Half-Orc? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

On another note, I cannot help but wonder what they think they'll throw in there to replace 'em.

If people start mass-purchasing 4.0E, they'll break off a small chunk of my faith in humanity, which has been taking some pain recently.

Yep shame about the gnomes...

Well I think everyone agrees that the default campaign world that the core 4th ed books are referencing is odd.

But let's also remember that this information can all be ignored by anyone running/playing a campaign using 4th ed. rules (since they are bound to be supplementary books containing info. on absent races). What matters far more is how the 4th ed game mechanics actually work.

Meh, I was wrong

Looking back on what I wrote a while ago, I'm astounded at how wrong I was.

I love FR and after reading what's being done to that setting just so it fits with 'core' 4th ed material, makes me sick. (mass-purging of gods, npcs, and whole regions of Faerun)

I used to think that 4th ed. was all about Hasbro trying to fleece the consumer for more cash. What I've concluded now, however, is that they're trying to compete with MMORPGs and have concluded that the only way of doing so is by simplifying everything. It really is disheartening.

agreed

I am trying to not be anti-4e, I really am. I worry that I am becoming more and more irrelevant as a gamer, since I never even really fell in line with d20.

But man, the more I see about 4e, the less I like it.
