Subject: apologies

Tiamat, Deucalion, gboy, Nimu, Arwen, Savrit: I'm very sorry that this all carried on like it did.

Savrit especially, I looked forward to our characters' possible interactions.

Subject: wow. what?

I never said that Tenacity didn't trust Ardulace, and the fact that Lacey cleared her throat so pointedly before mention of truth serums and her beliefs that her honesty had been slighted led her to believe there was a lot going on.

You're making mountains out of molehills.

What there is in any of those passages to convince Tenacity that Chiron does not trust Ardulace is a mystery to me. One might easily conclude that Ardulace is not a local, nor familiar with local customs, but beyond that I don't see anything that would justify the kind of ideas that Tenacity has conceived about Ardulace.

That's all. I just don't think that Tenacity has any reason to have recognized Chiron's distrust of Ardulace, no reason to distrust her herself (or any reason to trust her thus far). Ardulace's attitude toward Chiron, though, has been displayed. It seems that Tenacity is drawing conclusions from OOC knowledge that you have gained from reading the game thread (such as the truth serum, and the conflict between Chiron and Ardulace), that she simply could not possess.

His choices of words were very deliberate. He was wary about what he said and/or what she heard. Tenacity isn't sure why that would be, but isn't making any decisions based on that observation. It could be because he's afraid of setting off a landmine, it could be because he doesn't want her to hear certain things. Those aren't the actions of people who are at ease and trusting of one another.

Disregarding any actual body language that would have been covered by the cover-statement, Ardulace's behavior in barging into the house as if she lived there and then offering hospitality when she was not the hostess are things that seem very odd to Tenacity. "Pardon me" would have been fine if it were accompanied by an explanation to the effect of "He told us to just come on in when it was time for this meeting" or whatever, but the limited words that were used didn't give that impression at all. Ardulace is acting rather strange around at least one person who is, ostensibly, a group-mate. Unless Tenacity can only observe what she says/does towards her and not how she treats others.

It seems like you're trying to defend against Tenacity's "finding you out," which is not something I'm thinking about at all.

I didn't actually say anything in-game about Lacey's wariness, my opinions are based on what people are saying.

Chiron said ogres, undead, and a dragon were associated with the house and that the ogres were confirmed. The undead, if I'm not mistaken, were reported by the children and the party never saw any of that. Chiron never said who reported the undead or the dragon.

Ardulace believes that aspersions were cast and Tenacity never heard anything like that.

Edit: Incidentally, the Q&A thread is kind of for discussion about what characters might be thinking and for asking questions and clarifying.

"Until then, unless otherwise stated, Ardulace will accompany the group wherever it decides to go, agree with Seluumiel, be suspicious of Chiron and be wary of Tenacity." seemed to cover Ardulace's comportment during the conversation in the library, to me. I'm sorry if I was mistaken, but I didn't act on that.

I'll edit the in-game posts if appropriate. Just need you to tell me where the flubs are.

Based on what people are saying and how they say it. He kept pausing as he searched for words when talking about her; four times, during one of which he looked back at her. She can tell that he's unsure about Lacey for some reason. I think there's a lot going unspoken in between them that Tenacity is sure to notice.

"...if he is not too busy casting aspersions upon my honesty to complete strangers."

Honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness are all tied into the same facet of a person for her. No one would slight the honesty of a person they trusted, and why would anyone need truth serums (the acquisition of which mattered to Lacey, somehow)? I don't think Tenacity has ever had anyone but criminals be wary of her (that old "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" rhetoric). There's definitely something weird that she doesn't want to step into and she has questions, but no intent to act on them yet.

Subject: Tenacity throws her helmet into the ring.

After hearing Chiron's description of the events and observing how these people behaved around one another, it became clear to Tenacity that they had been thrust together by fate and not choice. Sorting out relationships would take a lot of time if she didn't simply ask, but there wasn't time for that.

The group made its way into the library that Bailash had indicated and Tenacity took a seat near the door. The story of the cult entanglements fascinated her, and the learned blue elf had studied much of it very recently. It weighed heavily on the proceedings, the importance of what they were dealing with. Even when snippy comments were made, or when Camille was overcome with road-weariness, Tenacity was intent on the governor.

Clearly, Chiron felt ill-at-ease about Ardulace. He chose his words so carefully when speaking about her and she was certainly very odd. Perhaps they were ex-lovers? Whatever their history, Tenacity neither knew nor cared at the moment. Castor believed the cults long-gone, but Seluumiel thought there was a resurgence.

Having waited until the end of the conversation, she said, "I'm not sure what to believe right now about the cults, but it seems that this house is at the center of something much larger. I'd like a chance to see it for myself, if that's an option. I'm not sure under what terms exactly you have employed everyone here, but I want to help."

She hoped that she would be able to correctly gauge their responses.

before I post and catch Tenacity up on everything, I'm a little confused as to why Camille is tired. At this point, it's been four hours at most since breaking camp for them.

I also don't know how Ardulace knows that Chiron was casting aspersions on her honesty, if she and Seluumiel and Satya weren't part of the horse-cluster on the walk up the street. If there was another time that he said something to Tenacity --about and within earshot of--Lacey, I must have missed it.

I was just going to include incidental descriptions of fine wood or smooth stone or rich leather. I wasn't sure about what appointments or decor would actually be there and if it was lit with sconces or a chandelier, etc. Even the difference between an austere entryway and a lavishly decorated one would elicit a different response.

I wanted to be able to write about Tenacity's reaction to something other than the very straightforward behavior of the elves, is all. If you don't think I should worry about it, I won't.

I feared the worst while the site was gone, too. Glad that everything's up and running again.

Tiamat, I was going to describe the foyer of the mansion/house, but was unsure of stories/stairs/doors and other appointments. I remember the meeting room's description, but can't recall anything else for establishing the setting more strongly.

As Tenacity waited for her rap at the door to be answered, the slenderest of Xavier's companions, a half elf, simply walked in. The governor hadn't mentioned a wife, since it wasn't prudent, but she behaved as if she lived here. Was she so familiar with the house because she was a consort?
"Also, I believe the Governor may be expecting these two ladies as well... though in truth I am uncertain in what capacity they have come."

As the servant turned to announce their arrival to the governor, Ardulace stayed him with a light touch on his arm, and turned again to Tenacity and Camille. "Hast thou yet broken thy fast?" she asked.
One of the first things she said made it clear she wasn't privy to her employer's business, but the offer of breakfast confused things. How off-putting.

"Camille ate simple trail rations when we broke camp this morning, but I believe heartier fare would not be unwelcome. I require nothing for myself," she said as she connected with the servant's gaze, received a nod, and stepped into the foyer.

Tenacity sighed when the pale man added, "Kidding, of course. But seriously, I'm more than I look like." He didn't look like much, so that wouldn't be hard. Still, brash behavior like that would get more people killed than just himself. She shook her head. She had to stop thinking like that now that they were on a city street, far from the chaos and danger that prevailed a mere three days' travel away. He could invite however much trouble he wanted once Governor Castor had seen Camille delivered.

Her thoughts were interrupted by one of his companions who had trotted up to her side.
"So you, too, have business with the governor?" Chiron asked of the Percheron's rider, quickening his pace to keep up with the large horse. "Were you also summoned to deal with the disturbances outside of town?"
"Yes, we do. I was tasked with seeing to the safe travel of Camille here to his house. That is very nearly done," she said. Her ears perked up at a certain word coming from two directions. "Disturbances? What sort?"

Turning her head the other way, "When did you hear of orcs, Camille? And why didn't you say something sooner?

Xavier, is it? A ghost house? Helm preserve us, let's get all the details from Bailash himself now that we've arrived."

Upset at the omission of potentially important cautions and mind racing with those new bits of information, she dismounted near the front door of the lavish house and handed Diligence's reins to the stablehand who had approached. "Take good care of her. I have a feeling we'll be a while," she said.

The knight raised her face toward the sky briefly, summoning the courage to find out what Castor hadn't said. A ghost house? Orcs? Deaths? Maybe it wasn't need-to-know, but it sure seemed relevant to the mission. This was just the start to something much larger and she wouldn't get that time to relax. She would do everything in her power to help, if the truth were as dire as the rumors.

Calmer and more collected, Tenacity strode to the door and knocked.

Tenacity's sword made it halfway out of its sheath as the man tumbled around her and leapt at Camille. Sensing no alarm from Camille, she stayed her hand and listened closely.

Xavier leapt up on to the horse with his sister on it. Wrapping her in a loving embrace, he said "Camille... it's so good to see you again. I was worried. Oh Camille... I'm so glad you're alive!"

"This must have been the surprise he had in store," she said to herself. Far be it from her to interfere with a family reunion, even if his raw energy had nearly earned him a reflexive artery-perforation.

Xavier then turned to face the other rider. "Miss, thank you for returning my sister to me. I believe I must travel to the governor's manse to tell him that I am thankful... oh well. Thank you very much again."

"It was my... pleasure. Just be clear: I am not returning her to you but delivering her to governor Castor himself. We would be happy to accompany you the rest of the way, however. I'm sure you both have much catching-up to do," this last was directed at Camille as she caught her eye. Camille's pleasure at having something familiar again after so long was all too evident.

"Do be more careful around those with armed escort in the future," Tenacity said with a smirk and an arched eyebrow. She gestured the von Richters forward and urged Diligence to follow closely. "Those others are friends of yours, aye?"

I sort of pictured the same thing, Chiron. The party is on one side of a large crossroads as Tenacity and Camille are at the other corner, both groups are turning down the same road toward the governor's.

This position has the benefit of setting everyone in a spot, right before turning, of looking right across the street at the other group. I didn't want to take too many liberties with positioning people and therefore wasn't too specific in my post, but am also trying to be gentle with making things up about the layout of the city itself.

I liked gboy's initial response to Camille, though, and wanted a place for it to happen. I think we would have just ended up at the governor's at slightly different times, otherwise.

when you said "who seemed now to be moving to intercept them," I just wanted to clarify that Tenacity simply stopped where she was and prepared to wheel her horse across Xavier's path, should he make a beeline for his sister, all of which is unknown to her, of course. She hasn't actually moved yet.

I brought things closer and gboy's previous post should fit in perfectly there. Perhaps there is more opportunity for everyone to actually talk about what happens now, too.

If you want to slide those bits down to make sense chronologically, that would be spectacular! (please!)

"O' course. He told us to expect ya. If ya follow the main road and take a right up the hill, ya can't miss it," the guard said. Dwarfed as he was by Tenacity's horse, he maintained his composure well.

Once safely inside the town's walls and following the directions given them, Tenacity took the time to look around this new place. Being a knight-errant certainly had its perks, when travel sent one far and wide like this. Her quiet musings amid the bustle were interrupted by Camille's silvery voice:

"I can take this off now, yes? It's odd feeling cooped up when outdoors," Camille said as she pulled her hood back and let her brilliant hair cascade behind her as they rounded the corner.

"Certainly, Camille. My responsibility to conceal you applied only to the voyage itself. My last duty is but at that stylishly appointed house, there," she said, indicating what must have been the home of Bailash Castor. She spotted a motley group of four who appeared to have the same destination in mind and stood well out from the peasants and other shoppers who were milling about on their way to market. Aprons, baskets, and handcarts with kegs were the accouterments of the crowd, running errands for the day's cooking and whatever else might be on their lists. These four, on the other hand, actually carried weapons and wore no military uniform Tenacity recognized. She became tense when the unmistakable look of recognition lighted upon the palest one's face as he looked just past Tenacity's shoulder.

"Hold a moment, lady," she muttered, preparing to draw Diligence across the path of any charge. Trampling someone here would be bad, but far better than failing to protect the von Richter girl so close to the goal. "I want to know what this man thinks he is doing."

gboy made an edit so that his hasty departure from the Nightshade and subsequent encounter with Camille and me didn't actually happen/hasn't happened yet.

I see things got rewound just a bit.

Camille is hooded as a means to disguise any distinguishing characteristics from whatever pursuers or dangers might be looking for her.

I imagined that the city gates and the Nightshade wouldn't be very close, but I do like the chance encounter due to overhearing the exchange.

The sun shone brightly as two women, one on a huge, dapple-grey Percheron and the other following on a smaller pinto, approached the gates of Leaphaven. The sound of the birds in the woods was slowly giving way to the noise of the busy marketplace beyond. The leader scanned the city's wall from end to end, squinting her green eyes slightly against the bright sky.

"We are almost there, my lady. Soon we will be much safer inside a city's walls. Remember that Castor said he would have a surprise awaiting your arrival," the armored one said to the hooded-and-robed figure in tow.

Tenacity Valence was a knight, and her device was blazoned on every visible possession, even the barrette that fastened her sun-bleached, strawberry-blonde hair in its perfect braid. Any observer with an adequate knowledge of heraldry would be able to place her as Cormyrian minor nobility.

The past three days had been spent worrying about attempts on the life of her companion, a refugee from the wars in Unther. Tenacity had made several valiant tries at conversation on the first day, but Camille von Richter seemed preoccupied. Since then, it had been contained to the necessities of camp and travel.

She would be glad when this commission was complete. Such somber proceedings grew tiresome after even a few days, and she couldn't tell why this one woman had been singled out. Time for reflection later, of course, and a proper bath. Tenacity forced herself to refocus as they approached a comfortable speaking range with the gatekeepers.

"Greetings!" she called to the guards. "My name is Tenacity and I have business with the governor. With me is my charge, Camille von Richter. Pray direct us to my lord Castor's manor."

Kaylena was a little surprised to see the guard draw up short next to her. She wasn't sure if it could see her through her concealment or if it merely sensed her presence, so she plotted a retreat that would obfuscate her whereabouts once more, if it wasn't truly capable of seeing her.

She strode quickly back through the cell to the storage room, hastily unleashed a carpet of shadowy tendrils in the hallway that would catch and entangle any pursuer's feet. The shade hissed to David, "There's another one in this hallway. It's not safe now."

I'm just guessing to fill in the blacked-out part of the map, but I assume the N-S hallway that Germyn and I have entered connects to the E-W hallway that David's and the tribal's cells faced. If I disengage, can I run in the direction of what should be the tribal's cell door?

Since the guard doesn't have eyes, I can't tell for sure if it's seeing me or just sensing me, so I'll try to stay as quiet as possible while doing so. If it's not reasonable to assume I could make it all the way to that door in one turn, since from Kaylena's point of view this is just speculation, I'll figure something else out
