Hey, Meph, I was wondering how you pronounce Germyn's name. Is it with a soft 'G' or a hard one? So similar to German like the chocolate cake or like actor Greg Germann?

The casting, writing, acting, and effects were all incredible. Characters were properly realized and I bought everything, too. Well, I rolled my eyes a *tiny* bit when they had to squeeze in some classic lines from the show, but I was cheering on the inside at the same time.

My biggest issue is the shaky camera and the rapid zoom. Used sparingly, these devices can have great impact. Slathered liberally like A-1, they only serve to disguise the real flavor of a delicious movie.

This article lays it out really well, I think.

Jennifer Morrison as Kirk's mom was a treat, too.

I see how you might have misconstrued what I was talking about. I meant the cell directly east, which would be one square north of Germyn's position on the Blue starting map.

The OOC bit on my last post should read "...Move Silently straight E (and one square S)..."

That's what I figured, about learning the hard way, so I've gone to discover what happens when I step into the one cell I could see on the map whose door was open. Yay, learning time!

Subject: Kaylena

Quote:
Looking to his new-found allies, Germyn spoke. "Do we help him?

Kaylena ducked back around the corner after getting a look into the captive's cell, so as to conceal her seemingly-disembodied voice and whereabouts from the tribal.

Quote:
"Let me out," he pleas, "and I will get you an alliance with my tribe. Many of us were imprisoned here, and if we are released we can help you escape."

"If his release is easy, I can see no reason not to add another ally of circumstance. The cell next to yours, Germyn, looks like the only one whose door hangs ajar. If we make it to the hallway, we can learn more..." her voice trailed away as she scooped up her little winged companion and refreshed her cloaking magic, making sure that it applied to Sarcy as well.

Quote:
The three shafts of death hurtled toward the guard.

"Taste my fury."

Aghast at the brazen manner of confrontation on display, Kaylena thought better of the cautious approach to scouting through that open door. Getting to the hallway and finding a better hiding place seemed a much more attractive prospect. As quickly and quietly as possible, she tucked Sarcy to her body and moved for the exit.

{{OOC: recasting invisibility and applying it to Sarcy as well. Move Silently straight E toward the open door that was on the map. If the hallway is also brightly lit, she'd stop to Control Light again, but no time for that, it's panic-and-run time!}}

Subject: quick recap

So I should be invisible and caught up to where I had Sarcy scout.

Do the cell doors open easily from the outside, or do they normally have locks? And whatever enchantment hampers magic inside the cells, can I tell if it's been broken in the cells whose walls are down? That is to say, if I walk through the cell that appears to be our exit to the hallways on the north side, will invisibility fade on my way through?

Actually, I should probably find out the hard way, just trying to find out what Kaylena knows.

Edit: I'm dumb. That cell to the north, its door is shut, too.

Subject: past experience

I've seen something similar happen to this before, so I understand Chiron's position. Some friends had a game going and allowed me to join with a character I had (cleric of Bahamut--all evil must be destroyed, etc.) and I didn't take into account how that might mix with a certain character already in the party.

Now, the party was mostly of a CN/CG bent, I think, except for the NE cleric of Nerull/specialist wizard (necromancy). I don't think anything would have happened if it had just been about their personalities and combat, but he raised a *lot* of skeletons. The others had spent a lot more time around him starting from when he was only on a disturbing track and not a full-blown desecrator of the dead, so they had dealt with and justified what should have been a serious moral conflict a long time ago.

Lovisa, my cleric, was indignant and in a righteous fury when she realized what was going on. With lots of "Why won't the rest of you do anything? Are you blind?" and such, but unwilling to just start attacking, she sought communion with the dragon god (a perfect opportunity for the DM to fix things up at least for a while). Bahamut as played by the DM told her that sometimes it is necessary to use one evil to fight another. That would have been fine if it had been a different god, maybe, but Bahamut is one that won't suffer evil in any form, right? It broke her brain and she believed that her link to her deity was being interfered with.

That said, it brought a lot of great tension and roleplay into the game. Chiron is in a similar situation (with the party-cohesion advantage of there not actually being evil in Ardulace) and is coping with some severe cognitive dissonance, I'm sure. In a world where racism of this sort is actually true (99% of drow are murderous, conniving slave-drivers, and the rumors that spread about them are worse in the way rumors get), it means that barrier of preconception is even harder to break down. It's unfortunate that Faerun isn't a more enlightened place in this regard.

No one here has green skin, right? Tenacity will be fine with everything, but will probably ask some *really* stupid questions. I apologize in advance.

in all honesty, Tenacity's encounters with evil are of the goblinoid variety, with only a theoretical scope beyond that. She's fairly naïve about certain things, so you could probably manage to bluff her about parts of your affliction. Chiron will be more difficult if he ever finds out, I'm sure, judging from how no one is actually trying to justify anything to him yet about Lacey.

Now let's just hope your sister didn't do anything silly while I was escorting her.

Quote:
His voice returning somewhat, Germyn continued. "I was a ranger... killed some cult of Nerull... I was sent here... Cursed to live for centuries... I've lost track of time..." Hesitantly, he sheathed his sword. Holding it at one side for several seconds, he stared uncomfortably at the woman before him.

"I hope you can see well enough in the dark," Kaylena said as she focused on making the shadow in which she stood spread out enough to dampen the existing lights. But not that well, she thought, when she became invisible right after.

"Do not worry yourselves, I'm here but unseen," she said. Quietly moving in David's direction, she heard a voice, a man, begging.

"Please let me out, I don't want to stay here, either," he said, repeating and varying his plea in desperation.

Thinking that this could perhaps be another ally, she moved to get a closer look. Kaylena hadn't had a choice about the other two in this situation, but that wasn't any reason to throw caution to the wind now. Not that there was any wind in this place. She tried to remember how different the air felt in the cell compared to this so-called "freedom." She peered around the corner of the storeroom's now-broken wall into the cells beyond, careful not to step foot within the bounds of the cell itself. It was impossible to tell if the way they affected magic had been disturbed by the wall's collapse.

{{OOC: Control Light, dimming by 30%. Invisibility. Moving Silently to the north wall)

I have darkvision normally from being a shadowcaster, it just gets a lot better when I'm in shadow. I'd say just leave it set to normal vision most of the time so that we all know what the situation is, but I'm not sure how often the alternate visions will impact things map-wise.

Quote:
"My name... is Germyn... I have been prisoner..."

"I forgot myself in that wretched hole," the dark woman said, rubbing at the stubble on her scalp and keeping Sarcy in the periphery of her vision as he crept around the room. "It's coming back to me now, but slowly. My name is Kaylena and I wish to be out in the world again as much as you."

She eyed the two men up and down, assessing the threat and intent. It would be difficult to trust them, she decided, but mutual goals had often brought peculiar partnerships. She just had to be sure to keep enough distance to escape if they turned. That had always been the way of things: leaving, escaping, running away. It was curious that she would have to confront things now in order to flee the prison itself.

"We can probably help each other, but where do we begin? Who are you, for that matter?" Kaylena returned as she adjusted what remained of her dress. She started to pace the room, counter-clockwise, examining the walls for entrances to other cells and their occupants, hoping to find a sliver of relief from so much light. Sarcy would watch her back in case the weapon-carriers tried anything funny.

((OOC: If she does get lucky and find shadow, she will occupy it and attempt to dim the lights. Otherwise just searching.)

I was mostly guessing, based on the description, that the edges of the room would be shadowy (candles produce no bright illumination, didn't see torch markers). Upon closer inspection, I can see the shadows that the map illustrator creates, so:

There is probably not room to duck behind that crate to my left, so I'll be looking around for any shadows nearby. If there aren't any that I can see (that aren't on the other side of one of these strangers), I'll actually engage them in *gasp* conversation.

Sarcy has Hide in Plain Sight, Kaylena doesn't, so he'll at least be able to disappear. I'll edit for clarity to take that into account and ask more here before making an arse out of myself.

After accounting for her retrieved possessions, Kaylena realized she was not alone. She cast about for shadows, whose welcoming embrace she had not known for she couldn't remember how many years in the ghastly continuous light of that cell, and peered at the others.

"Get a closer look at what else has been freshly liberated, I'll watch from here," she said to Sarcy in their shared language, before pushing him toward the other side of the room.

"Show me your faces and let me know what other dangers were locked up," she said to herself under her breath. She held as still as possible to observe any other inmates and held out her open hands to show that she was not a threat.

((OOC: hide/move silently for the winged scout))

Orson Welles voiced Unicron in Transformers, where Susan Blu voiced Arcee (this is fun because I heart Transformers and my hunter's spider pet in WoW is named Arcee )
Susan Blu did additional voices in Cars where Tony Shalhoub voiced Luigi
Tony Shalhoub stars as Adrian Monk, where a character played by Nestor Carbonell was the murderer in season 2
Nestor Carbonell played a concerned parent in an episode of House, M.D., alongside Jennifer Morrison
Jennifer Morrison was in Stir of Echoes with Kevin Bacon

I'll try again and restrict myself to films, since television spots are making it too easy:

Orson Welles starred as MacBeth in 1948, where Malcolm was played by Roddy McDowall
Roddy McDowall was in The Big Picture with Kevin Bacon.

How easy/difficult will Leelee Sobieski be, I wonder?

What size do you want the character illustration to be? Just the face, or whole-body?

Finding pre-existing art with the right skin tone/eyes is almost impossible, but I did make a decent approximation with the ugo.com hero generator that I can crop/resize for you.

Subject: the metamagic feat thing

I'd have to argue in favor of applying the 3/day rule to metashadow as well, just from comparisons at the utility of meta feats in general before application of the rule to either set.
Metashadow would start to look pretty dinky if the rule were applied unevenly, I think.

Don't mind me. I'm still building a flying shadow cat.

Topic: Dungeon of the Unhallow Q&A
Subject: a question

about the uses/day sudden metamagic house rule. Some of my metashadow feats change cast time the way metamagic feats affect bard/sorcerer spontaneous casting, but not all.

A metashadow feat is already 1/day and doesn't affect the mystery's level (so 0 in the calculation).

Would the house rule bump metashadow applications to 3/day, or will we stick with the Tome of Magic rules on p 136?
There's a sidebar in that section detailing differences, I'll quote it here directly:

"Just as other casters enhance their spells through metamagic, so mystery users can manipulate their castings with metashadow feats. While metamagic feats increase the casting time of a spell to a full round when applied to spontaneously-cast spells, this is not always the case with metashadow feats. Metashadow feats function identically to metamagic feats in all ways not specifically contradicted herein."

If there's anything else that needs page numbers, etc., let me know and I'll get it posted. Those citations help me a lot, too, but I do skim things sometimes and miss stuff because of it.

Effective modifiers for trained class skills are as follows, with modifiers while in shadow in parens:

Concentration +11 (+12)
Hide +19
Knowledge (arcane) +12
Knowledge (the planes) +12
Move Silently +19
Spellcraft +11
Spot +12 (+16)

Languages: Common, Draconic, Dwarven, Elven.
The pearl of speech should be (orcish).

If I missed anything else, let me know!

Edit: feat citations:

Insightful (CArc 80) detect magic, detect secret doors, read magic each 1/day (spell-like)
Reach Mystery (ToM 137) 1/day, touch-range becomes 30' ray
Extend Mystery (ToM 136) 1/day, double duration of any mystery. full-round
Shadow Familiar (ToM 138 ) can obtain a familiar; familiar gains dark template
Improved Familiar (DMG 200, Forgotten Realms Player's Guide 39) allows acquisition of tressym, familiar's type doesn't change, familiar can't communicate with own species in the way normal familiars (PHB 59) do.
