Does it say:

BOOTGMR? (Master Record)

pr

BOOTMGR? (Manager)

Ii really makes no difference. If either one is corrupted enought to warrant the warning that it is compressed, you can consider the data lost.

Unless you can afford a data recovery specialist -- VERY expensive ...

Even then, it's entirely possible that the data may be irretrievable because the drive has (physically) failed and become unusable ...

Sorry for the bad news, but such is the way of computers.

In my experience, if the Boo Track is contaminated or corrupted, it's time to wipe the drive and reload all programs from square one.

The likely cause is a virus or trojan, but i can't and won't say for sure.

The "Boot Track" (or Master Boot Record) contains all the data for the hard drive "structure": Size, number of blocks, sectors, and segments, file locations and names, fragmentation, etc. f it is lost or corrupted and you cannot restore the entire disk from a backup, the data is lost.

But that is just my opinion ...

Topic: Core Rules Conundrum
Subject: Ah !!

I was introduced to D&D using 2e rules, then supplemrts, then RP aids. From themre, my mentors took me backward and showed me the 1e (AD&D) and the boxed-set versions. Thereafter, I picked up 3e and 3e5 on my own.

But, like you, I also prefer 2e AD&D. But even so, I still like to run a core-rules, no-frills, no-supplements/kits/options game. Just the basic rules. Clean, neat, and simple.

Like me, most of my Table-Top group likes that sort of change, because I do it regularly but infrequently. But I have found (and met) many who poo-poo and roll their eyes up at the mere mention of a "basic", coire rules game, as if it is beneath them to participate in such a "beginner's format" ...

Some game tweaks, for me, are, like:
8 hrs Sleep = Loss of memorized or granted spells
8 hrs Sleep = Ability to learn or pray for new spells
8 hrs Sleep = 2 hp heales
8 hrs REST = 1 hp heales

Cpnstitution checks for swimming, holding breah, running, resurrection, modifer(s) for endurance, etc/
Called shots (specific) are at -2,
Called shots (general area) are at -1
Speciics like decapitation, severance of an arm or leg, require a full round of concentration prior to striking, much like the assassin's death blow ... because of the precision, concentration, and effort needed to perform such an action. Of course STR is also a factor in this type oif action ...

The Demon of Brad-Jelly-Na

Brad of the Pit and Anne Jelly-Na Jolly had each earned their wealth and fame in vastly different ways, but each had purchased the title of Noble to go with their affluence and notoriety. They met by chance at the performance of a play and fell in love with each other.

So seldom were they seen apart that the pair began to be referred to by a single name: Brad-Jelly-Na. The two determined that they should adopt less-fortunate children and provide for them, giving them bhe benefit of their life's experiences, and so created their own private orphanage.

Who could have known that one of their adopted waifs was actually a demon in disguise. Once under the "care" of Brad-Jelly-Na, the evil being began it's reign of terro, corrupting and converting the children -- it's erstwhile "siblings" -- to it's own evil cause, despite the teachings and efforts of Brad=Jelly-Na.

Can you find the identity of the demon-in-child's-clothing? Cay you restore peace and balance to the family of Brad-Jelly-Na?

Topic: Core Rules Conundrum
Subject: True, true ... but tweaks?

In my core-rules games, I also use fatigue, eat/sleep cycles, called shots (or general area chots), encumbrance vs. movement, weapon size vs. speed, etc.

I agree that most find it boring (or ate least tediously slow). But, like myself, some find it an excellent opportunity to role-play and add "deoth" to the character in questioin. It also provides an opportunity for the characters to interact beyond the our-turn-their-turn rhetoric.

But while this works fine on table-top, I can imagine that that kind of extra detail in a text-based game would be, in fact tediously slow and detail-ridden. This would lead to long-winded descriptions that take away from the interest in the "relative speed" of the game, I think.

But I think I have found a happy medium, thanks to some excellent mentoring in my own experience in gaming. I " tweak" by leaving in play what rules I think is necessary, and allowing "assumptions" about aspects or rules that would be detrimental to player interest. Some may not like the rules/aspects of the game I leave in, but they learn to live with it because I don't focus on them as points of argument.

Subject: Core Rules Conundrum

I like D&D games as much as anyone else, and like to try new and interesting variations of character types and playing styles offered by the various supplements and RP aids available.

But sometimes I like to "revert to basics" and run games using the core ruleset (of whatever version) with no 'bells and whisles', as it were.

But it seems that the games I try to start with that premise have been met with apathy (disinterest?)

While I can understand that my timeing may be a bit off and this is not a good time to start games, I also have the thought that "cire rules only" ganes are generally viewed here as either boring or not challenging enough.

I could be wrong.

Which leads me to this survey. I don't know the most popular style and method of play here, so I ask to learn:

What are your individual view(s) on "core rules only" games, regardless of version (1e, 2e, 3e, 3e5 ... if any)?

Thank you, Almerin, for the suggestion. I also hadn't thought about using Uncle Wyrm's notes to provide an epilogue of sorts for the players in the "Inheritance" game. It'ts a wonderful idea. Since the "Start at the End" game never really got off the ground, I won't need to do the same for that one, I don't think.

I have sent PMs to the players that have created characcters for his (Wyrms's) games to let them know my intended plan(s), which is to start a new game. Possibly in a month of so.

My own period of grief has been relatively short, but nonetheless caring for it's brevity. It is my way, and my family understands me. What I had suggested was not out of the aforementioned sense of duty so much as out of a desire to remember him in a fashion that I believe he himself would have appreciated.

But I can do that by running a game using the knowledge and skills in gaming that I learned from him.

I hadn['t thought it quite like that, but I can appreciate, understand, concur, and agree with your reasoning, finding no fault in it. And it seems to be the the sentiment of the overwhelming majority of resoponses I am getting by PM also.

I will still welcome other comments on the idea, but I can imagine that your reasoning will continue to be that of the mojority. As well it should be.

haveing a small amount of free time available, and having set my mind to DM, I will look into setting up a recruit thread for a game of my own, then.

Subject: Reply the Second (Change In Circumstances)

Again and still, many thanks to all for thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes. They are not only appreciated, they are extremely heartening for myself and my uncle in this time.

As noted above, I have assumed the duty of helping to "administer his estate", as it were. With a full-time job, a part-tine job and the overseeing of the renovations to his home to sell it, and the storage or sale of some possessions, not much time has bee left to me. What is available is relegated to quality time with my wife, so I had resolved to be absent from the Inn for a time.

But the part-time job is no more. I was informed Thursday nite that I need not come into work, since they were laying me off. This will crimp the cash flow situation a bit, but will give me a few extra hours of breathing room (fee time).

My wife, bless her heart, is not a big fan of RPGaming but understands and even encourages my participation in the forum because I enjoy it so much. She says that she trusts me to limit my spending on the books, and it keeps me from straying. (?) As if I would dareto anger her. She's a 3rd-degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Anyway, to the point: as I was perusing Uncle Wyrm's computer, gathering data to archive, I described the games he had started at the Inn. To make a long story short, she suggested that I attempt to assume them and finish them. To honor him, after a fashion and in a way I think he would appreciate.

See why I love her?

I think the idea has merit, but I don't know if I am up to that task (yet). I need to read his backstories, Q&As, and PMs for his games. I'll also need to review his notes and info. Then I'll need to contact the players involved to let them know of the possibility and see if they would be likewise interested in a new DM taking over the game(s).

Uhfortunately, if -- IF -- I do this it will preclude my continuing in the games I was in (but I have been gone too long anyway). I will have to focus on the unfamiliar task of DMing in a new venue. So I apologize profusely in advence to the DMs of those games.

Any thoughts from Innmates on this idea?

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. All have been printed and will be taken to Utan on my next visit.

Bob:
Yes, my uncle Jay was Wyrmsting.

Olan:
I was raised with the teaching that family had an obligation and a duty to provide help and support to other family members in the event of any tragedy that befell them, regardless of it's severity. My mother's and aunts' lack of the obligation that they instilled in me is saddening and dissapointing, to be sure, but there is no animosity there. In their own time they will realize their "faux pas" and hopefully make amends, but that is for them to decide. I make no judgment. They are family and I still love them in spite of my disappointment.

While Uncle Mahlon (Utan) is divorcing himself from gaming for a while, I have taken up the maintenance of Wyrnsting's gaming domain and websites, for now (such as it is). He put too much effort into it's creation to just let it die and disappear.

The loss of Uncle Mahlon is hard, but there is no sadness. I am already at peace with his passing. I live with the philosophy that loss and death are but two of the "stepping stones" along the path of life. You can trip over them, fall and fail, or you can recognize them for what they are, necessary and inevitable, and move past them and on to more and better things. Remembrace is the key. Taking the love and memory of those lost with you as you move your path means you are also taking what you have learned from them, and anything learned from that love has value.

I am thankful to be able to have employment and job security in these times, and with the additional duties I have recently undertaken, I think I have "maxed out" my time usage. Harsh as it may sound, I am also thankful that my wife and I decided not to have children yet. I need feel no guilt about the lack of
quality time" my current situation would cause for them. I have time enough for my wife and a few quiet moments for myself, but that is about it for now.

I have Uncle Wyrm's computer for the nonce and, in perusing his e-mails to see what needs to be dealt with, I notice that he has quite a few PMs that need to be answered. I will find time to respond to as many of them as I can as soon as I can make the time ...

Again, thank you all.

From Utan:

My brother's passing has quite "taken the wind from my sails" in respect to gaming in general and D&D in particular. Our long-time collaboration playing and creating in D&D was a source of joy and entertainment for the both of us. He will be greatly missed.

Nephew Wade (Kilmorriagan) has volunteered to oversee the renovation and sale of my home, and the storage and/or sale of my possessions.

At this time, whether or not I will retun ot RDInn at all is uncertain, ahd even if I do, it will be some time yet. I do and will miss the good people of the Inn in any case. And I thank all of you for the enjoyment you brought to the lives of myself, my brother, and my nephew.

I apologize to all DMs of games that i am in for my sudden and lengthy absence. Uncle Jay's passing also forced mt to make a decision to help my uncle in his time of need, something his own sisnters would not do (sad to say that my own mother is one of those selfsame sisters). I am fortunate in these time to be able to hold down a full-time and a part-time job(s) to make ends meet. But with this added aid to Uncle Mahlon (Utant the Orange), I will no longer be active on RDInn for a while either.

I will pop in from time to time to read and pass on any comments this post generates to my uncle,

Once again, I apologize to all and thank all of you for the enjoyment you have provided to myself and my uncles in the past.

I want to show these simple folk that someetimes strangers can be trusted to simply do what's right. I will say no other words unles it is to plan something."

There seemed to be an edge of frustration to her words, but her facial expression, as it could be read, was one of resigned humor.

Thumpa had been softly pounding the table with one fist, looking from face to face, trying to guage her companions' feelings from what they weren't saying. She pretty much had an idea of what they would want to do, so she voiced it first.

"Typical. The ever-present mindset of the non-combatant. Those who fear and loathe the misery they know, but fear even more that which they do not know, assuming that it would have to be more unplasant than the misery they know. "

"If the choices are to stay and help a reluctant people and risk unpopulairyt or leave the people to a slow and inevitable death, I say Scab it all !! Gather up the village folk. Round them up and herd them into a barn or big building and lock them in until we're done saving them from themselves !! Anyone should be able to see that a quick death, or no death, is preferable to a slow and lingering death."

"My mentor used to say 'Nothing attempted, nothing garnered ... or something like that. I think it means you can't harvest any grain until you put the effort into sowing the seeds. "

Thumpa's face twisted into a slightly sheepish look when it seemed that some hadn't understood her intent. "Okay. The short version. I say we stay and help, whether they like it or not. Not helping is akin to letting them commit suicide by attrition and decimation." Hert face then took on a questioning look and she grinned.

"Next?"

Thumpa awoke with a start, sweating and shaking. The Dream again. Why now? The accursed vision the Dream showed her was consistently, puzzlingly interesting and fearsome at the same time. She was a sorcerer of fame and power known to nearly all. She -- and she alone -- had been called to save some faceless folk from a dreadful menace that had been killing many of their number recently, seemingly just for the joy of it. . She hunted, searched, sought, and was finally confronted by, the menace.

Kraddak Blackfoot, her mentor.

Surprise froze her for the moment her mentor/foe needed to lose a ball of eldritch energy in her direction. It Thumpa fast, hard, and painfully. Through tears of pain, fear, and confusion, her reaction was just as swift, she loosed a bolt of electricity that struck the opponent full in the chest and held him painfully immobile for it's duration. When the bolt finally ceased, Kraddak had a smouldering, gaping hole in his chest, and was looking in her direction with now-unseeing eyes. But he still stood -- for a few more seconds at least.

Just before he fell, Kraddak spoke only a few words, "The legacy is yours, now." He collapsed, and within a few seconds, the his body was reduced to a fine, grey dust that was blown by the breeze in puffs, clouds, and eddys until there was nothing left. In frustration, respect, and even some love, Thumpa screamed for her loss, that he who had given her the ability and direction to be able to help others was brought down by her own hand.

She always -- always -- awoke here, screaming aloud and miserable.

As she descended the stairway with Bumpa in hand, petting him, she was slowly able to shake off the effect of the Dream. By the time she reached the bottom and placed the toad in his pouch, The feelings of loss and pain, of curiosity and elation had nearly abated.

:Listening to the innkepper's story, Thumpa's attention was divided between his story and the "looky-lurks" outside. Usually, she alone was the one the drew the attention, fear, and trepidation of townsfolk, again because of the nature of her heritage.

But not this time. It seemed that their little band of outsiders had happened on a local problem that really md them outsiders. Didn't look good. They just get into town, and someone gets thwacked? Just too, too coincidental. Of course they would be looked at with suspicion!. But could they, would they, their little band of misfits, be able to do aught about it. Should they? Or should they be on their way, leaving the town to their troubles, whatever they were. Thumpa thought not. An unwanted solution to a problem was sometimes the only effective option. If asked, she knew what her answer would be ...

Isaac smiled sheepishly at Tessa's blush. Did she think that those flaming curls of hers would be easilyu forgotten by anyone, anye at all? And she had surely grown to be acomely woman, bubbling and talkative, but still with a shy side. Attractive, that combination. He could almost -- but no. He had fallen in love once and been ridiculed for it, laughed at for it. Not again for a while. But still, given the time and opportunity ... ah, well.

He chickled at the "moocalf" reference as applied to Martin. Martn's strangeness ws what made him the unique and likeable person he was, and only those who knew him not would judge him to be more than a bubble off plumb normal ...

The food that Tessa and another brought was tasty and filling, as good as he remembered it. The Brown had the bitter burn that he loved and missed, so he ordered another mug or three to sip on as he sat and waited for the promised meeting. They would be gone before the effervescence was, that's fur sure.

Isaac looked at Volmar sitting by the fire. Another strange one, but one without fear of battle. A bit on the somvber side, but then most Khords were the serious types.

Suana pulled out a stringed instrument that Isaac had never seen. It looked like a small, misshapen lute, but only had a few strings, and those were in pairs, close together. She strummed once then began to play. Not a rousing reel, or a ballad of derring0do that would lift the spirits of those in this room, No. What she played was a song of love and love lost, and what it could do to, and for, some. The lyrics, for some reason, broght to mind Torlianna, she who had laughed at the love he told her he felt for her.

She laughed, and such was the love Isaac felt that he could say nothing -- nothing at all -- to the tirade of abuse she heaped upon him for daring to embarrass her in front of her friends. Crushed, he moved to a nearby town and became sherrif of the region, protecting his own home and that of others. Isaac placed his face in his hands and rested his elbows on the table, trying by force of will to expunge the memory, but the song wouldn't let him.

But all songs must end. And this one did as well. But before Syana could begin another, there came a slow, heavy pounding aat the door. Isaac's first thought was,Just open the door, idiot !! . But then things got active 00 active and loud. Shianna screamed for her companion whom she had left outside. The shaking of the table caused Isaac to raise his head in time to see her bolt for the door, Neri close behind.

The pounding moved to rattle the shutters along with the door, and Vomar was yelling for his spear. Ha! Like he would ever forget his favorite weapon or it's location.

Then Isaac chastised himself yet again for his hesitation. Something was out there! Oh, for the luvva Myca! Not again! Not more of them! Oh, puh-lease,, Falloes of the Even Hand, not again! Isaac stands and pulls his sword and takes a stance just inside the door, to try and prevent "unauthorized entry" or to rush out "at need" if called by Neri or Shianna.

Subject: Thumpa:

Once Thunpa had told her story, she listened as the others unfolded epic tales of intrigue and deeds. Her agreement to allow Brother Perrin to accompany them seemed to be the common answer among them, so Thunpa felt a little more at ease for speaking up furst.

Later, Tamuril loosed his epic tale of the Kordaldrum's salvation, Thumpa listened intently, and was not only moved, but humbled and silenced by the tale. Such was the impact that she vowed there and then to attempt to do something -- if only one thing -- that would make her and her name remembered beyond her comapions. She wanted to become one of the epic, great heroes tht whose name would bring about tale after tale of exploit and wonder, whether true or not.

This thought, and hou she would go about it, would keep her silently brooding for the next few days. She spoke seldom, if at all, and sometimes didn't even respond to simple questions. She heard them, alright, but such was her focus on that newfound goal that she simply didn't deign to answer.

Ths sight of the vast exanse of water from the beach they encountered was as epic to Thumpa as Tamuril's tale. One in-drawn breath of awe and wonder at such a vast body of water, trying to imagine the kind of creatures that could, would, and did live in such an environment. She also tried to imaging living with that immense field of wetness surrounding her, as far as her eyes could see, much like what she currently saw stretching to the horizon. She shuddered. THAT was not a thought she was comfortable with. She could walk on land to get where she needed to go, even if not on a horse or wagon. She could not swim, so out there she would require a foreign form of transportation 00 or drown. No. she was fine here. And the awe ended with that realization.

The followed the group away from the beach gladly, across and around more dunes, until the path led them to a small village. They eventually found a tavern that had a few rooms to let and a few drinks to be had. Evidently their arrival was of note for this village, for not long after settling in to eat, drink, and rest, folks began to come in to the extablishment to veiw Thumpa and her companions. Still keeping silent, Thumpa was nonetheless increasingly curious that none of the locals, except the barkeep, would approack them to speak. And Thumpa certainly didn't expect anyone at all to speak to her, not with her obvious heritage. She was used to that.

The barkeep, got the attention of Brother Perrin and Ocyari with his mention of "haunting" going on locally. While Thumpa snorted and dismissed the mention as local myth intended to scare children into obedience. But Ocyari and Perrin would not let it go. The barkeep admonished Perrin's seeming disbelief, but whispered something to Ocyari when she herself "pushed" him. Curious. But that was Ocyari. Ever the curious one, and a curiosity herself for that very reason.

Still Thumpa kept silent, almost adopting a subservient attitude for the benefit of the local lookers. It might set them at ease if they thought that she was the srong-back-and-weak-mind of the group, the step-and-fetchit, the go-fer. She stayed silent even as she mounted the steps to go up and sleep -- finally. Maybe tomorrow she could bring herself out of this line of thought that was distracting her. There was noting she could do until the time came to do it, so worrying about it was non-productive, and therefore unnecessary.
