Topic: Favorite Homebrew
Subject: Servants of the Flame

My favorite homebrew class was a PrC I made called "The Servants of the Flame".

It was an arcane PrC that granted its members very potent control over the element of fire. Their control over fire was so potent that it could even effect creatures with fire resistance / immunity (though at a lesser degree).

I was able to use the PrC as an intergal part of several of my campaigns, as the power struggle in its ranks flexed and surged.

It was the first REAL PrC that I had ever made for D&D once I learned 3.5 rules.

Subject: Favorite Magic Item

Just curious to see if anyone had a favorite magic item from a character that they played?

Mine was from a 2nd edition game I played in. It was an intelligent sword named Decaphase. It was a githyanki silver sword with an attitude. It had several special abilities and such. I remember it could cast plane shift 1/week, it could speak via telepathy, it had a special purpose (destroy githzerai),unfortunately I cant remember its special purpose power (It was in 1992), but If memory serves right it was a +3 weapon.

Me and my adventuring group had to fight a pit fiend in order to retrieve the weapon. It was in one of the 7 Crypts of Cauldarius (The campaign that I spoke about in a previous post).

The only problem was that for some reason the Githyanki liked to show up at the most inopportune times to try and recover it.

But it was fun...

Topic: 2nd Edition AD&D Houserules
Subject: 2nd Edition AD&D Houserules

I was just curious what some of the 2nd edition AD&D house rules that you all used were.

My old group had a few house rules.

One was that levels beyond 10 still awarded additional hit dice instead of set hit points. I know it doesn't make for a very realistic game, but our group was small so in order to do anything semi-epic we needed all the help we could get (besides its supposed to be fantasy and heroic).

Another of our house rules concerned overcasting. We enabled spell casters to cast spells beyond their daily limit at a cost to their health. For every 2 hit points they willingly gave up they could cast 1 spell level. (I.e. a 5th level caster giving up 6 hit points could cast another 3rd level spell). The limit to this was that they could only do this a number of times per day equal to their magical defense bonus. (So the same wizard above with a 15 wisdom could only overcast 1 time per day.)

Just curious, what were some of your house rules?

Subject: Anyone care to help with a design?

(I am sorry if this is not posted in teh correct forum, but I honestly did not know where to post it up.)(It's cool, generally if you don't know where to put it, it goes in the common room. Plus I lurk around and move them. PS MOVED -- Grugg)

I have recently began to rework the homebrew setting that I have most of my games take place in.

Unfortunately what brought me to this is the fact that I moved from California to Arkansas and my handwritten notes did not make the trip.

Even more unfortunate was the fact that I had absolutely NO electronic backup for the years worth of work I lost.

But it is not necessarily a REALLY bad thing. It gives me a chance to remake and redo some things that needed to be updated.

Enough of my prattling. Here is the design I am working on:

There is a small coastal town called Deepwater. about once a month there is a strange sight in the bay. A galleon that seems to be made of bleached bone sails the surrounding waters. It never bothers anyone, but leaves a horrid stench in the area. For 1 week after the galleon sails all the fish that are retrieved from the waters are dead and rotting.

I am trying to come up with some ideas on what this galleon is, why it sails, and such.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: 4 Horsemen

I had one character who recieved a helluva curse from tampering with statue that shouldnt have been touched.

The statue was a statue of the 4 horsemen of the apocolypse. Well my character being a thief (AD&D 2nd ed), couldn't resist all of the gemstones adorning the statue. By prying them out of the statue he awakened the curse.

Everytime that he looked behind him he could see one of the 4 horsemen closing in. Each time he looked they got a little closer. As each one reached him he had to fight it in single combat (similar to the skull card in the deck of many things AD&D 2nd ed, but without the XP benefit.)

Each creature that he killed took on the semblance of the "attack" of the horsemen following him. As an example when Famine was following him and killed something, the creature he killed immediately took on the look of something that had starved to death.

Also anytime that my character killed something he could hear the horsemen whispering thanks to him. (The DM hinted that each death my character caused made the horsemen stronger, but never actually gave specifics).

You have NO idea how hard it is to go through life without EVER looking behind you.

Topic: The story of Verigrimm
Subject: The story of Verigrimm

This is just a random backstory that I made for a character concept. This was just a spur of the moment thing, so forgive me if it is not done very well.

What I was seekign to accomplish was to create a reason that a character would turn to a Lawful-Evil alignment. I think that this character background would do good as the background for a Warlock or Wizard.

Let me know what you think.

Verigrimm was the third born son to a family of merchants. His youth was spent in the training of negotiations and mercantile skills. His father was a harsh man who did not tolerate any type of failure on the part of any of his employees. He dealt with any failure in a very harsh fashion, so that it did not happen again.

As a child, Verigrimm was schooled by various tutors in many languages and traditions. It was his father’s wish that he help his eldest brother to run the merchant company when he came of age. Ever the harsh disciplinarian, Varigrimm’s father dealt out untold pain for any indiscretions in his sons studies or personal life.

Verigrimm grew to be a young man and his father sent his east to study and apprentice with his uncle, who was also a merchant. It was here that Verigrimm met his love, Estrella.

Estrella was the step-daughter of his uncle. Her mother was the woman that had replaced Varigrimm’s aunt after her untimely (and some say purposeful) death. She was a beautiful lass a few years younger than Verigrimm. Estella also held fond feelings for Verigrimm. However their love was forbidden by the rules of the house.

Estrella was already spoken for in an arranged marriage that would grant her stepfather a large portion of the upcomming lumber trade for the construction of the newest outpost and village on the borderlands. Although Estrella knew of the negotiations for her arranged marriage, she never shared these with Verigrimm. She was in denial of the inevitable.

Verigrimm and Estrella still continued their romance, away from prying eyes. They made every effort and excuse to spend as much time with one another as possible. Soon they decided that they would run away together and make their own lives. They just had to wait for the right moment.

Unfortunately that moment never came. Verigrimm’s uncle suspecting that there was a plot sent Verigrimm away on an errand. While Verigrimm was away, his uncle pushed the arranged marriage forward. Estrella had no choice in the matter. The contracts had already been signed.

Estrella’s husband was a brute of a man with violent tendencies and vile ways. He was also a worshipper of the dark powers, though that was only hinted and suggested in whispers. He took Estrella as his wife purely to taint the innocence that he seen there. He had no love for the woman.

Verigrimm retruned to his uncle’s lands and to the heartbreaking news of Estrella’s marriage. He was absolutely distraught by the news. He felt betrayed by his uncle, by Estrella, by the world in general. He vowed that he would learn the reasons for the treachery of his beloved.

Verigrimm stalked around the perimeter of the noble’s home. He watched in anger and sadness as the brief images of his beloved and her new husband briefly flitted across the open window panes. He decided that he would simply confront them. He had nothing to lose but his life, and without her his life was meaningless.

Verigrimm silently prowled his was through the gardens of the manor house and into the house proper. He slipped through the halls of the house and into the bedchambers beyond. It was here that he found the two sleeping in the bed, the man with his arms wrapped around Estrella.

This was more than he could stand. He immediately took his dagger and plunged it into the heart of the man. He drove the dagger repeatedly into the mans flesh. The man had no chance to defend himself.

Caught up in the rage he turned the dagger also on his beloved. He stabbed with all the hate and fury that he could muster. He stabbed her dead body until he literally passed out from exhaustion.

It was then and only then that he woke to find Estrella, his once loved, tied about the wrists and ankles in submission. She lay lifeless in an eternal embrace with the man that she had detested.

Thoughts dark and horrific passed through his mind. He knew that what he did was arong. He did not know what had driven him to do it. He heard horrific whispers in his mind. The whispers kept telling him that she had remained faithful. That her bindings proved that she was here against her will. That he was a cold blooded murderer.

He left the building and his life behind. He wandered near and far trying to escape the whispers. He slowly started to descend into madness. He found that he did not know truth from reality any longer. Dark whispers pervaded every part of his life, in the waking hours and during his fitful slumber.

The whisper instructed him on certain things. They spoke to him and told him that if he were to listen to them he could find a way to have his beloved back. He ignored these whispers at first, but after several days (or was it months) he started to belive what he had heard in the whispers.

That is how Verigrimm came to be who and what he is today. Forever seeking redemption for his sins, and seeking to quiet the whispers that torment him…

This one actually happened.

A man bought a brand new Winnebago travel coach and was driving down a highway. He started to get tired, so he put the mechanized beast on cruize control, got OUT of the drivers seat and went to make himself a cup of coffee. He obviously crashed and totalled out the coach.

He sued the Winnebago company because the owners guide did not say that cruise control meant you had to stay in the drivers seat. He said the phrasing was misleading. He won the lawsuit.

There were 2 boys who were an absolute holy terror for their poor single mother. She had tried everything to get the boys to behave, and nothing had worked. She decided to speak to the local preacher and see if he could do anything.

So while her eldest son was at school she took the youngest to see the preacher.

Preacher: Son, your mother has told me that you have not been acting very well. This is not pleasing to God.

The boy just sat there saying nothing. the preacher decided to show the boy that he could act good because God was in his heart.

Preacher: Son do you know where God is?

The boy still sat there saying nothing.

The preacher at this time became a little perturbed.

Preacher: I asked you son DO YOU KNOW where God is?

The boy looked a little frightened, but still said nothing. This really anger the preacher. The preacher screamed red faced at the boy hoping to elicit a response.

Preacher: DO YOU KNOW WHERE GOD IS?

at this the boy ran out of the room and straight home. He crawled in his closet and would not come out. Soon his older brother came home from school and found his little brother huddled in the closet.

Older Brother: What are you doing hiding in the closet?

Younger Brother: You better get in here too. God has come up missing and the preacher thinks we had something to do with it.

I myself like fantasy games with a decent amount of magic. Not too overpowering, I dont want every child in the street capable of casting fireballs, but at the same time I dont want to have to complete an epic quest to retrieve a silvered dagger.

I really enjoy running D&D games with an exotic feel. I loved to run horror type games. I also loved the more exotic campaign settings (Ravenloft, Planescape, Darksun) compared to the traditional (Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk). Of course being poor as I was (am) most of the stuff I do nowadays is homebrew (3.5 ruleset).

This is a throwback from my days of AD&D when non-profeciency penalties were kind of steep, and for some reason I kept losing my weapons...

But my weapon of choice always was a club.

The reason for that is because dang near anything can be used as a club. A broken chair, a branch off a tree, hell I even used my own severed arm as a club one time. Any character worth their salt could find one if need be.

And the damage wasn't horrible either.

What is your favorite weapon?

Topic: GMs - Most Memorable *Player* Characters?
Subject: Richmond Carmichael

This was a character in an online game that I ran on another site. He was an Aasimar Sorcerer. His character history had involvement with draconic forces. So he hated dragons.

Since I knew the player and knew he could take it, I sent him into various situations where he had to deal with draconic agents.

He ended up meeting the dragon in charge of these agents (who was in all actuality a God). He showed utter contempt and insolence towards this obviously superior creature. This impressed the God, so he gifted Richmond with a special Gift.

Richmond was converted into a Half Dragon.

The player played it all to a T. It was loads of fun. I still use Richmond as an NPC now.

I tend to allow my PCs fates other than death, unless they really want it. They are usually given ample choices and chances to avoid it, but then there are some that just dont know when to quit.

However as was normal for the online community I had several players join, play for a while and disappear. I NPCd their characters for a while, but after a few weeks/months decided to make examples out of their characters.

Nothing emphasizes the strength of the BBG as when he touches the (Then NPC) barbarian at the forefront of the party and the (Then NPC) barbarian's skeleton rips out of his body and starts to attack his former party.

Topic: Memorable NPCs?
Subject: Alastaire the Undecided

This was actually one of my PCs. However the DM of the game ended that campaign and would never let me play him again. So he has become an NPC in several of my own games.

Alastaire was a young man who suffered a mental breakdown after seeing his mother and father kill one another. His father was a sorcerer and his mother a warrior. This mental breakdown caused Alastaire to acquire a split personality disorder.

In game terms Alastaire was multiclassed as a Fighter/Sorcerer. He was either led by his mother or his father on any given day. This was randomly decided by dice roll.

If he was led by his mother he functioned as a Chaotic Good Warrior.

If he was led by his father he functioned as a Lawful Evil Sorcerer.

There was a third force that helped to keep the two personalities from meeting. Each day depending on the dominant personality, this third force would hide all the trappings of the other (armor, weapons, etc...) in a special bag of holding that required a command word to retrieve its contents. Neither his mother's nor his father's influences knew the command word, or about one another.

He was fun to play, but has made an even funner NPC to throw in the games.

Topic: Memorable Deaths
Subject: Memorable Deaths

One of my old groups had a player who always wanted to play either an anti-paladin or an assassin character. He was like clockwork. And of course he would ALWAYS end up turning on us at the most inopportune time.

We ended up fighting our way into a young dragons lair. after dispatching the death lizard we started to pillage and plunder its hoard. Of course several of us went into different parts of the lair to explore.

And then it happened.

The strike we all knew would come. The anti-paladin struck my character from behind. Fortunately he didnt do much damage and I was able to call for help. The rest of the party arrived and we killed the anti-paladin.

The player was really upset with the fact that his plan/plot ended up turning against him. What really made him mad was what happened afterwards.

My character found a Staff capable of casting raise dead. We all stood around casting raise dead on the anti-paladin. This brought him back to life with 1hp and decreased his con score by 1. Of course we then killed him and repeated the process until he finally failed his system shock roll.

It was a waste of a perfectly good magic item, but it was a guilty pleasure. He deserved it.

We all had a laugh over it and he was so mad that he didnt play with our group any more.

Topic: Most memorable villains of all time
Subject: Nameless Villain

The most memorable villian I can recall was from a 2nd edition campaign that I played. Luckily the villain was not really after me per se, but he was rather interested in dismembering a member of our party.

In a battle our paladin character ended up delivering the killing stroke on an evil cleric. This obviously perturbed the soon to be dead cleric. As the sword strike fell the evil cleric uttered a death curse.

Long story short the evil cleric came back as a revenant bent on destroying the paladin. now this normally wouldnt be too much of a problem, but this revenant was "enhanced". It had fire immunity. There was no way to destroy the creature except to retrieve the "Starburst" medallion from the crypt that we were venturing to.

The Revenant popped up at the most inopportune times, and nearly killed the paladin several times.

It was truly the best game that I have ever played in. Start to finish it was about 9 months long with weekly sessions of 4-8 hours. I wish that I could find my old DM, but we lost track of each other years and years ago.

Clerics always held a special place for me. Of course that also depends on the pantheons available.

I had a cleric character that worshipped the God of Greed once and demanded payment for any spell that he cast on behalf of the party, unless they were a follower of his God.

Another cleric character I had was not a cleric at all, but instead a fighter who was certifiably insane and thought he was a cleric. He would "cast" his spells and then blame the failure on the lack of faith from his other party members.

Hello everyone. I am new to the site, but not to the online community. I have been active in the online roleplaying community for the past several years.

I have played every version of D&D since the red box up to 3.5 edition. I have never played (nor want to) 4th edition. Its not that Im closed minded, but I am cheap and not willing to buy all the books over again.

I also played several other games as well: TMNT, Cyberpunk 2013 & 2020, and Freeform among others.

My passion is designing new resources. I have made several thousand new spells, items, and such for D&D games. I have had one .pdf published (along with a friend of mine).

Anyways due to my job I will be on and off. I work internationally and do not always have a reliable internet connection. I work a 28/28 rotational schedule.

Hope to see you all in the forums.
