Subject: McGuinness

Having slept well, all considered, Corban kept to himself as he readied his gear for the days journey. As was his habit he observed rather then interacted, so while the other soldiers talked he listened and drew his own conclusions on the matters at hand. His thoughts raced over the possibilities for what might lay ahead and yet he kept finding himself returning to pondering the lorries that had drawn his curiousity during his own watch the night before. Something about those vehicles didn't sit right with Corban but he couldn't put his finger on what. Other then their brief passing it had been a rather uneventful night after all, and from what Corban had overheard from the others it would seem their watches were rather similar.

Hearing the Captain issuing their marching orders Corban decided that all he could do was be extra cautious in lue of his gut reaction to the vehicles that had passed in the night. Despite his having already checked his equipment upon waking Corban soon found himself double checking the same gear once again. There was no doubt he would be on guard today, his gut having fueled his wariness, and with any luck that would be enough to keep them safe on this march.

Subject: Just saying..

I would just like to note that with the mass production of weapons during WWII the finding of production defects is far from inconcievable. Couple this with the possiblity of damage from a bullet, not to mention the fall, and while we all as players may know that Corban is lying that doesn't change that his excuse is plausible.

And with the only tracker in the group being McGuinness himself, I doubt the "lost" rifle would be found any time soon.

P.S. And if it is argued that Corban didn't have time to move off let alone field strip the weapon then it can also be argued that I didn't see any mention of Romo field stripping the carbines in order to check their internal firing mechanisms. How would he have time for that if McGuinness doesn't even have time during all the gear checking, smoking, and order issuing to go into the woods nearby and take apart a rifle. (A weapon I might add that he is a master with, as it is his weapon of choice since childhood. If anyone in the unit can take apart a rifle quickly it would have to be him.)

"Sorry Sarge, but why do you think I'd bring a broken rifle?" McGuinness responded smoothly. "As you can see the only rifle I have on me is my own."

Shrugging to himself internally, McGuinness figured he should have known Romo wasn't going to drop this foolish notion that the carbine was somehow a better weapon then his Springfield. Either he had a false idea about the weapons platforms or he was one of those micromanaging types that just had to have every minute detail his way, even if that meant endangering lives. While the mission was already proving to be more complicated then it first appeared it looked like it would only be growing more so at this rate.

[OOC: I rp'd that he moved off to strip the weapon in order to ensure that it would have a irrepairable defect, one way or the other, and that he intended to lose the rifle afterwards. I then rp'd in my last post that he only has his sniper rifle on him when he joins the march. While you could certainly try to discover where the rifle is now it is clearly not on McGuinness's person.]

Subject: Back post - Start of march

McGuinness watched the soldiers begin falling into position with his usual steely-eyed stare. While most of them seemed to possess some battlefield experience, his instincts still told him that none of them were true predators. Clearly he was the only sniper in the group, and while the others might have killed men they had not truly hunted them. Going out into no man's land to hunt other human beings fully capable of hunting you back changed a person. The displacement that most soldiers experienced when killing distant targets is not available to a sniper. Where as the soldier sees only a human shape when he pulls the trigger, the sniper looking through their scope must look the person in the face as they end that person's life. Choosing if and when the people in their scopes live or die is like playing the hand of God, and as such it can have serious ramifications on the psyche of the individuals who take this role.

McGuinness was not one of those who cracked under this pressure, but it had certainly had its effects on him none the less. It was only his firm belief in the righteousness of his cause, and his experiences as a youth hunting and trapping for food to feed his hungry siblings, that gave McGuinness the insight to accept that he did only what had to be done. Just as his father and his father's father before him had, he fought to protect not only his country but also those who couldn't protect themselves. In his mind if he had to butcher men as if they were animals in order to accomplish this then so be it, Corban would do what needed to be done. It was this determination that had led to McGuinness's calling card, that and his appreciation for the copy of Divine Comedy that he had read some years ago. Believing as he does that the Nazi's are amongst the worst of all traitors, in that they have betrayed all of mankind in launching their genocidal war, it is not hard see why he would wish to send them to the ninth and lowest level of hell as described by Dante. It was as a symbol of this intent that McGuinness began leaving a nine of spades behind in his sniper nests after successful hunts.

McGuinness halted his musings in order to move into position to support Clements, though he did so only carrying his sniper rifle. "Sure thing Sarge.. though I wouldn't call my girl here a one shot wonder, she may be a bolt action but I can empty a five round clip in a three and a half inch grouping at six hundred yards, and in less then fifteen seconds I might add. Besides, that carbine would be more useful as a paperweight or a club then as a rifle considering that it has a bent firing pin.. falling out of a plane during a firefight is as hard on gear as it is on soldiers Sarge."

Subject: What Romo doesn't know wont hurt him...

Having given the Captain his report about the mountains he'd seen to the south, as well warning him about the clearings in the forest that looked to be farms at this distance, Corban moved off only to run into Sergeant Romo as he was handing out gear. Placing the grenade and extra rations into his pack first, Corban quickly found room in his cargo pockets for the extra ammo and the clip for his pistol. As the M1 fired the same rounds as his Springfield the ammo could prove itself invaluable soon enough.. a pity all his preparation had gone to waste as he'd lost his bandoliers in the chaos on the way down.

McGuinness had only ever been this low on ammo after a protracted defense without resupply, he'd never willingly started a mission with so little in the way of vital supplies. Corban knew from experience that bullets were more valuable then food in a time like this. Going over the carbine McGuinness removed the clip and slid it into his pocket with the rest of his new ammo before slipping off to field strip the weapon. It wouldn't take much effort to remove the firing pin or damage the carbine in some other irrepairable way so that he would have a reasonable excuse for why he "lost" the carbine after they had moved out, all without the Sergeant being any the wiser.

McGuinness had been a soldier long enough to know better then to argue with his superiors, no matter how wrong he might think they were. While he would never risk lives by disobeying an order, he also saw no reason to suffer or risk his own life unnecessarily over any foolishness either. In the end there was simply no benefit in him carrying an extra carbine that he would never use. It didn't have superior range or accuracy over his rifle, it used the same valuable ammunition as his own rifle, and to top it all off it was an extra five pounds that he had no legitimate reasons to carry.

As soon as the gunfire ripped through the cabin Corbin looked to the nearest exit. He'd rather take his chances in the air then run the risk of being trapped in a doomed aircraft. Barely waiting for the order to jump Corbin made his way to the door and was amongst the first to leap into the night sky.

The relief Corban felt upon exiting the plane was short lived however, as he felt himself jerk around in the air from bullet impacts. Not feeling dead yet Corban remained calm as he fought to right himself and control his free fall so that he could pull his chute. Feeling as though he was running out of time Corban pulled the cord as soon as he was able to. The sudden jerk as the chute began to arrest his fall caused one of the bullet damaged straps to snap. The luck of the Irish appeared to be with young McGuinness however, as the rest of the bindings appeared to still be intact and up to the task of carrying him safely to the ground.

As Corban finally has the chance to scan his surroundings he finds himself only moments from impact with the tree tops he sees racing up towards him. Bracing himself, and bringing his limbs in tight, Corban broke through the upper canopy only to have his chute catch on one of the larger branches that are now above him. The sudden jarring stop was more then a little painful but going from a burning plane to four feet off the ground hanging in a tree was enough of an improvement to be worth a little pain in McGunniess's book.

Having no desire to be caught in a tree by an enemy soldier, Corban drew his Ka-Bar and cut the straps still attaching him to the tangled chute in order for him to drop free. Landing mostly on his feet McGuinness went to one knee after landing so that he could sheath his knife before going over his equipment. Salvaging what he could from his bullet riddled Musette bag Corban found himself forced to replace the bag with another from one of the fallen soldiers who had not been as lucky as him this night. It was better he take it then leave it for a Nazi in any case, and it wasn't like Doc wasn't already stripping a dead soldier for gear. Cutting some lines of parachute cord just in case they had need of rope or cordage later on, McGuinness put a bundle of lines into his own bag before cutting and tieing off bundles for any of the other soldiers who might be interested in some.

Halting his work with the parachutes upon hearing the Captain begin issuing orders, McGuinness finally unstrapped and began readying his sniper rifle. A man's rifle was his primary means of staying alive in this war and Corban went over his with a fine tooth comb before he felt confident enough in its operation that he could head out. Falling back on his hunting and tracking skills McGuinness moved out to circle their landing zone. Doing his best to search the area for sign he eventually found his way to the highest vantage point in their vicinity, a tall tree on a bit of a rise. Scouting as best as he could, Corban prepared to report to the Captain with what he'd learned so far as he made his way back to the group.

Nefarion couldn't help but laugh at Kordar's misunderstanding as he pointed it, "Zyak wux vucot svaklar Rath ui hak? Thric, si tir ti siofme wux tir.. zyak wux zklaen ti kampiun lae algbo lae wux siofme wux tir."

Walking with the natural grace only an elf possessed Nefarion made his way into town with the others so inclined. The small smile on his lips belied his naturally wary state as he scanned his surroundings nonchalantly. The skills instilled him as a young drow were ever apparent, even here on the surface. And as drow lived in a constant state of preparedness for assassination that was how Nefarion still viewed the world at large. An ambush around every corner and a knife in every hand. While it was certainly not a carefree way of life it was all he knew, and his visions recently gave him no reason to change that.

"Local aid is always either worthless or else biased. Even so, those of us still here should seek out this Sheriff Green and learn what we can." Nefarion replied to Khetarin offhandly as he scanned the town paying careful attention to each individual in sight. "Let us get the lay of the land before we make our next move.."

Seeming to ignore Khetarin's last question Nefarion let the conversation lag as he continued to scan the town carefully. The drawn out pause stretched on until Nefarion could feel Khetarin giving him a look, even without his having to look at him to see it. Allowing the small smile of inherent superiority, a look most of the lesser races found disdainful but that drow were famous for making none the less, to grace his handsome lips before Nefarion finally broke the silence and answered Khetarin's last question.

"Rath is where he needs to be. We, on the other hand, should be focusing on getting to where we need be rather then wasting time dawdling here." Nefarion said resolutely before switching to Draconic and continuing softly. "Wux ocuir shar tir ti kampiun."

Subject: The Blessings of Sehanine Moonbow

With the deceptively easy natural grace of a drow, Nefarion held his balanced pose sitting cross legged in the swaying wagon as he rested in Trance. While his subconscious mind monitored his surroundings for any signs of threats or danger, his conscious mind meditated peacefully in the closest state a drow ever came to sleep. As he let his mind drift Nefarion felt the familiar touch he had felt every time he meditated for as long as he could remember. As was always the first sign of the presence Nefarion felt the pull of the moon as it slowly rose to fill his mind's eye. Even as a child in the Underdark, never having seen the sky, he'd had visions of the moon. As a youth he had never known what the vision was of, let alone what it meant, and it wasn't until he reached the surface so many years later that he gained greater understanding. Seeing the night sky for the first time had been a momentus experience for Nefarion, though it was not nearly as satisfying an answer as he had envisioned for so many years. While finally realizing what it was he envisioned daily during Trance went a ways towards satisfying his rampant curiosity in regards to his visions, it in turn only led him to more questions in the long run.

It wasn't until he'd seen the silver pendant of a full moon topped by a crescent-shaped haze hanging in the stall of a half elven woman in a market of one of the first cities that Rath and he had visited that he got any further answers. Feeling drawn to the pendant Nefarion had purchased it, much to the woman's surprise and initial reluctance, but his being willing to buy it without even haggling on the price went a long way towards settling her apprehension. A little coaxing had even gained him a bit of an explanation, for apparently the moon is a symbol of the Daughter of the Night Sky Sehanine Moonbow, an elven goddess dedicated to opposing the drow gods. According to the woman, the goddess worked through visions and dreams, and it was because Nefarion was told this that he finally began to put more faith in what he saw during Trance. Suddenly all the little things that his meditative visions had predicted over the years began to make more sense to him. Perhaps it was more then mere chance that had led him to escape his people's dark ways and brought him to the surface.

It was this realization that had led to Nefarion's new found trust in his visions, and that in turn had led to the gifts granted him by the presence that touched his mind. After the visions had cleared from his mind Nefarion felt the moon return to the forefront once more, and as it did so he felt it impart to him the spells he would need for this day. Trusting in the foresight of the presence that Nefarion could only assume was the goddess Sehanine, Nefarion accepted the blessings as they were given and tried to piece together what he could of the myriad of images that his visions this night had entailed. The first image that became clear to him was that of a human man who seemed to fade into or pass through a wall of some kind. The next was a shadowy blur of movement and spilled blood that Nefarion confidently felt was Rath'Sharr, even though he had no clear image of him, and it seemed to him as well that not all the blood was that of his enemies.

Suddenly Nefarion lost control over the images in his mind as a powerful and crystal clear vision came crashing to the surface. His vision's start seemed normal and harmless to Nefarion at first, with a peaceful image of a full moon on a clear night, wispy clouds floating by harmlessly casting a pale shadow over the moon and stars. The peace is quickly broken though as a large bat like form flies across the moon, his shadow cast against the pale cratered orb. With its passing the moon suddenly goes red and seems to begin pouring blood like rain from its surface. As the blood rain falls slowly to the ground below it, it begins to pool around what must be more then a hundred dead bodies that lay scattered piecemeal across the field. Among the dead are several familiar faces from within the guild, rising out most starkly in Nefarion's mind is that of his travelling companion Rath'Sharr.

Feeling shaken by his last vision, and yet confident that he had learned as much as he thought he could from this meditation, Nefarion roused himself from Trance and glanced at Rath just in time to follow him as they disembark from the wagon with the rest of the party. Before he could mention his vision however Rath was already signing his intent using drow hand sign. Unable to get a sign in edge wise Nefarion could only watch as Rath smoothly turned away and drifted off into the shadows, rapidly vanishing from even Nefarion's well honed sight. Rather then worrying himself needlessly about what the future may hold and those things he cannot change Nefarion instead focused on what he could control by readying his spells in preparation for what ever lay ahead. Just to be safe and rule out an ambush Nefarion decided to mask his movements by straightening his wide brimmed hat as he surreptiously casts Detect Magic in an attempt to see what lay in the party's immediate vicinity.

I know where your coming from. My lil bro is a little over 3 years younger then me and he used to worm his into my games back in the day. While I certainly wouldn't take it easy on him I also didn't allow anyone but me to pick on him. The way I handled him was to try to keep him interested and cater to him but at the same time minimize the risks involve should he get bored or quit. I did this by making sure his character was never key to the story or the party. So long as you ensure that the rest of the party can function without him then if he does quit you can simply kill off his character. Play tested and approved by me!

P.S. Ten years later I still talk to my brother a couple times a week but I only occassionally talk to one of my friends from high school. I think I made the right call there and I wish you luck in your own decision. Good luck and best wishes bud!

Subject: Nefarion

Nefarion listened intently to Leo's little speech with his usual feigned nonchalance, the only out ward sign he made at all while hearing Leo's instructions was a raised eyebrow at his "by any means necessary" comment.

'Rath is going to love these orders,' Nefarion thought to himself. 'I hope Leo knows what he is doing.. sending drow out with such open ended orders certainly ensures that the objectives will be met however.. lets just hope the gravediggers in Oakrest are up for all the work they'll have to do once we've arrived there..'

Catching Rath'Sharr's sly smile Nefarion knew from experience that Rath was enjoying similar thoughts as himself about their current mission's parameters. This job almost felt drow in nature, hence Nefarion couldn't help but think that it must be something like a taste of home for Rath'Sharr. At the very least it was straight up his alley so to speak. Unlike his companion, Nefarion had been forced to learn the ways of the drow the hard way and while he had learned his lessons well he had never felt as though the cold blood manner of his people was truly his way. In the end it hadn't mattered however, he had proven himself to be a survivor in every sense of the word and in so doing he had learned what it meant to be drow. He had survived his upbringing, and beyond that he had not only survived the battle between houses that had claimed the lives of his family but also his solitary trek into the depths of the Underdark. It was more then likely that he was the sole survivor of his family as of now, not that he had risked his chance at freedom by staying around long enough to find out. If it hadn't been for his encounter with Rath'Sharr while wandering the tunnels of the Underdark there is no telling where Nefarion might have ended up.

Nefarion's momentary reverie was interrupted by Rath'Sharr's nod before his heading off towards the main gate. Not bothering to wait on the others Nefarion didn't hesitate to take off from the meeting after his companion and follow him towards the waiting caravan. Soon enough they would see what this day would lead to.

The companionable silence held between himself and Rath'Sharr was interrupted as they left the courtyard by Khetarin chiming in, "Nefarion, Rath, what do you think about this mission? Are the thieves really that good, or is this Sheriff Green true to his name and too inept to actually catch a common thug?"

"With our luck, probably a bit of both," Nefarion answered over his shoulder with a barely notice able smile. "While I cannot say what we will learn of the Sheriff just yet, I did have a strange vision during Trance last night.. I am not sure what it all meant but I definitely got a sense that we would come across magic at play on this job. We will simply have to wait and see what that entails."

I suppose I am something of a history buff (or nut depending on who you ask ) but my interest stems from personal history I suppose. My father was a Marine in Vietnam and much like my character for this game his uncle was a Master Sergeant who convinced him to enlist. My grandfather I sadly never got to know as he died at the end of WWII but I've seen pictures of him from the war sitting with his machine gun (funny enough my dad was a machine gunner as well) and my father has passed on some stories. I suppose one of my greatest sources is a Marine Corp Major who is something of an adoptive father to my dad and he in turn fought in the Korean War. I've spent a great deal of time learning all of sorts of things from him as he is the closest thing I have ever known to having a grandfather. And I've been told my great grandfather fought in WWI but I know thing more about him then that.. I suppose my interest first peaked because my dad wouldn't talk about Vietnam and what we learn in school is so limited (and to be honest it isn't really the whole truth though your average person will never realize this).. in fact it wasn't until after I went to college that my father really opened up and began sharing stories of his youth (many of which are bitter sweet at best and some are down right disturbing) but the fact that he finally feels comfortable speaking to me about such things is more important then the stories themselves.

But beyond my rambling personal narrative there lies a simple truth that has led me to learn, and more importantly to remember, the stories of those who have come before me. How can we understand the world we live in today if we know nothing of the past? And more importantly, how can we understand the true value of the life we live today if we know nothing of the price that was paid for us to have it? By remembering and learning from those who have gone before me I do my own small and insignifcant part in honoring their memory and their service. It is the least I can do.. and while I may well be the only person my age who will never forget December 7th 1941 I cannot help but feel that someone, living or dead, is heartened by that remeberance. That makes it worth while in my mind at least.

And if you wish to look more introspectively then there is always the fact that human beings today are driven by the same passions they were driven by in past, and so long as this is true history will continue to repeat itself in definitely. As such it is only through learning of the past that we can hope to change our future. In other words, if you wish to learn about today you should study yesterday. As a wiser man then me once said...

If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development. -Aristotle

Pistols were only issued to officers, except interestingly enough for paratroopers who were all issued pistols regardless of rank. The reason being of course should be obvious.. it is much easier to draw and use a pistol while strapped to a parachute then to attempt to wield a rifle.
