Subject: just listening

Kordar sat back and listened to the whole conversation between their group and the sheriff. Kor wasn't one for asking too many questions. He did like where the conversation was going. It seemed Khetarin was indeed onto something here.

The robberies did seem random but nothing that was stolen was not returned shortly after. This didn't seem like a game to whoever was doing it. There had been on encounters with anyone from what the sheriff had said. He was sure someone would have reported it if there had been laughing nearby when someone was recovering one of the items. If the robberies were just that, random, then why only leave them in the forest, there was plenty of other places to leave them: in the plains on the other side of town, in other people's houses, on other houses. No, they were left in to be easily found within the forest close to the town.

They were definitely looking for something and they don't know what it is yet. Maybe the thieves aren't the ones looking for the item. Maybe they are only helping someone else look for the item and haven't been told what it is or what it can do. Kor was beginning to wonder if there was anyone else that had moved here recently that might have brought something important with them, maybe even they didn't know what it was.

"Sheriff, if I might ask. Has anyone else moved in here recently besides the widower, or has someone just made it back from a long trip shortly before this began. I'm wondering if someone unknowingly brought some item into town that these thieves might be after. From what everyone else has said, I'm assuming all parties involved might not even know what the item is or what secret it might hold."

With that, Kor looked around to see if any of the other party members were thinking along the same lines as Khet or himself.

Subject: Camping for the night yet?

I totally overlooked the fact that Bruno had the ring as well. That will definitely make the guard duties easier for everyone. I guess we will wait for the first "breaking for camp" post to worry about who's going to go when as far as shifts go for night duty. If Patrick and Bruno sleep first then get up, Patrick will just need an hour around dawn for prayer for a refreshed spells list and mana pool. I guess he can do that while everyone else is packing up and getting breakfast.

I'm hoping to get Talon fully going on the first night's camp with at least some of the info about the gnolls and/or priestess though we might have to wait longer before he'd tell us about her, still being close to the city. Maybe with Bruno's help, we can at least get the gnolls addressed as we'll be needing to know about where they usually attack the traveling merchants at along the way to Leafhaven. That should give the group an idea of where they'd be come from, general area only of course.

I guess we'll have to wait in see huh?

Subject: Heading to the wagon

Patrick was up and about well before the most of the group. This was the normal, even after a bit of drinking. Patrick had gotten his horse ready and was almost to the meeting spot and he saw Talon already there with the wagon making the last of the adjustments before settling in on waiting for everyone else.

Patrick hailed "Good Morning, Pelor seems to be favoring us this fine day." "I thought I was going to be the first but I guess I have a few things still to learn before I beat an old dog like you first thing in the morning. I figure the rest of the group will be here shortly. Hopefully none of them gave you too much trouble after I slipped out to find a suitable mount for the trip."

Patrick made idle chat with Talon while waiting for the rest of the group. He made much to ask Talon but knew it would have to wait until probably a good day's travel out of the city before Talon would open up them about anything he heard or knew about their current location or inhabitants.

Patrick was glad to hear when Talon called for everyone to move out. He fall in beside the wagon as he hoped to continue the steer the conversation else where while Talon was directing the wagon.

Subject: Along side the wagon

Having left the bar after only a few drinks, Patrick headed off towards the stables to see about getting a horse for the journey. He knew they'd all be needing one since Talon's wagon was going to be full and there didn't seem to be any other wagons going on the trip. Patrick thought to himself, "that's probably a good thing. easier to protect less."

Patrick was not worried about time. After acquiring a Ioun stone from the temple some years back to help with his bad eating and sleeping habits when researching old texts and laws, he'd gotten used to needing very little sleep and only food and drink when he felt like it.

This made it so he could take his time finding a horse and getting everything else packed for the trip. He decided on a simple warhorse with a military saddle (he knew he was not that good on a horse.) He also loaded the saddle bags with enough feed for the journey to Leafhaven.

With that, he went back to his temple room for some light reading and his usual prayers in the morning before heading out to meet up with the group.

Subject: Sorry for the delay

Ok, So I finally have some time to post, YAY lol. I've been looking over the past several posts, both on here and on the main story thread as well. I'll be posting some catch up posts to make up for the lack of them lately.

As for the most recent post on here, I've been looking at my character sheet and I only need a total of 3 hours time to be fully rested and have my praying for the day done on my cleric. That seems I can take all of the night guard duty besides for 2 hours right at the end, and 1 hour at dawn for praying. We could work it where someone just takes over for him 3 hours before sunrise and just rotate who's turn it is to be the "pick up" man.

And about Patrick's position within the caravan, I was going to have him ride beside Talon in the cart/wagon if there is room. If there is not, then I'll have him ride his horse as close to Talon as possible.

Where is everyone else going to be. I'd presume our rogue friend wouldn't want to be in the front so I was thinking the following order would work:

[Behufil] [Bruno]
[Patrick] [Talon/Wagon]
[Garrick] [Isilifeline]

This would allow for 2 heavy hits in the front, Garrick to help Isi (you know he wouldn't mind that) in the back and Patrick center to help either pair if needed and also help protect Talon. Let me know if any of you were thinking differently. (Also, I'm assuming that Talon might want a word or two in as to where people should be or who will be protecting him and helping protect the wagon.)

Sorry for the long post, now to figure out the game posts to match this lol.

Ok, I posted on the game thread. That should get us moving towards heading out of town in the next day or so (in game time). Hopefully I left enough to be asked by others or time spacing within the post for people to interject when they feel they must.

Looking forward to the next game post now

Subject: About the gold and trip

Patrick look across the group and then back to Talon before going on.

"This is the group plus 1 more. There is no need to worry about him right now as he as probably gone to clear his head before the trip. I do not pretend to be in charge of our group but I believe I can speak for all of us when I say the pay matters little to us on this trip. If need, I will pay the others 1g a day for the trip if you pay us in information along the way. Also, we'd like to be promised a chance to 'interact' with any gnolls we come across. We have made a promise to our currently absent comrade that we'd help with an issue he currently is having with them in a way. I'm sure you'd like to dwindle their numbers down so that you can continue your trade routes with the other cities."

Patrick pauses to look at the rest of the group again and also makes a quick scan of the bar to see if any of the patrons were paying a little too much attention to their conversation.

Patrick continues in a hushed voice, "We'd also like some information, rumors even, on some other matters that I do not think would be safe to talk about just yet. Promise us you'll answer our questions once on the trip, even if it's as simple as an answer of you don't know, then I think we only need to work out the details of where are your carts, who will be riding where and if we need to pick up mounts or extra supplies before we leave. Also, we'd like to know as much about the goods being transported as we can. It will make for protecting us and you along with the goods a lot easier than not knowing."

With that, Patrick settles into the chair closest to Talon but facing most of the bar and waves for the barmaid to bring 2 house tankards. Both would be for Talon as there was no need for him to drink with his ioun stone flying closely around the crown of his head. He figured after this, it'd be only polite to offer their new temp boss some drinks. Hopefully maybe they'd get a story or two out of him before the day was through.

Guys, let me know if you want Patrick to step in and start working out the details with Talon on the trip there (and back if we get that far). I know Patrick is going to be (one of) the main diplomat for the group but I don't want to be stepping on anyone's toes by just steamrolling through parts of it without giving everyone enough time to post their side of things.

Me, Suspicious? Never... lol

Yes, I would say that Patrick is very suspicious of those he does not know well. The guard seemed honest but with the priestess having been that close, we can never be too sure how far her "taint" runs...

I'm ok with Bruno not being at the bar when we discuss the trip with Talon. I don't want us going there and overbearing him, especially if we arrive too late to stop the drinks from flowing too quickly into the old man lol. I'm assuming my guy will try to handle most of the diplomatic discussions and issues where as Bruno or Isili will be our bouncers so to speak. They can handle the scare tactics if we need to force someone into doing something for us, though Patrick always hopes that is not needed on our quests.

I believe the rest of us are all heading to the bar to discuss the trip with Talon and I will post once we have arrived at the bar and have a setting to work with other then a generic Bar. What is everyone's thoughts on what to do once we get there and how to go about beginning the discussion with Talon?

Topic: It's time to hand out the pink Shirt now
Subject: still laughing

Ok, that last post still has me laughing. I'm glad none of my groups have encountered the paranoid type yet. I have played with one member several times and he has almost always managed to build himself a swashbuckler and would always pick up the feats so he could go first and likely strike every attack. However, he had nothing to back up his character either physically or damage output wise. So we'd watch him take off first, run into the mobs and then be the first to have to run away. I think we even started handing the pink shirt out for that as he did it too often for us not to make some type of joke(s) about it.

BTW, glad to see such good posts so far. I was worried there for a lil that I had derailed my own post into a debate over couples playing together lol. Hopefully we'll get more people on here to post. Though I hope to avoid any *facelick* action in here lol

Subject: sense motive check

Tiamat, since a lot of that last conversation had some underlying themes to it, I was wanting to do a sense motive check just to make sure he was sincere plus get the full sense of the guard.

Also, if any of the group members were close enough would they also be able to tell if they guy was trying to buff us into going to the tavern or with the guard's "father" so we could be led into a trap OR if he was being as sincere as I thought he was.

We are still right outside of the room we met the priestess in and I'm pretty sure none of us were 100% fooled by her act/words. I can not help but think she knows more about where we are headed then she has revealed and I doubt even if asked she would tell us more unless we pried with some force (not such a good idea right now). So, I'm sure we are all a lil hesitant to just go rushing headfirst at the first piece of "advice" we get. (though I think Bruno might at the mention of the gnolls lol)

Sorry for the long post, let me know what you or anyone else thinks.

"I assure you, with the information you have just given me, we'd be fools not to group up with your father on this trip. I am sure once we are grouped up, we will all be safer on the journey there."

"And do not worry, I will see that all arrive in good health as that is what my god has called for me to do. Ask your god for a watchful eye over those you care for and I will ask Pelor the same. A little extra guidance from those above does not hurt, right?"

"Now, you said he'd be at the Blind Beholder Tavern here shortly around Noon correct? Would you be so kind as to let me know your name? So that way, I may let your father know that you send him your best wishes and have sent us to him for service if he will have us."

After finishing the conversation with the guard and getting directions to the tavern, Patrick lets everyone know what's going on and the advice given by the guard. Patrick specifically mentions the gnoll raiders to the group as to make sure Bruno was aware of a possible lead on his family. It seems this Talon Stonecipher would be of great help getting there and also provide information we need of the area.

Patrick murmurs a lil prayer to Pelor as the group heads out to find the tavern and Talon.

I'd suggest doing the subscribe thing at the bottom of the thread page if you have not done so for any of these threads.

Subject: information?

Yeah, I was hoping someone in the group had been able to gather information during the search for the sheriff. Since we didn't really get more information then what we already knew, I'd say we need to have the sheriff help arrange boarding for us at the Inn in town. We are likely to get (more) information there and maybe it will give more time for people in the party to try gathering more info before night. (I'm assuming it's about mid-day now when we are talking to the sheriff, right??).

I'm assuming with our current group some type of ambush could be set up over the night to catch any thieves that try to strike at the new comings for untapped wealth. What is everyone else's thoughts on the matter. Do we try that or do we sleep the night away and head randomly into the forest looking for the forest bandits' hideout? I think it's a matter of do we try to ambush them or let them ambush us... I guess if we go in looking for the ambush then we'd be probably as prepared as if we try to ambush them...

Sorry, not sure what else to do at this point or maybe I'm getting too far ahead of the game here.

Subject: if Patrick had known

Having been the first to show respect to the priestess and leaving the room upon her finishing the mission briefing, Patrick missed all of the halfling conversation with the priestess and was slowly picking up the pieces that he missed from the other party members who had heard it.

Patrick walks over to the Halfling and says to him "If I had known of your plight before going to the priestess I would have made the inquiry for you or at least with you as being both of the church I hope she would have been more inclined to speak less hastily to me. The next time you are in need of diplomatic words to help loosen the information from someone please let me be of service. That is why I am here. There is no need for me to be here if you, or any of the others, do not rely on me when help is needed."

With that being said, Patrick walks over to the closest guard out of hear shot of that conversation and the words just passed between the group. As he heads, he tells the group, he's going to inquire about any travel arrangements needed and any issues we might have on the way there or once we get there. "Even if he doesn't have the information directly, we should at least get pointed in the right direction before we leave." And with that he begins talk with the guard.

Yeah, sorry about that. Tiamat, I sent you a reply to the pm about the weapon. just to be clear, didn't realize I went over the limit, just remove the flaming from the attributes of the mace but keep everything else the same. That should take care of the issue of the cost limit.

Also, it's been pointed out to me several times that I can't use the spiked gauntlets and the gloves of storing but I just wanted to make it clear that my guy is only wearing 1 of each, as they come as a single item listed in the DMG and are not made as a pair. The DMG specifically says that only a single glove of storing is produced in the crafting process and my guy only has one on. I know it will look weird on a guy to have one of each on but he is a battle medic and doesn't care about fashion sense either lol.

Yeah, I guess it would have made a bigger difference in the groups had the couples actually been married at the time. However, they were only dating and we only know how it can go if the relationship ends badly there.

Back to the pink shirt, I'm glad to see many people on here that understands the idea of it. I'm thinking about adding it as a cursed item to the first campaign I run on here. I'm sure there will surely be shenanigans that follow any other receive the shirt (unwillingly most likely) lol.

After looking through all my dead characters, it looks like my first one was a simple sorcerer. I don't think I got him too far in before that one fell apart and we decided to start another campaign. The next one was my favorite by far and the only one of my characters to make it make it pass level 16 so far. He was a gestalt Monk Fighter and a silver half dragon. I had him take the vow of poverty along with a few other feats from that book and he was one mean guy to the baddies lol.

Unless I'm mistaken (and I could be) a +1 weapon with a +1 equivalent enhancement like flaming is under the 10% max of 4,900gp. As I had noted on my heavy mace, the total cost was 4337gps. That is under the limit. So yes, if you went with a +1 with a +1 enhancement, you could have done more then just the +1. +2s of any kind were out of the range as they are 8,000gp. +1 bonus plus +1 enhancement not equal to +2 bonus unless, again, I missed something there lol.

Yeah, our D&D group hasn't had a girl in it for a while now. It's never a good thing having people dating/married playing together in a game and then having something bad happen to their relationship. I've seen it ruin many a campaign.

But anyways, the reason for the shocking pink and wording was to make sure it wasn't plain enough or girly enough for a female character to want it lol.

Subject: It's time to hand out the pink Shirt now

Ok, first of all, what's the pink shirt? Well, it's a figurative item my old D&D group came up with for when one of the characters in the group was acting rather cowardly or too overly cautious for his class/level/personality/etc. Now I've always pictured the shirt looking as follow: Bright Neon Pink, Guys' cut, Always 1 size too big for whatever character earned it, and with the words I R COWARD written in Big Black Letters.

Now, I have to admit that a few of my characters had earned the pink shirt from time to time, especially when I was first starting out playing. For the most part, I always found myself playing a monk or monk gestalt and found I liked to use Spring Attack a bit too often, like going up against a monster 2 levels below me and after stepping up and crit'ing him or tripping him and hitting him, I'd bounce back like he had just bit my hand.

So, I'm curious to hear about some of those characters you have come across that would have earned the pink shirt. They can be our characters, characters in the same campaign as you or from just about anywhere else. Simply let us know the settings and why you think they would have earned the pink shirt.

Subject: 1 hit kill

Yeah, I'm curious about that death too. I've had to deal with the mortal 1 hit killing "blow" before. It was not fun.

One of the many characters I have played over the years was a gestalt Barbarian. I forget what I had him paired with but we were high lvled and we were facing a demon. We chopped him down and I took the most dmg. Still being pissed from the fight. I cleave the head off. As I'm off chasing after the rolling head. the body exploded and I was left with only the head as a trophy from the fight. Since it was still a fresh kill and not wanting to put it down, my guy simply carried it in his hand along. Unfortunately for us, we came across another demon. This one had the ability to use implode and after seeing the head, you can guess who he immediately used that ability on.
Luckily we had just came from a very talented hidden group of elves that we saved and in returned offered a single use of any services they could provide free of service. Guess where my ass got brought back to lol. I'm pretty sure my dude forever hated demons after that and killed any he saw. You would think he would have learned and just stayed away from them. NOPE lol.
