Blunt objects work well on them.

"Skeleton pirates? What manner of twisted evil is that?" Elyra scanned her memory for any information on such but came up empty. "Perhaps it is time to get going. We may have overstayed our welcome." Elyra readied swords but did not yet draw them as she preferred to avoid this fight if possible.

Elyra looked around the rubble. The lack of human life was not as discomforting as the lack of any other life as well. From all appearances humans had never been here other than the presence of the rubble. No carrion birds flew overhead as there was no carrion anywhere. No skeletons either. Gone were any metal objects. No clue to what had taken place here. Crow was unable to determine how long the city lay in ruins.

"This is most unsettling. Whatever did this took pains to remove everything of value or that provided a link to humanity. Perhaps we should move on."

"So it was your uncle I saw perform. I guess that does make sense that you were the young lad. I can see you have changed since our last meeting. You are all grown up and out on your own. Lets see, that would make you thirty then. I may be older but in many ways I believe you are now the one who would be seen as more mature." Elyra leaned back and giggled. "I plan to never really become mature. The years may pass but I refuse to grow up. Old is for those who are no longer young at heart."

"Well, lets see. I left home and wandered for about 2 years before I found the bard academy. Then I was there for 20 years so I guess I have been on my own for 22 years now. Not very long." Elyra thought back to the way Areldor reacted to her comment about short lived races. Then a thought hit her. "Were you the boy?"

"Of course he was cute. All wide eyed at the wonderous tricks his father was doing. Spellbound as he was by the flow of colors on the finely dressed bards and the tumbling routines of the acrobats. Too bad he only had a few years to be a child for he was at least part human." Elyra's face showed a bit of concern, "I didn't mean to offend you. Just it is hard for me to imagine such quick transitions between life stages. By elvin standards I am barely more than a teenager myself."

"Well, what was he wearing? Let me think, it has been a while." Elyra laughed. After a bit of pondering she spoke again. "I believe it was a reddish tunic. But it could have been a burnt orange." Elyra paused a moment then added, "I do seem to remember that he had a child with him. Maybe his son. Cute kid." Elyra leaned back to enjoy the feel of the sun on her face and the spray of the salt air.

"Haverden, yes I have been there many times for the festivals. I think the first time I was there was about 40 years ago when I was just a child. My family would visit human cities on rare occasions. I think that is where I got my itch to become a bard. Never had a chance to play there because of being a student. But I do remember hearing many other bards as well as seeing quite a few jesters and magicians." Elyra thought a moment. "Ahh, there was one magician who was a bit differant. I believe he called himself an illusionist. Was that you?"

"Well, lets see. I know it was during my first year at the academy so maybe 20 years ago. Then again a couple years later during harvest festival." Taking a moment to think she added. "They usually frown on students taking paying jobs as we are not accredited bards until we graduate and we would be taking jobs away from other bards, especially with so many students at the academy. Of course I wore much plainer clothes then. Now that I am a full bard the outfit I was wearing that night was kind of a calling card. Names are hard to remember and most folks cannot write so descriptions are important. Not too good for business to not stand out." Gesturing at her current outfit, "As you can see on a trip such as this I tend to dress in this plainer attire but always keep the hat."

Subject: The boat ride

As the eye patches were handed out, Elyra laughed to herself. The crew certainly had an odd sense of comradeship. Seeing no reason to go against the crew’s tradition, she dutifully donned her eye patch. Then, when she was sure no one was looking she took it off and poked a small hole in the center, just enough that she enjoyed fairly normal vision but not enough to be noticed easily.
Elyra took in the sights and sounds of the sea. Waves crashing against the bow set up a rhythm and the ever present gulls sang a song of their own in time with it. Even the creaking and groaning of the hull and sails seemed to add to the ocean’s tune. Perhaps only a bard would notice such things.

Starting on the first day of their journey several of the seekers took to chumming the waters as their stomachs revolted against the constant motion of the shallow draft vessel. Thankfully Elyra felt no ill effects. During the day she engaged in conversation with the other seekers and the crew. As the sun set each night she pulled out her lute and entertained the others with songs. Some were old sea shanties, bawdy and spirited. Others were tales of heroes fallen in battle. But her favorite were songs from the elves. These she played mostly for herself as the crew did not quite have the ears for such and called for more of the randy songs.

It was the morning of the third day when she approached Areldor. “I don’t believe we had a chance to finish our conversation. Are you indeed from Waltersheim? I seem to detect a bit of accent and you do look familiar.” The two carried on many conversations over the next few days.

Day six found the group within sight of their first destination. Eager to explore a new city the seekers set out quickly. Hope turned to confusion as they finally sighted what remained of the once proud town. Something had laid waste to it. Where once buildings stood and crowds bustled now only ruins and silence prevailed. Her thoughts about what could have caused such devastation were broken when Crow inquired about the new plan. “We have traveled this far so no sense in turning back now. I’d suggest a cautious approach as whatever did that would have no trouble dealing with a group like ours. Might find some treasure hidden away in the ruins.”

Elrya smiled, "Are you perhaps from Waltershiem? Seems I remember seeing a magic show there by someone who looked quite a bit like you."

Replying in the elvish tounge, "I am Elyra, a recent graduate from the bard academy. Your dress is rather memorable but I see no lute or other musical instrument. Would I be far off if I guessed you practiced a bit of magic?" Elyra looked again at her guest, absolutely sure she had seen him before.

Elyra saw a somewhat familiar figure coming her way. She could not quite place where she had seen him before but was sure she had. Since her "date" for the evening had ceased to be of any further use she leaned in close to him. "Now is when you say goodnight." Seeing the look in her eyes the sailor took his leave. Looking back to the approaching figure she kicked out a chair. "Have a seat?"

Bards and illusionists don't regularly mingle but I suppose we may have seen a show we performed or have heard of each other.

Elyra made her way to the docks, onto an interesting looking boat and sought out a few of the crew. Many of them gave her strange looks and went about their regular business. One or two came over to speak with her. The first was a bit gruff and suggested she do some things she was not sure were physically possible. However, the second was more outgoing. Sensing a chance to gather some information as well as potentially some new news she spent several hours with the sailor. She even went so far as to invite him for a night of drinking. During the course of the evening she picked his brain about the islands surrounding the area as well as asking for news from far and wide. Only once did the man get a bit too fresh. Once he reset his dislocated finger he was never more inclined to try anything funny. After a few mugs of wine, Elyra broke out her lute and entertained the gather patrons with song. A kindly innkeeper even forgave her entire bar tab to thank her for the extra income he enjoyed that night. Finally begging forgiveness for her dry throat she packed her lute and bid the sailor goodnight before retiring for the evening.

Edited to not be our specific boat to not mess witht he story. I am assuming that one sailor would chase a skirt. They cannot all be gay. hehe

First level ranger can find his butt using both hands and not much else. 1st lvl bard can carry a tune if equipped with a proper bucket.

The ranger should probably study the map each day but because he is out front and might get killed he should not carry the only map. Map is probably best kept in the main party. Of course the carrier should be able to read but that is kind of obvious.

Elyra arrived on the dock and took a look at the ship that was to transport the group across the waters. “I hope the seas are calm.” She thought. The low slung, dragon ship was not at all what she expected. She thought back to what she had heard about sailing and sailors. Usually, a bigger ship was seen as better. ‘Strike one’. Women on board ships were considered by many as bad luck. ‘Strike two’. Ships carried boats on them and this was no ship according to that requirement. ‘Strike three’. Perhaps this was an instance where this was the 1 in 100 that defied the odds.

Having seen the ship she made her way to the tavern. Most would have gone to the tavern first but she figured a quick look at the boat was in order first. Upon arrival at the tavern she met the others and after a few introductions it seemed that all agreed on a plan. She could hardly wait to see the reaction of the others to their mode of transport.
