There's No Place Like Rome

Dear Fellow Innmates

Since I am not spread thin enough on RDI (only three games, and one more on the way), and find myself without enough to do, I've decided to check interest on one more...

I'd like to run a freeform game set in the Roman Empire. Particularly, I'd like to base the feel and general plotline off of HBO's Rome, but having seen this show or having an extensive knowledge of ancient Rome are not necessary - if you have a serviceable knowledge of Rome and an interest in playing around in a historical RP, that is all that is needed.

We would be RPing as soldiers in Caesar's personal army - the mighty 13th legion. The 13th was a renowned and feared group of fighters that secured a victory for Caesar in Gaul and against in the Roman civil war against the Pompeyans.

Ideally, we would have a small group of legionnaires (about 3-6), and one centurion.

The premise is thus: the year is 52 BC, and the Gallic Wars are coming to an end. Gaius Julius Caesar and Gnaeus Pompey Magnus, who once ruled Rome together as something akin to brothers are now in competition for the love of the people. The conservative senators are scared - Caesar, though an aristocrat himself, has money, power, an army and a love of the people; that's the kind of man that could make himself king. Meanwhile, the war with Gaul has made Caesar ever more wealthy and powerful, and as it draws to a close, the senate fears that he will return and become a dictator.

You are a member of the 13th legion, 10th cohort, and part of a detachment of specialists answerable directly to General Mark Antony. You are to be some of the best and brightest of the legionnaires, and utilized for missions and assignments requiring speed, strength and agility above and beyond what would be expected from the normal legionnaire. This could be anything from theft to assassination to spying to diversionary tactics to you name it. The point is: You're paid to be the best, and you'd better earn your pay.

Please post back if you have any interest in such a game. This would be sort of a lighter side-project - i.e. there's no pre-planned end for it, no strict posting schedule, and no dice, but expected relative quality of posting (no one-liners) and respect of game structure and flow (respect the GM, no god-moding, etc.). Use Star Trek: Operation Persephone as a model for what kind of atmosphere is expected.

Thanks,
-Your Humble Cap'n

Looks like ...

..... an interesting adventure, but I just do not have any more room on my plate to take on another adventure!

Especially with a project I am working on and vacation coming in two weeks!

Thanks for the invite!

Interested!

I'd like to play. I'm only involved in 2 games at the moment, Silent Hill and Op: Persephone, so am already up on the free-form gaming. If you get enough to play, you can definitely count me in

Oh Oh! *waves hand up in the air and jumps up and down*

Rome... oh...
I own both seasons of HBO's Rome and LOVE them, was actually wondering just this past week if I could do a game for it, so I'm totally in, if you'll have me.
I'm so excited!! Would love to play a Pullo inspired character, he's the best. Although if Mark Antony is going to be as hot as he was in the showI might just have to have my char be gay
Not that Mark was, but he could oogle him... it might be funny... hmm... *grin*

Thanks for the invite Cap'n Lou but I'm not much of a free from player, it looks interesting and i'll be following it but it's not the game for me, however interesting it might be.

I will however be keeping a special eye on public health, army health and medicine as ancient medicines are a bit of a fascination for me and just having taken an exam in Roman Public Health and Medicine.

Remember at this time doctors are free to all citizens of Rome, although they are Greek slaves, and public health is paramount as the Roman army relays on conscription, Roman army camps have bath houses, gymnasiums, toilets with running water and are never situated near a swamp or other unhealthy environment.

My fellow historian!

Kudos to you Loki... another good history post. That sounds like it would be a fascinating class you just took. I've actually done more with Greek history, compared to Roman (especially Roman Republic). I'm glad to see we might have someone to go to with some Roman questions... I'll be sure to shoot you any I have

Lurking?

Looks like it could make for an entertaining game. I’ve got both HBO series on DVD… not a bad show, though not exactly historically accurate either.

If it’s alright, I’d quite like to lurk in on this one, though there’s no chance I’ll be able to find the time to play any time soon.

You there! Care to join the Roman Army?!

Glad to see the interest,

Duncan74 and Merideth are both welcome members to this game, which I hope we'll be able to get off the ground...

Yes, I know that HBO's Rome isn't always historically accurate; however, whenever the show sacrifices historical precision, it is in exchange for plot and character development or to keep things flowing. And in a roleplaying game, these factors are essential. As such, we're going to be drawing on elements of both the real world and Rome's world...

Still looking for about 2-4 more players.

Oooh, goody

I'm actually quite the fanatic on everything roman. I haven't watched HBO's Rome, but I know a bit about it. It would also be pretty cool to play free-form for the first time in a few years, if you'll have me :p

Welcome

Welcome, Shounin

Update:

No projected start date; I'd like to get at least 1-2 more before we consider beginning.

So far, if I'm not mistaken, we have 3:

Merideth
Shounin

Among those who have already expressed interest, it would be good if you started thinking about whether or not you'd be interested in playing the Centurion.

If we can only get 1 more, I'll probably also portray a Legionnaire. But I'm willing to wait...

Centurion

What exactly are you looking for responsibility wise in the player playing the Centurion? Just so i can better gauge if I'd be interested or not.

Good question

Good call. I'd like to know that too. And it's Duncan74, not Duncan71. For gawd's sake don't make me older than I already am-hehe.

Centurion

The Centurion will be the leader of this band, outranking the Legionnaires under him.

Essentially, as a character, it'll be your job to lead, make the final decisions, etc.

Thanks for info

I gotcha. Well, for my part, I think I'll be content to be a foot soldier, and let someone a little more familiar with the workings of the machine take the Centurion's helm. I have a decent familiarity with Roman history, and haven't watched much of the tv show, so I'll be just fine with saluting someone else as my Centurion.

Can I have a laser cannon? Hehe, just kiddin'.

...

Can the Centurion have a crush on Antony? Because if that's cool I wouldn't mind the position. That is of course if that is alright with everyone else?
