Heck yea

Been away for a couple days, but thanks for the invite. I'd like to play too if you still have openings.

You bet.

Sure thing, Shaithis.

However, Shaithis will be the last player I can accept for this game.

That makes 6 of us, Merideth, Shounin, Duncan74, Loki, Shaithis, and myself.

Try to get your sheets in by next Monday, if possible.

53 BC, last year

I was going to post some historical info for Rome in 52 BC, but then realized that you may be using historical records for your storyline, so in order to avoid that, I figured I'd post about last year instead.

Rome Consuls: Marcus Valerius Messalla and Gnaeus Domitius Calvinus.
Parthian war
Crassus sacks the Temple of Hierapolis and the Temple of Jerusalem on his way to engage the Parthians.
Battle of Carrhae: Romans defeated, and Crassus killed, by Parthians led by Surena.
Gallic War
Caesar defeats a revolt led by Ambiorix near Sabis.
Vercingetorix, an Arverni chieftain, leads a revolt against Caesar in Central Gaul.

Armenia
Artavasdes II becomes king of Armenia.

Historic Events List

Just to clarify what the 13th legion was doing during the events past in this year.

March — Siege and capture of Avaricum
April–May — Siege and repulse from Gergovia
July — Battle of the Vingeanne
July — Siege of Alesia

Were our characters involved in these events, if so what were they doing during it?
If not, what were we doing instead of having the honor of fighting in them?

That...

That is part of your character background, and thus, up to you.

Unless you can think of a really good reason why you wouldn't be at Alesia, however, I would imagine that you all would have been.

Ranks

Since a Centurion typically commands a Century (60-100 men; originally 100, hence the name - but typically around 80), I'm going to rule that Merideth's Centurion previously commanded a Century, having made that rank, but has now been reassigned. Though her Centurion will no longer command that many men, he retains his rank and can be called upon to do so again in the future.

Also, I will be taking the rank of Optio, a Legionnaire chosen by the Centurion to be the second-in-command of a Century. However, the Optio is more of a title than a rank, as an Optio is still a Legionnaire.

And we all have the title of Beneficiarius - a soldier performing an extraordinary task or special assignment.

Also, if someone wants to double as a Clinicus, or medic, that would be great. This is optional; though it would be nice to have someone with some medical knowledge.

Limits

You having my character for Monday is a distinct impossibility, you shall have him between Tuesday or Wednesday as I'm at my dads this weekend.

PS: can my character have a son and his son be in the 13th legion, I won't control him and he wont be in the 10th cohort, I just thought it would add a bit more colour, or color as you Americans insist on spelling it.

I know I've been quiet as of late... sorry been plotting out a murder, but that should be up this weekend and I'll make sure to have in my history to you on Monday at the latest.
Looking foward to putting on that cute little red skirt with you all soon!

Your son

It was uncommon for Legionnaires to marry while being in the army, however, it was not unheard of - you would have to receive a "special dispensation". The reasoning was that a soldier who had a family back home might be more willing to desert if the odds were bad; they preferred men with few attachments. However, if you showed yourself to be honorable and a valuable fighter, you could be granted the right to marry.

My only concern is your son's age - either he'd have to be a raw recruit of relatively young age (in which case he wouldn't be in the 13th), or your Legionnaire would be fairly old, as in mid-late thirties at the youngest. Of course that's not exactly 'old', but it was old for a soldier of those times.

Personally, I have no problem with either of these situations - but do realize that you can't be in your early-mid twenties serving the 13th Legion with your 17 year old son (which I'm sure you do, realize, just making it clear).

Sorry Lou

Sorry Lou, I've tried my best to get a character together but I can't do it. I have no idea what to write for his history and no idea what to make him like.

I'm having some strange sort of block where whenever I sit down I don't know how to make him and when I do have something together I look over it the next day and try to start over again.

I can't get my idea's together over this, I don't know what it is but I'm going to have to drop out. I can only play a charter if I like the idea behind him.

I'm dropping out, you still have 4 players, that's enough isn't it.

Medic!

I can probably double as the Clinicus, although I'd have to read a little about roman medicine (Wikipedia is my friend).

Other than that, I expect to send you my character tomorrow at the latest

Loki

Sorry to lose you, Loki - can't blame yah, and I don't.

Thanks for the interest; we certainly have enough to go with right now, however. I understand how it is with joining games and such - gotta do whatcha gotta do.

And anyway, we've still got Patterns of Deception in the mean time.

Shounin

What I would remember in regards to the medic is that (as I'm sure you know) things like germ-theory weren't yet around. Religion and medicine were deeply intwined. For example, in HBO's Rome, a character receives a severe headwound. The doctor patches him up, but when he's asked when he'll wake up, the doctor simply replies, "Today, tomorrow...maybe never. You might try making an offering...a white rabbit usually works."

Marcus Vitellius Panthera

Didn't know whether you wanted this by PM or this way.

Name: Marcus Vitellius Panthera
Age: 21
Description: Vitellius is nothing special when it comes to his body; His height is average, he isn't more fit or stronger than other experienced legionaires and even his stamina is below average for the 10th cohort (although probably above average when looking at the legion as a whole).

What puts Vitellius apart from his peers is his mind. Not only is he the 10th cohort's medic, he is also very good at fighting in formation and his sword fighting technique makes up for his apparent lack of speed and strength.

Vitellius is very calm by nature, usually assessing all possibilities before making a decision on something.

Bio: Marcus Vitellius Panthera was born to a plebeian merchant and his wife. He wasn't a strong child, and wasn't very good at sports, but he was very bright and his parents made sure he got a good education.

He originally intended to become a doctor, but ended up signing up for the legions. He quickly got into shape, and was a very fast learner. Eventually he was moved to the 10th Cohort, mainly for his medical experience and also his ability to adapt to unpredictable situations, where he has been stationed for over a year.
