the new Star Trek movie

I went to see this one this weekend. My impressions follow:

Superb casting. I can absolutely buy everyone in their roles. Kirk was a little more of a hothead than I would have liked, Spock was a little too angry himself, and Chekov did little more than serve as a punchline... but all told, great job. Scotty was a scene stealer every time, loved grouchy McCoy. The acting itself was spot on. Loved the dialogue, loved the moments of humor.

Of course, the effects were superb. This was the best-looking Trek ever. No surprise there.

The story was solid. I'm not sure that I'm entirely happy about WHAT they did here - there's a huge rewrite of the Trek universe's history - but I can't really complain at HOW they did it - the method they used was pretty much spot-on Trek stuff that we've seen quite a few times before. They've also cleverly set themselves up to be able to do pretty much anything that they want, now, and still be canon.

Bottom line? See. The. Movie. As advertised, it is a complete reboot of the Trek franchise - it stays true to the heart and soul of everything you've ever loved about Trek, but breathes new life into everything. Well worth the price of admission!

Awesome to the power of ten

I saw Star Trek on the weekend as well. Awesome movie. The storyline is good, the action is great and the comedy is well timed. It was like putting on an old boot or glove, characters were comfortable and felt good to see again.

I felt that the movie did a good job of fleshing out the ensemble cast. That being said, Scotty and McCoy stole most of the scenes they were in. Chekov I felt they gave more of a role to this time. Never sure what was his purpose orginally other than to talk funny and look like Davy Jones. In this he has a distinct role but they did keep aspects of him for the comedy. Uhura was much better defined in this film.

Go see it - you will love it.

Seen it

Like those two, I went to see the new Star Trek movie this weekend as well. Unlike them though, I am not a diehard Trek fan, although I do enjoy the later series. So what can I say about the movie that they haven't? Probably nothing. I liked it, and I would like to see it again.

So my message to you: Even if you are not a Trekkie, the price of the ticket is totally worth seeing it. You can enjoy the whole thing, even though you've never watched an episode or movie set in the Trek universe in your life, because it resets the whole idea of the Trek universe. Therefore, you won't miss out on the fun. And there is much fun to be had in watching this movie.

I recommend it.

agreement

The casting, writing, acting, and effects were all incredible. Characters were properly realized and I bought everything, too. Well, I rolled my eyes a *tiny* bit when they had to squeeze in some classic lines from the show, but I was cheering on the inside at the same time.

My biggest issue is the shaky camera and the rapid zoom. Used sparingly, these devices can have great impact. Slathered liberally like A-1, they only serve to disguise the real flavor of a delicious movie.

This article lays it out really well, I think.

Jennifer Morrison as Kirk's mom was a treat, too.

RehGo

Going to hit this up this week. Also pre-emptive NO SPOILERS.
The reviews are so amazing (in this thread and elsewhere), I think this could be a big one.

my turn

I saw it Sunday. Overall A+ with spades. I agree there were some classic moments that were just a bit *too* cheesy (pure fanservice) for my tastes, but it wasn't enough to be annoying.

All the characters were perfectly cast, but I must agree that Bones and Scotty easily stole every scene they were in. I think they wanted to emphasize sides of Kirk and Spock that we never got to see before, and that's why their personalities were a bit... overdone. It was interesting to see them still very raw.

Anyway it was fresh, modern and still strangely familiar. Go see it while it's still in theaters.

Totally agree

Movie was very good.. and yes moments were chessy but hey... so was the Original ST... come on.. you have to admit that is so.

I liked it and right from the beginning they set it up so people cant really complain about anything that happens that might be out of the norm for the timeline...

Overall I see more movies in this new series.. if they can keep the same main actors it would be worth it.

NO SPOILERS? I didnt agree to that Grugg... well if you dont want spoilers dont read any further... go... eat something.. I think I seen your food bowl somewhere around here...

But if you continue to read then you will find this spoiler interesting....

Doesnt it just blow your mind how they revealed that Kirk is actually Jean-Luc Picard's Grandfather?

LOL at Ye Olde

Very cute...but as for ST...Oh. My. Ever. Loving. GOD!

I squealed through the whole thing with my daughter, ensuring the next generation of Trekkies (living long and prospering, if you know what I mean!)

I'm trying to decide who's my favourite character and I'm having a tough time....Sulu, Chekov and Uhura are so much more than the peripheral characters they were before, and Karl Urban as McCoy is a revelation! There are a million fansites launching, I'm sure

From the trailers, I was pretty sure that I was going to like the actors playing Kirk and Spock, and I most certainly did, but the others were a welcome delight!

Very Awesome Movie

Like Olan above there was a part in the midway point that totally stunned me, but thinking about it after the show it was indeed a interesting plot twist.

I too hope for more movies in this series as I think this one was a good start. Sylar (Zachery Quinto) as Spock was dead on and the love interest was also a good plot twist if I must say .

And of course lastly seeing Leonard Nimoy once again in the role that made him a household name was a nice piece of nostalgia

...

I saw this last week, and it is a great film for all the reasons people have cited above.

I really liked the chap that played Kirk, and the bloke that played Bones is absolutely brilliant. The only think I would say is that Simon Pegg who played Scotty is great except for the terrible accent. As one film critic over on this side of the pond commented: 'the original Scotty had an accent that was 99% Canadian and 1% Scottish...sadly Pegg has managed to lose that 1%'.

Bones

You are aware that the bloke that played Bones is none other than Eomer from Lord of the Rings, right?

So he is. I didn't notice it was the same actor until you pointed it out.
