Home Made Game Stuff

One of the fun things in gaming is to create things to use in your games. I was wondering what sort of things the Innmates may have devised for their games. My DM likes things presented in storey form, I think other DM may want them present in just fact form. In any case is there anyone that would like to share thier cool stuff and how they used it?

I'll go first. After an encounter with a Buhir my Gnome Cleric/Thief wanted figure out how the creature cast lightening. Here my storey of his discovery.

Lightening Jars

During the hours that passed as the party recovered from battle with the giants Rocca wondered how the beast, the Behir, made that lightning bolt that had knocked Gildenrod from his mount. He carefully cut the Behir apart to find it’s secret. He discovered a series of rope like tendons running from sacks in the beasts tail to the teeth. One of the sacks had been ruptured by Gildenrod’s lance and the smell of brimstone and brine was strong. Taking his knife Rocca started to cut one of the small pair of tendons coming off one of the sacks. The tendon was tough. Grabbing the two tendons coming off the sack he pulled hard to slice both. As his blade entered the second, sparks shot from his knife as hot pain coursed up his arm. The small gnome was knock backwards and found himself sitting in the guts and goo of Behir. Rocca’s arm tingled and the chain mail beneath his robe felt warm. Rubbing his arm Rocca smiled to himself because he knew he had found where the Behir got it’s lightning. But how did it cast it out?
Carefully now Rocca started to remove the sacks from the flesh and untangled the tendons. Soon he knew which sacks went to which teeth. Each tooth had ten small sacks. The secret of the flash had to be in the teeth. With the skill of a gem cutter Rocca used a mallet and wooden spikes to remove the teeth. Without touching them or cutting the tendons, he caught each tooth in a wooden box. Only ten of the teeth that had been connected to the tendons. One he had cut the tendons and some of the sacks had been ruined by the lance. How could he save the other nine and what could he do with the one?
Rocca retrieved some canning crocks from the wagon. Because the teeth were in the head of the beast and the sacks were in the tail Rocca sensed there was a need to keep them separated. After fashioning wooden discs with a notch for the tendon Rocca placed the sacks in the bottom of the crock. Coiling the tendons in some brine water, then inserting the disc. Using wooden tongs he placed the tooth last on top of the disc. A candle dripped wax over the notch and around the edge of the disc sealing the brine in the bottom. He seemed to sense that tooth gained more power as he coiled the tendon. Placing the lid on the crock Rocca sealed it and placed it into a wooden storage box. He did the same to the other eight. The damaged sacks and tooth were placed in smaller crocks, Rocca would study them separately.
After carrying the box back to the wagon Rocca took one of the jars from the box. He wanted to know how the Behir threw the lighting from its mouth. Carefully Rocca bored a small hole in the top of the crock, just the size to slip an iron spike into. He hoped the spike would act like a wand and cast the lightning at his intended target. He carried the crock to the edge of the clearing. There about thirty feet away was the trunk of large dead oak tree. He raised the crock and shook it toward the tree. Nothing happened. He tried chanting and then shook it. Nothing again. Rocca heard the laughter coming from the party behind in the camp and knew they had been watching and were now making fun of him. Anger grew in him and in a fit of rage he flung the crock at the tree as he shouted a curse. The crock sailed through the air and crashed into the tree. As the crock shattered and brine water sprayed out a great flash of light roared forth and engulfed the tree. The splitting of wood mixed with a mighty thunderclap as the tree burst into flame. Even at thirty feet the eruption was enough to stagger Rocca backward.
There was silence from the party now and Rocca turned and walked back to the wagon smiling to himself with great satisfaction. He could now cast lightning. For what ever reason each of his jars were as powerful as the Behir’s single attack and he knew how to release it.

In our 2ed game I am a barbarian priest of the Garfolk. My clan leader is Garfield, so course his close companion had to be Ody.

Our group also has Nyrmal the Avenger, Pooky the Shaman Kalvin Battlekrow and Hobbs Greenfern.

I borrowed a concept from an old Dragon magazine issue. The article was "Bazaar of the Bizarre," and featured items of uncertain value. The item in question was an Invisible Ring. I tweaked it by cursing it in as much that if the ring were put on and activated, not only would it turn invisible (the ring, not the wearer) it would not come off, thereby robbing an unlucky PC of a ring slot.

Enamored of the cool double-crossbows from the third Underworld movie, I was researching possible rules to include them in my game. Turns out both the Pathfinder Core Rules and at least one 3.5 book already have them. Shucks.

I did house-rule that Dragonbreath is a natural weapon/ability for Dragons or PC's with class features granting breath weapons, and were not subject to magic-suppression effects or, more pointedly, Dwarven +2 racial bonus to saves vs spells _and spell-like effects_. That's what happens when players try to _dictate_ rather than suggest to me how the game works.

In our 2.0 game we also have an NPC that can be played as a PC. He's a Druid Ranger that also works for the White Mage, high level good guy. The line is, "The name's Pond, James Pond of His Mageasties Secret Service."

I love this kind of thread! Where are the comments, folks?

As the original poster may or may not be aware, the entire campaign setting of Audalis (up there on your main site menu bar) exists because of things we created in game. In the very earliest days, I'd make something up, the players would run with it, and it would become canon.

Nowadays, we accept submissions, and two or three different folks edit and approve before it becomes part of the setting, but I'm very proud of what we do have.

What was Nyrmal the Avenger's Charisma? Also, was there ever a Lyman character? (If there was, he must have epic stealth, for no one's seen Lyman for years.)

A real cast of characters....

Well no Lyman, but I did roll up a Hagar the Horrible as a stand by NPC.

Ok, I couldn't remember Lyman so I had to look him up.

Lyman was a friend of Jon's, who lived with him for a while and was the original owner of Odie. He first appeared on August 7, 1978. However, he had largely disappeared from the comic by 1983 and his disappearance was not fully elaborated upon at the time. His last appearance in the strip was a cameo on Garfield's 10th birthday, June 19, 1988, where he appears in the title panel seated between Jon's father and Liz, he also appears in a flashback panel within the strip.

Recently, Davis was forced to directly address the issue of "What happened to Lyman?" According to Davis, Lyman's original purpose was to be someone, who Jon could actually talk to and express other ideas -- a role more and more taken over by Garfield, himself. Once Lyman was no longer needed for that purpose, he was removed without explanation. Jim Davis has jokingly explained Lyman's sudden disappearance and long absence from the strip on different occasions either by saying that Lyman joined the Peace Corps and was then never heard from again or by saying, "Don't look in Jon's basement."

In the web game, "Scary Scavenger Hunt," he is shown chained onto the wall in the basement of a haunted mansion, as well as screaming in a bathtub upstairs (in a scene clearly referencing the "shower scene" in the film Psycho; even the screeching violins from the infamous scene are played here). In "Scary Scavenger Hunt 2," his head is found inside the kitchen oven Also, on the Garfield webpage in the "Book Nook," Lyman is shown working behind the counter.

Home made stuff

Well, I'm turning a home-made world into a published campaign setting. I've created prestige classes, magic items, spells, and even a completely new core class along with his own series of over 50 mixtures to use in combat. But I can't really post all that here. So I'll just give you a teaser...

The Elemental Fist: A prestige class (easiest for monk characters) that learns to use elemental shrouds as they increase in level, granting them elemental resistances and abilities when their chosen shroud is activated.
