If the NPCs are going to provide info that "forces our hand" can you please post that earlier in the week so we don't waste posting time. I have no issue with Althena's post itself but had it been up at the beginning of thw week we could have made a better plan.
I'm not forcing your hand Keeper, I'm just playing the NPC's, Althena especially, as I see fit. Nothing says YOU have to go up those stairs. Take Lady Dark’s recent post trying to talk Althena out of rushing up the stairs, I think it’s a good one, nothing says you can’t talk the three of them out of going upstairs. The more posts for Yay or Nay the better the die roll chance that she stays committed to going up the stairs or gets her mind changed. It will in the end come down to a roll of 2 10 sided % dice ok, t’s called RPG Interaction, I just set things in motion.
The party going up those stairs is NOT set in stone, however using Althena as I did allows me to warn you, the players, if you wait too long your going to face more enemies then you will fifteen minutes from now. Right now the count is 4 in favor, 1 against going up the stairs, unless of course you want to change your post Keeper as you’re the 4th right now with Lady Dark the 1 against.
AS to Althena being all knowing she's not it's just a well estimated guess on her part as the stairs are cooling even as we speak.

For an 8 hour rest period these 4 are your best choices....
Althena / Female Valar / Fighter/Psionicist
Alasdair / Male Human / Paladin/Psionicist
Conall / Male Human / Paladin
Tomiki / Human Male / Samurai/Ronin
If you wish to rest longer then 8 hours then after those first 8 anybody in the party can stand guard, but the spell casters from Bard to Mage must have 8 straight hours.
As Paladin’s are granted the ability to cast spells at higher LvLs like Rangers they do not need those 8 hours, at least not in this game. However every DM is different so don’t consider the above rule 100% official.
