My 2 Cents........
Well the GM can work things however they feel best for their story.
But as I read the information on an amulet they don't have alignment, the Psyche (soul) of the character has the alignment. If the character isn't healed before an curtain amount of time then the Psyche (soul) in the amulet returns to it's plain of alignment (possibly to be resurrected) and the amulet just losses its magic. If the amulet is destroyed while the soul is in it the the soul is destroyed.
Amulet of Life Protection: This pendant or brooch device serves as protection for the psyche. The
wearer is protected from the magic jar spell or any similar mental attack that would usurp control of the
wearer's body. If the wearer is slain, the psyche enters the amulet and is protected for seven full days.
Thereafter, it departs to the plane of its alignment. If the amulet is destroyed during the seven days, the
psyche is utterly and irrevocably annihilated.

Does it matter?
if the psyche has a clear alignment, would that still be detectable? I would think so, but I'm just a big warrior.

You said it
As long as you keep adding "without killing the party" to your sentences I can live with it. Or, at least, Lothor apparently can.

We need a plan
Alright guys, I'm bumping this back to the top. We need a plan. I'm thinking detect alignment. Maybe?
Also, what exactly do we need to do to activate the amulet?
Other ideas?

Ask Ulthok
He has one also, though not as old.

Ok..let's put 2 and 2 together.
We have a new person joining the game.
We find a new person frozen to the wall.
How does the new person bring a new character into the game???

Something new, something old
I was never sure if Roan wasn't just walking along with us. Tann never actually said he left, he just went silent. Other thoughts on the iceman being Roan:
1. Didn't Tann post about iceman before we knew there would be a new Roan?
2. Wouldn't we recognize Roan? Tann's last post showed us the new guy unmelted, so we should know what he looks like.
3. Is the new Roan really a completely new character or just the old one with a new player (and slightly modified personality?)
So, Tann - do we recognize the iceman? What does he(?) look like?
Ody - How does the amulate work?
All - do we activate the amulet? I'm thinking so, but I'd also like to do some sort of check alignment if possible.

Not Roan..............
The Iceman is not Roan. Roan has been with us, just as a NPC.
Grumpy will take over as a PC.
As for the Amulet,it doesn't need activated, it is active.
It is holding the ranger's psyche so the ranger's body just needs healed for the psyche to return.

?
Question for the GM:
I am assuming Cor would know this information, I am just not clear. Would it require only regular healing to bring the individual back due to the amulet? Seems it would not require a raise dead as he did not actually die.

A description of the iceman
The frozen body is, at a glance, easily identifiable as an elf; tall, lean muscled, and graceful looking. Should they be open(ed), the golden honey color of his almond-shaped eyes, too, is almost as readily identifiable an Elf trait as are the points of his ears. His hair, colored various shades of brown much like the floor of his native forests, is worn long but pulled back and secured by a smattering of thin braids so as not to interfere with his vision. The intricate, leaf, vine, and arrow tool-work of his well-worn leathers do nothing to obscure his heritage, either; nor do the bow and well-stocked quiver of arrows he carries. The machetes, though, to most folk of any species that have so much as heard tales of the Elf, the machetes that the elf carries are, indeed, a curious choice of weapon.

@Cor
Best solution would be a full Heal spell that would of course get him up to full health, but any cure wounds spell will retrieve his life essence from the Amulet.

Thanks. Looks like Rayne will have to do the honors as she has the Heal spells.

Valene has one also. I had Ulthok mention her so as to give Kiki something to write about, if she wanted.

Nice intro for the Ranger. That was quite the story. I have never heard of such a beholder. Am I right in thinking that the comment at the beginning about the war being over implies that this happened very recently since the big war of this era just ended? Or does it reference a different war? If it is the same war that means this was extremely recent and we can expect to meet a beholder very soon. (Upon review, "Dark King" doesn't seem quite right.)
Also, those tentacles - what did that poem say about making you forget about the world?
Finally, does the ranger have any kind of map of this place based on his previous explorations? or memory?

Good question...
...I'd like to think that Talca would have some sort of rough map... or at least a fairly vivid mental one of the Cyclops tower... however, I'm also given to understand that he's been frozen here for quite some time so just how applicable/reliable such a map would be is perhaps questionable. I defer to the DM on that.
Edit: Good call on taking the weapons, too. Talca's likely to be a tad freaked out when he comes to.
