weeked fun

Last weekend, we had a lot of fun at my house. You can't hear my voice, so please, use an imaginary [SARCASM] tag on my text.

Friday evening, my daughter's boyfiend was over. My oldest son had one of his friends over. For the record, my daughter is 15 (turns 16 in a couple of weeks), son is 14.

My wife and I left the two little boys (ages 2 and 4) with them while we took theh baby with us on a walk around the block.

We had been gone five minutes when the phone rang. My daughter was upset; the four year old didn't want a taco, he wanted a hot dog. So fix him a hot doh, sheesh! Don't call us with stupid problems.

We get home a half hour later to find my son reclining in a chair with an ice pack on his nose, and signs of bleeding apparent.

It turns out that the older boys decided to pick up the little boys' plastic swords and have a battle. Only my daughter's boyfried is a boxer ("you can't even SEE his hands!" my son later told me), and has very quick and strong wrists.

The boyfriend hit my son in the nose at a perfect angle. Understand, the weapon was a hollow, rounded sword. We thought that perhaps the nose was broken; it had bled profusely. No call for bleeding injuries, you might note.

My wife looked at it and declared that he would need stitches; the nostril was severed from the connection to his face. Sigh.

Of course, after hours clinincs were closed, so I was prepping to take him to the ER, when he started complaining that he couldn't see well... then, that he could not see at all.

His skin went deathly grey, his lips went blue, his pupils got large and become completely unresponsive to light. His speech dropped to a sluggish whisper.

Terrified, we called 911. My wife (a former ICU nurse) feared brain trauma.

He did pink up, and the vision came back slowly. Pupils started to react again. He was covered in sweat - clearly a nice case of shock.

Fire department arrived 20 minutes later, ambulance 28 minutes later. We decided to err on the side of caution and use the ambulance, in case he stopped breathing.

No head issue, just shock; he got five stitches in his nose and was cleared to play baseball the next day. We got home at 1:15 AM.

Fun weekend.

Fun indeed!

Glad all is well, despite the initial "panic" and such!

yeah

Kids are hard to really break.

It was a silly freak accident... but the boy has a serious karmic debt in terms of stitches. This is the kid that could not understand why I was so against him shooting a bow while riding down a hill in a wagon.

yep

Sadly, yes. He tried this.

Another gem? He and his buddy decided to copy the bit off of the movie "Grown Ups" - where they shoot an straight up into the air, then see who is brave enough to stay in the original spot the longest.

We had to talk about bow & arrow safety.

wow

Have you ever seen 'We need to talk about Kevin'? You'll never hear the word bow and arrow in the same way. I always have to think of that movie. Horrifying.

and people wonder why I make faces when they ask if I plan on having kids...

Maybe he'll get a rakish scar?
