Subject: Diplomacy; A Useful Option

There was a look of abject misery on his countenance as he glanced up to the gaily coloured streamers of sunlight that rained serenely down on their heads. Gloom hung over his persona like a pall; he tramped listlessly after the Mercenary, his boots sending up soft puffs of dust in his wake. He looked over to his comrade, an apathetic and almost pitying expression in his eyes. He could have quite cheerfully killed him. It must have been a coincidence, he surmised after goggling at him for a moment, that in times of intense stress, people communicated only by stating the very obvious. He had no idea what that was supposed to accomplish, and perhaps it was not meant to accomplish anything. It was simply a way of continuing contact, of extending some slight form of comfort.

He nodded faintly, his lips tightening into a grim line. A flash of worry transformed his stolid features for a second and with another, dismissive gesture; he turned on his heel and padded towards the main webbing of the streets where he promptly lost himself. It was labyrinthine, this city, and oddly unfamiliar, the streets a confusing tangle of dead ends and cross-ways, each of these looking suspiciously alike. Growling obscenities beneath his breath he traced through the main artery of the city, exhaustion beginning to hamper his progress.

It was only by a spot of luck that he managed to find her.

He had collapsed wearily against the side of a building for a moment of relaxation when the sounds of complete chaos reached his ears from a nearby street. He leapt to his feet in surprise and took off like a shot towards the source of the din, his long strides carrying him forward with terrific speed.

He had barely had time to register the presence of Evani.

Side-stepping away from immediate harm, he instinctively employed his fertile mind, carefully evaluating the situation. One harmless old man and a number of potential aggressors. There were three of them; he observed at a glance, wiry, nervous types no doubt accustomed to the assault of the ancient, the young and the weak. Fine, none of his concern at the moment. He moved cautiously around them, not hindering or helping their getaway until he had reached Evani`s side. “You gave us a bit of a fright”, he murmured, finally turning his head to regard her. He smiled disarmingly at her, masterfully concealing his concern.

A sudden noise effectively brought his attention back to the three scoundrels as a strange creature seemly appeared out of nowhere and leapt upon the vagabonds. The pirate lord watched, taken aback. He had never seen this creature before, and hadn’t the foggiest idea what it was. It was a person, of that he was sure, and although small, was almost certainly dangerous. He only wielded a broomstick, and cut a comical figure, but the fire in his eyes and the strength that thickened his neck and shoulders demanded that he be taken seriously. However, he was outnumbered and sensing an unpleasant encounter, Septimus stepped forward and grabbed the peculiar little fellow by the collar of his shirt. The pirate unconsciously grimaced at the filth that clung to the dwarf but managed to gently tug him out of harm’s way.

Keeping one eye on the criminals, he ducked his head closely to the dwarf’s level. “I admire your bravery, warrior, but tis not your day to die. However, cully, if you are absolutely determined to go down fighting”, he whispered, slipping effortlessly into corsair slang, “I suggest you get yourself a proper weapon”. He drew his pistol and angled the handle towards the dwarf. “Might as well spook them off. And by the way, no worries about borrowing it, mate”, he muttered, his eyes flickering up to the dwarf’s, cold as a lion’s.

He nodded towards the criminals and grinned.

“It will get returned to me…sooner or later”.

He had risen instantly to his feet without a trace of a sailor’s swagger, but it had not been enough. In the space of the second his handsome features twisted into a mask of hatred and he dived like a frightened otter, pressing his lithe body closely to the floor. The crossbow bolt meant for him swerved as if undecided and buried itself into foreign flesh.

A cry.

He pitched himself forward and ran.

Two Blue Coats sighted him and tore themselves from the thick of the fighting. They flanked the pirate lord, their scimitars smiling wryly in the mid-afternoon light that filtered still through the half-open door. He swerved with frightening alacrity as one of them lunged forward with outstretched blade, leading them on carelessly, even lightheartedly. It was a bone-chilling game that he played with those men. He would slow for a moment, thin chest heaving with exhaustion, and they would leap forward to impale the vulnerable flesh inches from the tips of their blades only to hear the unrequited hiss of struck air. He had feinted at them, and then he would be gone again, batting at them with his own weapon or gracefully evading the scything edge with a slight duck of the head. He seemed to have defied the laws of physics and it drove them mad.

Septimus made a mad dash for the open doorway, away from the oncoming throng of new opponents. He zigzagged in a lunatic pattern, jerking away from an ill-timed cutlass swipe, just missing a crossbow bolt that embedded itself harmlessly into a now-empty table, his eyes and aye, his entire existence focused on the single square of light that now signaled escape.

He threw himself at it.

Hard cobblestones greeted his efforts and knocked the air out of him as he landed, shaken but relatively unharmed. Movement greeted him. He grabbed his weapon and scrambled up, his body shaking from spent adrenaline, complexion bluish white with shock. Turning to face his companions was Death himself with raised blade. His eyes were wild and he snarled savagely at them before a tint of recognition flowered in his gaze and destroyed his need to kill. His shoulders slumped slightly as the fight went out of him, sensing the enormity of what he had almost done. He managed a slight, rather apologetic smile, attempting desperately to restore some semblance of normality. But alas, that was impossible, he was a pirate lord and strange blood ran in his veins.

They would never be safe with him.

Subject: An Exercise in Patience

A disappointed expression flickered across his countenance before he happened to catch it and stow it away.

He had rather thought that he was being inconspicuous.

He watched with a sort of distanced and half-guilty pride as the paper was ripped from its privileged position and floated sadly to the ground. He stared at it, almost expecting something marvellously dangerous to occur.

Nothing did.

The pirate lord tilted his head in acknowledgement, ignoring the faintly ominous tones that had risen in the voice of the old master.

THEY were looking for him.

Nothing in that statement that was not previously established. Ah. But who were THEY? He pondered over the pronoun for a moment, wrapping his long elegant fingers securely about the goblet. It seemed the perfect paranoid fantasy. Not they but THEY. But which THEY? The lanky officers, scarcely out of boyhood, all knobby knees and half-meant malevolence? The hunters in their cloaks that always smelt vaguely of cashews and day old bread? The riders with their hard-ridden horses that spat out bloody foam? Poor adversaries all. He smiled without meaning. The end was coming, oh yes, of that he was certain. 'But how would it come', he thought idly. 'Which THEY? And would there be dogs?'

He gazed into his drink despondently for a moment, and ignoring the sickly sheen that skipped across the surface of the liquid, he threw his head back and took a gigantic swallow of it.

It was beautifully disgusting.

“Kind of you”, he managed faintly, and felt an enormous relief that he would not be called upon to make conversation. Her voice cut through his nebulous conscience and he grunted once in agreement. It was probably a very foolish idea for him to have brought them here, but he had always had a weakness for the nostalgic.

He turned his head slightly, sensing the eyes of the mercenary boring into the skulls of the patrons. He shifted uncomfortably. The man was dangerous, he had quite understood that, and almost certainly mad. Not only mad, but he had that peculiar talent that some poets possess, the talent to make his madness seem terrifyingly logical. There seemed to be a sort of electricity in him, a sort of hypnotic intensity that the rogue found himself envying. It shot out of his eyes like firecrackers. There was arithmetic in his fingers. Although their friendship was assured, Septimus always felt a bit jumpy in his skin about him.

He was continuing to stare glumly into his drink when a certain name caught his attention. He hung on to that single letter, a bubbling excitement banishing his apathetic gloom. He was about to reply when Evani brazenly stepped in front of him, a seductive smile spreading across her lips, for once a smile not meant for him. He paused, a neutral expression upon his visage that was rapidly deteriorating towards murderous. He bristled and shot a glance towards the mercenary. It was only in meeting his old comrade’s calm eyes that he realiased exactly what she was doing. Because of this, he tolerated it grudgingly. If it would get information out of him...

Now that his temper had been reigned in, he fought to keep in an enormous bout of laughter. There was something dreadfully obvious and humourous about the entire situation. He choked back the furious tittering tried to rise in his throat and as a result acquired a gargantuan headache. He had almost given the game away, although one would not have known it by looking at him. It was nerves, he thought, looking properly furious again. Of course it was. Everything that had happened so far made about as much sense as a fish in a privet bush, and as he gazed into the swirling madness of his inferior quality ale he found himself considering the barkeep. ‘No one is going to fall for that act’, he thought, ‘unless the person in question was a blithering idiot’.

He hoped to God that was what he was.

Will occur Sunday.

I am very sorry for the delay, and my other game is quite annoyed at me for it, but I really should be learning my lines as I need to get up very early in the morning to go to location.

Just got my lines a day before and there is a hellishly short amount of time until filming. As in, no time at all.

Forgive me. I shall create a long post to compensate.

Wish me luck on the film!

Subject: Gen Menbren: A Harmless Eccentric

Name: Gen Archais Menbren

Status: Unknown

Race: Human

Languages Spoken: Common and Elven

Age: Twenty-Five

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Class: Ranger

Armour: Light

Weapon proficiencies: Rapier, bow and arrow

Religion: Kith-jora

Height: 5’9

Weight: 147 lbs

Hair: Dark Brown

Eyes: Dark Brown

Place of Birth: Pardinal

Group Affiliation: None

Coat of Arms: A falcon diving in attack

Physical Description:

Gen is, by most respects, a handsome man. He has dark, golden-tinged eyes, full lips and smooth cafe au lait skin. His features reflect his exotic heritage. He is a bit of a Gypsy. He has long dark hair with golden highlights, a straight, noble nose and a baby face. He is often seen sporting a closely clipped mustache and goatee. Once the ugly duckling of the family and bit of a runt, he has redeemed himself. He is slender of build and not particularly tall, reaching about 5'9.

His appearance is impeccable and stylish but still with a slightly devil-may-care air. He prefers wearing ankle-length plain robes but can be seen in travelling/warrior attire occasionally. A leather cuff embellishes his right wrist and red beads are on his left wrist. He is thin and exotic looking, soft-eyed and quiet of nature.A thin scar over his right eyebrow marks where he got into his first battle with his brother Bennie. He has a small tattoo over his heart of a phoenix, his proverbial guardian.

Personality:

Although the Menbren family in Pardinal are often seen as scheming and self-serving, Gen is a kind person, but has his rougish moments. He is sensitive and has a very close association with nature. He is optimistic and is the sort of man who can run between the raindrops, keeping different parties happy. He is a wanderer at heart, a roamer. He is gregarious but quiet, in his own world at one moment, in the midst of a party at the next. He has low self-esteem and can be quite needy at times, but he is fiercly loyal to his friends and his lovers. He is often shy and in spite of his wealth, is not arrogant. He is to be fair, not an eccentric; rather he is an individualist, which is something quite different all together. He is simply more lively then others, an unpopular electric eel set in a pond of goldfish.

He is very intelligent and soft-spoken, and possesses an increditably vivid imagination. He is easygoing, becoming enraged only if his culture is spoken poorly of. However, he does tend to get muddled up a bit in his words, mostly from the fact that he is not used to speaking to anyone. He possesses a strong dislike for liars and is very honest and chilvrous.

He is charming , provided he can be coaxed to talk, but not manipulative and seems absolutely obvilous to his good looks. He can be childlike at times, possesing a wonderous view of the world and tends to live each day as his last. He is a bit of an odd dreamer, and is more than often in his own little world. His unhappy childhood as the unwanted child has not made him bitter. Instead it caused him to be especially perceptive to other`s feelings. He strives to be kind and understanding to others, perhaps remembering his past as the outcast.

History:

Gen Menbren the Second was born into the royal family of Menbren. Gen was an unwanted child, born to a family that had already received their heir, his older and slightly homicidal brother Bennie Menbren. Gen was born a perplexing creature, the runt of the litter, and throughout his entire childhood he was all but ignored.

While his parents worried and fussed over his older brother, Gen was urged to entertain himself and he did so by employing his vivid imigination, fasinating himself for hours on end with places he had never been to,and people he had never met. While his brother caused havoc, Gen quietly stayed out of the way.

When he spoke at all he was a source of puzzlement to family and company. When Bennie was asked of his life ambition,he dutifully replied that he wished to serve the kingdom. Gen, when asked replied to the smiling and bewildered faces of his mother`s guests that truthfully, he would much rather be a hedgehog.

He had an unhappy childhood despite being provided for. His mother died when he was quite young and his father, the king was exceedingly busy, leaving his young sons in the care of a less-then interested nanny. His older brother tormented him, often culminating in acts of abuse. His father King Julhoun the First currently rules Pardinal. Gen's brother, Bennie, claiming that Gen had been planning treason against the crowd, convinced their father to banish him. Gen was banished from the kingdom, and to cover up the young prince's banishment, Bennie spread a virulent rumour that Gen had abandoned his elderly father because of the king's intention to marry the young prince's childhood sweetheart.

Gen ran off as a teenager and hid out with the elves, who accepted him in spite of corrupt heritage, and grew attached to the soft-spoken young man. He learned the skills of the woods from them, and became a ranger, famed for his way with animals. King Julhoun, sixty and in ill health is in a precarious situation, with the malicious Benjamin set to rule.

The exiled prince waits for the time when he can regain his people.
