Subject: yea, i'm not dead... yet

Tram took a breath, then searched for any traps that might pose any danger. After that, he would open the door, picking the lock if need be. Once the door was open, his plan would be to head to the back of the group with his bow drawn. "Let's see what we're in for."

I know this has been already asked, but I'm asking again. Who all is still here?

"Unless there are any objections, I'll take point from now. Of course, if trouble does arise, I'll be in back. Looking for trouble is what I'm used to. Dealing with it is another story," Tram said as he drew his bow once more heading down the hallway, following it to the right. He stepped slowly and cautiously, keeping a watchful eye, and a keen ear for any trouble that might arise, be it foe, or traps. He tried to stay to the shadows and keep his footsteps as silent as possible.

"Let's be off then," he whispered. "Personally, I hope we find food more than a fight."

I've been checking in fairly regularly, but I wait for everyone to give their responses, or for you to tell me what the result was of my last post. I think other people are the same way, but who knows. I haven't been keeping up with who is the slow one.

"Wait," Tram says putting his hand out to Siegfried. "Give me just a minute first. I can see in the dark, but there are many foes that can't. You're disadvantage might be theirs as well. I don't want to startle anything in here." He lowered his head, shaking it slowly. "It's too bad about Roy. I don't know what's with this world. The last person I hung out with got killed by a dragon. This one got killed by a tree branch. I've never seen anyone get killed by a tree branch before. That's pretty weird to think a tree has something in common with a dragon."

He pauses, thinking for a moment, then his head pops back up, "Aaaannyway. I'll sneak down to the corner, give a look, then head back. Of course all this might change if you hear the signal which will be, 'AAAAHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!'" (that part was whispered.)

Tram carefully sneaks down the hallway, looking for anymore traps, and listening for any sounds that might clue him in on what was around that corner up there. He plans to just look around then come back.

(Obviously, I'd love to take 10 or even 20 on these checks, but whatever is cool with you, I'll go with.)

"Thanks for getting that door, Siegfried," Tram says as he climbs into the hallway. He crouches down and takes a few breaths then looks down that hallway. "Can you see that? The hallway seems to take a turn about sixty feet down." Tram stands back up, draws his bow, and steps forward. "I don't like this, there's no torches. Look, I'm pretty good at spotting dangers other might miss, so if you want, I'll go first and take a look. By the way, so what happened to Roy? Are you sure he's dead?"

Subject: everything's cool, let's move on.

I think one of my misunderstandings was based off of "the inability to take extra on rolls." I didn't really know what that meant since I didn't think taking 10 was extra. Next time I'll ask if I don't understand something. As I said before, I was having a really bad time when I made that complaining post. I'll try not to have that happen again and if I get injured or die because of tricky choices or bad rolls, so be it. Let the dice fall where they may.

Subject: Sorry about the last post

I was having a really bad day. It wasn't all that bad. But for what it's worth. Here's what the SRD says:

"Taking 10
When your character is not being threatened or distracted, you may choose to take 10. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, calculate your result as if you had rolled a 10. For many routine tasks, taking 10 makes them automatically successful. Distractions or threats (such as combat) make it impossible for a character to take 10."

So it's not that I'm under stress. It's about that no one is attacking me and nothing else is distracting me. The only thing on my mind is the skill at hand. But regardless, you're the DM and thus God and the SRD is never worded well enough anyway so it can all be debated.

That and you said the elf "botched" his rolls. I just took that as he rolled a 1. An 8 or better is not great odds. It's only like 60%. But regardless let's move on.

Subject: Okay, that was just stupid

Dude, what the hell? Do you remember the "you guys are making this way too complicated, it's easy speech?" You know the first time I wrote in a take 10 on the balance check. It must have slipped my mind when I was retyping my post that I wouldn't have had to retype if the description was good enough. So your basically saying I failed the balance check and whatever check to grab the door handle because I forgot to put the take 10 on there. Well, from now on, unless I say otherwise I'm taking 10 on everything. "I" might forget to type something, but my character wouldn't forget something like that considering the type of character he is.

And I'm assuming you also "forgot" to apply my tumble check because you were so focused on killing me. All I needed was 8 or better for no damage at all. If something that stupid happens again you won't half to worry about killing me, I'll grab an arrow and shove it in my ear as hard as I can, and if that doesn't do the trick, I'll fall on it to finish the job. I'm not kidding. The only reason for this speech is because I had previously put a take 10 on a balance check and changed it because of your wording and then to add insult to injury you bragged about how easy the checks were and we were making things to complicated. Well, obviously not.

By the way, I changed my post (and thus reality), you can change yours too.

"Get that rope away from me!" The gnome says angrily as he grabs the rope and throws it back. "I'm going again, if I die then I deserve it." Tram climbs back up to the ledge, checks for traps, listens for danger, and opens the door.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It was an easy mistake. I'm just trying to watch out for assumptions since that's what got Riaharan into this mess in the first place. I'll just edit my post to get the same result from different actions.

"You don't remember anything?" Tram asks looking down to Riaharan. "Well, for one thing, I lent you 20 gold," he says with a smile. "But in any event, we need to move on before any more of us get injured. I'm going to try that door." Tram climbs back down into the hole, then back up to the ledge by the door. Once there, he plans to first listen to hear if there are any noises from the other side, then scan to see if the door has any more nasty traps on it. "I'd keep that rope handy just in case. Did you say Roy's dead? That would probably bother me if I knew him."

(I'm gonna take 10 on the climb checks, and 20 on the traps, and if time allows, 20 on the listen check.)

"Damn it!" Tram yells, "Are you okay, Riaharan?" No response. "Damn it! One hell of a day." He moves over to Valerick shortening the length of rope throwing his end in the pit leaving the other end with Valerick. "I certainly don't want to do this, but I'm the lightest. Don't let me down... or drop me down for that matter. I don't care if you have to tie the rope around yourself ten times and lie down on the ground clawing at the floor. Don't drop me. I'm going for Riaharan before he drowns down there." And with that said Tram gets a firm grip on the rope, then slowly and carefully lowers himself into the pit bracing the climb against the wall.

(I'll just take 10 on the check)

Subject: Making a tightrope

I'm still waiting to hear if my character would think this is a stupid idea. He's not stupid and he has used a rope plenty of times befoere. I'm sure he's dragged plenty of stuff with a rope, or held back a donkey with one, or something. He still won't do it, if it seems like a ridiculous idea. Also if anything did go wrong, he'd let go before he'd go in.

I'm saying all this because I know you're itching to kill us. And for the record, if it was my character who fell in the pit, he would have climbed up any of the other sides except for the one with a small edge. I'm just asking to keep that in mind if any other common sense things come up. I would hate to accidently exclude some simple detail I figured was obvious and then get killed for it.

Tram grabs his end of the rope and starts walking around the pit, at least five to ten feet from it's edge. He digs his feet into the ground and while gripping the rope, he digs one of his spiked gauntlets into the wall.

"I say we go for it... very slowly, with him gradually putting on weight, just to see if either one of us start sliding. I know I can hold his weight, but you never know. This is all of course assuming you don't have a better idea. In the meantime, "Hey Siegfried!!!" Looking back, "I'm still wondering why he threw the climbing gear to the short guy. Eh.. that's my life."

"Thanks, but where the hell are you going," Tram says as he quickly reaches for the rope. He looks over to Riaharan dangling off the doorknob, then down to the rope, then back to Riaharan, then over to Valerick with a half unsure smile.

He throws one end of the rope over to Valerick saying, "Alright, I got a wacky idea. I say we pull the rope taunt and both carefully walk around each edge of the pit," leaning his head forward, "obviously not standing on the edge, but at a safe distance. Then we walk towards the wall keeping the rope taunt so Riaharan can grab it. Maybe he can even open the door at the same time. How does that sound?"

(Considering I can "push or drag" 431 pounds, half of Riaharan's weight should be a cakewalk. Let me know if I'm wrong, because my character is NOT doing this action right now, mearly suggesting it.)

Well, the arrow was worth a shot. Not much I can do in the present situation. By the way, how many hit points did I get off that potion? Also, does it seem to dangerous for Riaharan to just drop back into the water and just tread water until the water rises so he could climb out.

"Okay, that didn't work," Tram sighed, holstering his bow. He looks back to the others. "Hey, we could use a little help over here!" he shouts over to the others. The sash around his waist could be used as a rope perhaps. He had used it before for that exact purpose, but only for about 5 feet. Still, it might be worth a shot. But he would wait. Even if he through the sash over, chances are he would be pulled in too considering his size.

"Hey, what was that noise?"

(If the door is steel, then this never happened.)

"Hold on Riaharan, and watch yourself," Tram says while drawing his bow. "I'm gonna give you something to grab on to, just don't put all your weight on it." He takes aim for as long as it takes for him to be confident with his shot, then shoots an arrow at the door, close enough for Riaharan to grab it, but far enough away so as not to take a chance hitting him.

(a stationary door should conceivably be an easy target)

I'm just wondering what I can and can't take 20 with. Legally, I supposed to be able to take 20 with a search check for example if my character "took enough time." And this applies to listen checks, disable device, etc. But every DM is different and every DM is god, so I just wanted to know where you stand.

Tram sighs, "First I wasn't mocking you Riaharan. You only said your name once and it's not exactly a common name. Second, that was pretty much the last of my first aid. And third, I'll see what I can do." He continues to scan the room, slowly and carefully stepping around the hole in the floor.

(Are there any other doors in this room?)
