Topic: Copywrite Police?
Subject: Sigh.....

I am relatively a newb here at the RDI but this is one of the age old discussions/battles of the internet so, in that sense, I feel I am a veteran and will chime in.

There are many arguments both for and against copyright "enforcement", but here in the US the constitution originally afforded a copyright "owner" (keep in mind this is the person getting PAID, not the person who necessarily created the copyrighted material) 28 years before it was released to the Public Domain, this was done to promote Science and the Arts (yes all of them, as it was intentionally left vague so that new science and technology would feed new arts that would feed new science that would feed new arts etc....). This was also done so that 1 person (or in our times, corporations) could not controll any bit of knowledge/art forever (this is done by using the language "for limited times" although some creative lobyists have come up with the limited term of "forever less one day" time frame seriously...)

Now most countries have copyright that extends for some period either after creation or after death of the creator(this case actually means the creator not the copyright "owner"), depending on the media (usually 25 - 120 years, and the 120 is in the US only) but one must consider who this actually benefits (and the outcome of that consideration is highly debated).

Just keep in mind, in the US the ORIGINAL use of copyright was LIMITED for the benefit of society as a whole.

Next there is the "stealing is wrong" moniker that alot of people use when denouncing "file sharing". In general, when most mention stealing, it implys that the "item" that is stolen is no longer in the "owners" possession.... you can see where this arguement goes also it is implied that when someone shares media (as in filesharing, or recording songs off the radio, or burn your TIVO rips to DVD and giving them to a friend) that they have stolen revenue (as in lost sales) from the company (that holds the copyright, not the company that necessarily created the content, this is VERY important to keep in mind) although this is impossible to prove.

The bottom line is, even if it is "stealing", Roleplayers, of all people, should know that it dosen't necessarily make the "theif" a bad person.

Subject: Tellanth - Sodgrove - Following the Cows

Tellanth blushes even brighter after being asked for advice ((the tattoo on his face is an extreme contrast)) and says,

"Well....," he says as he looks at the sky, " I do belive I am having the idea...," again with a grin and a blush.

"We could use the skills of your sneaky friend to scout ahead," he says as he points in the direction that he last saw Ixion, he looks kind of surprised to not see him there any more, "your very sneaky friend that is. Or maybe you," he says pointing at the elf ((Snowlily)), "you look incredibly at home in these woods. In any case, these strange kobolds, or whatever is leading them, were smart enough to set up a diversion, so in turn they are smart enough to know it would be easy to follow their tracks and set an appropriate ambush or trap."

"In about 25 minutes, the eclipse should end. If we can get advance notice of their positions, numbers, if there is a leader, we can take advantage of the kobolds natural sensitivity to light, even with it being overcast, the change should be significant enough to cause them some difficulties, and with any luck.... ambush the ambushers.....," he turns towards the dark skinned dwarf and continues, " with light and surprise, the charge into battle that you seem destined to make should be much more efficient.....did that make sense?" he says turning back to the group with the grin again but his face reddens once more has he waits for someone, anyone to say something....

Subject: Tellanth - Following the newly formed party

Tellanth, following along after examining the bodys, speaks up,

"If I might be making a suggestion?"

He pauses waiting for everyones attention ((except for Manuhol, We have not seen him yet right?))

"These creatures should not have been able to pull somethink like this off. They are either,

A. smarter than you average.... Kobold

or

B. being led or controlled by somethink

in either case we should use what your friend here ((pointing at Ixion)) suggested earlier in the Inn.... strategy. You all, obviously, have very many talents and useful abilities, we could pool our collective resources and lessen the danger to each of us in turn. I am Tellanth, and I am more than happy to help any of you in any way that I can."

Tellanth stands there, with a engraciating grin on his face, his face slowly getting red, waiting for anyone to say anything to him.... the longer he waits the more red his face becomes....

((he is pretty embarassed, not a good public speaker, but he does have the party's best interest at heart and doesn't want anyone to get unnecessarily hurt))

Running down the street towards the fighting, trying to get a view of what is going on. Tellanth can not help shooting the Drow some more inquisitive looks.

((Tellanth is a human male of about 5'11", he looks to be maybe 150lbs. or so, but it is difficult to tell because of the extremly baggy, silver-grey robes. He has a strange silver marking on his face that from a distance may appear to be a birthmark at first glance, but further and closer examinination would show it to be a tatoo of a Silver-Dragon kind of in profile, where its left eye is Tellanth's left eye, it continues up and into his hairline.))

Subject: Tellanth - Sodgrove - Outside the Burning Barn

Tellanth, seeing the dark looking elf exit the burning building, stops for a moment examining her as she passes off the obvious source of the previous screaming.....

A moment later, seeing the elf at the doorway, He yells,

" your friend, the one with the knife tricks, may be in need of your and the Dwarf's assistance. He went this way!"

Pointing down the street in the direction of the sound of the fighting.

At this point ((Once he was sure the elf understood)), He turns and runs down the street towards the fight trying to get a view of whats going on before he gets there.

As the human with the hidden knives ((Ixion)) runs towards the sounds of battle, Tellanth lets out a long sigh and begins muttering something unintelligible while holding his body in a very contorted shape ((2 rounds casting expeditious retreat and resistance)) Then, out of no where, he takes off at an incredible speed into the burning barn.

Seeing the fire down the street Tellanth moves outside following the rest of the of the patrons of the Inn. As he moves closer to the fire, He stops and asks any onlookers if they saw anything, what the building is ((house, store, whatever)), what is going on in general.

Hearing the commotion, Tellanth moves to a window to try to get a view of the street/area the scream came from.

Sodgrove - The Broken Tankard

As he is being shown to his room he inquires about a copper tub and the possibility of a laundry service. He takes a bath and a short but decadently comfortable nap in a bed.

After his nap he makes himself presentable in some clean robes and heads down stairs around noon - 1 and sits at a table orders some food and asks the staff about shopping opportunities that might be available in town. All the while studiously watching all the patrons in the inn, trying to get a handle on who people are and what their conversations are about.

Broken Tankard - Sodgrove

The door opens, and a human of about 5'11" walks through the door and brings with him an expansive plume of what appears to be dust emanating from his dirty gray baggy robes. He struggles getting his baggage through the door, and he fumbles around trying to keep hold of his books and, what appear to be scroll cases.

He drags himself over to an empty table to have a seat all the while shooting what he believes is a disarming grin to any that catch his gaze. As soon as he sees/hears the bards talking at the table across the room he begins intently staring at then, almost as if studying them....

His face has a strange silver marking that goes up into his hairline is difficult to make out from a distance... maybe a birth mark? His hair is jet bet with what appear to some silver gray streaks, which is kind of strange considering he appears to be no more that 25-30 years old. He speaks common with a pretty strange accent ((think heavy russian)) as he orders some breakfast and asks the waitress if there are any rooms available.

Topic: Hi all.
Subject: Hi all.

Just poping in to introduce myself. I am a friend of Shaithis' who convinced me to give this a shot.

I have TONS of PnP experience (started with original red box DnD when I was 9, I thought I was so cool cause the box said for ages 10+ ) about 21 years or so (oops, just dated myself didn't I ) but I have never tried a play by post system.

I am married (7 years) to another new member as well, Whitinator and we have 2 children (one 5 and the other is 1) and for that reason, I hear this is the system for me.

Anyways, just wanted to say hi and thanx to all the guys running and maintaining a site like this for RPers to use and play around on.
