Subject: Germyn

As David's arrows flew towards their mark, so to did the wolf creature launch itself in the guard's direction. First bounding past David, Germyn cast aroudn the cells to find an opening to get at this new opponent.

A quick examination of the area told Aldagen all he needed to know. That the children had been here was without doubt. Marks of their presence were everywhere. The rangers eyes followed the tracks in their path, and just as his gaze fell upon the old well, Ehllar gave a loud, piercing shriek. Running over to the old stone structure, the Syl looked down, straight into the terrified eyes of the small girl hanging on for dear life.

"She's over here! Help!" Aldagen reached down and grabbed the girls arm, trying his best to hoist her up.

Subject: Germyn

Germyn thought about what his newfound ally had said. Somehow it seemed... wrong. To simply leave a man to wallow in prison, just as they had until so very recently... But then David mentioned a guard. Lips curling back in a vicious snarl, the deep growl returned to the rangers throat.

The thought of revenge drove all else out. Germyn would have his freedom, and he would have delicious revenge. Falling to his knees, Germyn's breathing became thick and hard, beginning to sound like a dog's panting. Focusing, the ranger bent his will towards his body, forcing it to undergo the change that would give him the power to kill his captors.

Balaar allowed himself a small smile. The infantile behavior of his new "partner"amused him to no end. In the same way that a baby would amuse a dragon before the beast decided to eat it. Taking up his staff, the half-orc began to follow.

Subject: Aldagen

After poking around for a bit in the wizards tower, Aldagen quickly found himself with the desire to get out. He hated small, clustered areas like the old lab, and the ancient texts and alcohol-preserved specimens held no interest for the ranger.

Walking out into the morning sunshine, Aldagen gave a small contented sigh. Hard work, clear goals... life was good. The smile slid a bit from his lips as he though about their adversaries. He held no love for dragons, and though the lizard-men weren't true drakes, they had the blood in them.

Conseling himself, he tried to not take any delight in the thought of his arrows burying themselves into thick draconic scales. He was a ranger, and faithful follower of Vilathera, so the line between the hunt and slaughter must be kept.

Looking up into the skies, he gave a loud whistle and waited. Soon a proud avian form swept down from the clouds. Grinning again, Aldagen held out his arm and allowed Ehllar, his Eagle companion to settle there. The eagle held it's breakfast, a large rat in it's beak, and paused to consider Aldagen for a moment with it's intense glare. Finally it hopped off the syl's arm and fluttered down to the ground, where it began to tear into the rat.

Aldagen decided to take a few more moments of sun before going in to see what his companions were up too.

Well, I've caught up on the old posts in the topic. I'm definitely excited about getting going. My characters submitted for review.

So, I'm curious. Who's actually still active in the story? This is the second change of cast, isn't it?

{{OOC: Well, I suppose I'm jumping in. Talk to Almerin for character info. It may already be in the Q&A Thread...}}

Aldagen let out a tired breath and stuck his shovel firmly into the ground. Grunting slightly he chuckled to himself at his allies singing and camaraderie. As he pulled up a spadeful of dirt, he heard Isi speak out.

As soon as they were inside the ancient building, the ranger let out a low appreciative whistle. "Sure looks old. Gotta be something of value around." Aldagen briefly considered the chest covered in arcane marks, and then reconsidered. Wizards and their magic were mysteries that could remain mysterious thank you. Surely far above Aldagen's simple head. Walking idly around the room, the ranger began to look around for any thing that might have slipped their attention.

Subject: Germyn

Germyn finished inspecting the contents of the barrel and came up with another short sword and a pair of bracers. Quickly and effectively he strapped on his gear, and paused for a moment, re-accustoming himself to their weight. When the voice of another prisoner came to his ears, the ranger perked up and tried to smell the air for this new comer.

But the voice was out of range. Looking to his new apparent allies, Germyn spoke. "Do we help him?"

His voice returning somewhat, Germyn continued. "I was a ranger... killed some cult of Nerull... I was sent here... Cursed to live for centuries... I've lost track of time..." Hesitantly, he sheathed his sword. Holding it at one side for several seconds, he stared uncomfortably at the woman before him.

Finally, with no fore-warning, the ranger ducked down and continued his frenzied search of the barrel before him. A small yelp of excitement was heard as he re-emerged with an ordinary looking belt. Apparently having totally forgotten about the other two people in front of him, he sighed in contentment, and put the belt on deftly, and attached his sword to it. Germyn then proceeded to open the small pouch on the belts front, and rummaged through it, making small grunts as he went, apparently assessing it's contents.

Subject: You sure?

No, I remember UMD checks being really big for even basic stuff. But you'll want to double check me on that. But yes, a feat to automatically take ten would only be useful at levels 1-2 or so. Or if you want to use a skill, but not have to point points into it. And that would be silly.

Topic: Warlock Decieve Item Question
Subject: Omgz? I guess

In order to beat something with DC check above twenty... I dunno. I think you can take a 20 on that. I forget the difference between taking 10 & 20... I had understood that Warlocks can use wands and scrolls like wizards and sorcerers, without a UMD check. Mebbie not. I dunno.

Edit:
Taking 10
When your character is not being threatened or distracted, you may choose to take 10. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, calculate your result as if you had rolled a 10. For many routine tasks, taking 10 makes them automatically successful. Distractions or threats (such as combat) make it impossible for a character to take 10. In most cases, taking 10 is purely a safety measure —you know (or expect) that an average roll will succeed but fear that a poor roll might fail, so you elect to settle for the average roll (a 10). Taking 10 is especially useful in situations where a particularly high roll wouldn’t help.

Taking 20
When you have plenty of time (generally 2 minutes for a skill that can normally be checked in 1 round, one full-round action, or one standard action), you are faced with no threats or distractions, and the skill being attempted carries no penalties for failure, you can take 20. In other words, eventually you will get a 20 on 1d20 if you roll enough times. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, just calculate your result as if you had rolled a 20.
Taking 20 means you are trying until you get it right, and it assumes that you fail many times before succeeding. Taking 20 takes twenty times as long as making a single check would take.

(From the Hypertext d20 site)

So taking a 10 on a check would only be useful if you had less than 10 in that skill.

Balaar looked over the plans carefully, taking in what limited detail was present and branding it firmly to his memory. "Taking the map with us cannot hurt." He had to try hard to conceal his disgust and contempt of this albino freak. Sadists were rarely the type who could be trusted, or relied upon to do anything but glut their insatiable desire to hurt others. Just so long as the fool didn't try and hurt Balaar, he just may live through this job.

Turning to Aaron, Balaar smiled a toothy, sickly smile. "My dear sir. I wonder if you happen to have any corpses on hand? Preferably with some modicum of freshness left over?"

Germyn slowly lowered his sword. The growl subsided slowly, eventually stopping completely as he pushed himself up shakily on legs that had barely been used for nearly a century. He opened his mouth and let out a hesitant cough. Vocal chords, rough from disuse, croaked out in a loud whisper:

"My name... is Germyn... I have been prisoner..." At this, he had to stop, and he massaged his throat gently, trying to make it work properly again.

Germyn paused his furious inspection of the nearby crate and sniffed tentatively at the air. Without looking up, he took one more deep noseful. His hand was resting on the first discovery he had made, one of his two swords that he had carried in the material realm. As he allowed the new scent to fully register, a deep growl built up in his throat.

Leaping back suddenly, he drew the sword, crouching in a readied stance, the blade held level and steady in his grip. The growl became louder and more feral, a bestial quality now sounding in it.

His eyes swept over the two newcomers, his eyes glinting eerily and nostrils flaring in an attempt to identify them. One was a human with some elf in him and the other... her scent threw Germyn off. He couldn't quite place it, though she looked more or less humaniod.

He stood there, crouched, and waited, the growl sinking down in volume and becoming a nearly silent rumble. He waited, trying to see if these two creatres were inmates, like him, or his jailers, ready to be punished for their crimes against him.

Balaar watched as Banyan left the room. Turning to Aaron, the half-orc said "Well. Planning then. We'll need to see the drawings of the fortifications and the like. As for the children, leave them to me. I find that... persuasion can often work better than force."

Looking at his two allies, he asked "So gentlemen. What are your particular... skills?"

The shaman cast a look at the scrawny man in the studded leather out of the corner of his eye. Turning to fully appraise his ally for the first time, he said:

"I am Balaar M'rock. I am a mystic, and that is all you need to know." Taking up a staff, intricately decorated with small bones and feathers, that had been leaning against the wall, the half-orc continued. "And yourself? What's your story pale-man?"

I totally forgot that I have a conference thing this weekend. I'll be leaving Friday afternoon and coming back Sunday. I'll try and get in a post over the weekend, but no promises. Ummm... other than that, just get started without me, and I'll jump in as soon as I possibly can.

Sorry about that.

The half-orc in the corner offered a brief snort at the morbid musings of his apparent partner. Such sadism was worthless, a metaphorical measurement of your manhood against the world. If the job was torture, then torture he would, and bring pain unknowable to the miserable brats, no qualms about it. But the mystery albino had a point. A simple kidnapping... really, the half-orc thought, far below his particular skill level.

Raising himself up from one of the many shadows in the small room he leveled his eyes at his new employer. "I'll agree with the mystery man over there. The job does seem a bit simple. But I must say, we seem a bit... stretched. Is it to be two against a fortress? I am no stranger to stealth, but I might appreciate a large ally. Preferably one who will stand before me in a fight, and is handy with a sword." His eyes drifted idly towards the package on the table, and one could fairly hear the gold clinking inside his head.
