... for looking after your family. This is a good and responsible choice, and one that I expect you will be glad you made. Having known you for 30+ years now, I can honestly say that you are one of the best and most ethical people I've ever met. You do not take any significant decision lightly, and this is a very significant decision. It is one that I believe everyone here will respect.

Bye for now.

Subject: Pretty varied

I am fond of many types of music, ranging from rock through to early jazz and blues (particularly acoustic blues), baroque, and classical. My favourite genre, however, is progressive rock, both the classic stuff from the golden period (1969-79) and a lot of more recent stuff. My favourite bands include IQ, Rush, Yes, Marillion, Arena, Touchstone, and Sky Architect. I'm also a life-long Who fan. Another genre that I've gotten into recently is progressive metal. Ayreon is a particular favourite there.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts and interests.

... it is wise to take Sylvari seriously. Accordingly, Bjarki steps up to within a few paces of Crow, his ears sharp and his mouth shut. With one hand on the haft of his axe, he squints into the trees in the direction of the tracks. No point trying to out-track the trackers, so he waits--hopefully not for long--to see what will happen. His preference is to be close to the front--to bear the brunt of whatever may come at them--and in other terrain he would just take point. But here, he knows the group's interest would not be served this way. Still, he is sticking close enough to cover whoever might need covering. He has a hunch that someone will, and probably soon.

Subject: Back-post: Well, the guy’s got rhythm …

... Bjarki thinks as the Khord priest finishes his dance and resumes his seat. Sipping his drink quietly for a moment, he does his best to think about everything that’s just been said and done. Bjarki is not a fast thinker; he knows this about himself. So he’s gotten used to spending a fair bit of time at it:

On’t ane hand, he thinks, it luiks like we’ll be huntin’ cruniak in’t mornnin’. Nae surprise there, an’ aw for’t guid, aye, but we ma’na get though this wi’out trouble. Yon priestie fella’s fixin’ tae turn this intae a wee little holy war. On t’aether hand, we’ve some as seem tae have their eyes on’t coin. As for meself, I’d nae be eager tae tak’ this on wi’out a wee bit o’ gold at the end o’ the road, an’ what’s on offer here is a guid bit more than a pittance. Still, the cruniak are a threat. We’d aw agree on that. An’ long as neither gods nor gold come between us in’t midst o’ a scrap, their reasons are their ain affair.

Looking up then, he speaks first to the priest:

“Aye, that it should.”

Turning his attention to his other companions, he adds:

“But there’s nae harm in getting’ paid, neither. Not when’t job itself is worth doin’. Sae what say tae callin’ it a night. An’ if our friend Crow can pry himself away from yon red-haired wench, we can have our faces outbound in’t morning?”

Topic: Breaking the Fourth ~ A D&D Webcomic
Subject: A couple of ways to look at it

On the one hand, you may be right: just rub them on, and the magic works. Makes intuitive sense, and I think I've played some campaigns in which we used that approach.

On the other hand, we might assume that magic, like medicine, works specific ways in reaction to specific substances under specific conditions, an interpretation that makes sense given the necessity of material components among other details for most spells. In that case, we might assume that the conditions on the outside of the body are not sufficient to activate the magic in the potion, while the conditions inside the body are. This allows for a meaningful distinction between a healing potion and a healing salve, and it then matters whether the recipient is physically able to swallow.

We might also question whether the magic in question targets the wound itself (in which case drinking should not be required) or augments the body's innate ability to heal itself (in which case ingestion is probably a good idea).

Good question, and I enjoyed thinking about it. Thanks.

Topic: Are you ready for 5e? Do you care?
Subject: I started with the Basic rules ...

... and bought the 1e manuals as soon as I could get my hands on them. They served well for many years, especially after Unearthed Acrcana was released in the mid-80s. I'll admit that i had some skepticism when 2e first came out, but the transition from one to the other was not that tough , and the two systems are pretty compatible in any case. When the game was completely re-vamped for 3e, I completely lost interest as I saw it at the time as nothing more than a money-grab. The pubisher already had my money, and I already had a system that worked to my satisfaction.

This is not to downplay the validity of the profit motive: most of us depend upon it to a pretty large degree, whether recognized or unrecognized, and companies are certainly entitled to put out as many products as they believe the market will support.

That said, if 5e turned out to be back-compatible with 1e/2e, by which I pretty much mean if it were to ditch the d20 system in favour of the original format, I would at least be interested in checking it out in the hopes that it might enhance an already satisfying gaming experience without requiring a bottom-up revision. Though I could be wrong, I would not be surprised if a lot of other old-school gamers saw things this way.

… Bjarki drains the mug and sets it down with unaccustomed precision. Looking up then at his Syl companion, he responds:

“Nae jestin’ here, my friend. If waitin’ till mid-mornin’ mak’s the best sense for our ain purposes, then aye, I say let’s wait. But that's between us an' the cruniak. As for bankin’ on the blood o’ others tae pave our way tae the gold, I’m no’ sae easy wi’ that. They get there first an’ meet wi’ ill fortune, well, that’s their bad luck. But if we knowin’ly work their deaths intae our profit, that’s anaehter matter, and ane that may mak’ the gold all the heavier, tae my mind at least. Still, you’re right about this: there’s nae sense rushin’ out this time o’ day an any cas’, and nae sense rushin’ out any time wi’out a good plan. Sae what say we all bang our heads taegether an’ see what comes out on the table?”

Bjarki takes looks at the table. More money would be good, of course. Money itself is good: no civilization worthy of the name can function without it. But ...

He looks up and addresses the group.

"If our friend Wan is right, we may not have time tae be askin' for higher pay. Much as I love a good bit o coin' in me pouch, I don't want it drippin' in the blood o' innocent folk. As for lettin' the local toughs soften the cruniak up, well ... It mak's sense frae a certain point o' view, but I'm nae comfortable wi' usin' livin' people as bait. Not when I have no grudge agaisnt 'em. It may be best tae get movin' soon.

Any thoughts?"

Reluctantly setting his ale mug aside, then, he leans back to see what people say.

Bjarki downs the last of his tenth farewell pint, lamenting the fact that with this weak human brew, he is still able to keep count. Setting the empty mug down on the scarred wood of the table, he smiles a slow smile and responds to his fellow Khord:

"Aye, brother. It would be a shame tae gang our sep'rate ways now that we're all just gettin' cozy wi' each other."

Looking up at his other new-found friends, he goes on:

"This little warm-up we just finished would be an awful waste o' time if we didn't get in a real work-out after. And as for the cruniak, well, we only just met 'em a few days back. It'd be rude tae part company wi' 'em sae soon. They might get tae missin' us, an' then, well, I just wouldn't be able tae sleep wi' that hangin' o'er me heed."

Turning to the barmaid, then, he called out across the tavern:

"Could we get another round o' drinks here, deary? Mak' 'em dark as a daemon's soul and bitter as a widow's kiss. Looks like this party's just gettin' started."

Other than that, I'm good. Axe is sharp, helmet on more or less straight. That about covers it.

Subject: To be honest ...

... I've never been a big fan of designated leaders. And just to be clear, I'm one of the players Alacrity was referring to in his last post--the ones who tended to ditch the leadership idea pretty much immediately. My own experiences playing with group leaders is that the other characters are in danger of falling into subordinate roles, which are just not very satisfying to play.

I've found that leadership does tend to emerge spontaneously, though, and to shift according to the situation: a warrior will probably take the lead in a situation defined primarily by armed conflict while a mage or cleric will be more likely to lead when magic is called for. Characters' relationships, as they become accustomed to playing together, also tend to matter a great deal. Alignment is a factor as well. When I play chaotic good characters, it really doesn't matter who the leader is: if things head south, the character will act on his own initiative--in the party's interest but not necessarily according to plan.

I also need to be honest about one more thing: while I've been gaming for 30+ years, I'm new to the on-line thing, and realize that my table-top experience may not translate exactly.

Hello, by the way. This is my first post in this string. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

Subject: Haven't DMed in a while, but ...

I recall one adventure that absolutely flopped, and it was entirely my fault. I'd worked up a number of settings of which I was quite proud, and got so obsessed during the game, with making sure that the settings themselves were properly described, visualized, etc., that I completely blew the rhythm of play. A good session has an element of music to it, and my playing on that one was ham-fisted in the extreme.

Subject: Somelled

Well goodness gracious me, but I haven't thought about this in years. The first character I remember playing was named Somelled--a fighter in the Basic D&D system during the summer of 1981. He was the main character in a short story I'd written shortly before. His most outstanding characteristic was that he served as a door into the world of gaming and showed me that I was not merely what my social circumstances painted me to be. I suppose that is a common experience--the realization of the freedom to experiment with identities while simultaneously exploring shared worlds. Honestly, I'd almost forgotten the magic of that first session--a turning point that has since coloured many of the most important relationships in my life.

Thanks for the opportunity to revisit it.
