Cassandra smiles wanly at Thassal,
"Don't worry, horses don't come naturraly to me either-" She winces as the half-elf slides from his mount before helping him to his feet.
"I'm sure if we work together we can both end up mounted..." She smiles at you before reaching into a saddlebag and taking out a coil of rope. "When my father taught me to ride he tied me to my horse so that I couldn't fall, with no better options I think it would be safer for both of us if, until you get to grips with the process, I fasten you to your sadle."
----------------------------------------------------------
The stranger gives Takley as apprasing glance as he can with his single eye before settling down beside the fire.
"Have you ever wondered why the Avengers take to the rooftops at night?" Finishing his own meal the ebony man once again stands.
"As for my name, I am called Grendar when people aren't firing arrows at me...which isn't as infrequent as I'd like any more." Dousing the fire, the newcomer turns, staring once again at the sky. "I suggest that we answer your second question tonight...suffice to say that I am looking for the same thing that you are, only you don't actually know what you're really looking for yet." He flashes you a smile that is too wide to trust before striding off. "Meet me before the mansion as dusk falls, no later unless you want to put your life in luck's hands."

"Well, one thing's for certain, Tithuania will never run out of assassins, or at least men with the impetus or money to hire them." Karrain mutters as the makes off after the rest of the group, reviewing what had happened.

1. The Councillor for magic was gone.
2. The other Councillors were likley to follow him.
3. There were Smythians on the other side.
4. He really, really didn't like Smythians.
5. He was probably too old to be running around like this.

It was textbook, really, get rid of the command structure, leave the city authorities reeling, then take command. Tithuania was too big a city to be taken by force, yet not small enough to avoid the threat of political takeover.

Subject: Fatigue

Fighting battle after battle with little respite is a taxing thing, to represent this, when fighting battles in quick succession I will begin to assign attack control penalties as you tire, your blows becoming more irregular and your focus erratic.
Mages suffer from this as they can cast fewer spells and melee and ranged fighters as their blows are less accurate.

Posted on 2011-09-07 at 10:06:49.

Topic: Flux Wars Q&A
Subject: Spells

As the group has 2 mages this is also important.

During each battle you are able to imbue certain spells with paranormal effects or cast more catastrophic spells. The power of these will increase with your level.

At the moment you both know an array of spells and cantrips that your character is trained to use, however you can additionally use "Levelled Spells", basically Takra's Avalanche she just used is a good example of this.

"Leveled Spells" Scale as such:

At level 1 you can use 1 Levelled Spell per battle or one every first battle of two if you are 'fatigued' (see next post).
At level 2, 2 spells per battle and 1 when fatigued
At level 3, 3 spells per battle and 3 spells to share between every 2 battles when fatigued.
Level 4, 3 spells per battle, 2 spells every fatigued battle and one Climatic Incantation.

Climatic Incantations:
These are spells of truly awesome power and are dictated by the way you choose to shape your characters as they level up. For instance, if Crystal decides to pursue the option of Valsav Vanguard (doing the necessary training to change her attributes) her Climatic Incantation would be something along the lines of summoning a golem of ice around her.
I will assign Climatic Incantations as you level up, however these will probably be the only "written down" spells, the rest is up to your imaginations!

Subject: Revised Combat System

Okay, now that you're getting into your first real fight I'll go into more depth abour the combat system.

When attacking with a single target attack/spell you can either go for a 'body shot' which is a basic attack, or you can specialise your blow into one of the following.

Cripple (Melee/Ranged only). Normal accuracy, greatly reduced damage, however subsequent attacks get a bonus and the target's damage and speed are greatly reduced. Such an attack can only effect an enemy once and the penalties will scale depending on how much damage you do.

Discriminate (Ranged/Magic only). This allows you to pick a single target out from a group, your accuracy is lower but it has a great chance of catching the enemy off the back foot, especially if they fail a reaction/cohesion check.

Second Strike (Melee only) requires you to have passed a reaction check against an attacker in melee, if the check beats their cohesion roll then you get a free attack that has greater accuracy, slightly less damage and a chance to stun/surprise them.

Spike (Magic Only) allows you to boost the power of one spell to do greater damage (and in some cases increase accuracy), however your next spell will be weaker.

Overwhelm (Magic Only) allows you to increase the number of targets a single-target spell hits but decreases the damage of that spell.

Snipe (Range only) massive damage increase, massive accuracy decrease.

Final Blow (All) this attack is basically a one-hit wonder, if it works, the opponent will most likley be finished, however, the chances of it working, even if they've failed reaction, are small. This represents you going for an eye, throat or some other vunlerable part.
NOTE: This type of attack may not work against certain enemies, for instance, elementals are unlikley to be hurt by a ranged/melee Blow but are more likley to be hurt by a magical one. Whilst Vekth are unlikley to be hurt by ranged but melee is more likley to work...it's fairly obvious what types of creatures this will effect.

It was lucky that Lantaris dived into the group, and even luckier that any potential attacker was stalled by Takra's avalanche. The surprise assault scatters the Celians, one being tackled to the ground by Lantaris whilst the others, including the mage stagger back, the latter errecting a hasty shield around himself, keeping his feet and weathering the puntive spell thrown at him by Crystal.
"Oooh, a Green Circle Mage, I haven't killed one of you in a long time, perhaps I will get a commendation after all this."
Around him the surviving Celians stagger to their feet, recoiling as one is sent spining against a wall, a quarrel smashing through his chest cavity.
"Keep 'em reeling, I can't use any Jade in here...unless you all do want to be crushed by falling masonry." Rege' growls from the opening as he pulls back his crossbow's loading crank, his features grim.

"I see." Cassandra twirled a strand of hair thoughtfully around a beringed finger, her perfectly fromed mouth smiling. "I imagine all of those years of study must have yielded some great results, summoners are rare enough as it is, and mages who have bothered to read into their craft rarer still." The woman pauses as the innkeeper hurries over to your table, sweating slightly.
"Your, euh, the steeds you ordered are ready, Mydae. I should warn you though, the bandits on the road to Moonstair have become bolder, they even threatened a group of travelling priests once." Thassal is surprised that the man uses the elfin honourific for females when adressing his companion, then again, some cross-lingual infiltration is bound to occur on a continent as diverse as Sylvor.
"Oh," Cassandra frowns, folding her arms, "Which God?"
"Euh...S'hiras Ahran, Mydae." The Inkeeper's sweat begins to bead on his swarthy forhead. "As far as we know there were no survivors, although reports of Ghouls have grown amongst the outlying farms."
"Very well, we must leave at once, I doubt that they will be fools enough to attack us during the night, not with Ghouls out on the prowl."
"As you wish, Mydae." The Inkeeper bows, leading the two of you out and gesturing to two well-maintained horses standing impatiently in the street. With a second bow, the man leaves, closing the door to his establishment softly behind him.
"Alright Thassal, two questions." Cassandra turns to you, a hard note in her voice. "One, can you ride? And two, can you cast in the darkness?"
---------------------------------------------------------
Takley groans as he wakes, coughing at the smoke from the fire...which he was sure he had doused before he drifted off to sleep. Starting, he rolls out of his bedclothes, reaching for his short sword even as a plate is thrust out to him, the hand holding it an almost black brown.
"Good morning."
Looking up, Takley takes in a figure, well exceding six feet in height and clad in a greatcoat holding out his breakfast, a similar plate resting by the fire. The newcomer is clearly elfin in appearance, apart from his skin and white hair, as well as his single burning yellow eye, its twin covered by a band of dirty cloth.
"I suggest you eat this, last night must have been exhausting." The plate is laid on the grass as the stranger turns, looking up into the canopy. "I would strongly suggest that next time you take to the rooftops, if the Avengers catch you, it will be a quick, clean end, rather than what the things lurking in Moonstair's streets after dark will do to you."
---------------------------------------------------------
The first inkling Damir had that something was wrong, was with the first dream. As a rule, Eladrin slipped into a meditative trance instead of sleep, however, this time, it was almost as if a sonorous veil had been pulled roughly over his tired eyes, its inverse side a patina of hideous images.
Towns burnt, rivers burst their banks in bloody tides and children screamed as fire rained from the sky. Then, as the Eladrin knew it would, the Demon strode from the carnage, its massive frame blotting out all hope.
"...and when the night falls and all hope is lost, it falls to the meek to stand against the horrors of the dark." The lines from the Lay of Kein echoed through Damir's thoughts as he stared down at the bow in his hands, not his own, but a weapon crafted from, it seemed, light and gold, a symbol of hope.
"...for only the meek know of hope, for it is that which sustains them." Smiling, Damir pulled back the string of his bow, aimed up, and fired.

Blinking, the Eladrin opened his eyes, cursing at the sudden light, he felt...refreshed, after what must only have been two or less hours sleep, and yet. Blinking in shock he registered the bow from his dreams resting by his hearth with a single Rellanic rune scribed upon its grip.
"Hope."
Sudden energy filled the Eladrin's limbs, he would find the Pilgrim, come rain of blood or storm of fire, he would find him.

Like a shadow fleeing from a burst of light, Regarial staggers from the dusty crowd, nodding to Crystal before ushering her through the passage.
"Next time, and mark me, there will be a next time, don't wait for me to come out alive, if I do I will and if I don't then I most certainly won't." Rege' pauses as you catch sight of Takra and Lantaris, still runing from the source of the explosions. "Although I must say, I'm begining to like you Crystal, not many people I know could have pulled off a stunt like that in front of six kings."

Following your only route of escape you soon come to a chamber devoid of all ornament save a few sparsley matressed bunks. Fortunatley there only seems to be one way out of the room, making ambush unlikley, unfortunatley,
"What do you mean we're out of charges, surley we were supplied adequatley enough!" A man, clearly a mage, stands, glaring at his six fellows, all of whom are silent, staring past their commander to the doorway. "And don't think that those blank stares will get you out of this one, I'll whip some discipline into this squad if it's the last thing I-"
He turns, effecting a 'blank stare' before, sarcastically, one of the men behind him mutters.
"For Celia?"

"Very well." Ilourien turns to his compatriots. "I am satisfied."
"As am I." Horuk agrees, shrugging his massive shoulders, "Better to dine with Heretics than the faithful who twist scripture to their own ends."
"As do I." Bedrion announces.
"And I." Dragon states.
"And I." Says Kollun before the entire room turns to Skantea who glares back at them with a curt nod.
"It appears our last stand is neither heroic nor a last stand, I concur."

"Thank you gentlemen." You all turn in surprise at Al'Ral's voice, echoing now from around the chamber as the Free Agent slips, once again, into his shroud of invisibility. "Without your dissent my Charms would have yet to reactivate, making my presence here pointless and futile."

"I 'told' you to kill him," Chambers mutters from his chair, "One of the few things Verkoth and I agreed on."

"A mistake on your part, Master Chambers." Al'Ral chuckles as you hear a series of echoing footsetps from contradicting points in the room. "However, now I must take my leave, information is a commodity that depreciates quickly and I have a long road ahead."

"Show yourself, spectre!" Ilourien raises a hand, his lips already moving to chant a spell before, with a crash, each door flies open and the guards are bowled from their feet as seven Al'Ral's sprint past, a few of the weaker illusions failing as the King finishes his spell with a string of elvish curses.

"I feel now is the appropriate point to reiterate my concerns about your security measures." Skantea mutters to Dragon as the soldiers stagger to their feet, winded and dazed. In turn, the King wheels on his counterpart, sword half sliding from its scabbard before the room shakes and, much to Lantaris' surprise, he is hurled to the ground as Rege' takes out his feet before the wall he was leaning on caves inwards, sending a tremor running through the castle.

"Greenjade charges! An entire chain of them from the sounds of it." The Elf picks himself up, panic sharpening his features. "We have to get out of this wing now, unless you want the League Entire and Celians to go to war over our still-smkoing remains!"
Whilst your ally's knowledge of Greenjade explosives is impressive, his skills at speechcraft fall short as, at once, guard, king and mage rush for the exits, voices raised in panic.

With the destruction of the wall the door behind you is blocked and, with the room quickly becoming a quagmire of flailing bodies, only one route is available, the one to your left which, if your guesses are right, leads to an abandoned section of the castle, patrolled only sparsley and used to garisson levy troops in sieges, if Celian Assassins are based anywhere, there is the best bet...

"The point is, you sybillant wretch, that they outnumber us twenty to one." Gratter Skedge, the Guard Captain screamed as Kolussus regarded him with an unhuman gaze, the Yuan-Ti's eyes dull despite the glinting ice around him.
"Captain, I have stood these ramparts ever since the God Wars, when the Frost Giants came in hordes of thousands, there, with Zehir's Grace we prevailed, now, when they come in scores and without his guidance we will still prevail."
"They're after him, you know, they're after the pilgrim." Skedge's eyes betrayed his frantic fear, an emotion alien to the reptillian half of the garrison that manned the only pass out of the Hoarfrost Glacier.
"Then pray that your and his false gods give him the strength to prevail." Kolussus hissed back, turning to regard the oncoming horde, "And pray that you fall with the first wave."
The Yuan turns, striding down the frosted steps to the frozen earth of the courtyard, unslinging his greatbow.
"What do you mean fall?" Skedge stumbles down after him, hand flying to the hilt of his longsword.
"Suriving and Prevailing are not always the same thing, Captain, the wards we set yesterday will not shield this bastion from the Frost Giants' magic, merely render this point impassable until forces can be drawn up to combat the incursion."
"You mean we're-" Skedge stops as in the distance the mournful wail of a horn rings accross the mountains.
"May your false gods grant you peace, captain, and, as this is the last chance present for me to do this, may I also note that you are a craven of the lowliest degree whose highest aspiration is not fit for the divine to spit on." Kolussus strides past the man to the shivering Eladrin waiting by the gates.
"This is not your battle, Fey, you are the last soul who will use this pass, remember it for its sacrifice." A pause, a blue tongue lashes out to taste the air, then, "Our prophecy speaks of this moment, when our last great keep falls to the foes of Zehir. It also speaks that, once again, we will have to turn to the false gods for aid. I ask you this, for it is the last hope I can bear with me to my grave. Find the Pilgrim, a man, hooded and cloaked, who passed this way three days before you. He is headed to Moonstair, protect him, see that he reaches his destination, and, until the fortress falls, I strongly suggest you don't look back."

Five minutes later, the ringing crash of the fort's iron gates ringing in his ears, Damir finds himself on the road once again, but with the new, and annoying urge, to look back.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Now, that wasn't so smart, was it."
Takley freezes as the voice whispers softly above him, from the roof above the balcony of one of Moonstair's Eladrin mansions. The avengers couldn't see him, not if he kept clinging onto the inner curve of the wall, but to keep going up and reach the window would require him to enter their arc of divine sight.
"This is the territory of Sehannine, infidel, I suggest you hold your blade and your sword."
"A pity, I don't have a sword." There is a soft ruffle of cloth flapping in the wind before a female elf hurtles down the building's side, her face ruined from some kind of spell that was definetly fatal.
With a muted curse concerning the Avenger Academies, Takley looks around him for options, he needed to get to that balcony window, to find the only solid lead his coin had revealed concerning his family, however with the Avenger still on the roof he would have to find another way round or...the Drow grimaced as he judged the distance, jump the gap and catch hold of the railings.
----------------------------------------------------------
"So, what do you do for a living?" The comment echoed hollowly accross the crowded taproom as Cassandra flipped another grape through her perfectly shaped lips.
Accros the table from her, Thassal groaned inwardly. The woman had taken him from the tower (a plus) showing him the wonders of life beyond its whitewashed confines (a plus), however, her incessant questioning on subjects even his most advanced tomes of arcane lore did not cover were causing him immense emotional discomfort...although he had managed a full nine minutes conversation with her once, definetly breaking his previous record.
So, as the disfigured Half Elf considered his reply, his mind wandered accross what had transpired over the past week.
Cassandra, as the woman's name was, had led him from one city-state to another, crossing borders like a child played hopscotch along with her charge. Apparently they were headed somewhere, Moonstair if he recalled correctly, where he was to join her in some...venture? The whole scenario was confusing to the insularly-minded Thassal, however he had been informed that he would be payed, whatever that meant to a mage who could conjure otherwordly creatures to his beck and call with a flicker of will and was guarunteed life membership in, what had it been called? The Seeker's Legion, apparently an afluent consortium of artefact-hunters based in Sylvor's capital. Whatever the case, his future life was not his current problem, but rather, what the answer to his question was...

Damir is one for a good story, and so his history changes time after time. First his parents were killed by a Dragon and he was raised by a cave bear. Another is that when his parents were very anti-human and when he fell in love with one they exiled him. But in truth, he doesn't know what happened to his parents. His entire life he was raised by a kind old hermit that is until that hermit was killed by a orc when Damir was away. Distraught, Damir ran to the wilderness where he learned the ways of survival.

Backstory

Thassal was a loner by anyones account, he was always found in his laboratory in one of the uppermost rooms of Sylvours biggest tower. He found that books were often easier to get along with rather than people, his interaction with people was often ragged and uncomfortable, even going out to buy necessities like books, food, drink or vials for his potions, he found that as soon as he left the safety of his quarters his palms would sweat and his eyes were shifty. He was an archetypal worrier and not the kind that could kill people with ease, he would look around and often not venture out of the gatehouse of the tower if he saw but one person of which he thought he couldn't fully trust, he would retreat back to his apartment. Some weeks he would only have five meals, he had even resorted to catching rats and mice that crept out from their hiding places.

His figure was similar to his eating habits, non-existent. His skin was stretched across his skinny frame if he took his long white robe off you could see his ribs easily, he was a sunken man other young wizards like himself joked about his brittle bones and stick-like limbs. This was partly the reason for his social ineptness, he never had any friends, he once had a pet lamb but his family was poor and his dads heart was colder than ice, his father had killed the lamb in front of his eyes and had laughed when Thassals tears streamed down his face. Still to this day he wouldn't eat any meat if not for the memory of poor slanny. His father was a man of simple tastes, like most men of this world women, violence and killing, he was a Shepard by day but a killer if there was a war to be fought. He was good at it, there was no denying that, he never came back with wounds, only stories of how the gods favoured him for even if his side lost he would escape unscathed.

He was not a happy man though, as he had only produced one son who had killed the love of his life. Thassals mother had died during childbirth and his father had never forgiven him for that, he bullied him and seemed to get extreme pleasure at beating him both physically and emotionally. Thassal put this down to his fear of people especially males, although females could be much worse for he couldn't recall a time which he had had a conversation that lasted over one minute with a member of the opposite sex, he would blush if a women even so much as glanced at him.

It was time for a new beginning a new chapter of Thassals life he was fed up of knowing the same horrible people, the same dingy quarters that gave little light, he lived little better than a goblin being tortured by orcs in a cave. It was time to move on, meet new faces and even if he died at least it would be the end of his miserable life, he had studied the lore of magic now for 6 years and was a competent wizard he reckoned he could best almost anyone else who wasn't a master of magic in this godforsaken tower oh how he wished it could happen!

He began packing his meagre belongings into an old tarnished suitcase, he had little to his name even his extensive book collection wasn't his it belonged to the library of the mage tower. Suddenly there was a loud knock at his door, usually Thassal wouldn't answer as he was normally the bait of the latest practical joke, this was a new Thassal however. Thassal strode to the door his slight frame visibly shaking, his face slowly turning red, there were butterflies fluttering at the pit of his stomach, his long dark hair started to matt with sweat and his ugly features distorted into terror. Slowly he unlocked the numerous bolts attached to his door, turning the handle and fearing for the worst he creaked it open peering out with one eye, he saw something which made his instincts scream at him to slam the door shut and lock the bolts again.

It was a woman she was tall with long blonde hair stretching almost down to the small of her back, she wore long knee length boots and black trousers her torso was an explosion of colours though she wore a rainbow-like top and more jewellery than Thassal had seen in his life time, she was beautiful he thought to himself, “H-h-h-how c-can I h-help you, madam.” said Thassal before performing a curtly bow before her.

“I am looking for Thassal, Thassal Farthan. Is that you? Only I was told to look for a brave half-elf who was searching for an escape from the city and an adventure I surely have knocked on the wrong door?” Replied the beautiful woman.

But now, that time is gone and they live on the surface. No one knows for sure but one is curious, a young drow named Takley. He has searched the land for clues, for knowledge concerning the matter, always sticking to the shadows. Moreover something has caught his eye, well in the intelligence sense anyway. Now he seeks to find the Book, the Book which contains his families history and his race past, as well the reason why they came up. Some say its no gods to believe in, others well, don’t know. He searches on to no prevail, something else caught his mind, something that may lead to the discovery of what happened.

Okay, here's the Q&A Thread, on this you'll find the character sheets and quest prompts as well as your inventory and anything else you need.

If you have any problems with your characters just let me know. Some of the Traits might need some explaining...
Basically as this isn't entierly rules based you don't get concrete bonuses from things, just indicators that you're good at them, I'll apply the necessary buffs whenever you attempt an action related to one of your trained skills/traits and give you bonuses in combat for various types of attacks, ect.

May I be the first to second that, a very happy birthday to you (I've even given up my void-feeding habits for the occasion).

Not to pressure you, Takley, but I'm still waiting on the backstory...
Sorry to have to ask but I need it fairly quickly.

"Nevertheless I would still hear those same words from the lips of a Senan. If we are to give into suspicion I will forster my fair share of doubts." Ilourien replies, eyeing you impassivley. "Continue, Elmheart."

"I wasn't aware you schooled your mages in advanced tactics, Skantea." Kollun's jovial comment seems to send a wash of calm through the unnervingly tense room as the young king smiles, spreading his hands. "What Journeymage Hardwood says is true, we cannot fight both the League Entire and Celian Empire, even if the League does betray us it shall not do so whilst its holdings are threatened by Celia. This way, if we do fight both foes it shall be on our own terms, giving us the best chance we could possibly have."

"Agreed." Growls Dragon, nodding a begrudging affirmative. "Although I would question one of the points the Mage raised. Why would the Celian Empire not seek to treat with us? They have made truces with provinces before, much like what the League Entire is attempting now. Surley they would have recieved word of these Sevaraii from their sleeper agents, and surley they would have dispatched their own spies and sabetouers to offer us a similar deal."

"Yet they haven't." Skantea's first words to you are hollow, like a voice crying from an old, empty well. "What does that tell us about the Celian stance towards these proceedings? That they are content to sit by as their greatest foe secures and alliance that could curtail all of their activities around the Inner Seas for decades? No, the Celian Empire will not risk an alliance between the League Entire and Coast, yet it is unlikley to offer us any better deal, leaving us with..."

"...a plot to assassinate the Kings of Coast." Bedrion finishes, swallowing hard. "Master Chambers...you said that there was a splinter faction of Sevaraii amidst your forces, one seeking to sabotage your plans. Can you be certain they are all, euh, disposed of?"

"Probably not." Chambers steeples his fingers, looking down at his boots. "However I can be sure of several things, cheif amongst them that the Celian Empire will have dispatched numerous 'spies and sabetouers' to ensure we do not reach an agreement."

"In which case us coming to this...agreement should be done in the greatest possible haste. Horuk growls, turning to a guard, "Bring ink, parchment and a quill-" He stops at a raised hand from Ilourien, the elf's usually impassive features now a frown.

"Hold, I wish to be certain that the Sevaraii speaks the truth. Mage Elmheart, can you verify what your companion has stated?"

Right, got all the sheets, if it's not too much to ask I'd like a backstory from TsAsh and Takley's revised backstory (sorry if I've recieved these and not noticed, I'm completley out of it at the moment). Otherwise we're set to begin.
